Thanks for this great guide!! Just started playing week ago and the commands during battle were annoying to control. Especially when it would select all troops during battle. Now with this guide I’ll be able to better control my suicidal troops during a siege or an open field battle. 😅
haha No problem! It took me a long time to figure out how to not issue commands to every formation at once as well! So ridiculous how the game doesn't give you any sort of tutorial or anything! Thanks for watching and good luck out on the battlefield!
Thank you so very much! I got bannerlord for my console yesterday, and the custom battle was a disaster. I was wondering why all of my units were charging even when I hovered over just cav or infan. And I thought that the commands without a shortcut were simply not unlocked. I've saved this, thank you again!
I just started like a month ago and I have no idea how to do this stuff. Everyone I asked said just play and you will understand but this helped so much thank you
I did the just play and try to understand and it was weeks of trying out every button and googling without really any good results then browsing through reddit to finally mange to get a grasp on everything that you can do. It's so stupid that there isn't any console button tutorial/guide whatever out there. I honestly still can't believe it. I'm glad that you were able to find this and have it be of some use! There's much more depth to it than I'm sure many ever realize! I just charged my whole army almost every battle for the longest time at first lol! Not being able to figure out how to simply single out 1 formation made me too frustrated to bother with any strategies.
@@RoboCharged lol Ive been doing the same thing this entire time, everyone charges at once, couldn't figure it out. I just hoped I was able to kill enough dudes to make up for my lack of tactics. Tried some of the hints in the video earlier, will take a while to get the hang of them, but dam they help!
Thanks for the video. It helped a lot. I've a question; I have 40 infantry troops with 4 lines (each line has 10 troops). Before battle, I can change number of lines. For example, convert them to 2 long lines (each line has 20 troops). But, while I am controlling my main hero during the battle, I cant change their line up. Sometimes, I mistakenly change them while I'm giving orders to them. What is the right button combination? I've xbox controller.
Glad it helped! Yeah pre-battle deployment is definitely the easiest time to separate/group troops into different formations. But it can still be done during battle from the transfer menu. I'll try and list all the xbox button steps for your example starting with 4 formations of 10 infantry that you want to change into 2 formations of 20. Step 1 First hold LB and then hit down on the dpad twice over one of the 4 formations to select it. Step 2 Then still holding LB press B to bring up the toggle options radial menu. Use the right stick to point at transfer and then RT to select it and bring up the transfer menu. Step 3 From here let go of the LB so that you don't give orders in the background by mistake and since it's not needed here. Now the formation you selected will be outlined in yellow. Choose one of your other 3 formations and hit A on it and it will be outlined in blue as the formation to transfer units too. Put the slider at the bottom to 10 if it isn't already and then press X to accept. That should leave you with 1 formation of 20 infantry units and 2 with 10. Just repeat those steps once more to turn the other 2 formations of 10 into 1 of 20 and you'll have 2 formations of 20. Hopefully that answers your question?

Great video, thanks for the detail. I’ve noticed on a lot of pc videos that they can drag the troops formations during the battle to make their formation line longer or shorter and facing different directions. Every time I try to do this during a battle using the same mechanics as the pre battle screen I can only place them. Is this a unique thing for pc or is there a way I can drag my formations to different lengths?
Thanks for watching! Weird that doesn't seem to be working for you. I'm able to do all that on Xbox so it definitely isn't a PC thing only. With the formation you want selected and holding LB/L1 before then pressing and holding RT/R2, you should be able to mess around with the green flags with the right stick before letting go of the RT/R2 to finally issue the order for them to go where the flags are. Additionally the face enemy option in the toggle radial menu also changes to face direction as well after choosing it so you can alternate between having them face the enemy or face a given direction based on where you have the flag aimed with the right stick. Hopefully that helps, I can't really think of what the issue might be. I've been asked this once before on this video so I might make a YT short soon showing it and add it to my playlist of console Bannerlord videos.
This guide is so far one of the more detailed, you still missed a couple things in comparison from the "army preparation menu" to the "in battle menu" on how to make troops shift shapes of the formations (example: make shieldwall thinner but while In battle) this is one thing I really can't figure out, I've played a lot and i know pretty much everything now, but this is that one derail I'm still looking for... I should have bought it on steam damn it
You're right I did miss that and later when asked about it I went and figured it out. Sorry about that! I added a YT short to the end of my Bannerlord playlist showing how to stretch/shrink and wheel your battlelines during battle. Check it out hopefully that can help! Edit...I bought it on xbox and thankfully it also lets me play it on PC but not for PS owners Im guessing.
The total limit on console is 1,000 troops at one time in a battle. Any extras will be brought in after as reinforcements. So for pre-deployment it depends on the size of the opposing army. For instance if they have 100 you can only have 900 max. If they have 500 you can only have 500 as well. Edit: I should add you also need to have your Graphics Mode set to Fidelity rather than Performance to reach that battle limit of 1,000 troops. To do that go into Options and then you'll see it under Video settings. It will run the game at 30 frames per second instead of 60 like Performance mode does, but Performance only allows 500 total troops in battle. I personally prefer to use Fidelity and don't find the FPS drop that noticeable and think it's worth the tradeoff for double the active troops.
I'm not too sure, the formations can be a little glitchy sometimes. At least with line formation you should be able to correct it manually if need be by holding the RT or R2 and then moving the right stick to adjust the green flags how you want before letting go to get them into a proper line.
Hold LB/L1 and then aim the flag at the gate using the right stick. You should see a broken gear icon when you are on it. Then press RT/R2 to send them there. The siege pathfinding AI is just kind of broken in general I find but that's the best way I've found to do it.
While I am besieging the castle, although I have an army of 1000 people, at most 100 of my men come with me. How can I solve this problem? Please help me and I am playing on PS4.
Unfortunately that is likely just due to the limitations of last gen consoles. I haven't tried playing on an Xbox One or PS4 but just did a quick search and read that the battle size limit is only 250 units in total for sieges and 350 for field battles. So for a siege you are likely only getting around 100 men at a time because of the enemies troops counting as well. So you each can only have roughly that number before the battle limit is capped out. You should reap the benefits of a larger army by getting more reinforcements however but they just can't all be on screen at once. On PS5 and Xbox Series X the battle limit is 500 troops at 60 FPS or 1000 at 30 FPS depending on how you have your graphic settings.
Plug in a key board and mouse you’ll thank me later. You can switch between either or so you can use the key board and mouse to give orders and controller for the combat, or just stick to KBM
I still don't understand how to make your Soldiers face different directions or wheel around like PC apparently can. Anyone know how to do that on console? I want to put infantry and cavalry next to each other in V formations to take advantage of terrain
When you bring up the toggle options with B on Xbox or Circle on PS the face enemy option toggles to face direction as well. So if you aim your flag to the left or right of your selected formation and select face direction it should rotate the formation. The soldiers within the formation still look towards the enemies direction though.
@@marshallthornhill587 No problem thank you because I legit didn't know this and your comment got me to look into it haha. I always missed that too, but if you select face enemy and then bring it up again it should now say face direction. It toggles between the two options every time you select it.
Hmm I'm not sure what you mean by advanced charge. Are you maybe asking about when I delegated command of the army to the AI? That was done by holding LB and then pressing B and then Y. If so they only instantly charged since for the demonstration I had a much bigger army than the enemy so I wouldn't get attacked while showing things. However the AI instantly saw that advantage and charged them when briefly in command. Hope that helps?
I actually might of just realized what you are talking about? I think on PC there is an advance command, on console there seems to be only Charge or Engage. Even though choosing charge can get your character to yell advance. So Engage might be the one you are asking about? It is found in the movement menu and is just a way to make your army advance in a more orderly manner than an all out charge. They will go a little slower and look to stay in formation.
The ONLY thing i can't find anywhere is how to use captain mode. We have an achievement for killing 10.000 troops with your troops while in captain mode, but I cant figure out how to use it. Help?
Captain mode is an online multiplayer game mode. Unfortunately it's kind of always been pretty dead and I've never even managed to try it before in the few times I tried to get a match before giving up. Maybe it's better now since it's been awhile since I've bothered but I'd be surprised.
If you hold left on the d-pad it will slightly lower and zoom out the camera. And you can then still rotate it with the right stick. I'm not sure if that is what you are asking? This can be good for lining up sword swings on horseback, but it's the only camera controls I'm aware of in battle.
Agreed! One thing my video didn't show well was that the AI actually often does a pretty decent/interesting job. Here I made sure my army outnumbered the enemy heavily so that I wouldn't get attacked by them as I was demonstrating things. That caused my army to instantly all charge when I delegated command since they wanted to press the advantage. But usually they take a more deliberate approach and I've even seen them do things like have the archers inside of a infantry circle with cavalry flanking both sides.
Hi guys, someone know how to have no limitation troops in battle? I have a 500 warriors party but they only appears half in battle. You know how to adjust it in ps5? I think there is a 1000 troops limitation. Thanks
Just go into your options and then under video youll see graphic settings. If you change it from performance to fidelity youll get the 1000 troop limit instead of 500 for battles. The game will run at 30 fps instead of 60 though.
hmm...Unfortunately I'm not sure what could cause that. I've never played on PS or even Xbox One. But on Xbox Series X like in the video at least for me, as long as your holding LB or in your case L1 and using the right stick to aim at a red enemy formation icon it should just be automatic. That was a new feature from a later patch, so if I had to venture a guess I'd say maybe it isn't properly implemented for last gen systems? Wish I could offer more help!
@@ObjectiveMedia haha yeah it definitely deals much more damage! Couching your lance basically involves building up speed and bracing your spear under your arm to be able to just run right through enemies you line up instead of trying to time a spear thrust at them. I later made another video that demonstrates that and also how to spear brace while dismounted.
@@nunsepodi3676 Yes RT or R2 moves the units to where your flag is pointed. But if you have a radial menu up and are aiming at an option on it by holding the right stick RT or R2 can be used to select that option as well.
@@RoboCharged yeah I know but even with the radial menu up, most of the times it just moves my troops (sometimes it actually works). Is there a way to relocate the controller settings? ty
@@nunsepodi3676 Hmm...unfortunately there isn't any way at least that I know of to remap the controller settings on console. Weird it's not working for you most times, I haven't had that happen really. The only thing that I can think of that might help is to really focus on making sure you are still holding down the right stick while pointing at an option until after letting go of the RT. When I do it at 3:25 of the video you can see the camera move after since I'm still holding the right stick for a second. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
When holding down LB/L1 to give orders if you move the flag with the right stick over a siege engine it will turn into a blue gear icon. Then hit RT/R2 to have the selected formation go to it. It's kind bugged I think however. It doesn't seem to work in pre-deployment, and during battle non archers on the walls should automatically man them but obviously don't always do so.
@@RoboCharged Thanks a lot. It surely is a bug I tried it eveytime and no one goes there, but yeah after pre deployment 2 guys would run off to the siege machine. It kinda sucked since there's the walking time. But again, thanks and that response was quick :) appreciated it
@@jovyrivera7055 No problem, I wish they would continue to update and fix bugs in the game but it's been awhile now so I'm not too optimistic. A possible work around you could try is to create a new small 2 man or so infantry formation in pre-deployment and then place them right beside the siege machine. Then right when the battle starts put them on it and they'll be close to get to it right away.
If you don't play bannerlord on PC you miss the best parts of the game! You won't be able to play all the wonderful modds in single player and you can't join the big online events. So you will miss all the good stuff in the game so.... Why? PC Master rase!

While I am besieging the castle, although I have an army of 1000 people, at most 100 of my men come with me. How can I solve this problem? Please help me and I am playing on PS4.

@RoboCharged thank you!! I've just never seen the option other than face enemy. I'll try it out tho! Maybe I just keep missing it for some reason
@@marshallthornhill587 No problem thank you because I legit didn't know this and your comment got me to look into it haha. I always missed that too, but if you select face enemy and then bring it up again it should now say face direction. It toggles between the two options every time you select it.
I play on mouse on keyboard on the ps4 but if i get tired i can use this thanks
I’m assuming we can’t give orders like sending troops to “skirmish” or “flank” but I see the AI give orders like this. Is this true?
Yes unfortunately it seems that the AI has access to some commands that don't appear anywhere in the menus for the Human players.
What about the advanced charge ? I mean that one with two arows you aktivated it with Y
@@RoboCharged yes i talked about that command, thank you! Now i understand
@@RoboCharged ahhhhhh that explains it lol THNX!
U know how to change the amount of ranks a group has?
How do you open use the combat camera in battle?
If you hold left on the d-pad it will slightly lower and zoom out the camera. And you can then still rotate it with the right stick. I'm not sure if that is what you are asking? This can be good for lining up sword swings on horseback, but it's the only camera controls I'm aware of in battle.
Commands army to charge.
Archers on a hill get slaughter before my infantry even get close 😐
Personally I think delegate command is great for frontline commanders
@@RoboCharged many thanks 🙏
I guess I'm just frustrated that we can't use an advance command like on PC to just have troops march
The Engage command will cause your troops to advance while maintaining their formation.
I sometimes see the green target lock but most the time it doesn’t come up on ps4 it’s really frustrating any help would be great
hmm...Unfortunately I'm not sure what could cause that.
How he attacked the guard with a spear on ps?
Can you let ai lead just 1 formation?
Yes! Only the formation or formations you have currently highlighted will apply when you select delegate command.
How do i spare brace on ps4 ?
R1 is used for spear brace and also for couch lance as well.
@@RoboCharged wait, couch lance is a special attack?! I thought that just meant it could be used on horseback! 😅
Mannnn, life saver
What about the commands that dont have a button next to them llike retreat
For those aim towards the one you want with the right stick and press RT or R2.
@@RoboCharged it relocates them
@@nunsepodi3676 Yes RT or R2 moves the units to where your flag is pointed.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
i love you, platonically
What's the right trigger on ps
Sorry should of mentioned that in the vid. R2
@@RoboCharged is ok man thanks 😊
play on my ally and it works the same.
Someone help me assign people get jnto the freaking siege engines during defenseeee
P.s just subbed
Much appreciated glad to have you!
If you don't play bannerlord on PC you miss the best parts of the game!
You won't be able to play all the wonderful modds in single player and you can't join the big online events.
So you will miss all the good stuff in the game so.... Why?
PC Master rase!
Many people don't have a gaming PC or simply prefer to play games from the comfort of their couch instead of sitting at a desk.
1000+ hours and still leaning
Cough*** get a pc *choking*** sorry about that. Yeah yeah consoles are great 👍🏼
I'd always wanted a gaming PC and actually finally got one just a month before making this video and I'm loving it!
@@RoboCharged hell yeah! Welcome to the brotherhood! And welcome to the addiction 😂
@@Lancelot_2882 haha thanks!
impossible ppl like to play this come on console, haha that is horible mate
unless you play on console with mouse+keyboard
@@maxxgrumpy I finally got my first gaming PC not long before making this video. And Bannerlord is for sure much better played on that haha! Mainly because of mods. But when I didn't have a PC I was glad I was able to at least play on console. While not ideal with a little practice it's not that bad. The part that was the most frustrating was just finding out what the buttons were. There wasn't much at all in the way of guides or any sort of in game tutorial. So I thought I'd pass on what I learned during my time on console.
Absolutely disgusting seeing people play pc games on console. Thumbs down
you should try jumping bro
