currently rebuilding the engine on my b7 rs4 due to the previous owner spinning a rod bearing. not a common failure, but definitely an expensive one. I will upload the repair to my channel once it's finished.
Emotional connection is hard to explain. The V8 is magical in that regard. It sounds awesome. The gear shifts are as perfect as you ever got from a manual. Handling is really predictable and with a sensible brake upgrade, it really is pretty good even today. The shocks are a letdown, but aftermarket KW shocks are a great alternative. I find it hard to beat for a daily sportscar even today.
Do the carbon clean! I just did it, worked wonders, the car pulls much harder especially in the higher rev range, mine just clocked 200 thousand km...running very strong, love it to bits!
Good, but not awesome IMO. I have a 2019 S3 Sportback Black Edition with the Supersports seats as fitted in the RS3. They are severely lacking in lateral support compared to my Porsche sports seats. Really needs Recaro CS seats at about 3K and mine may well get them.
@@New777Wine I was comparing the RS3 seats which are the same as in my S3. Agreed the RS4 wingbacks might be better, though they don't seem to have any more lateral support, hence why I'm considering Recaro CS seats. I'm late to the party because I only bought my 2019 S3 last October 😀 and was just wondering if the RS4 was significantly better. It is, but not for the cost of trading up to a new one, plus the S3/RS3 is a perfect size for my use. I believe Audi supply the Recaro CS in the black with red stitching, but at something like £500 each as opposed to 300-350. They WOULD give the true bucket seat support that I'm used to with my Porsche sports seats!
The B7 is definitely one of the best saloons to ever exist, the solid feel, build quality & engine noise is almost second to none. I feel as though the RS3 is boring compared to how engaging the RS4 is to drive. Not bashing the RS3 as it's a fantastic car, the 5 cylinder is intoxicatingly fun to drive, especially in the new TTRS, which I had too much illegal fun in, but the mechanical whine and the burbling of the V8 and the 8k redline while bombing it past everyone is too satisfying.
I have a 2019 RS3. It is by far the best car I have ever owned and I have a 2020 718 Spyder. Too bad we won't be receiving the 2022 RS3 here in Canada. You can't have everything in life.
The timing chain issue is only a problem in the B6/B7 S4. The RS4 has aluminum chain guides where as the S4 has plastic. I agree that turbo chargers help with the torque values. The only reason the RS4 has such low values is because it has a flat plane crank. It allows the engine to rev very high, but the torque output is usually low without boost. Add a supercharger and you can dip into the 700hp range out of the RS4. The RS5 has the same V8 motor, but with a different tune. Upgrade to the RS5 tune and you now have 450hp and 340 lb-ft.
Great timing of this video... it dropped just as I was looking at RS4 Avants on auto trader! Im really tempted, I just wish I could tow my motocross bike with it and then I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
I own a B6 S4, this makes me biased for the platform coupe of the S4 upgraded to the RS4. The RS3 for me would not appeal, however the TTRS would. Similar motor but for me the esthetics of the TTRS win over the RS3. Then the ultimate would be the B7 RS4 in avant form which when remembering the RS2, the avant grocery getter is the only one. Thanks for the review, nice job. But of course us yanks never could get the B7 RS4 in avant form. The closest I've gotten ws my friend Dan Gray's complete RS4 conversion from a B7 S4 avant.
So agree about steering wheels and seats. Fav was Alfa 156 Ti. Why do all modern ‘sports’ cars have such thick rims and over high bolsters!? Yet no shoulder support.... love the RS4!
You know what it's like - flying economy while being stuck next to a couple of chatty strangers prattling on for half an hour in crushingly boring conversation? You pray for the return of mid-flight monotony or some turbulence - perhaps a few flames from the port engine...
Thoughts on the rs4s value in 5/10 years time?. Right now they seem pretty cheap £10k for “not the best” example and £15k ish for a decent one. Drove one today and realise how much I love that older car feel. Manual box and heavy none electronic steering... yes plz. But need to justify this purchase to the wife haha
Love the RS4 it's the best and I should know I've had one now for 4 year's its a option black unrestricted 175 mph flying machine wouldn't swap it for anything just love her
Awww yes, a little bit incredibly sad, isn't it? Not being judgemental but I feel like the legendary Quattro system is like less fierce in modern Audi's. Don't know if it's because there are more electric components.
I've currently got a remapped 2010 A4 estate 2.0 TDI S-Line Black Edition which I love, but I want to move up to something a little more powerful but still maintaining the practicality of the estate. Any suggestions for what I should go for. I have a £15k budget.
Rs3 is nice but in my opinion the best hot hatch that money can buy is the mk2 focus rs. Save £25000 on the price of an rs3. Instead of the rs4 buy a vxr8. 6.2 v8 and a proper v8 rumble. Beautiful car.❤️
Both lovely cars. I think I'd go for the manual RS4..can't beat a manual box for driving pleasure. I have a Macan S (PDK only) and my wife has an S1 (manual only👍)....much prefer driving the S1..to the point that I'm going to sell my VX220 which I've owned from new and swore I'd never sell..the S1 gives me 75% of the pleasure and doesn't have to be pulled out of the garage on a sunny day. A manual gearbox just involves more...and I feel they are just more predictable at tricky junctions/roundabouts. Shame about the new RS4 only coming with that ZF Auto...🤔
I know what you mean about manual v auto but the ZF8 on my M-lite is totally predictable specially compared to the DCT in my daughters Audi which is an abomination.
Voi Vod I have to say, the DSG in my wifes previous car (Fabia VRS) was either all or nothing. I found the only way to drive it was to stick it into sport as you approached roundabouts to make it wake up...then quickly put it back in normal mode or it revved off into the distance like a 17 year old boy racer in a 1 litre Saxo!😁 The ZF 8 speed box is meant to be very good so it's good to get your 2penth worth on it. Thanks👍☺ Maybe I need to take an RS4 for a test drive...could be expensive though!!
The new A1 look a lot better than the old one. On the inside and outside. S1 is coming next year with 4 cylinder engine, 250Hp and Haldex 4-wheel drive. I want one!
Interesting video .. I have a sprint blue B7 avant and happily stand back and admire it when I step out of it ( sad but true) .. and I absolutely love it .. cruises on the motorway with ease ... does like a bit of fuel but if you cruise gently which it does very well then not too bad but what do you expect... I haven’t driven the newer ones but like those aswell ... going back to the B7 I’ve read that they may increase in value due to them being the last of the manuals .... cheers 🥂
18-20mpg average out of the RS4? Ouch! That's what I'm seeing from a 6.0 V12! Really tried to convince the missus to get a B7 RS4 Avant over a new Octavia vRS, actually glad I failed now!
The car is factory specification, its only upgrades being those mentioned; namely the brake upgrade and the Michelin tyres. While an aftermarket exhaust would improve the sound, they do sound lovely 'out of the box' :-)
👨🏻🌾Audi Partners were you racing them contraptions by my tractor 🤣 I have had similar variations to both cars reviewed. And in my humble opinion it’s testimony to RS4 that a decade on it can be compared with the new RS3 if you begin to look at any reviews on 10 year old Audi 3s it’s all about the Bam Bam 💥 engines etc which I have to be honest were ok but not game changers. Audi had the 5 cylinder format in the late 80s early 90s with the Quattro and the 2.2 coupes and they are legendary. Rally winners and it was many seasons for anyone to come up with an answer to the 5c Turbo Power the Audi’s made. And then they went away from that 🤷🏽♂️and lost. I hope 🤞 they can regain some of the best years in Motor sport again. I mean with the working class heroes of course- touring Car-Rally cars etc it keeps things more interesting 🙂 we all know the success of the R8s but unless most of us have Pablo Escobar as our employer it’s just not going too happen.and that’s from a BMW guy 👍🏽

Just wanted to say thanks for being completely unlike the other RUclips car bloggers. You didn't brag about cars you own, or come off as a pretentious twat, like so many do. You need to drive the brand new RS4/5, I had a 2018 RS3 Saloon, and the RS5 kills it once the speeds start to climb. I love my 2018 RS5 but wish we could get the RS4 here in the states.
Love both cars, have the rs3 saloon which is awesome. I bought the rs3 saloon as one of my fav cars is the rs4 saloon but no way could I afford one when it came out. £50k I think. The s3 would still beat the rs4 saloon though but who cares.
Nice video! What would you say about this rs3 compared to the current golf R? Is there a significant advantage of the audi in terms of steering and overall sportscar feeling? That the power and sound are better is clear. Thx for you thoughts jay
JayEmm on Cars yay...makes sense! But compared to the golf? I saw you drove both. I am thinking of upgrading, was blown away by the test drive..then again it‘s all too easy to be oberwhelmed by such a car;)
id pick the RS4 everyday ,...love that V8 Grunt..i have an Audi A4 2006 3.2 V6 quattro tiptronic paddle change and its no slowcoach, pulls like a train..i raced an RS4 once at the traffic lights same colour and model as on here, i put mine in sports mode launch control and rammed the pedal flat to the floor it red lined every gear ,the RS4 over took me by only a cars length it was in front.i kept up with it but didn't have any more power to overtake, you should of seen the smile on his face when we stopped at the next lights,i gave him the thumb up ,good one mate..
450- 470 bhp from an air filter cat back and remap , Doug at Mrc could`nt get that and he knows his onions look them up . More like 430-440 at best and you forgot the all important Decoke ........... lost interest after that. Yes i did own one and it was a stage 2 map / porting with precat deletes........
@@JayEmmOnCars I'm with you on the fuel consumption. Mine's only a summer car and with it being the avant we use it for camping. We live in Coventry and travel over to mundesley a few times. It costs a bomb 😁😁😁
£650 quid EACH for replacement shocks???? Eurocarparts - Bilstein shocks £153 front £143 rear. Why would you take your car to Audi. It may be an RS, but just find a specialist.
The English Trucker Audi is usually the only place that has the pump system to service stock drc system.. and not even all the Audi dealerships have it.
Comparison really doesn’t make sense, should be compared to the new Audi S3 manual, and that rs3 is more expensive than any B7 RS4 was when new, don’t know why you said they are the same.
Set hp and torque aside the v8 makes the rs4 both an incredibly efficient and civilised machine at the same time. And everything is supertight and nice, many were amazed how quiet mine was in daily driving , compared to sport mode on trackdays, just make sure to have it cleaned for carbon buildup in the intake. ruclips.net/video/NNIfI7WDvgQ/видео.html
Til my dying breath I will never understand why Audi decided to limit my B7 RS4 to 50% max throttle under 5,500rpm in the first three gears. This won engine of the year partly because of its astonishing torque curve, and Audi f**king HIDE IT??????
wow im shocked im getting 31 mpg on the motorway cruising at 65-70, i can average 25 mpg with roads and motorways. nail it and then see the figures he is getting. he must have a lead boot when driving :)
18-20 mpg is the average across a tank of fuel, where I tend to drive in mixture of conditions. I admit I've never seen an average for a whole journey of more than the 29 mentioned. It is true I enjoy spirited driving, though :-D Even at 31mpg, I think it's fair to say these cars are heavy drinkers ;-)
@@russellgreenie have you had a carrbon clean ? mine has done 127k and the fuel is spot on its better than my golf r32 when driven sensible. I have read when you start to get poor mpg its the carbon build up and also will be down on power. Im using the fuel as a markerr when to get it done. i drive 9 miles and it takes 30 mins over the m62 and m60 and its about 60mph with the traffic maybe 50 mph average and then stop start here and there. I get 25 mpg most of the time in the mornings. On the way home and can cruize at 70 and i get 30-31 mpg average with no stop start.
@@russellgreenie make sure you get it done propper not terraclean or any company that does that. This will bring back power and also mpg
Does anyone know how/where I can buy a set of the rims like the ones featured on the RS3 in this video? When I spec'd my 2018 RS3 they were not an option 😒
Sorry but rs4 engine was a real flop due to carbon build up, it never made 400bhp on dyno nevermind 414bhp. The current rs3 will wipe the floor with a B7
@@JayEmmOnCars no soul or character. I've driven my friend's APR stage 2 golf R mk6, arteon Ri line and c63s amg coupe, yeah they're fast cars but they're very dull and boring. Nothing like my EVO 8 MR where i can press a clutch and bang the gears
I've read it on multiple forums. From 1 - 3 gear below 5k rpm I believe it was. However, some say that it doesn't matter as the engine isn't capable of sucking in enough air at that point to begin with, so 50% is essentially "100%" of what the engine can produce at those levels.
@@Antero94 Exactly, just it is not torque that is limited. Throttle plate is limited to open to 50% in those rpms, so you have better control of the gas pedal (better resolution, doubled), but seems if you open it 100%, you get the same power/torque in those ranges as you said... Reason is, if you press gas pedal halfway, and you removed this limitation, you already at the full throttle. That's how I understood it.
I gave a click on this as I absolutely LOVED the B7 RS4 and thought would be a really interesting comparison...... but then I saw the video was half an hour long, and really sorry - but I simply don't have that much time to waste watching YT videos at my desk. I've no doubt it's a brilliant video - but at that length, I'm just going to have to pass. Sorry. :(
As much as I enjoy short YT videos myself, I feel that if we made a ten minute video you'd learn nothing that you don't already know. Why not put it on in the background on the way home and listen to it as a podcast?
I would like to watch but the passenger is annoying the way he express himself. It seems like he’s having a hard time telling a story. So maybe next time, good topic.
F audi for making the RS3 bc: (1) it's pointless making a beast like this as an automatics. If you're going to drive an auto sportscar, it might as well be a self-driving tesla. All you do is steer and brake anyway, & and there is little sport in that. (2) WHY put such a beast of an engine in a damn suburban STATION WAGON!!

Nice video! What would you say about this rs3 compared to the current golf R? Is there a significant advantage of the audi in terms of steering and overall sportscar feeling? That the power and sound are better is clear. Thx for you thoughts jay
I really want to try an RS3 without the adaptive dampers as I think they rob a little steering feel
JayEmm on Cars yay...makes sense! But compared to the golf? I saw you drove both. I am thinking of upgrading, was blown away by the test drive..then again it‘s all too easy to be oberwhelmed by such a car;)
Michel Herzog watch my S3 vs RS3 video if you have not, the S3 is basically a Golf R and much of what I say applies
thx - yes I watched that;) keep up the good work!
Thanks Michael
id pick the RS4 everyday ,...love that V8 Grunt..i have an Audi A4 2006 3.2 V6 quattro tiptronic paddle change and its no slowcoach, pulls like a train..i raced an RS4 once at the traffic lights same colour and model as on here, i put mine in sports mode launch control and rammed the pedal flat to the floor it red lined every gear ,the RS4 over took me by only a cars length it was in front.i kept up with it but didn't have any more power to overtake, you should of seen the smile on his face when we stopped at the next lights,i gave him the thumb up ,good one mate..
I'm putting my money on RS5. I drive S4 B6, and it is pointless to swap into b7 RS4. I'm V8 Addict.
You make things I’m usually not interested in, interesting.
Thankyou :)
I believe we covered the coking issue the last time the car was covered on the channel
Indeed; my bad on the power figure. Thank you for the correction :-)
U deserve way way more subscriber's
Thanks!
I’m sick of the rs4 blue see them everywhere. If it was up to I would buy an estate in grey or black
me two rims and windows all blacked out !!! that's what I bought 3 weeks be4 winter what a god dam tease !!! storage winter of course!
390bhp? Is it standard then? My b7 is running 430bhp with an mrc stage 2 map plus carbon clean.
Yes standard
@@JayEmmOnCars I'm with you on the fuel consumption. Mine's only a summer car and with it being the avant we use it for camping. We live in Coventry and travel over to mundesley a few times. It costs a bomb 😁😁😁
Came here for tractors and old tatt, these are far too polished ;)
Don't fear, I have plenty of tat to show yet!
At 20:09 it looked a bit like a new Mitsubishi or a r35 GTR... from far away
Re mapped rs4 460 brake? Not a chance my freind,440 stage 2 decat carbon clean air filter full miltec probs.
457 has been done
Only real RS models: b7 RS4, RS2, RS3 and Maybe c6 c7 RS6
lol @ maybe
I have had the b7 rs4 and now have a 8v rs3... both have there good points. But the rs3 is superior. And a lot faster...
How does rs3 feel, steering feel wise, road feedback? Also do you notice handling difference between haldex and torsen quattro?
Please review the mini clubman at 5:01!!!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
£650 quid EACH for replacement shocks???? Eurocarparts - Bilstein shocks £153 front £143 rear. Why would you take your car to Audi. It may be an RS, but just find a specialist.
The English Trucker Audi is usually the only place that has the pump system to service stock drc system.. and not even all the Audi dealerships have it.
Comparison really doesn’t make sense, should be compared to the new Audi S3 manual, and that rs3 is more expensive than any B7 RS4 was when new, don’t know why you said they are the same.
Now RS4 B7 is cheaper and much cooler than RS3.
Would’ve better to pit the rs3 saloon v rs4 saloon. They look very similar
Yes, but the hatch is what I had
the new audi Rs4 is a 2.9 litre
@@IanLianAnton The V10 is much better sound!1111!11one. He stated a fact, what are you on about?
I’ll take the B7 please! 😍
RS4 all day!
Rs4 b7 ❤
Rs4 definitely
rs4 all the way
Set hp and torque aside the v8 makes the rs4 both an incredibly efficient and civilised machine at the same time. And everything is supertight and nice, many were amazed how quiet mine was in daily driving , compared to sport mode on trackdays, just make sure to have it cleaned for carbon buildup in the intake. ruclips.net/video/NNIfI7WDvgQ/видео.html
B7 rs4 all the way, proper diff proper V8. Rs3 is a drag strip racing car. Imo glad I went for a c63.
What's it unlimited top speed then?
I hear tell of 180+mph for unrestricted standard cars. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen by me first hand, though :-)
Jamie West it is 186 MPH and the car will show 190 but gps will show 186 and that is where the gearbox maxes out.
Til my dying breath I will never understand why Audi decided to limit my B7 RS4 to 50% max throttle under 5,500rpm in the first three gears. This won engine of the year partly because of its astonishing torque curve, and Audi f**king HIDE IT??????
Are you sure about that?
Have heard this too, although I don't think it's 50%. Many remaps seek to eliminate that early limitation, in conjunction with an intake flap delete.
The new rs4 is a 2.9l the s4 is. 3.0l
supercharge itand youl ge 640 bhp
I would never retune my car until it's out of warranty.
60 k ish or rs 4. 2nd hand 15/20K Say No More
Blue crew!
wow im shocked im getting 31 mpg on the motorway cruising at 65-70, i can average 25 mpg with roads and motorways. nail it and then see the figures he is getting. he must have a lead boot when driving :)
18-20 mpg is the average across a tank of fuel, where I tend to drive in mixture of conditions.
I admit I've never seen an average for a whole journey of more than the 29 mentioned. It is true I enjoy spirited driving, though :-D
Even at 31mpg, I think it's fair to say these cars are heavy drinkers ;-)
I’m doing consistent early 20’s mid to late teens when pinned. Soo many variables to it, no two cars are the same...
Mark Park My car has only covered 74k and I don’t think it’s had a carbon clean. I think I’m due one. So I’ll do it over the winter.
@@russellgreenie make sure you get it done propper not terraclean or any company that does that. You need to have the inlet manifolds removed and wall nut blasted because the injector is on the wrong side of the valves to clean the carbon build up.ruclips.net/video/wrLZ2pubOa0/видео.html this video shows what they do mate. This will bring back power and also mpg
Rs4 anyday
Does anyone know how/where I can buy a set of the rims like the ones featured on the RS3 in this video? When I spec'd my 2018 RS3 they were not an option 😒
Audi Sport as a spare?
JayEmm on Cars looking for a full set....in the US, we don't have this option...or at least I didn't when I spec'd mine last year
Sorry but rs4 engine was a real flop due to carbon build up, it never made 400bhp on dyno nevermind 414bhp. The current rs3 will wipe the floor with a B7
To me dual clutch cars are rubbish. For that reason, 2006 RS4 all the way.
Why are they rubbish?
@@JayEmmOnCars no soul or character. I've driven my friend's APR stage 2 golf R mk6, arteon Ri line and c63s amg coupe, yeah they're fast cars but they're very dull and boring. Nothing like my EVO 8 MR where i can press a clutch and bang the gears
Are the RS4's born with 390hp, or is it only because of the carbon build up?
390hp is pretty good for a standard one
JayEmm on Cars So they are pretty much born with 390?
RS3 or M140I 🤔
OH NO WHERES LAWRY???????????????
Replaced sadly. But fear not. Things are happening!
The RS4 has less torque down low because torque is electronically limited to 50% from gears 1 - 3.
You sure about that?
Who the f was the other guy
Who me?
Maybe me?
Haldex.
No.
Wtf you talking every 3rd video apetite for springs 😂😂😂😑
lose some weight dude, and my compliments to the rs4 owner, it looks mint
F audi for making the RS3 bc:
(1) it's pointless making a beast like this as an automatics. If you're going to drive an auto sportscar, it might as well be a self-driving tesla. All you do is steer and brake anyway, & and there is little sport in that.
(2) WHY put such a beast of an engine in a damn suburban STATION WAGON!!
Comparing the v8 RS4 with a 4 cylinder - smells like you’re being scammed doesn’t it 😆
Five Cylinder
became very bored after 3 mins.
Well done for making car reviews so mundane.
Thanks. It's a shame you didn't stay for the bit with the fireworks and the topless dancers
