    If I had to cobble together a theory on the various different back stories for the Hobgoblins, it would be that they indeed had been mercenaries in the West, and had fought alongside the Orks in their war against the Chaos Dwarves. However as much of their race was enslaved, some escaped to the Far East where they formed the Khanate. Whereas those in the West would go on to become slaves, then side with the Chaos Dwarves, and finally reach their position of prominence as favored servants. This would allow both distinct Hobgoblin societies to exist in universe.

    I think the way that the Orks & Goblins have maintained their grudge against the hobgoblins despite having no history is the genetic knowledge that Orks & Goblins carry. The Hobgoblins pissed off the Orks so much that they wrote anger into their very genes!
    This is more explored in 40K but if Orks & Goblins in fantasy also have genetic memory then it makes sense.

    As far as the wolf horse archer question: I imagine it's a trade-off:
    -less carrying capacity (and thus ammo and armor)
    -higher training requirement due to less steady gait
    +a smaller, more agile target that can dodge enemy fire better
    +better intimidation and ability to defend you if/when the enemy gets too close

    • @desperado3236
      @desperado3236 3 года назад

      Is it a more steady gait though? Its hard to say but yeh your spot on. I imagine a wolf mount wouldnt make you a better archer but it would increase your toughness overall and utility. Youd be able to switch to melee shock cav to horse archer easily.
      I have to say though, fighting on a wolf would be weird. The wolf woud only be able to bite and wouldnt be able to pounce around without the hob falling off. Teaching a predator like a wolf to mostly sit still would be pretty hard.

    • @evilroberto4024
      @evilroberto4024 3 года назад

      I remember seeing something that explaied the difference between how horses and dogs run.
      Horses tend to keep their back flat and running more with their legs where's dogs will bend forward arching their back.
      Meaning if you stan on your stirrups to stady yourself you'll bounce less on a horse than on a dog. So honestly it would be a lot harder to shoot on wolfback than horseback

    There's plenty of 3D printing files for chaos dwarfs around, Oldhammer is fairly popular to print. So if you want an army, they're even cheaper than buying a new army for a still existing faction from GW.

    Wolves are endurance hunters, they can absolutley keep running for a long time without getting tired, that is pretty much how they chase down elk for example. Keep chasing and nipping at the hind legs/rear it until it collapses from exhaustion and blood loss. As for the weight they can bear, if hobgoblins are somewhere between a human and a goblin in size, then regular wolves would perhaps struggle to carry them, but if they have been breeding these wolves for a long time, they might have been selecting for larger sizes, even more endurance, obidence etc.

    • @TheLastSterling1304
      @TheLastSterling1304 3 года назад +7

      Humans were kinda like that too. Thanks to being one of the few animals that can sweat, we cool ourselves as we move. Infact we can simply chase an animal at jogging pace which by then becomes paralyzed through heat exhaustion.

      I think Wolves/dogs can definately be used as mounts in theory, but they would have to be insanely larger than real-life wolves. Remember that the smallest riding horses/ponies we use for children weigh a minimum of 400pounds or 180kg. For a grown man you would need a much much larger horse. Hobgoblins seem to be around the same size as a human or perhaps slightly less, so you would need a wolf/dog breed that is at least 800pounds, preferably larger if you want good performance and add arms and armour into the picture. But hey, Warhammer is a fantasy world so I dont doubt that there could be breeds of wolves or dogs that are incredibly large. :)

    I imagine when Warhammer 3 gets its inevitable Chaos Dwarf race pack, the Goblin Khan could fill a lord slot. In terms of aesthetic, I'd hope for a mixture of oldschool chaos dwarf/hobgoblins touched up with some grit and grimdark, but maintaining the Babylonian/Mongolian themes respectively.

      @@ravanpee1325 I'm thinking a 'subfaction'. i.e. Chaos Dwarfs get hobgoblins within their roster. The Khan gets buffs for hobgoblins and major upkeep on dwarf units. Alternatively, the Khan could have a Skarsnik situation where he cannot recruit chaos dwarf units unless he captures their cities. In this sense, it would be in the Khan's interest to 'enslave' the chaos dwarfs, making them recruitable if he succeeds.
      Ultimately, he's a fluffy character, but I don't think he would warrant a full DLC by himself, and I wouldn't want him to just be an AI either. If Chaos Dwarf race pack gets 4 LL slots, the Khan could totally fit in one of them.

    Based on what we know about them, I think the Hobgoblins, like the Black Orks, were created artificially by the Chaos Dwarves. As for why they did this, I don't think they were trying to create better workers. I think the Chaos Dwarves were conducting the magical equivalent of a super soldier program to enhance their own troops and used the Greenskins as guinea pigs. The Gnoblars may have also been created by the Chaos Dwarves to either gift or sell to the Ogres, their only real allies in the world, seeing as they are essentially goblins, barring their slight physical differences, that seem biologically programmed to serve Ogres instead of Orks.

      Which is the part of lore that I don't like. I would have preferred to see Chaos Dwarfs going Automa/Robot units to bolster their numbers. Imagine having models of four legged robots possessed by a minor chaos demon that spits fire....

    I like the theory of the Hobgoblins secretly being corrupted by chaos. Arch has mentioned chaos green skins in 40K, said greenskins are rare due to the fact that, in 40K at least, Orcs can sense that something is "wrong" with them (perhaps because of how chaos affects the WAAAAGH field or something) and so are either killed or escape on a Freebooter ship. Perhaps this might explain as to why the other greenskins still hate the Hobgoblins, as I find it unlikely that they keep records of the hobgoblin's betrayal considering how Orcs and Goblins usually are. So rather than it being that the Orcs and Goblins remember the betrayal, it's instead that they just know something is "wrong" with that Hobgoblins and hate them instinctually. Doesn’t help that it likely also means that the Hobgoblins have abandoned Gork and Mork. This corruption may also be why they so readily allied with the Chaos Dwarfs, as aside from all the benefits, the both worshiped chaos in some form of another and so get along like a house on fire. That's my theory anyways.

    In the novels (Old World as aos is non-cannon to me) Wild Kingdoms: A Hobgoblin warboss...maybe it was a regular goblin, while not dying of old age was old and decrepit and could no longer lead raids as he was towed on a cart or some such. The location was in the dark lands so its possible it was a hobgoblin.

    @Arch, as a fellow Dawi Zharr fanatic, I really appreciate the videos you put out dealing with them, Hobgoblins included, its as I always say, no TableTop Chaos Dwarf fan would ever hate the Hobgoblins, they are damn near as important to the Chaos Dwarf faction as the Chaos Dwarfs themselves are/were. With that being said, yes there is surprisingly a mention of a Greenskin, and a Hobgoblin at that, dying of old age. I very recently did a post on Hobgoblins on the Total War Forums, so I actually can give you the mention as its fresh in my head.

    snip.... Scarred old mate of mine named Shoresh, least whys as close to a friend as I’ve ever had among them, seeing as he didn’t stick me when he had the chance, told me there have been many Hobgobla Khans over time. Most fall in battle or are sorted out by assassination with great regularity. Only the infamous Morcar Kahn the Cunning managed to die of old age. I reckon it was the truth ‘cause Shoresh was drunk when he told me, but you can never tell with a Hob. Sneaky bastards the lot of ‘em. Why they fit in so well with us mercenaries, eh?

And I think they’re trying to get away from some of the goofiness to be fair I think they could go with more clothing on the bull Centaurs And secondarily their skin is supposed to be made of metal so the paint job should show that instead of making them look like normal flesh and they should have giant beards

  • @KingQwertzlbrmpf
    @KingQwertzlbrmpf 3 года назад +1

    Wolves are actually an inferior mount for mounted archers compared to horses. They are slower than horses, much less endurant and can carry only much lighter loads. They do have some advantages over horse mounted archers though. They have a superior sense of smell and as such can help in tracking down enemies, they are naturally stealthy, they are much more agile in close quarters (which can occasionally make them harder to ride) and they can assist their rider in combat much better than a horse. Now, the disadvantages could, at least to a degree be migitated via selective breeding, but what gives the idea the death blow is not those disadvantages. What gives the idea the deathblow is a matter of upkeep. Wolves neccesarily need meat for their food. And with especially large and powerful woves a massive amount of that. With horse archers they only need to carry food for the rider and the horse can just graze on the endless meadows they are riding through. With wolves you need to additionally carry the meat for the wolve. And no matter how you square it, this limits the range of movement for the wolve riders dramatically. And a large range of movement is püretty much essential to any light and especially skirmish cavalry.

    If you place any stock in Mathias Eliasson's Warhammer 9th Edition and Armies Project, he basically splits the difference. The squatter, pot-bellied hobgoblins are a specific breed that evolved under the Chaos Dwarfs, while the taller, more Tolkien-esq form are from the Khanate. All are treacherous and have that lovely little lump of bone in their backs.

    I alway liked the idea of wolf cavalry. Wolves run quieter than horses and are at home in the woods. So you get a more covert cavalry weaving through the trees to strike and fade back into the forest. This at the trade off of some speed.

    It's interesting to compare Warhammer hobgoblins to their far-flung D&D roots, Warhammer Fantasy literally having evolved out of Games Workshop d eciding to go independent and cobble together a world from the mixture of historical wargaming, D&D and Runequest models they used to produce. In the olden days, D&D hobgobbos were Lawful Evil because they were a highly organized and militaristic society with dreams of conquest (and also a very distinctive Chinese/Japanese/Mongolian aesthetic), to the point their greatest flaw was their inability to unite - two tribes couldn't meet without fighting for dominance. In contrast, orcs were Lawful Evil because they were a natural race of thugs and underlings, kowtowing to any sufficiently ferocious and intimidating dark overlord figure - they even had the same afterlife, Acheron, which they fought over bitterly. In 3rd edition, they finally diverged; hobgoblins retained their old Lawful Evil nature, whilst orcs became Chaotic Evil barbarians, marauders and raiders - very much in line with Warhammer's orcs, in fact.
