    Those perks are attractive only when you are young, uncommitted and have no fixed expenses. It is not something you really can combine with family and family life.

      depending on how your company pays you, you can automatically send a certain percentage of your paycheck to your home bank electronically...... My ship pays crew twice per month and I have it automatically set up so that 90% of my pay gets send to my home bank into my savings account :)

    Ship Life is like.....
    • Days of the week become countries
    • You have to turn on the TV to see the weather outside
    • When almost every night as soon as you close your eyes the alarm goes off
    • Happy hour can be every hour.
    • Where you can get drunk for $5 or less in the crew bar.
    • Hangovers can be blamed on seasickness
    • Hours back determine when parties are
    • You haven’t had 10 minutes alone since you walked onboard
    • Arriving at a new country usually consists of sleeping in and finding the free wi-fi
    • Sleeping in?
    • You haven’t known what day of the week it is for 6 months
    • Having a liquid lunch in the crew bar
    • Being solely responsible for tens of thousands of dollars with no sweat
    • Working less than 10 hours is considered to be "an easy day".
    • Partying with your bosses
    • It’s been 4 days since you’ve stepped outside
    • You’ve just spent a 16 hour day with the same people, so you go to dinner and happily spend the rest of the night with them
    • Packing is a nightmare
    • You can survive with one suitcase of cloths for 6 months
    • Seeing the captain at the gym is like seeing a movie star at the supermarket.
    • You smile even if you’re having a bad day
    • When you’re in the real world you stop yourself from saying hello to random people walking past you
    • Walking across the hallway and knocking replaces the need for a mobile phone
    • If you get a job on land you’ll feel naked without a name badge
    • You’re so far from home but seem to be surrounded by your family.
    • You have to be a contortionist to shave your legs
    • When you talk about how to spend your "hours off" not "days off".
    • Trying to identify the food in the crew mess.
    And so much more.....

    is it true cruise line workers are working 7 days a week 10 hour days ? if so how do you have time to see or do anything ?

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  8 лет назад +23

      That's true. as mentioned before, you will work every day of your contract- we get hours off not days. however, while I might have a 10 hour day here and there, all days aren't created equal. days at sea are much heavier in hours (as guests are onboard all day) than days in port. since most guests get off to explore, we then obviously need less of us onboard as well to serve them. we may be the one sticking behind sometimes, but we are also able to go out sometimes as well.
      If youve ever been on a ship, this is why we ALL look dead after a transatlantic cruise (7 straight days at sea).
      right now I'm fortunate enough to be on a ship with 12 day cruises that only have 2 sea days- this means I'm able to see A LOT.
      positions will vary though. the senior officers/captain have obviously a lot of responsibility so they will work more/go out less. but they also get paid a lot more for that to be the case, have shorter contract lengths and in some cases, longer vacations as well.
      oh yeah, and everytime we finish a contract we get 2 solid months off. work hard, play hard. how many jobs give you that? most where I'm from give 2 weeks a year.
      :)

    And I'm also on a selection process.. so, a lot of waiting for me!
    I'm going for the JACD position and I should be thinking about what to wear. Everywhere everybody talks about the clothes of the other positions, but I really have no idea about the kind of clothes and shoes that I should have, for the night events, in guests areas. I don't know how fancy should be...
    Is that your position? Because if you're not a JACD you should! Haha!
    You're really fun and with a lot of charisma! :)

    • @MichelleTimrox

      jacd as in junior assistant cruise director? which line?
      the best thing to do, if hired, is to ask your scheduler for the email of the cruise director (or whoever your boss will be).
      I know my cruise line is different from others, and its changed a lot in 5 years. our assistant cruise directors wear a uniform through out the day- all is provided but they need all-white shoes. at night, they wear their own professional chic clothes, heels etc.. but a couple years ago they wore a night time uniform with panty hose (if a lady) and all black closed toed shoes or heels..which most lines still do.
      we also used to have to bring things for theme nights- prepared for 50s night, 80s night etc. now our theme nights are pretty scripted and costumes are provided...
      it can all really vary, and that's why my best advice will be to reach out to your boss, find out the nights you'll have, etc. That way you'll have everything you need!
      I will be doing a packing video though when I'm packing to leave this ship ;)
      hope this helps!

    Hi !I did worked on cruise ships for almost 8 years as well,you are speaking only for 3 categories of crew members, high ranking officer, the entertainment staff and youth counselor ,that's why everyone see most of the "positive" videos about Life On Board as a Crewmember is "fantastic" ,because they got plenty time to go out wherever the ships docks,some of them most likely get paid by the Cruise Ship Company or the Recruiting Agencies to make those videos to attract slaves. Speak about mid management(like I was) and regular crew members with all kinda skills and trades,they barely see the outside world of the ship during a contract,if so,they will run to make a phone call to their loved ones, not too far from the ship, or to buy some souvenirs in port, also being constantly bullied 9-14 hours a day by the 3 bars or higher officer/manager. On top of that, the salary discrimination between different nationalities on the same job position offered on board.

    How often do you get to work on different ships? As in, some ships are usually around a specific region and do not sail to other parts of the world. Is it common for a crew member to be able to work on a ship that sails Alaska, then on another ship then sails Asia, then another ship that sails North America.

      YES! I just ended my current contract and am on my way home. I'll show you guys what I packed by unpacking ;)
      To give you an idea before the vid, I only have a carry on and ONE luggage (though most airlines if your flight was booked by the cruise line- and therefore they can tell in their system that you are a 'seaman'- will allow you 2 bags free when flying internationally). Some crew bring one bag and wind up buying a second during their contract for all the stuff they pick up along the way... And some people just require a lot of stuff and bring 2-3 bags outright. It's best (and more comfortable) not to be the later.

    Thanks!!

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  7 лет назад +1

      Oh yeah, tons of time. Depending on your schedule it could range from a couple of hours to the entire time the ship is docked (then you work the night when the ship sets sail). The way it generally works in ent is you share the load. When in port, someone always has to stay on the ship, as there are always guests that stay back and don't go out (no idea why they like doing this...the beauty of cruising is the ports...). Anywho, if there are 4 activity hosts (or 4 youth counsellors say), one will stay on with the guests and the other 3 can go out. At night, when the ship sets sail, the 3 that went out take over for the person that had to stay on and the person that worked the day has the night to themselves to relax. And you'd rotate, so you'd work every 4th port day. Everyone works alllllllllll day on an 'at sea' day. Those are the busiest. This is very general. If for some reason lotssss of guests are found to not to be getting back in a certain port or are always coming back early (this comes with experience of certain ports), they may choose to keep 2 people on instead of 1, but it's pretty rare that will happen. You may have to go back to the ship earlier for other duties, like gangway duty, captains club events, general help, etc. These things may not make any sense to you now, but they will when you start ;)

    I have sooo many questions. What's a good cruise line to go with if this is your first time? I'm in Saskatchewan (about as far away from the ocean as you can get in Canada) so what are the odds that I would be sent to a doctor near me for the physical? or would I have to do some driving (not sure if this is a question you can answer but i'm an optimist)? I still have yet to find any information on this but what is the training like? I'm assuming it's different depending on the department but what's the general length of time for training and what about if you want to change jobs for your next contract? When your contract is over I remember reading that you can decide when you would like to do your next contract which gives you time for vacation, so if I decide I want to do some traveling between contracts can I ask to be sent to a particular country when my contract is over or is it mandatory to be sent back home? How is the water on the ship? I heard it's very chlorinated. When it comes to rooming is it separated by gender or is it mix and matched? I'm assuming the former because having a bunch of young people in small areas for long periods of time is bound to lead to some hanky panky and no one wants to get pregnant on the ship. I want to go into either retail or entertainment so what can I expect in an interview? What kind of people do your co-workers (crew mates?) tend to be? Any particular jobs on board where previous education and training is a must? I am a 22 year old man (23 by the time I apply) and I would like to bring a stitch plushy on board (because stitch rules and anyone that says different has a cold black heart) so what are the odds I'll be made fun of for that? Also sorry for the long comment.

      Harry Shearman depends what you want to do in the future... I'd say chefs have more of a career path, leading to a well paid executive chef position if you're good, but bartenders can also become bar managers/ f&b managers

    Thank you so much for all the information on your videos. im waiting the Disney line cruise response about my application for Merchandiser host/hostess im from Uruguay and if they say ok i have to go to buenos aires for an interwiew with them. So all your videos REALLY help me to GET MORE and MORE exited about working on aboard.
    What do you know ABOUT the Merchandiser possition?
    Any information about DCL I must know?

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  8 лет назад

      hey hey! I don't work for DCL, but I have a friend who does and is in merchandise. he says all you really need is at least 2 years of merchandise experience and youve got to be outgoing and friendly. Disney will take the time to show you the rest- so make sure your personality shines when you land that interview!
      I'm not 100% on how it works there but where I am the position can be good. other than the tougher restocking days, when we are in port, the shops must stay closed (by most local laws you need to be 12 nautical miles from shore to sell on a ship)- this means the shops staff really get to enjoy the ports.
      as mentioned though, they sometimes stay on to stock or do inventory and the days at sea- when they sell the most- can be long hours. but if you have a great group working with you, it's all good!

      omg i cant describe in words how really i want to live this experience, first of all i really want to improve my english, and meet new people from differents places. I wish to have enough time to explore the ports
      and once again thank you for your videos they really help me to get a vision about working on abord

    Awesome videos and very good info! I am currently doing a minor in Cruise Industry in year 3 of university and I really want to apply for a job on a cruise line after I finish my studies. When you apply, how do you know which company you want to work for? And can you choose for the ship? My school only offers contracts with Holland America Line and NCL, but we can also apply ourselves to other companies. What would you recommend?

    • @Getalifeatsea
      @Getalifeatsea 8 лет назад +1

      Great question! I just wanted to throw an answer in here as I worked on cruise ships for 10 years with 4 different lines. I would recommend researching the other lines that your are interested in - go to their main websites - locate their employment pages (usually located in the footer) and then see if there are any hiring partners for those lines in your country :) I hope this info helps :)

    • @kevinmontgomery1383
      @kevinmontgomery1383 6 лет назад

      +Gabriela O, from my understanding, ships or cruise lines with an American Registry are bound to the laws of employment in that country. ie pay hours etc. If I am right, Holland America sounds like a good bet. If I am right and this is common knowledge, you will be up against a lot of applicants.

      Depends where you live and your job! For some in third world countries, the amount they make is enough for them to afford a house, sometimes even 2-3 properties because when the American dollar is changed into their home currency, they are pretty wealthy. Also if you are a high ranking officer, of course you can afford a house. But if you're like me, living in a 1st world expensive city with a job that didn't pay enough for me to have a house- you live with family
