    I did 4 contracts in the casino and worked my way up. You are off duty in ports and before you get into international waters. My heart goes out to the invisible staff like housekeeping. Avoid the dining rooms like the plague.

    Great info video .. When I took avocation on a cruise ship I asked the employees how they like their job they said they loved it they just wished they had nice cabins like the passengers apparently the workers have cabins down below with no windows you would be in the lower levels in very small cabins and you may have to be sharing that small cabin with other employees

    How long does this entire process take? From when you would first contact an agent to when you are leaving to start work?
    I'm asking for anyone who may currently be on a non cruise ship contract so they know when to begin the process

    • @coreyoz
      @coreyoz 7 лет назад +1

      the entire process can take anywhere from a couple months to what I have heard 8 or 9 months. Mine took 3 months. With a background check, medical, several certifications and credentials that need to be lined up before you get onboard and finally the wait period to when a position is open, it can take a while.

    Hi there, I have recently discovered your videos and absolutely adore you and your personality. I had a question about the medical you go through to work on board obviously not assuming that I expect you to know everything but I am going to ask anyway. What types of medical conditions can get you tossed out? Like I'm Diabetic but can handle all of the requirements I just have to maintain my meds could I miss the opportunity because of my blood sugar? Or what about mental health conditions if you're medicated and completely consistent without incident? I love your channel and I appreciate you taking your time to read this.

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  7 лет назад +1

      Migglez depends on the job! if you are looking at something entry level I'd say personality is the most important as the rest can be trained. but if you're going into something as a specialist or a manager position, qualifications is a much bigger factor.

    All information would be super awesome ... Thank you so much

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  7 лет назад +2

      Just be super friendly and positive.
      I don't know what position you are applying for, but all lines like people with a great smile, that they get the sense can wow their guests by going over and beyond all expectations.
      Say a guest is angry...do you simply calm the situation and pass them off to your manager? Or are you someone that then checks up on them the next day to see how they're doing and if their experience has improved? These are the sorts cruise lines want :)
      Friendliness is super important. Not only that you'll be great with the guests,, but they also want to know that you can get on easily with your colleagues, who you'll live with, that will be from 60+ different nationalities :)
      Good luck!

      It's best to ask a recruiter about this. If you can hear perfectly with it, I don't see why it would be a problem. I'm blind as a bat without my contacts- but I did my test with my glasses on and with that I'm 20/20- that didn't hurt me at all!

    Hey girl! I just got hired at carnival, but have to lose a little weight before I can start. Can you elaborate on the medical? I'd super appreciate.
    Hope to see you on the seas!

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  8 лет назад +2

      Hello hello!
      You’re gorgeous darling! I can only see the pic, but I’m sure you don’t need to lose any weight. There are no requirements for that onboard- we’re all different shapes, sizes, skin tones, backgrounds, etc.
      The medical is pretty simple though there are a lot of parts. They’ll test your vision (near and far sightedness, test for color blindness, etc), ears (whisper test to ensure you can hear), your mobility (they’ll make you move all your joints- hands together, back of hands together, arms up, flexing, bending over, bending the knees, etc). A lot of this part would happen in a standard checkup.
      You’ll have blood taken so they can ensure there’s nothing wrong there and a urine test to screen for pregnancy (in females of course), overall health (sugars, etc) and drugs (they are looking for things like marijuana, cocaine, etc… to the company if you have things like this in your system, you aren’t healthy.. and if you buy or sell on land, you might buy or sell on the ship…which would be a problem for the ‘shipping’ industry, right?)
      You’ll also have a chest x-ray taken to ensure everything looks A-OK.
      Essentially, once you are onboard your medical needs (should any arise) are covered by the company. So, in order to make sure they won’t need to spend a ton of money on taking care of you, they’ll hire you on once you prove you’re fit for duty (fit to not be an expensive setback). It’s not like police training- you won’t have a psych eval or run an obstacle course/beep test. But you do have to disclose any current health problems/ meds being taken, things/surgeries that have happened in the past, etc.
      In my company there is a list of approved doctors we can go to. You can’t just go to your family doctor and this is to ensure the honesty/integrity and accuracy of the results.
      Hope this helps a tad. Good luck!

      Yes, I was informed I have to get my BMI closer to 30, but the person I'm in contact with at CCL is awesome.
      Do you know if any pre-existing medical conditions would disqualify someone? I have one kidney (I got a gnarly infection) and a hysterectomy.
      I only take a hormone replacement.
      Any insight is so helpful. Love your videos! Totally getting me siked for me new gig!

    What education would I need before getting interested in the child part on board, like the child care or activities? I live in Australia so what tafe course would be best? E.g. business, entertainment, hospitality, child care? (I think Aus tafe is like American collage)

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  7 лет назад

      It's not so much the education but the experience :) Some Youth Counselors are teachers and they do duty on cruise ships during their breaks from school- my personal degrees are in sociology/criminology, public relations and baking! So no child care schooling whatsoever- however I had done jobs where I had done a lot with kids, so that helped me. If you can get into a day care, coach a team, work at a place kids frequent (fun house, kids restaurant, etc), be a mascot, help run kids programs at a YMCA, summer camp- literally anything that means your spending time with kids will help. I worked for an MLS football team (Toronto FC) and worked with the kids, training them how to perform the opening ceremonies/ halftime shows etc- I also worked in a Kool-Aid activation for a whole summer where we set up a full on playhouse everywhere we went, was a camp counselor etc...Just to give you an idea (plus I'm an aunt).
      You do need to have a degree, so make it in what you're interested in and gain the experience in your work life :)

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  7 лет назад

      It's a slightly tougher job as far as the revenue jobs are concerned (revenue jobs are spa, casino, shops, photo.. etc). The shops are good because when you're in port, they aren't allowed to be open, so these guys get that time off (or have the occasional meeting/ restock/merch shift). As a photographer, you won't be able to sell in port so your shop will also be closed. However you will always be one of the first crew up in the morning and off of the ship, taking pics of guests as soon as they start leaving the ship/entering the new ports- and you'll be out there in any weather condition until the majority are off. You then get a break to go out and tour around, but you'll be back onboard for dinner, taking photos of people at their dinner seatings/ formal pics etc. You'll open up shop and sell these photos as soon as the ship leaves port.
      If you're looking to do creative photography, this won't be for you (if you're an artist) as you'll be taking a lot of pics of PEOPLE. But if you're just in it for the experience, these are the people that love their jobs in the photo gallery. If you like and are good at video/editing- being in the broadcast dept tends to be an even better job/ a bit more creative if you're in it for the art ;)

      Hey there Meghan! I worked onboard cruise ships for 10 years and then in cruise recruitment for another 5 - in answer to your question - some lines do pay for your flights right from the get go - other lines will require that you pay for your initial flight and then they cover all flights thereafter. Most every line will provide your accommodation the night prior to your joining your ship. I hope this info helps :)

      I would say to be a sous chef you'd need education- but it depends on the type of experience you have. If you're a sous for a resto that has say one or two michelin stars, you'd be pretty favourable.
      Put it this way, the last executive chef I had's job prior to working onboard my ship was cooking for Queen Elizabeth (and her corgis) at Buckingham Palace. Could you be a sous to that type of experience? They also cook a ridiculous amount of meals each day- something like 30,000- are you used to this sort of pressure??
      If the education or experience isn't there per say, they'd probably start you as a prep chef (in and around there) and have you work up. The ships promote from within so doing a good job gets you noticed quickly.
      But again, I'm not HR- this is just what I've seen/know ;)
