Not Genie. It was based on Mark Handley's play, "Idioglossia". In the 1970s, Handley and his wife had lived in a cabin like Nell's, but in the Cascade Mountains. He felt badly because he had such a hard time adapting and finally could not live that way, so he imagined Nell, who had no problems with it. The language, based on Nell's mother's aphasia and the twin speech she invented with her sister, was inspired by Grace and Virginia Kennedy, "Poto and Cabengo", who were front page news in the late '70s for having a twin language that turned out to be more of an English-German creole.

Actually her mom is not "handicapted." She has aphasia from a stroke and that's what Nell and her sister developed as a language.
