Heated Driveway vs Historic Buffalo Lake Effect Snow Storm // November 17th-20th, 2022

  • In this video I demonstrate how my 1,600 sf ft heated driveway performed during the infamous November 2022 Lake Effect Snow Storm in Buffalo, NY. While I do not live in one of the hardest hit areas like Hamburg or Orchard Park where they received over 77" of snow, we did get our fair share during this 3-4 day event, totaling around 20".

I was late to get the system turned on the evening of Thursday Nov 17th, as I was cleaning up the garage after work to fit both cars. Almost minutes after I got both cars in the garage, the snow started and I turned the system on immediately. It was of course to late as it takes a few hours to bring the driveway up to temperature, but it caught up overnight once the snow stopped and was clear by morning.
We received additional snowfall Friday night and Saturday, and as you'll see in the video, the driveway performed as expected. It was of course temporarily overwhelmed during the heaviest lake effect snow bands, it caught up quickly once things lightened up, and I easily cleaned up the little bits remaining while I was out shoveling the sidewalk and apron.
I recorded a livestream on Saturday morning which you can watch here: • Buffalo Storm and Heat... and here: • Buffalo Storm and Heat...

The playlist will have all of my videos in the correct order form start to present, regardless of the date I uploaded them. It starts with how I designed the PEX and Snowmelt Loop Layout, shows the process of installing the actual heated concrete slab, demonstrates how I did the math to calculate the boiler and pump sizes, installation of all of the components, and ends with lots of time-lapse of the system melting snow. It also includes snowmelt system startup and shutdown videos, as well as walkthroughs of the mechanical room, continuous circulation design and electrical system.

The opening text is not on screen long enough. 99% of people are not speed readers. I isn't no dummie but cain't reeed that fast, nor can most people. Did you test the read time before uploading the video? Are you a speed reader and didn't take into consideration that most are not? Or did you just not care? Gotta be one of the three.

@@TomYnysMon Not that easy when video's in a queue playing in my TV and I have another app opened that I'm using. Also, you're sort of justifying a creator perhaps making text so tiny and on the screen for only one second that not only does the viewer have to pause the video but they need to order from Amazon a magnifying glass to read the tiny text. Right? The text is meant for the viewer to give into, it's not like it needs to be up there for an hour, just long enough for the average person to be able to read it. Seems polite to me. Although a person sure is free to take the dickhead approach and make them pause the video.

Back in the late 1960s, our local Chicago S&L had a heated sidewalk. What a luxury not to slide on ice in the winter! We were so proud of that wide stretch of cement, it even had glitter imbedded in the surface to add extra style. Our savings accounts had helped to pay for it, and we heartily approved, back when ordinary interest rates were 6.75 percent. Hard to imagine that kind of return now.

No disrespect to this guy but where he lives, they got nowhere near what we get in average snowfalls here in WNY. He got 20" over 3 or 4 days....that's only 5" to 7" per 24 hour period and this snow that fell for this event was extremely heavy wet snow, which melts much faster than the light fluffy stuff because the ground wasn't even frozen when the snow came down. Let's see a real test, where we (in Hamburg....just south of him) received 77" in 24 hours and 82" in two days.....lol.....I would also like to see how it would handle the snow left at the end of the driveway from the city plows, which was, in most cases (in heavy hit areas) greater than 6' high.....lol...Looking forward to see a video from when he actually gets hit with a real storm......lol....

I live on the North Shore of Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota, and I wonder how this system would hold up with the extended intense cold we can get here. I know Buffalo gets cold, too, but I wonder if your frost line is measured in feet like ours. Frost heaves are just a way of life here.

Before this project I also had serious problems with frost heave. The old concrete slab that was there had heaved over the years so that it was now pitched towards the house. Not good. The awesome thing with this setup I have noticed is that with the 2" foam board insulation under the entire slab, the frost can't really get deep enough below the driveway to heat it anymore. Add to that the fact that its occasionally heated, and the frost never has a chance to get close to heaving depth. The driveway was poured in 2019, and it hasn't moved an inch in 4 winter seasons. Thanks for watching!
