Winner of a video, been searching for "work on a cruise ship summer" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Jiyrianna Peyadelyn Plan - (do a search on google )? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my m8 got excellent success with it.
This is EXTREMELY HELPFUL!!!!!! Very honest & thoughtful. You just saved your viewers from incredible shock & disappointment. Glad I can consider all these factors before changing careers. All the other ship life videos are superficial or don't cover these issues in detail. This video is exactly what i was looking for and answered my questions. I had been wondering if you work non stop during a contract. I read online that you do not work during port days or that you have a few hours off. I worked retail during college so i think i can handle guests but idk about working non-stop, by nature i love to unwind. THANK YOU!
cherishdeb Thanks for watching! And yes I am glad this helped you with a little more depth. It is my main goal to be as neutral as possible and give the pros and cons of everything. There are a bunch of "grumpy" videos out there, but Its very important to make your own decision. You will be working every day for sure, but depending on your position and department it may be shifts or just little bits of work throughout the day. My job required all day everyday. Something along the lines of the shops may be shifts and during the ports you wouldn't work because the shops are closed. There are lots of factors and I have some more videos coming soon with some more aspects of this crazy world of working on ships! Thanks so much again for watching!
John Gleason You`re welcome and THANK YOU so much! All of the videos and your comments are of great assistance to many of us. Sincere respect for your work!
Sanja Maric it is a challenging but fulfilling line of work with the right mindset. Its nice to see families and couples and travelers come on and have a nice vacation that they have been saving up for. They certainly make up for the small percentage of rude entitled guests. You just gotta remind yourself! :)
I learned more from you in 15 minutes then i learned on my own researching for hours. And you made it all very simple and left me with the simple things I know to look for. Well done video. Thank you for the video and info.
I went on a Royal Caribbean cruise 5 years ago and asked different crew members who had different jobs on the ship. The first person I asked was our maid, she was from a country in South America; she was sweet and pleasant to talk to. She did explain that she was at sea if I remember correctly she worked a month to a month and a half at a time. I asked if she missed her family and she did of course. The one benefit she said she had was use of the free internet as an employee but only when she was off duty. Another young girl who was a massage therapist said that if your a worker like me your stuck living in the bowels of the ship below the water line in a tiny room bunking with other people, no privacy. She explained that the people who were entertainers got treated far differently than the regular crew workers. They got to leave the ship on all the excursions, much better living conditions and pay was tremendously better. I did see the entertainers go on excursions with us and they seemed much happier than the rest of regular crew workers. The thing I noticed and have read elsewhere and that you don't see a lot of Americans working as crew members because it is believed that Americans don't have a strong enough work ethic. The crew members tend to be nicer to people of their own origin and was sometimes frustrating. Theres a lot I have forgotten and left out but if your considering working on a cruise ship as one employee said, think of it as a hotel you work at but cant leave for month to months at a time and you live in the basement with other people. Many I talked to said they would do this for a few more years regardless of the contract they signed. I remember when I was in Massage Therapy school recruiters came from a cruise ship line. I asked probably 10 very direct questions about the living conditions and what was expected of you. All I can say is the guys giving the presentation were remarkable how they danced around my questions and never giving a straight answer. Be careful if your considering this type of work; there are very strict contracts that you sign. One important thing before you decide to take a vacation on a cruise ship, make sure you do your homework in regards to the off board excursions. I asked friends of mine where to go and so forth so that we would be safe. My girlfriend at the time didnt listen and took advice from the cab driver as to which bar on the beach was the best to go to. This was in Cozumel. After we left she told me that one of the servers kept asking her he wanted to show her something; don't turn your back for very long! We learned later that day from one of the crew members that a girl was just recently given a roofalin and you can guess the rest; that bar was the one right next to us ten feet away. Plan your excursions carefully beforehand.
Here's my advice: Learn an instrument, and work as a cruise ship musician. It's probably the greatest and most coveted/envied position on a cruise ship. I've even started vlogging about it if you want to learn more. But it's pretty awesome, and worth trying at least once.
I was with Morris Day and the Time for 8yrs, we played 3 cruise ships. But now on my own as a (non-reading) funky guitarist/ vocals, I'm ready so ready to play with a Party Band or Top 40 group. Any advice? Too, I'm 58y.o. I'm on Facebook: Sylvester Donald Jr. Thanks.
John: I used to be a travel agent and once I worked with Princess Cruises as a Crew Travel agent which my job was to arrange the crew's travel between/to/and from the ships and this was fun and the atmosphere was awesome however it was a seasonal job. One thing you must ask people on your videos is Do you get claustrophobia? Cause their crew accommodations could be an inside cabin and a good percentage are inside. Also the fact that you have to mingle only on your time off in the crew locations on board (eg.bar/eating areas/etc). But, you are right all in all if you show you are a great worker and stress doesn't bother you one bit, the cruise lines are for you. If you know ways to appease that 2% of difficult passengers, the cruise lines are gonna hunt you down to work for them and one industry that you can work with is a travel agent working in a customer service office where you answer calls from easy to very difficult clients-this is the test to see if you are cruise worthy. Also you have to answer peoples curiosity about and when prospective people want to know about working on a ship that they don't get their own cruise cabins on the majority of cruises. All in all I love this video.
Thank you for watching and thank you for some fellow professional level insight! Yes the claustrophobia thing could come into play, id say its not as bad as you do not spend much time in your cabin aside from sleeping and getting ready.
I know this comment is a year old but I saw a post from a guy called Dylan Ryan on facebook saying that they're hiring on Princess Cruises I have a few questions 1) How long would I be working there? I don't mind it being long but I'm just wondering 2) What's the pay like 3) Can I bring my laptop (that's all I use in my spare time) 4) Do you have options on what position you want (given that you're qualified of course) 5) I'm not from the US so what if an emergency happens and I urgently need to get home?
I am with Princess Cruises 15 years. You are right about the claustrophobia. I almost went crazy my first contract. OMG. Now I am a 3 stripe officer and have my own cabin with a porthole! I can eat at the buffet too. Crew can go to the crew bar, crew lounge, crew fitness area, and many ships have a crew area with a pool at the front of the ship.
Finally someone who tells it like it is.. So many offer jobs to others but dont tell it the way you did do.. good job..Im sure it will help a lot of people understand what its like and then if they choose it they'll have nothing to wine about later as they had all the info..
Yes! That is what i am hoping. I wanted to give a clear, clean cut opinion about my experience and make sure to let people know that it may not be all sunshine and rainbows....but its worth it.
I recently went off my depression and anxiety medication (with help from my doctor) and that was my only big concern. I really think I would love the job.
Thank you for making these videos!! I have ALWAYS been so intrigued with ship life! Plus you're super entertaining! I wrote up a resume for becoming a shipboard photographer, but I can't muster up the courage to send it in. My family would be extremely disappointed if I broke away from their standards. They would NOT support me and would have nothing to do with me when I come back. My family disowning me is the ONLY thing that makes me hold back from sending that resume in. But my heart keeps pulling me in the direction of working onboard. Even hearing all the bad things about working on ships I still can't get it off my mind ,It's literally all I can think about. Sorry for the novel of a comment but I really needed to get that out there lol!! Keep up the good work with the videos they are great! :)
I am glad to hear that you enjoy the videos! and you find me entertaining! It makes me happy. Yeah taking that step and making that decision to enter the world of ship life is tough. Not only is it a huge sacrifice for yourself, but your friends and family on land too. I completely understand the whole upsetting thing, but have you ever talked to them about it? Let them know how you feel and how much you think about it? Maybe if you break it down to them and they can see how passionate you are about it, they may be a little more open to it? I am not sure as I do not know your family relationship but Id say its worth a shot. Especially given how much you think about it. :) Thanks for watching and be on the lookout for some more info vids too!
Thanks so much John. I have found these to be enormously helpful. I like to be prepared. I am a retired teacher and am going through the process for possible hire with a major cruise line. I am only at the video stage so I think you helped me a lot to present some important points.
I sure will. I am hoping to advance to the next stage of the hiring process. I truly believe that this would be a great second career for me. I will keep you posted
1st time to run across a not annoying video about working on a cruise ship. Not annoying at all. And its 4 fcking am !! Love it dude, will watch all of them!
Thanks for this video, really helpful. my dad work's in royal Caribbean international, and its my child would dream to be like my dad but go there own my own. so thanks a lot.
Thanks for posting. My son (age 17) is seriously considering a career in the cruise line industry. After He graduates high school this year, he is going to community college for 2 years to earn an associates degree in mathmatics then he plans to enlist as an officer candidate in the United States Navy where he hopes to study navigation and be a navigator on a war ship. After he serves his country, he then hopes to get a job in the cruise ship industry as an officer working on the bridge as a navigator with hopes of climbing the ranks. We go on a cruise very year (perhaps why he wants to work in the cruise industry as a career) but we keep telling him working on a ship is a lot different then being a passenger as he is used to. We keep explaining to him that working on a ship is NOT an 8 hour work day then he can go for a swim in the pool, relax on deck, or enjoy a show. We also explained many areas are also off limits to the crew unless you are working/assigned there but he still would not listen to/believe us. Your video really put a lot of things in prospective for him to think about. Thanks for posting.
Excellent Video! Forgive me for butting in, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you researched - Natipaan Cruiser framework (just google it)? It is a great one of a kind product for reveals insider secrets of the cruise industry without the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my work colleague finally got astronomical results with it.
Homesick? Ain't no one home for me to miss that much. Lacking communication from people at home? Barely talk to people anyway. No problem. My only issue is internet... Especially with needing my anime fix. o_o
There will be internet, its not free on the ship and its not fast. You would probably find some places in port that is faster...so Downloading things and bringing it with you would probably be better.
Thanks for this! I am about to go to a Job fair, for NORWEIGAN. This helps so much, im also a comedian and Tshirt lover, so my instints tell me im on the right path!
Vance Conner -- In regards to home sickness and not having easy contact with people from home; yeah. An introvert would have an easier time coping. Remember; "introvert" =/= "shy/asocial/social anxiety/etc". Probably the main thing that'd be annoying for an introvert is sharing a room for lower level workers.
Yes.. You are really great open minded very humble, practical and didn't hide any aspects thats really happening in cruise ship to the workers. Thanks a lot my friend. Its so useful tips for everyone who really wants to ride on wide cruise ships to get a job. Cheers buddy.
You may have to arrange with a drug store in one of the ports to get it refilled. Most of the US ports (Home ports) for the major cruise lines have a drug store close by. You can also speak with the medical staff and perhaps they can arrange to get shipments sent to them.
I used to work abroad and i loved it. I missed my family but i don't mind not seeing them for 6-8 months as they drive me nuts. Plus i am a bit of an introvert so being alone and far away from home does not bother me. Used to working weekends and holidays and yes i follow rules 😊
Hi John,Thank you for the video.Im really interested in entry level Jobs in a cruise ship.Im a Kenyan with 3 years experience of working as housekeeper in the middle east. How can I apply for the jobs?.
Hello Saraphina! Thanks for watching and I am happy to help provide some more information to you. I actually just uploaded a video about the application process and where to look and its actually quite simple, just lots of options. So each cruise line has at the bottom of their website a link for Jobs. Once clicking on that link it will take you to the employment page which will be broken down into departments. Some of them are even broken down by country where you are applying from. There is also another web page allshipjobs.com which has job listings from many different sized cruise lines. Some cruise lines that may only be based over seas and not out of America. If you know which cruise line you would like to work out, check out their main web page and follow the links for employment. If you are not sure or it does not matter which cruise line you work for then that All Ship Jobs page may be a good start. With your housekeeping experience in the middle east, was that with a specific chain of hotels? Please let me know if you have any other questions and again, thanks for watching I hope I was able to help out. Even if it was just a little bit!
Dude! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I had my interview for Norweigan Cruise Lines, hopefully I get my offer letter, and then I should be heading to get my Certifications and Physical exams!! WOOOOOO this video HELPED SO MUCH!
John Gleason sorry i was watching 1,2,3... make more video :) and all i can find is luxury cruise job, u said somewhere there is other company not 5* to ask for job , and thanks for very helpfull videos
YEs! I have a bunch of videos up and more on the way. There are other cruise lines, like Carnival, NCL, ROyal, Celebrity that are not luxury. You can start with those!@
Oh boy, stress. I'm not one who could handle stress well although I can if needed. I worked in a preschool, I know stress. Currently looking into working in a children's area of a cruise ship so I can tell, that will be like the stress of working in the preschool but amplified times ten. Although I'm not the best when it comes to stress, I enjoy it. It's weird, I guess I like that it gives me a more interesting story to tell because I love sharing my experiences & it gives some interest in the day. A stress free day is super boring. I always feel like nothing happened if there's no stress & that frustrates me.
+1991birthday Yes stress will be in play, but like you said...it makes a better experience! More of a story and it helps you grow more than a non stressful job!
+John Gleason i really dont need that much and i can handle stress well but i need to be able to have a relaxing peaceful shit what are the cabin bathrooms like? and can you use the general ship ones
Hey man I'm 20 years old and want to take a year or two off of college to work aboard a cruise ship. I have done a lot of research and am positive it is what I want to do, what website should I go too or step should I take to pursue this dream? Thanks!
a majority of them require 21 and older. There are some jobs i have seen that had someone under 21 working. Dancers and Spa staff. But again, not many.
What are accommodations and food like? Do you share a room? Does the cabin have a window? Can you get your own room? I heard some jobs like laundry workers hardly ever see the light of day.
+Corn Fed The accommodations will depend on you job title. Most cabins are shared with a roommate, but some people have their own with a window...or not. All shared cabins do not have windows so get ready for some amazing sleep! As far as some of the crew members not ever seeing the light of day, a lot of them do not have guest area privileges but there are crew areas with windows and an outdoor crew area as well. For the food, check out my newest video with some info on what to expect for food. ruclips.net/video/UtEPtf55_T0/видео.html
+Corn Fed im looking to be a croupier on a ship (i already work in a casino as one) what hours are the casino open and when 1 cruize ship finished as in the equivalent of a flight finishes what so you do? do you get 1 or 2 days off or is it straight to another one?
Depending on your position. You will have to share a room with people a majority of the time. When you work your way up, you may have the ability to have room to your self.
Hello .sir , i am ashar,I got a one of opportunity to work as an environmental officer .so coming week have to face an interview.pls give a some help full ideas for getting this opportunity

Hmm. Not sure how i can help you stand out more resume wise, but I would just be yourself and be honest with your abilities. I am sure you will do fine!
Daniel Lawes Hello Daniel, So with those subjects you studied, what did it entail? Can you provide a little bit more info so I could narrow it down a bit. There are so many different jobs on board a ship. Remember, its like a floating City. Let me know and I will be happy to help!
I am truong, I from Viet Nam. I am 25.and I was graduated from Viet Nam maritime university.and I am a machine engineer but I leave my school I went to hotel. It isnt a ship .A 3 star hotel in my city in Cat Ba island,in there I work as a waiter and after 2 months I became a deputy division.but i want to improve my life,my eyes,my thinking about others country and things that i dont know.my country is poor, you know.so, can i have opportunity to work in cruise ship ?.and if you help me, i am very glad about that.thank so much.
+BILL CLOD Of course, you can get it. Anh có thể apply vào Star Cruises, Costa, VN hiện tại có FICC for SC & SGtourist for Costa. Im an Embarkation Staff on board :)
There are crew gyms and if you are on a front-facing position like maybe a bartender or an entertainer, you can use the guest gym when it isn't too busy
I'm a bartender and already deal with a bunch of this crap. I love it. This sounds like taking the dial and cranking it up to 11 though. I'm here for it, but I have a few questions. Generally, what were your ship's policies about having a drink after work to unwind? I like to do that. How about dating? On that note, how much do you really even get to hang out with your coworkers or guests outside the immediate job? Is there enough free time between shifts to do stuff like go to the gym, read, play my guitar etc. or was it like "I slept, now back to work"? How long did your contracts typically last? Could I do a 6 month or year stint then go "nah" or am I bound up for several years? Were bartenders on your ship usually tipped or salaried, and on average which was better? How much did a wifi or cell phone card typically cost onboard, and how much of a discount did employees get? How long were your stints between ports (it sounds like you were coastal, so I guess that really depends on the company), and your breaks before departure? Did you get any chances to actually see the areas you arrived at, or was it like "oh yay, another dock"? Just curious.
+joemc111 Hello Joe, if you check out allshipjobs.com they would have a listing of any electrician jobs available. However, being 65 I am not too certain you would be considered as a new hire. Not to say that there are not older crew members, but most of them have been doing it from a younger age. If you still wanted to try, please feel free. Just please keep that in your mind when doing so.
What happens if you get sick on board when you are meant to work? Like you come down with something that lasts a couple weeks and really knocks you down, do they expect you to still work or do you get some kind of sick time to recover for those cases? edit - Just watched your video on this topic so no need anymore :p, thanks for the videos.
Fired? Done? Do they just drop you off at the next port and you're supposed to get home on your own or..? Cause I'd be down for that. Dropped of somewhere new, start a new life .. :p
Not so Simple. Ha, if you are an american citizen for example you need to wait until you are back at the home port to be sent home. If they do fire you in a foreign port (from your home country) you will have a certain amount of time to get to the airport and go home. Only a small window until visa's and what not expire and you can get arrested.
I know this video is old and I don't know if you will see this but I am 15 and was just on a Royal Caribbean allure of the seas cruise ship and I was talking with the teen staff and it just hit me hard that this is what I want to do in my future life and I know I am young but I just need like a check list of what is required to guarantee me a job. I can make games from what I was taught through school I am friendly and funny and just want to give people a great time like the time I was given. I have never felt so strong about such a job even though I am a little scared I know I will have an amazing fun time.
That is awesome! What you need to do know is see if there are any jobs at any day camps or sleepaway camps near you. That would get you great experience and exposer to help you start developing the skills needed for this job. Then your schooling should include child care and things along those lines.
Hey! thanks for watching. If you check out video number 2, it has some instructions on the application process. ruclips.net/video/r7FGMeCeCqg/видео.html
1.Are you ready to be away from home? For a long time. ?? 2.are you willing to Work long hours. 3.are you good at following rules?!? 4. Do you like to save money??🤑 5. Do you enjoy customer service.? 6.do you like to work with guest? Oh my got this is just first 7 But there are lot more 👌
Hi man I am about to go and work on a Royal Caribbean Ship in California. I live in East EU so I will have to fly all the way to California I just want to know, this working ever day thing, sound horrible, is it really that way? no human can do that without passing out. Is it really that way? or because of shifts, you get to have more hours free for yourself because today I work during day and tomorrow I start working at 23 at night so I have the whole day free tomorrow. The same I would like to know where's the salary paid? account or cash?
E I N S Hey thanks for watching and congrats on the job! Its totally an amazing experience but its all what you make of it. What kind of work will you be doing onboard? So the whole working everyday thing is not as bad as you think, its more like you work a shift that could be anything from 8-11 hours every day. That shift may also be broken in 2 parts, one for morning and one for evening. If it is a port of call day, you may not have to start work until after back on board time....so you may work shorter hours that day. BUt days at sea you will have a much longer day. Naps and coffee will become your friend for Sea days, but the other days you work with all the same people who pretty much become your family so its not so bad. Again, its what you make of it. If you come in and start hating everything, there is no escape from it. As for pay, being from the east EU you will probably set up some sort of crew card or crew account (which works like direct deposit.) When i first started they paid your bonuses in cash and that was nice....until you had to go back home and fill out a customs form. Even for a US Citizen like myself....it was not fun to have to claim extra money. Luckily banks have gotten more advanced here so i could deposit the cash to my account before heading home. Let me know if you have any more questions! I would be happy to help!
John Gleason Thanks for the reply John. I will be working in the Food & Baverage Department. I asked about the salary because some guys said they were being paid cash and I don't know what to think anymore if it's either cash or card. Anyway I will find out when I get there, you are right with the border control though. When you work on a ship, for what country you work? Is there a work permit for a country whatever that is? or it's a different law for people working on ships and basically you don't work for any country. They give me a transit viza to get from the airport to the ship I was just wondering for whom will I be working. USA? Bahamas? France? and so on... I don't find these answers anywhere people don't seem to be interested in what I am interested in. I think it's important to know and to be briefed in advance. Thank you John
E I N S Hey man of course! So regarding who and where you work. It would all be based on where the home office of the cruise line would be based out of. I know for example Carnival is in Miami Florida, so i was working as a Florida Employee and paid some of the Florida Taxes. The weird part for me at least is as an American we pay our Social Security and City and State taxes out of our pay check, but working on a ship they never really too much of those taxes out (Social security not at all) because of the weird Land/Sea job base. It was ok, but when i did my tax return, my return was not as nice. With you and the Viza situation, a bunch of my friends would get an extension on their when they sign off so they can stay in the states for a mini vacation for a couple of days. Its sometimes a bit extra leg work for simple things due to this line of work. You cant just do anything without having to have an ID or fill out some form or wear a badge. But, where else will you get paid to travel the world and work with people from over 55 different countries. That my friend, is worth it. Any other questions you have please let me know! I will try and brief you with as much info as possible. It will definitely help with the first couple of days on board.
John Gleason Thanks man, what do you know about my VISA C1D? they changed my ship i will now leave from Sweeden --> Islanda --> Canada --> USA. Will i be able to get down in Canada or USA and visit? i don't have a Canada VISA but i see that my ship goes even in Russia and Canada. C1D is a transit crew member visa, can i vist with it? how does it work? people going on a cruise, the passengers have VISAs for all the countries they visit?
E I N S I know when the ships were based out of one of the States all the foreign staff had an I9 they had to carry in the US ports. Any other port they would have their Cruise ship ID...which would work as a all in one pass. Over seas, you would have your passport, but the Staff Admin hangs onto it for your entire contract and your cruise ship ID Card will work for all ports. With the port of Dubrovnik Croatia, since it was not part of the EU all guests needed to have their PASS PORT ontop of their room keys and photo ID's. Crew on the ships only need their ID CARD. Its like a one stop shop.
Check out my book "Confessions From Below Deck: A True Account of My Cruise Ship Life" to get an inside look at what life is like onboard a cruise ship!
i was looking for get this job immediately.Like ready to hard work, speaking english well and good mental absolutly. know I'm still 19 years old, than I'll take it collage in august 2016. after that my plan is l'll take it job in hotal. coz I was read to get job in this ship, u must I should have experience working in a hotel. then I asking my self are u ready for that ?.... Oh yeah. But one problem my body high it's still 147cm . I read one article said that height is important?... Oh Gosh . whether height influence,sisn't?... please anybody who know well please tell me .
+Ida Hapsah thanks for watching! Yes i would recommend getting a job that you feel would help you gain experience for the shop. Gain as much knowledge as you can, it will only help you more! As for height, i dont see being shorter creating a problem. I knew plenty of people who were a little shorter and they managed just fine. Again it would depend on the type of job you were looking into doing though.
John Gleason +well I get it. don't say thanks it's my duty for looking my dreams become true from your video. and know how to get my self ready for take my job in cruise line.and i should say thanks for your video and answer my question absolutely helping me. anyway my body grew 2 cm. I just little worried about it.
Useful questions but I already asked myself all of these. So probably I have a good view of what working on a cruise is like. The thing is though, I am figuring out what kind of job to apply to. I have a lot of interests. I work as a team leader in airport security for 9 years so I have some people skills in dealing and solving problems with people from around the world. Also in handling stress and being flexible. Actually I love hectic moments more than down time. I also did 10 years of steward and tour guide in a football stadium. Again, working with people and being a host / security. In the stadium tour guiding part I also greatly enjoyed working with children; there were lots of them coming to have their birthday parties. Having a creative mind full of ideas, I am also into personal development and like public speaking (hence the tour guiding) / doing workshops and setting up games.
Sounds like you have a good ground base of several different jobs. It just a matter of narrowing it down to something you can see yourself doing. Think of it as a hotel, if you were to work at a hotel....what would you do?
+Theng Hew Thank you! I worked with Carnival Cruise Lines and I worked in Entertainment as Assistant Cruise Director and had to fill in as Cruise Director several times. It was mostly guest interaction and activities.
+John Gleason right I see sounds fun:D but must be stressful at time I'm guessing! I'm liking the idea of being a beauty therapist and working on a cruise ship? Do you have any advices on that? Hard working? Etc. Do you go off the ship when it stops at each places/areas?
+Theng Hew All jobs will have a time to get off the ship. For anything spa related there are companies that are hired by the cruise line to employ all the spa staff. You pretty much work at a spa, but at sea and would be busy and filling up with appointments all day. They also encourage you to sell the products they offer so you would need to work as a sales person of sorts too. If you enjoy doing it, it would be great....and you would get to travel too!
Thanks John, it's not for me. seems like they treat the crew like 2nd class citizens. I'm used to getting special treatment as a musician not less. I suggest y'all start a union and strike. every musician should have a private room with a view, be able to use all the amenities, and make good money too. That's how I'm treated on shore/land. why should a boat be any different. all the best to those who have no choice but to do what they say! make a union!
+larryjohnny yeah it is interesting, but the only performers that get any special treatment and have their own cabins would be the Singers, Fly on Entertainers and soloists. Might not be a rooms with a view, but your own cabin is well worth it. Only because of the location of the crew cabins....gotta save the views for the guests. A benefit to the musicians on board, especially the soloists....you get paid to travel and you have a new audience of 3000 + people that change every couple of days. I dont think someone who is already set in the industry would work on a ship, its a good launch pad. Help them get a feel and some experience and sell some CDs. :)
If the salary was higher I would do it, but it's way under paid. It's a form of exploitation to work this long for such a low pay. At least if you're from the US or Europe IMO... Great video though.
+Rizzo III or Australia. Or many other places actually. haha, people can't imagine working for that kind of money considering the Australian minimum wage is more than DOUBLE that of the US in the first place. It's crazy.
I am sorry to hear that. Yes there are rules and you will work hard....but you travel for free and get to meet people from all around the world. Its not for everyone. But if you are up for the challenge....then its worth it.
When you break it down, yes the wages are low. However, there are aspects that balance it out. It is not for everyone. If you want to get into it for the money, its not the career for you. Its all about Travel and Hospitality.
Many thanks, I've been looking for "what jobs are on a cruise ship" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Jiyrianna Peyadelyn Plan - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my mate got cool results with it.

Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my work buddy got amazing success with it.
Just wonderful, I've been looking for "finding the best cruise ship jobs" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Jiyrianna Peyadelyn Plan - (search on google ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my buddy got cool success with it.
I just got hired with American cruise line & I’m going away for 4 months & tbh I don’t care if I don’t talk to my family or friends cause their judgemental & there not the people to go to for life advice cause they don’t see life like I do
+Abigail Polo Ah Congratulations!!! What will you be doing onboard? I am excited to hear! You must keep me posted to see how everything is going! :) Congrats!
HI thanks! im going on board the NCL SUN, as a waitress. Im very excited now. Hoping that everything works for me. Like NOT QUITING FIRST MONTH!!! will see ahahaha
Ha You can do it! As of this response, you are already on board. I would love if you let me know how its going! Hopefully you are enjoying it. Remember, its all what you make of it. If you ever want to talk or if you are having a rough time, let me know...hopefully I can shed some encouragement. :) All the best!
Hey! Great video very helpful. I will be graduating this coming march with a degree of Tourism Management, i'm really really crazy over getting a job in the cruise ship industry. I'm still searching for more information about it though just to be sure i'll get the job, WHATEVER IT TAKES :)
That's great! Yes continue to look for as much information as you can, although only so much research can prepare you for what you will experience. Its a very good start though. Do you know what kind of position you are looking to do? Or at least which department? Those are some good starting points. Also while the degree will help, it will be the experience that will help more (at the start) :)
Basically, this job is for those who simply like to work without any holiday. 10 hours a day to pass your life for the length of your contract, which is various depending on what department you're in & the country you're from. Asians = mostly 7-9 months + 2-4 months vacation, crew from other countries vary between 4-6 months + 1 month vacation). Time flies, you go home just to spend a bit of quality time with your family or just enjoy yourself in your home country & then you go back to the ship again. When the ship blows off the loud horn, that's it, you're gonna go at it again.
Ha! Daniel from the other sister. thats awesome. Its funny you should mention the movie boiler room, a good friend of mine (And member of one of my old Improv troupes) is actually in that movie and has a small speaking part.
I think tiredness is also a factor depending on what your job on the ship will be. I was told that not all employees do not enjoy the same benefits on the ship, and they are divided into crew members and staff members. Crew members are the on the bottom of the hierarchy; therefore, they do not eat the same food as the staff members, are not allowed to use any of the guests' facilities.
Certain cruise lines there is more of a divide between staff and crew for sure. Other cruise lines, more of a divide between Offices and the staff/crew. Just depends on the size of the overall crew and passengers.
great , I was interested if the kitchen mem2ers of a ship are suffering more than the people that work at a land2ased kitchens :) that was a really helpfull video
Thanks for not putting loud annoying music while you talking, thumbs up
Winner of a video, been searching for "work on a cruise ship summer" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Jiyrianna Peyadelyn Plan - (do a search on google )?
Ive heard some amazing things about it and my m8 got excellent success with it.
Been doing this for years, not going to lie, it's pretty awesome. If you're young and single, I highly recommend being a cruise ship musician.
John Gleason Thank you so much for the video and for all of these precious information that we can read in your comments! Wish you all the best!
Sanja Maric THANKS! I am glad i can be of some assistance!
Wow am here watching this 5 years later. Thanks 🙏 for all the information.
Glad it was helpful!
I learned more from you in 15 minutes then i learned on my own researching for hours. And you made it all very simple and left me with the simple things I know to look for. Well done video. Thank you for the video and info.
You are very welcome! I still encourage you to research as well! The more information the better! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your input!
Sounds exactly like my life in the Navy.
There are definitely similarities. Minus the guests. :)
Hi John I liked your video here it's my watsup number plz +923349070190 contact
Bro I'm from Pakistan but I keen interest for this job all i know how to apply for this job application plz plz
I know this comment is a year old but I saw a post from a guy called Dylan Ryan on facebook saying that they're hiring on Princess Cruises I have a few questions
1) How long would I be working there? I don't mind it being long but I'm just wondering
2) What's the pay like
3) Can I bring my laptop (that's all I use in my spare time)
4) Do you have options on what position you want (given that you're qualified of course)
5) I'm not from the US so what if an emergency happens and I urgently need to get home?
Yes , i also heard hiring jobs in process cruise. And send my cv also.
This is my Email: shaiksharoz@ gmail.com
I wanted to give a clear, clean cut opinion about my experience and make sure to let people know that it may not be all sunshine and rainbows....but its worth it.
already sounds 100 times better then working at walmart and being a truck driver ill have to research this more and try to land a job
+RioZLander I wish you luck! Its a wonderful experience and while it has its tough parts, its worth it. At least i personally think so.
"Land a job" pardon the pun.
I recently went off my depression and anxiety medication (with help from my doctor) and that was my only big concern. I really think I would love the job.
For me, i was too busy and then too tired for my anxiety to bother me as much as it did/does. So thats a positive note.
worked 3 years with princess as a videographer and i had an absolute blast
Glad to hear it!
Just got offered a job with NCL and am watching all these. Thanks for the info and helping me prepare for the experience.
Hope you enjoy it!
A wealth of information provided and so insightful, thank you
+theonethatflies you are welcome!
Thanks for watching and be on the lookout for some more info vids too!
Thanks so much John. I have found these to be enormously helpful. I like to be prepared. I am a retired teacher and am going through the process for possible hire with a major cruise line. I am only at the video stage so I think you helped me a lot to present some important points.
+Natalie Lartigue Glad it is all working out! I wish you the best of luck! Keep me posted if you wouldnt mind....I can see how you are doing!
I sure will. I am hoping to advance to the next stage of the hiring process. I truly believe that this would be a great second career for me. I will keep you posted
Your video was above most that I've seen concerning ship life. Thanks for being thorough and concise.
2:45 - I recommend people get an unlocked international phone with an prepaid sim card with TING for american phone calls
2020 and i think it still get that point to work onboard. Thank You John
Awesome. Things will get back to normal soon!
Thank you for making this video:) Very helpful!
Great video with a lot of info! Thank you so much!
Thank you very much for share this information. It's very helpful.
you are welcome!
1st time to run across a not annoying video about working on a cruise ship. Not annoying at all. And its 4 fcking am !! Love it dude, will watch all of them!
Sweet man! Glad you liked it! I am curious, what about the other videos are annoying? Just want to make sure I dont make that same mistake! ha ha
Thanks for this video, really helpful. my dad work's in royal Caribbean international, and its my child would dream to be like my dad but go there own my own. so thanks a lot.
+Vishal Solanki You are quite welcome!
Hey I,m doing hotel management ask your dad if he can help me to enter the cruise after I complete my degree.
Glad i can help!
You are awesome Man! Thank you for info.
Ahmad Naggayev Thanks man! Glad i could be of some service! More info to come soon!
I'll be working on a cruise ship in a couple of months and you're videos are really helping me with unanswered questions so thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
You're hilarious and really handsome! Information is extremely useful. Glad I've found your videos.
Thank you so much! I am glad you found them too! Hopefully it helps you get what you need.
Ananasti totally agreed this is extremely helpful. Thank you so much !
Yeah he's handsome, but he's kinda gay lol.
ha. That is funny.
Home is where the heart is!
This is fascinating stuff, im on episode 5
Wow my hobby is a sport activities ! On a ship ! for 6 months! Sounds like paradise to me
Homesick? Ain't no one home for me to miss that much.
Lacking communication from people at home? Barely talk to people anyway.
No problem.
My only issue is internet... Especially with needing my anime fix. o_o
There will be internet, its not free on the ship and its not fast. You would probably find some places in port that is faster...so Downloading things and bringing it with you would probably be better.
yeah, no anime it will be huge problem for me, that is the only thing keeping me alive
Same
same i love anime
Portable DVD player 🤔
Thanks for this! I am about to go to a Job fair, for NORWEIGAN. This helps so much, im also a comedian and Tshirt lover, so my instints tell me im on the right path!
Thats awesome! Good luck and enjoy the job fair!
sounds like a perfect job for an introvert :"D Great !
hAHA You do have some sence of humour ;))))
I've found the same like you do.
Vance Conner -- In regards to home sickness and not having easy contact with people from home; yeah. An introvert would have an easier time coping.
Remember; "introvert" =/= "shy/asocial/social anxiety/etc".
Probably the main thing that'd be annoying for an introvert is sharing a room for lower level workers.
yeah i thought that the same too..
Sounds like a good job for me
Yes.. You are really great open minded very humble, practical and didn't hide any aspects thats really happening in cruise ship to the workers. Thanks a lot my friend. Its so useful tips for everyone who really wants to ride on wide cruise ships to get a job. Cheers buddy.
1,000 Cool Points for you for the Legends of the Hidden Temple shirt.
Thanks! Its one of my favorite shirts!
Your video is great I like staying away from family for a long time this is the move I wanna make
What about having personal medication from my doctor how will I get it
You may have to arrange with a drug store in one of the ports to get it refilled.
Awesome! I would apply if i was you then!
I shall apply once I graduate, can't wait :)
@@JohnGleasonComedy awww u are too sweet!
I work far away from home since 2005 😅 now miles away from 2012 to present 🤭 and work almost every day

ruclips.net/video/LB2x8Co5LdE/видео.html
Thanks!
You would need to wait till you are at least 21 and have some sort of experience. but it would depend on the job you are looking to do.
Thanks for the reply! And do I have to be 21 to work aboard a U.S. based ship? I heard that there are some that allow it.
a majority of them require 21 and older.
+Corn Fed im looking to be a croupier on a ship (i already work in a casino as one) what hours are the casino open and when 1 cruize ship finished as in the equivalent of a flight finishes what so you do? do you get 1 or 2 days off or is it straight to another one?
hey bro, a question, what about the privacy, do you have to share the room with other people? o you have your own mini room?
Depending on your position. You will have to share a room with people a majority of the time. When you work your way up, you may have the ability to have room to your self.
John Gleason , thanks so much for the helpful info
Generally officers will have their own cabins, ratings have to share.
This is a very useful video, thanks.
I am going to start working in Carnival very soon.
I hope you enjoy it!

i study cruise shipping and marine tourism which job is perfect for me on a cruise ship ?
Daniel Lawes John Gleason
Daniel Lawes Hello Daniel, So with those subjects you studied, what did it entail? Can you provide a little bit more info so I could narrow it down a bit. There are so many different jobs on board a ship. Remember, its like a floating City. Let me know and I will be happy to help!
great truthful intro to help some be honest and ideas on what to bring helped me a lot in planning

Is there a way for cruise employees to workout?
Also wondering this
Yes, there is a gym for crew members only, so you can workout in your free time
There are crew gyms and if you are on a front-facing position like maybe a bartender or an entertainer, you can use the guest gym when it isn't too busy
Just curious.
hi I want to work as a cruise line photographer can you pleas help me.

John Gleason. hi i want to work. its my first. time
Sandeep Siddoju check with www.airbornerecruiting.com/#
Thanks I am almost 65 and thought about working on a cruise ship. I am an Electrician . After watching your video I am still interested.
Like you come down with something that lasts a couple weeks and really knocks you down, do they expect you to still work or do you get some kind of sick time to recover for those cases?
edit - Just watched your video on this topic so no need anymore :p, thanks for the videos.
ha ha no worries!
gyloir o
this video is full of sense...
thanks bro. thumbs up!!
Fired?
Then your schooling should include child care and things along those lines.
where can i sign up?or apply?
Hey! thanks for watching. If you check out video number 2, it has some instructions on the application process.

did you answer any of the questions for yourself? Or just copy them down?
Hi man
I am about to go and work on a Royal Caribbean Ship in California.
I live in East EU so I will have to fly all the way to California
I just want to know, this working ever day thing, sound horrible, is it really that way? no human can do that without passing out.
As for pay, being from the east EU you will probably set up some sort of crew card or crew account (which works like direct deposit.)
When i first started they paid your bonuses in cash and that was nice....until you had to go back home and fill out a customs form.
John Gleason i need any contanct with you
Can i ?
I like the blue Barracuda shirt. Awesome. you are a legend.
Thank you!
will i be able to workout onboard?
Yes. There is a Crew Gym that you will be able to use in your down time.
thank you for the response !
Thats one of my priorities as well.
+John Gleason When working out your diet has to be in check. Is there any way to get more than 3 meals a day? And how healthy is the food usually?
will i be able to swim and workout at the pool apart from working out?
Which cruise ship do work at? And what job do you do?
This video is very helpful thank you
+Theng Hew Thank you!
Loving that Blue Baracuda shirt.
Thanks!!!!!
this is so true..NO DAYS OFF..only 7-8 hours break..
Yep.
It's crazy.
Sir thank you for this info..iam now applying for therapist in cruise ship ..
First word came up in my mind: PRISON
I am sorry to hear that. Yes there are rules and you will work hard....but you travel for free and get to meet people from all around the world. Its not for everyone. But if you are up for the challenge....then its worth it.
Lol
Can I carry on my guitar?
Lots of work low wages seeing these video pop up can get anyone .
When you break it down, yes the wages are low. However, there are aspects that balance it out. It is not for everyone. If you want to get into it for the money, its not the career for you. Its all about Travel and Hospitality.
It is prison my friend but best experiance from Carnival ,Norwegina sucks
Yes, to some they believe it is like prison. I can see that.
when i grow up i want to work on the sea,i love the sea cruises are sooo fun
Join the Navy
Jesus Soto I see what you did there m8 😂
semen, duty😂
I laugh all the time.
hahaaha funny but one question in this regard, where to find a hookup on board?
Many thanks, I've been looking for "what jobs are on a cruise ship" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Jiyrianna Peyadelyn Plan - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my mate got cool results with it.

I just got hired with American cruise line & I’m going away for 4 months & tbh I don’t care if I don’t talk to my family or friends cause their judgemental & there not the people to go to for life advice cause they don’t see life like I do
Thats kinda why Im looking into this lol, to get away from the fam & hopefully gain enough money to start my independent life
your video was the first i saw when i was triying to aplly for a cruise ship. Really helpfull.
going on board december 5!!
I`m scared!
Thanks!!
:) All the best!
this work is best suited for me i think. rather than being a doctor that will make my hair white
Everything is true whatever you said ..I been into cruise ship for 3 years.. and it's been a hell over there. .no life
I love this.. you are really funny.. I thank you for giving me all the information I need
When the ship blows off the loud horn, that's it, you're gonna go at it again.
pretty much. Although the amount of contracts is more based on cruise line and not the country of origin. Its also depending on your actual job.
Wow!! man 👍
I am glad that I landed on your videos
Very informative excellent job & thanks for sharing this information.
You are welcome!
BTW You could get free dinners by telling people you were in the movie "Boiler Room". Thanks for your excellent list and advice.
The Movie Boiler room?
Ha! Daniel from the other sister. thats awesome. Its funny you should mention the movie boiler room, a good friend of mine (And member of one of my old Improv troupes) is actually in that movie and has a small speaking part.
John, thanks so much for the comprehensive overview. Great insight! CHEERS
incredible insight. Thanks Ralph.
Unless for the fact to work with no day off. All the other questions depend of the company and the position you work onboard.
great , I was interested if the kitchen mem2ers of a ship are suffering more than the people that work at a land2ased kitchens :)
that was a really helpfull video
Thank you so much! I needed it a video like this! It had helped me to understand what my life will be for the next months!!
Your video really motivated me and I find it really helpful. Thank you so much.
You are welcome!
Will the crew be served healthy foods like oatmeal, vegetables, meat, cottage cheese, chicken, rice etc.?
yes. they have a pretty balanced food selection. Just gets old after a while.
