Best way to keep the grass healthy during hotter months, IMHO, is to let it grow! I put my mower at highest cut setting and let tall coverage retain moisture.
💡
Agree 100%! I increase the height of cut of my KBG from 2 1/2” to 3 1/2” from mid July to near end of August. As an added bonus (to reducing heat stress against your lawn) is that the increased grass height further assists in preventing weeds from establishing in the lawn.
True but too high then it traps moisture and trapped moisture = fungus
@@TheKingOfInappropriateComments I would agree with you if the grass is maintained longer during a rainy period when temps and humidity are excessive. But I believe the context of this review was that he is going through a long period of drought (ie. no moisture to speak of) with continued high temps and he’s trying to mitigate moisture loss through transpiration….
@@garage-guy207 It's a drought with high humidity.
I'll have to try and remember this for next season. My relatively tiny lawn was devastated early on this year.
man your delivery is near perfect! Informative, easy to follow, zero fluff, and the entire video had value for the viewer. Awesome.
This is where I come to make sure my lawn thrives. Appreciate you Crimble 👌🏻💯
I have 1000 beach umbrellas that I use to shade my lawn when it's really hot, but I'll give this a try. Thank you.
😂
Brudda, I've been watching this channel from like 6k subscribers, the effort and production quality has consistently got better, hats off to you sir! Can't wait for the 1 million day and absolutely love the progress.
I really appreciate you coming along with me!
Your lawn and property has come a long way since you moved into your new home.👍
I like how your videos are short and to the point.
I live by your word fella keep it going
So glad the videos have been helpful. Thank you
I think my target areas are already beyond help for this season but will certainly be prepared next year.
I live in the Southwestern US desert on sandy soil. Last year I lost nearly every plant, even with the added expense of extra water. This year, I'm keeping trees alive and have green grass around the trees, I won't try more until I have more trees established for shade. This looks like it would be very helpful.
Thank you.
2k sq ft thats 👍 i was expecting less than 900- Thanks for sharing with us 🙏 God Bless
It’s too late for mine. Half of the lawn has gone dormant. Had I not put down the hydretain, it may have gone into full dormancy.
I’m going to keep this in mind for next Spring. It seems like it will only get hotter ea year.
For now, I’ll water as needed. Man, I can’t wait to dethatch, aerate & overseed this fall.
I second this. Living in Germany and I use Envii Seafeed Xtra from the UK on all my plants. Great stuff, but smells like...well...seaweed.
Like a lot of things the US is very slow to catch up on this. I have seen some of the mixes you guys have and I am clueless as to why we don't get them here. Glad to hear you are having great luck with these.
Great video, I like to put some liquid iron in the mix to help with keeping the lawn green.
Use it once a month regularly, works as u described
Thanks. I'm ordering those products right now. I've been watering like crazy and it's just barely hanging on. By the way, you must be a drummer 😂
I thought you were saying "Seek Help" ☺️
I may have been just depends on the day. I was probably calling 911 during the Crowdstrike tech disaster
That was very clever.
Leaf pores naturally close in the heat of the day. You don't need to shock them.
Maybe it helps to shock the leaves if you are on sand that has no organic material instead of soil, but after a few years your grass will build organic material in the soil unless you keep burning it out with nitrogen.
If you are on clay that sheds water, it is critical to aerate and incorporate more organic material into the soil. You also need earthworms.
But for grass, the first and foremost important thing is to WATER LESS OFTEN. Grass roots will go deep to get water, but if you water every day the roots have to stay on the surface to breath. Water once a week or at most twice - the second time only if you notice the color of the grass changing darker in the more sensitive areas. You'll need to work up to that if your grass is used to frequent water, by watering longer and gradually extending the days between watering, preferably starting in the fall. This allows the time for the grass roots to grow deeper before facing the heat of the summer. Use a shovel to open the soil and check how deep the roots and water are penetrating.
When I moved in the people before me would water each zone for 15 minutes every day and that first summer I could not keep the grass green no matter how much I watered. I measured the water output, and it takes these rotors an hour to put down 1/4in of water. The grass roots were only going about 2in down. Now I water each zone for 4.5 hours once per week during the hottest part of the year and because the roots now go down 14in to 16in the grass stays green during weeks over 100F and humidity under 20% at 10pm. (about 3 hours once per week during most of the year and about 2 hours spring and fall)
I could not afford your water bill wow
@@chadderstar6880 That's how much water grass requires - about 1in per week in normal weather. He even mentions that in the video.
The b vitamins are very good for stress responses in all plants the kelp has dozens of micronutrients and plant hormones plus organic matter
i keep my lawn at 4" inchs in UK summer' it self waters - it is own Air well (condenser) Atmospheric water generator So it can pull water out the air in the by its self (morning DEW Points) only works if you have longer grass
You always provide interesting videos with great tips. I was interested to know how you came up with the quantity of sea kelp per gallon. The manufacturer seems to recommend 1 or 2 ounces per gallon. I've been using Sea K, and I truly believe sea kelp really saved my lawn in this heat. I just purchased super thrive to add to it in hopes of even more heat protection.
Many thanks for your informative videos!
I use the fish and kelp version also from GS and added molasses.
That stuff is great too. I like that these guys offer big sizes for reasonable prices. If you look at other companies selling "kelp" mixes they have about 2 drops of kelp in them and all water. I like doing it myself and you get a lot for your money. Glad to hear the other mixes are working well for you
Any particular reason you use 8oz per gal. and the bottle of Kelp says to use 1 to 2oz per gal? Not arguing just trying to learn something.... Great videos....
Yes, the directions are for a root application which is typically on a very small area. That one cup in a gallon ios being sprayed over a lot of area and in my experience you need more applied to be effective. You can experiment but its really not something you can overapply as long as you use it within reason
is there a reason you don't use Humic acid any more?
I have some areas already dormant - still worth applying this mixture?
Do you use other stuff like surfactants or humic acid?
What about iron or micro nutrients?
For those of us using hose end sprayers like an ortho, what would you suggest the setting for ounces per gallon be on the sprayer? Thank you. Good video.
Another good video. Question...have ever used hydrating on your lawn. Do yu recommend
I haven't yet, but I have been watching products like Hydretain amzn.to/3WuTHbd where people are reporting good results. I will definitely keep this on the list try try & share
How fast do you see the results of this mix? Wish I found this about three months ago. Summer heat in So Cal always beats up the tall fescue lawn. Thanks for the great content.
Chris, your content is just fabulous and I’m always amazed at what I’m going to learn. Thank you!
It looks like a good product, however, you were applying it to a very shady area of your lawn. I would like to have seen you apply it to a totally sunny area and then see the results later.
Wish I had this video 2 months ago before temps got scorching.
Been following your lawn advice videos since the beginning including the original one for which this is an update. I'm curious as to why you're no longer recommending humic acid? Did you find that it wasn't effective?
Thank you, I never had any issues from it but back 5 years ago, Humics properties were highly overstated at least based on additional research. I stopped using it 2 years ago and have seen no negative effects so based on the updated info and my tests I dont think it offers enough benefit to keep it there.
@@SilverCymbal Thanks, and good to know that humic is of marginal value. By the way and notwithstanding that, I've been using your recipe for the past couple of years here in New Jersey, where heat waves appear to be the new normal (I think we should starting calling summer temps below 90 degrees cold spells). The lawn has basically remained green with watering 1-2X a week max.
Can you use this mixture on plants and flower beds?
Thanks
Yes, you can and its very beneficial for them as well. Much of Sea Kelp has been tested but a lot of it is still not known why it does so well for plants grown on land. It's also had a surge surge on using it for Cannbis growers too. One of the few products thats affordable and works naturally in a lot of good ways.
@@SilverCymbal Many thanks 👍🏻
Another great video! Was that a Tempest weather system in the background at the end of the video? If so, how do you like it? I have the Rachio controller and was considering adding it for more accurate rainfall tracking.
Thanks for this. I followed the other recipe with Humic acid. What happened?
In Sacramento we've been having 105+ off and on for the last 3 weeks. Got rid of my grass years ago. Have a rock garden with lots of shrubs. Will this mixture help shrubs, plants, stuff other than grass?
great tip! don't forget to add Yucca or Baby Shampoo to help break the surface tension so it sticks to the grass blades
just buy the cheapest yellow dish soap you can find and add it to your hose end sprayer and do that two or three times per season.
You don't need all that. Just water deeply but infrequently. A healthy lawn only needs about an inch of water a week to survive.
Let the grass grow taller, especially fescues. Thick dense grass does a great job keeping the weed's out of the lawn. And the taller grass blades, help shade the roots and keep moisture in.
I just stopped mowing for 3 weeks and watered for just 1 hour late at night (10-11). My lawn is doing just dandy.
Do not water at night. This builds up moisture in the grass and causes more fungus build up. Water early in the mornings before sunrise. Never water at night.
I assume that one can make this sea kelp liquid? I am in Fort Myers and there is plenty of sea kelp around.
Amazing video on RUclips and 😊👍
Thank you very much!
@@SilverCymbal your welcome 😊👍
Why did you drop the humic acid from your recipe?
As time when on more research and info came out sharing that humic might not offer much benefit for this application. I then tried it for 2 seasons myself and saw no bad effects. So now it costs less and still offers the good parts
Gs plant food sea kelp can use on warm season lawn? And does need water in after application? Thanks
How often should one apply to the lawn?
30 days he said
It has been about five days since i put tenasity down, i don't see any difference. Should i spray the weeds once again?
Definitely think that 1 teaspoon of super thrive is not doing anything at that point.
It would have to some of the most concentrated formula ever
The label says use 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water when applying to plants, so I think 1 full teaspoon makes sense for lawns?
No issues applying this in very high temps? Products like liquid iron for example to help keep grass green can't be applied I believe with temps in the 90's.
Sea Kelp is a legitimate lawn/garden supplement. Superthrive however, is complete BS. Do not waste your time or money. Additionally, the instructions state to add to the soil, not foliage
I have no connection to them, so do whatever you want. But this is from them: SuperThrive is a plant vitamin solution that *can be used as a foliar spray on leaves* to help plants absorb nutrients quickly, especially when stressed. The dosage depends on the application method, but for a foliar spray, you can use 15 milliliters of SuperThrive per 10 liters of water. You can apply the spray to both sides of the leaves for maximum absorption
Is a surfactant needed?
No, this is not oily at all, and if you spray on dry, even warm grass it will have no problem sticking on its own. I think its best to skip any surfactant here as you don't want any interference with product being taken in
We’ve also had 3 weeks of 90° heat. Is evaporation of this application any concern? It’s a foliar uptake not a root uptake correct?
Correct, applied as a foliar application yields the most benefit, some studies have shown that Kelp added to the soil can be as low as 10% as effective, so definitely stick with the spray
@@SilverCymbal thank you for your quick reply. 👍🇨🇦
How often do you apply sea kelp?
Durign the hotter months, for New Engand usually Jul - Aug - Sept
@SilverCymbal thanks for sharing all this information
How long have you had this sprayer? Never heard of the brand. Not being disrespectful but wondering how much you get for recommending this battery sprayer.😊
I have no connection to this sprayer company. I bought it, but its a common model sold under a few names. I make a small commission from Amazon if you order through my link amzn.to/3xVRNah but its the same, regardless of what model I reccomend. Ive been using it for about a year and output is fantastic. Buy one if you are curious from Amazon and return it if you don't love it. For the $200 its the best one I have tried yet and the battery lasts forever
Can you use a hose end sprayer?
Yes you can, it uses quite a bit more product but if the lawn isn't too big that can be a easy way to do it. amzn.to/4cMUIkx This has adjustments that mix the right rate.
@@SilverCymbal Thx a lot! Awesome channel btw. Have learned many things from watching you over the years.
Sounds great. Would anyone know where I can get a gallon of the sea kelp from?
Yes, this is what I use: amzn.to/4bUkFxw
Just received my Alientabi backpack sprayer. When charging the battery, it is indicating red on the charger. Does it stay red until it fully charges and then turns green? Or is this indicating something else?
Sorry, figured it out. Light stays red until the battery is fully charged and then it turns green. Apparently, they need to update the product manual.
Would have been a great video for me about 4 weeks ago
Cut grass high and that helps as well
How does that sea kelp smell? 😅
In the bottle, its stinky, on the lawn you don't smell anything. You can see the light brown color in the stream but its not visually noticeable and no weird smells. I also can attest that I have every animal in the world here thats visits the lawn and have not seen any curiosity after
What grass seed are you using? Still Black beauty?
Did you review the battery sprayer? Thanks.
I haven't yet but I have been using it since last year and its incredible especially at the price amzn.to/3xVRNah One nozzle can spray giant areas the other can do light weed control. So far, so *very* good with it.
@SilverCymbal The label says use 1-2 oz per gallon of water. Why do you recommend 8 oz?
That amount of for a root application spread over a very small area. You are misting much less on the lawn for the amount of area covered. You can adjust it as you see fit but the lower amount won't be enough in my experience.
What do tou think of this sprayer compared to flow zones typhoon. I am still looking for the better electric 4 gallon backpack sprayer.
From what I can tell the one I used: amzn.to/3xVRNah is the same as the typhoon for 30% less. I researched it more and it appears just to be an import sprayer different companies relabel. For the price the linked one is insanely good. Great and light spray and one of the few that can blast a lot, great for 30 second cleaner and other high volume applications
I have the Alientabi 4g self cleaning model and it allows me to put down 1 gallon per 1K walking full speed like 4 mph. Works great!
1:42 Is that why you moved way up into the hills? lollll
No, here in NH its still illegal. Mass legalized it I think 3 years ago
I have no backpack sprayers, can it be applied via hose end sprayer?
Yes. Add a little bit of baby shampoo or basic dish soap to help it stick to the lawn. Aim you sprayer high so that it lands light and misty.
I'm not far from you and my entire lawn is burned. Good news is that maybe next year we won't have the same heat-wave we've had this year, and the lawn will come back.
Does sea kelp need water it in after application?
No. It's like iron, you want it to absorb into the grass blades. Do not apply if rain is expected within 24 hrs.
I like all your lahn stuff. Oh, sorry. LAWN stuff. :)
I cut my grass around 4” and it stays green all year long
No humic acid this time
People have been telling me to sea kelp for years
92degrees that’s cute…..
Wouldn't the Sea Kelp contain sea salt? Salt being a vegetation killing ingredient?
Is this a serious question? If salt was in the sea kelp, it would kill the kelp. There’s all sorts of vegetation that grows in salt water. They adapt to not absorb the salt.
@0:48 everything reminds me of her
😂😂
You really are a funny guy. Not funny ha ha, but funny different. You present your show like you’re an average guy but you’re not. I bet you work at a prestigious golf course as their $200k a year grounds man. You seem to know everything about grass!! Keep it coming!
Can I add these both at the same time into a 4gal. sprayer?
