2013 sees the highly-anticipated release of the Casio G-Shock Rangeman model GW9400 (GW9400-1A) that is a thematic follow-up to the Riseman. It has triple sensor technology and a long list of features. Retail price is $300.
Hi. I'm 9 years late to this video, but I just bought a Rangeman and I too was curious about the cat logo so I asked Casio America. Here is their answer:
Thank you for contacting Casio America. Wildcat characters are placed on many of the back covers of the standard model of the GW-9400. RANGE means "wandering" and "searching for ...". As the name suggests, RANGEMAN is named with the concept of RANGER, which wanders in the woods. In the same way, we have adopted a wildcat as a character that moves around the forest freely.
By the way, this model is a G-SHOCK equipped with a triple sensor, so wildcat has three claws and whiskers.
On the arm, the compass that is most used when wandering in the forest
Since it is a radio-controlled watch, it is designed to show the characteristics of RANGEMAN everywhere, such as the tail that resembles a radio-controlled antenna.

As a photographer, the sunrise/sunset feature is pretty cool. A lot of times, the setting or rising sun can produce light that's dramatic for subjects. So having that is a handy feature.

A person who has emense knowledge about watches and simultaneously is a quote : "life long fan of G - shock watches", that says a lot
good review, but:
1) the cat engraved on the back plate is wearing a compass, not a watch
2) all g-shocks that belong to the "master of g" line have a figure engraved on the backplate
I absolutely love this watch. I bought it recently from a store after I got a discount on it. I originally wanted the green one but this one is attractive too. I wear it on the inside of my wrist and on my forearm. I use the timer for cooking and the stopwatch to time my runs. I once got a bunch of dough stuck inside it while making Parathas and blasted it with water till it stopped smelling like yeast, and it looked brand new, no water got in despite the pressure. I have accidentally smashed it against a lot of hard surfaces and brick walls and its spotless as ever. A beautiful watch. I'd like to get the rangeman too some day.
Sun up and down function was one of the main reasons i boight this one for :D

Amazing watch guys, it really is. I've had this watch for around a month now and I love it.
Huge disappointment about Timer mode (countdown), which is very important for me. Not possible to adjust seconds in Timer mode, no Auto Repeat. Many times on my DW-6800 I set seconds and used auto repeat. Especially when doing sport. I don't know who that idiot, which decided to make this really dumb limitation in such a serious watch.
the engraving on the backside of the watch is unique to the "master of g" watches (i.e rangeman,mudman,frogman,etc.) each master of g model has a different unique symbol (frogman is a frog,rangeman is a cat,etc.) hope that explains the engraving!

Mandy, I love your aesthetic description (belongs in a happy meal)! It's kinda true. There are hundreds of G Shock models, many for little kids so it's hard t take them seriously as "watch makers". However, I own Breitling and other sophisticated & beautiful chronograph watches that I wouldn't dare take backpacking, fishing, bike riding, snorkeling, skiing, baseball playing, rock scrambling... you get the point. That's why I need G Shock. Yes, I wish they were better looking, and I hate the fact that you can't change that awful plastic band, but these watches do everything you can think of and do it well, so I need one.
I have this watch in the full blackout and negative display. When I got it, it was basically for a fun look to add to my watch collection. Soon I realized how accurate the ABC sensors are and it is pretty amazing once you learn how to use it for your particular lifestyle. I have found that the compass and barometer are very useful. The history graph function of the barometer and trend of pressure will show you when risks of storms is present using very basic meteorology concepts. The compass is dead on accurate and can be easily dual calibrated for local accuracy. I do not use the altimeter much but it is also very accurate once you know how to use it in conjunction with the barometer. As for the atomic sync, it works great. I am 600+ miles from the tower and it syncs several times a week with the auto function.
One quick note: These can be a bit power hungry depending on your use so keeping it under some natural sunlight is crucial. I make sure mine gets daily sun to keep the battery full.

you can calibrate the thermometer so you don't need to take it off to check the temperature.

+JoeyTheBrave Go into Thermometer mode and hold the top left button. Make sure you have another thermometer of some sort to compare the exact temperature. Let the watch sit without touching it for about 15-20 minutes. Put it on your wrist and the temperature will go up and wait until you see it stop. Once it stops compare it to another thermometer for exact reading or you can just subtract the room temperature from where it was sitting. Voila.
With clocks that have thermometer functionality I do not use rubber band, but nylon strap with adapters, so the metal back doesn't touch my wrist and alter the sensor
I have this watch. It is terrific! Works well and it is surprisingly accurate in all respects. Time keeping is better than +6 seconds per month.
I also have a similar G-Shock using a compass bezel and also a full face compass. It is very much the same for the functions.
I tried other competitor watches. The Casio is better than the ones I tried.

I own the GW - 9400-3CR in the green. This one is a limited edition. I plan on getting the GW-9400-1A in my collection as well. The best G-Shock ever!!!!
Don't mind the dimwitsMandy Liontits down there. Ignorant as a fish in an aquarium. G-Shocks are purposefully built, if it doesn't serve yours, don't get it. Simple as that. Bought myself one for New Year's, couldn't be happier :)

It looks quite good on your wrist. What size is your wrist?
Looking nice. Especially the green version. I still find the overall looks haven't changed enough over the last 25 years. I wonder why they don't display little color LED's for different functions, higher resolution dial, things like that.
I put mine on an original resin bracelet like the GW-A1100FC-1A has, I was lucky enough to grab the last one available, haven't seen any 'official' ones after that.

Just got the same watch and I prefer it over my Casio Pro Trek PRW-300001ACR (Negative Display). In addition to the short cut to the stop watch, I wish the top right button was a shortcut to the timer. Wish the alarm and timer sounds were a little louder.

i have this watch before recently..like a week ago the rangeman G-Shock, i love G-SHOCKS, fan, but when i got this watch, comparing to the GBD-H1000 well, the bezel is small so i decided to return it which i got it from Amazon, instead i got the GBD-H1000 which has most of the features and has 5 sensors and easy control and smart link thru bluetooth...but rangeman is nice and most of all its G-SHOCK...but if only it has a bigger bezel..like the Mudmaster...or the GSD-200 then ill keep it...hahaha thanks for the review then.

Hi, i've read that the four screws in the face are purely decorative and that, In the end can be a way for dust and rust to affect the watch.

can you predict the weather using the barometer while you are going from one place to another like when you are going for some errands outside or it should be stationary in one place.
Hi..I have the Rangeman 9400-1 purchase 4 days ago. I just noticed that there is a small gap between the plastic bezel and glass at the lower part of the face. I can push it back but if flexes back. the gap is about the size of a paper. Please let me know if this is normal..I'm planning to return it back for replacement. TIA.
I returned my rangeman because the sensors just weren't really accurate. It's great it has these sensors, but what good are they when they aren't 100% accurate? I returned it and got a basic 2310 model. Same basic features with solar, 5 alarms, etc, just no sensors or sunrise/sunset. Less than half the price too

My current gshock just died and I am trying to decide upon 4 watches. Either the protrek prw-3000, prw-2500, gshock aviation series watch, or a master of g. Which do reccomend? Which do you like best?
Easy choice, the G-Shock Rangeman GW9400 of course! PRW3000 is rather tiny in my opinion, questionable durability but version 3 sensors, prw2500 a relic due to version 2 sensors, soon to be outdated, Aviation series I wouldn't prefer since it lacks ABC-functionality and I despise analogue watches, so there you have it

I can assure you it's not sapphire crystal otherwise it would be a tad more expensive

but don't worry the bezel of the watch sticks out a lot and trust me( I have g shock) you won't get scraches

I realize you posted this a while ago, but if you're still interested I'm pretty sure the ER stands for European Release. I guess that means it's sold in Europe.

i saw price and wondering how you messed up. You have version 1 with cheap led screen. version 3 is over 400 hundred dollars and has inorganic LED reversed. or OLED maybe....much nicer

They should put the moon phase in where the compass shows so you can see the moon phase on the home screen with the barometer and moon age instead of date. All the while keeping the compass in the mode options.That would be perfect for this model. Dam nice watch BTW, but I think I'll have to wait for a bit and see if they put a moon phase on there. PS: No mention of barometric tendency alarm.

Depends on what do you need it for, if classy design (appearance wise) go for the gst, mtg or mrg but if you prefer function go with the master of g series
love the rangman series...none of the reviews I have seen show that this series has a backlight. does this series have any type of light source?

is this better than suunto?
It is as accurate as a Suunto, but it lacks the pressure lock (mean sea level pressure) which enables you to conduct weather forecast despite changing altitude, and also lacks a depth gauge.
However I'd prefer this instead of a Suunto Core since it's solar/atomic and durable as hell, + same measurement sensitivity.

Abdallah Kazim Put it under direct sunlight. If u use lamp it is going to take like more than 10 times longer compared to direct sunlight.

Hideous. cheap, mass produced and lifeless piece of plastic. I would not be caught dead with something that looks like it came with a happy meal. I know, I know, I know... It is "accurate" and has a million features more than a fine AP, VC, or PP but you know what...? I don't need a watch to know the time or any of the features this thing has because my smartphone has all of those in better versions and more. What my smartphone doesn't have is beauty, magic, hand crafted art and prestige... To each their own... McDonalds is the best burger for someone I am sure but there is a reason why a good meal can cost a 1,000 bucks or more. Same with watches... There is a reason why some fine watches cost 7 figures and worn by the elite while this can be found on the wrist of an average school kid. Just my 2 cents.
G-Shocks have a purpose. They're nice, inexpensive watches that can take a beating and you won't cry if you break or lose it. When I'm at the range for live fire, I'm wearing a G-Shock. I have no qualms about moving around barriers and hitting my watch, no worries about going urban prone in the dirt and slamming the watch against rocks and gravel and brass, or worrying about brass from other shooters hitting my watch.

I your case that makes total sense actually. But let's be honest. .. 99 percent of the people wearing these watches wear them for the same reason the rich wear expensive pieces. .. For looks. It's a tool watch as you rightfully explained.
G-Shocks have a history, a pedigree and more engineering in them than 80% of watches today that are basically bought ETA/Miyota/Seiko movements cased in Asia with a make believe history with my favorite being the Mil spec SPEC OPS NAVY SEALS ARMY TACTICAL watches that are marketed like tools for professionals, WHO ACTUALLY USE G-SHOCKS in real life!!

The problem of why certain people are wearing them is another thing, and i have to admit it is making Casio think more about the looks than engineering, but this model is making them turn on the right path again!!
It is like saying only divers are supposed to wear dive watches and only scientists the Milgauss, and only Blind people minute repeaters (might have gone a bit to far there :))
those quarts g-shock has respect more than patek philippe quartz they made and do you know what i know the feeling to have an really cool mechanical watch or automatic actually i have many things but you don't have a good eye to see g shock world at least not like me and many other at watchuseek we are able to see both world's
