That's a nice memory to cherish always. Salute!
Steely Dan is your favorite band’s favorite band.
Snarky Puppy, for example.....
Very well put.
I've loved them for 50 yrs.
@@olivergoodwin9821 they opened for them when I saw them in May!👍
@@teresataylor4671 god - me too! 1972! Unbelievable they've nearly been a part of my whole life!
Nothing like seeing this band live. Was lucky enough to see this same lineup in auburn Washington . Amazing.
So many iconic Jazz themes riffed in their opening. The sound is indeed brilliant! Archive these, folks; we may never hear a popular band like this ever.
Steely Dan, one of the greatest bands in 20th & 21st century.
Inaccurate There the greatest band in any century
steely dan is the greatest of the best
Greatest band of all time
Who sets the criteria for "greatest?" All I know is, this album is the one I want on the desert island with me.
And the 22nd Century also for that matter.
Thank God EVERY DAY for Steely Dan. RIP Mr. Becker

There is not a better band than Steely Dan . Not ever .
you are correct sir!!!!!
Never been to a concert, live in South Africa. Bought their music, still have some on vinyl. Hope to travel to US for a concert before shuffling off this mortal coil.

Steely Dan and the many hand selected/picked uber magnificent musicians who've performed, recorded with them are simply an unprecedented & genial musical phenomenon & talent extraordinaire! Music, Records & Songs that has never before, nor will ever be heard or witnessed again!
Their rich music for over 4 decades has truly been one of the primary, hallmark blessings in my life and countless others!
Thank You Donald & Walter!

Grew up in Chicago, been listening to the Dan since 73, saw this album in SF about 10 years ago

Playing live is always a sort of compromise to the original recording especially if the perfection in recording is almost reached by their composers....... On stage there is also improvisation and more.
Class act. For me nobody can top them. And Larry Carlton, that's the WOW factor,
AND adds that special authenticity to the concert
We flew in from Columbus, Ohio for this once in a lifetime event. Surreal. Timeless. One for the ages.
One of THE best bands ever with Mr 335, one of the finest guitarists. Got to love it? Music for faded hipsters of which I am unashamedly one!!

I was there that night! One of the best concert experiences of my life! Me and my friends still talk about that night on a regular basis. I not only got to see one of my top 3 bands, I saw what may be my most favorite Steely Dan (hard to qualify LOL) albums played live. I got to see the magic of Larry Carlton firsthand live. The guitar work on Royal Scam is indelibly stamped in my head. An unexpected surprise was discovering first hand what a hell of a great drummer Keith Carlock is! I can honestly say a drummer had never captured my attention at a concert like he did that night. Instantly became a huge fan. John Harrington showed he was more than able to step in and play all the licks we're so familiar with, plus some exquisite new ones. The lead guitar chores are in great hands with him. I've always loved Walter Becker's (R.I.P.) playing style, and he didn't disappoint. I wished he would've stepped out more. Donald Fagen's voice was in fine shape and the whole evening went way too fast. I've seen the Dan live many times, but this one was extra special. Thanks so much for posting this and allowing me to relive a great memory!!!
Jon Herington - He didn't "step in" out of the blue. He had been playing on Steely Dan albums, as well as each of their solo projects, and touring with them for almost ten years.
Saw this show. My favorite Steely Dan concert ever!!

walter & donald created some hi quality music,,, RIP walter.. & thanks.
A part of the beauty of SD music is the introduction to the who's who of the session scene back in the day. The players were & in most cases still are, current, working musicians with incredible chops.
Larry Carlton's like " hold my beer, I got this!
yeah he's great but honestly that didnt even compare to the original solo by Elliot Randall which is out of this world
@@timcardona9962 Just your opinion which your entitled to, but when I google you, I don't see well known respected player come up

Keith Carlock Is Absolutely The Truth Here There & Everywhere!! Love This Guy!!!👍🏽
“Ever” is a very long time and with a very long line....!! lol but he’s most definitely Top Top Notch!!! Thanks for the kind reply ✌🏽👍🏽
As a drummer, I’m so glad that Keith maintained the integrity of the songs. Of course he has the latitude to interpret the songs as he sees fit, but he held onto all the breaks and the little drumming nuances that I have grown so accustomed to hearing and looking forward to with all Steely Dan songs.
So true...
I dig when he counts the band in.
Can’t get enough songs in a concert. Shame. Their whole catalogue is brilliant
Absolutely magical! Thanks for sharing this monumental evening with all of us! We saw Larry with the boys and girls at the Beacon that year in August, several nights in a row. Unbelievable!

Walters gone but never forgotten, I have one of his old Top Hat speaker cabs, I hope someday a kid that loves the Dan gets it.
Really? How do you know it's his?
Excellent, of course. l wish l knew who else was performing besides Fagan, Becker and Carlton.
Yes, there's gas in the car. Hahaha!!! Being born a musician, I always appreciate quality musicianship, and have always been drawn to groups that bend genres and combine different genres to form something new. Here's a plug for a Symphonic Metal Band from Finland called Nightwish, with the greatest singer in the world, the incomparable Floor Jansen. Sorry can't help myself. Anyway, this band is indeed the band that other bands have always listened to, because EVERYTHING is as great as it can possibly be, including the actual sound itself. Proof? When I went shopping for new speakers in the 1980's Aja was being played in every stereo store I went to, because it sounded great on every speaker, because it was so beautifully recorded. Thank you Donald for being such a perfectionist. It is greatly appreciated!!
real glad this is back on youtube. was a painful few months when the last one went down. thanks.

If you want to drum with the big boys, you gotta do the final drum solo from "Aja" (1:22:50).

The band introduction vamp is not called Live Wire, it’s a cover of The Supreme’s “Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart”
That was a mighty fine rendition of “Dirty Work” with female vocals; did I miss hearing their names before Donald said ‘thanks girls’ and then named the trombone player on the song. If you read this Donald, you might try in future to remember the singers names. Thanks to the late Walter for introducing them later on. Otherwise a very fine show.
I've seen SD atleast five times, and Donald has never failed to introduce everyone. I would give him the benefit of the doubt on this.

LC drilled it so good!
Always a Dan fan and have been to / listened to many of their concerts. To me, throughout the Royal Scam set, the band sounded they'd all taken some Valium before the concert; just my opinion. They picked it up during the Greatest Hits set, and I did like the jazz/swing twist they put on Black Friday...great stuff.
It's funny you say that as I read that Donald Fagen actually does like to take a valium with a little brandy before playing live to ease his nerves

Fantastic recording. Is this available anywhere on CD or download?
They got this one ... just right
So much to like. Thanks a million for this. And yet I seek to extract from this fine work Black Friday with LC in fine form to put together a nice little focused compilation of his best work. Any ideas?
The middle solo is by John Harrington, and it’s the best playing on the whole show imo. Larry is the over-reverbed tone at the outro.
Carlton has a sweet tone doesn't he!
are there any live performances where SD includes tracks from their ''everything must go'' release?
Yes. Go search Toronto 2011 Massey hall ... Godwhacker is outrageous. Actually the energy of that show was great ... Your Gold Teeth on there also .
thanks for the feedback. I look forward to that.
@@scottsil1060 I just listened to the Godwhacker live track. sounds indeed great live. (starts at 1.20.30) . thanks for the tip
That's better than Gadds fills!!! I said it!!! Keith is amazing!!
Fair comment. Though Gadd did his track in two takes - no rehearsal, just, I believe, using a horn chart for reference. Mr. Carlock has had 30 years of hearing the record, using it for reference, likely performing it in cover bands, and at this point some years playing it with Steely Dan. I love Carlock's playing (I'm a drummer) and he is great throughout this, though Gadd has such an iconic sound, style and feel that it shouldn't be said on is 'better'. Different, preferable...okay. But better? Carlock would like be the first to disagree. But as I noted up front, fair comment. We all have our preferences.
