January 13th-15th, 2024 Snow Storm & Heated Driveway Time Lapse - Buffalo NY

- On Friday January 12th, 2024, the Buffalo, NY area prepped for its first large storm of the winter season. It started Friday with High Wind Warnings and 60+ MPH gusts. On Friday night at approx 9:33 PM the wind took a large branch from the maple tree in my front yard, which smashed through one of my Pella casement windows on the front of the house.
On Saturday January 13th, the snow started and by 5 PM had accumulated around 1". The driveway was activated at 5:37 PM.
The snow continued off and on as the lake effect snow band moved north and south across the area, with the areas south of the city being hit the hardest (not me).
The driveway ran for 48 hours and was eventually shut down on Monday January 15th at 5:41 PM when the driveway was dry and there was no threat of additional snow for 24+hrs.

If you’re new to my channel and want to follow this project from the beginning (in order, regardless of upload date), I highly recommend you visit my Heated Driveway / Snowmelt playlist which can be found here: • Heated Driveway / Snow...
The playlist will have all of my videos in the correct order form start to present, regardless of the date I uploaded them. It starts with how I designed the PEX and Snowmelt Loop Layout, shows the process of installing the actual heated concrete slab, demonstrates how I did the math to calculate the boiler and pump sizes, installation of all of the components, and ends with lots of time-lapse of the system melting snow. It also includes snowmelt system startup and shutdown videos, as well as walkthroughs of the mechanical room, continuous circulation design and electrical system.

Hey look who’s back. Wondering if you were doing videos this year 👍👍👍
Chris I live in West Seneca. Saturday we lost a 35 foot evergreen tree to the wind. It landed on the roof. We are unable to get it down until it is safe for someone to get up there. On top of that by Sunday afternoon we had 4 feet of snow. We had to pay someone $80 to clean the apron at the end of the driveway. The snowblower just couldn't do it. West Seneca ended up with 80.4 inches by Thursday. I am so jealous of your heated driveway. Nice job with that and it cost you less to run that, than I paid to have the apron plowed out. Love watching your videos.
Same weather in Metro Detroit this year. Thanks for the upload, and have a great 2024! (thank you Waypoint/Remap Radio for getting this into my subscriptions!)
Great video! We absolutely love the timelapse. Looking forward to seeing more now that the Buffalo snow season has finally arrived!
Thanks Gil! I went from having literally no snowmelt content to a backlog of 4+ events to edit in less than a week! 😂. That’s Buffalo! Thanks as always for your comments and support, really appreciate it!
Thanks for the video. That tree limb really had it out for your window, so many other ways it could have fallen!
Glad to see these videos again this year (although I’m not glad to see all the Buffalo snow again) 👍
Glad to be making them again! It has been an extremely mild winter here. Until now...
Its great to see your operation cost breakdown. You are an inspiration.
Something rewarding seeing snow melt!
We got hammered with snow. Looks like you got just a little.
My “back” loathes your driveway 😅
These are great videos and very helpful. The timelapse as well as the cost of running the system helps when deciding if it is a worthwhile investment. And Go Bills!
Heck ya snowmelt video! Thanks for sharing.
Happy New Year Christopher! Nice to see you posting again. Glad the system is still running as specked.
EDIT ; hate loosing windows... mine where more "self - inflected" - edging the walkway once, and mowing two or thee times
Great video! The house and property look fantastic!
40 degrees Celsius here in Australia today and that blizzard looks mighty refreshing right now! Thanks for sharing
I remember watching you build this. Great job. Cheers from Colorado Front Range. Very little snow here so far. Big snow months coming for us. Mtns doing ok so far.
YAY!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
Nice video Chris
Great to see you back I actually was wondering the other day where you have been although until recently probably hasn't been much snow! Looking forward to the videos.
Thanks Matt! Up until this past weekend (Jan 13th), El-Nino was really giving us warmer than normal temps and no snow at all. That all seems to have flipped this week however, as we’ve had back to back systems. I went from having no video content to having a backlog to edit and publish. 😂. The system is working great (and running as I type this), so I should be posting weekly videos for a while!
Hey Chris !
I was wondering when your first video of the year would be. Not that i want to see you get tons of snow lol
It's been the same here in the Capital district not much snow.
Sucks about the window. But it could have been much worse.
Hey how about showing us the new bathroom when its done !!!👍
That was fascinating to see your system operate at its limit, between 1 -2.30 sunday am and 6-8.30 monday morning ( one dot for time so YT wouldnt timestamp it ) we were able to see it get just overwhelmed ( cold + snowfall ) and then catch back up. I also like the different camera angles and could see the difference the system loops made. I really enjoy watching it work.
Happy New Year and take care.
I was hoping my viewers would enjoy seeing that! 😊 I do have the ability to increase the slab temperature which would help when it's overwhelmed like that, but the trade-off would be efficiency when it's not. I literally have it dialed in right to the "edge" at this point, While I find it does get overwhelmed during the intense lake effect snow bands dumping 2-4" per hour, it quickly catches up once they move past. Like you mentioned, you can definitely tell from the front camera that the end of the driveway where the pex is spaced at 9" is not as efficient as where it's 6" throughout the remainder of the slab. That combined with the wind blowing across the front yard and the extremely low temps during this storm. It still did OK though. I'm happy with it! Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts. I appreciate your comment and feedback!
Happy new year Chris! Always look forward to your videos, snow doesn't exist here in subtropical Australia so these timelapses are the next best thing. Hopefully still a few more snowfalls to come before it starts warming up again!
Happy New Year! Thanks for coming back to watch my videos, I really appreciate that! For a while with this strong El-Nino in effect, it has been unseasonably warm with little to no snow here. That seems to have flipped! As of right now I have enough content in backlog from this week for at least 3-4 more videos, and I doubt it’s going to stop anytime soon, so I should have a few more videos at minimum to before before spring! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
I love your house/neighborhood and I STILL MISS NY. I don’t think I’d miss Buffalo though but the Hudson Valley had some pretty big storms!
Happy New Year 🎉
Not bad. Cost to run is tolerable and it's way better than shoveling or snow blowing. Thanks for sharing.
Pretty cool. Just sit back and watch the driveway clear itself.
That's one impressive system you have!
Thanks!! It is 100% DIY and is in its 3rd winter of operation. I documented the entire design and build on my channel. You can find those videos as well as tons of others of it in action melting here: ruclips.net/p/PLdWeMRuZcbQjekwiBk_uy39IS6JFWYORD&si=ZXbme2JVVWTjfLjz
If you have any questions about it, just ask! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Love your videos/system. Happy New Year. Sorry tho... gotta say Go Chiefs, best game of season is tomorrow.
real cool!
Thanks!! Lots more like it here if you’re interested: ruclips.net/p/PLdWeMRuZcbQjM6s46wB7WT_BVpjuq-dF1&si=1IJD_tT5Yaefe1Ms
Saw video of heated driveway struggling with thermal bridging, so i thought about putting jacks into the ground to break ice from underneath
Great video… the power normally goes out when it snows heavy in my city. We had power outages, water pressure dropped and the city was placed on a energy conservation notice the week of 1/14/24, .. we just spread ice melt and get the shovels
Love the update on the Buffalo winter, and I'm thrilled to see how effective your home built system is in typical conditions. Of course there will be extremes where your system won't be able to keep up, but you can recover from those rare bad conditions sooner when you have the infrastructure to catch up. I'm a big infrastructure nerd and my city - Madison, WI - had a historically very snowy 5 day period followed by 6 days of below zero temperatures. Our roads have been extra dangerous during this time and everyone's complaining about the city's ability to fix the problem, without acknowledging the extreme nature of the recent weather.
My favorite part of your videos is the details of your mechanical room, which I why I would LOVE to hear about the home solar set up you teased over the summer. Any updates there? Thanks!
Good to see you back and enjoying the timelapse. Also wondering if and how the solar project has gone. That should be a much easier DIY than this labor of love!
Great video! Have you made any progress on your solar?
Noiceeee🎉
i got 30 inches in this event then for the next few days another 30 then about 20 so about 80 inches in 5 days. i need a new driveway and really looking at doing this . but i am 63 so hard to do any of it myself. and my shop in buffalo got about 1/2 as much as my house in the suburb. now its jan 27 and the temp is 42 F and forecast is super mild the rest of the month. so most of it will melt. i still have 3 ft high snowbanks
A branch from that tree fell last year (?) when you had ice. The ice thermal bridging episode. It needs some attention. I'll bring some guys by. It'll be gone in an hour, for the price of beer and hot dogs. Want some firewood for next year?
Too bad about your casement. 1:55 I've reglazed most kinds of Pella, DGP and sealed. They're typical. Pretty much any glazer, or a handy homeowner. Long lead time on triple glass though. By the time the glass arrives it will be spring, and you won't mind a 20 X 48 inch hole in your house for an hour, as much. At the time it was less $ to reglaze a sash, than replace. Probably still is.
I like watching snow melt. I wish Buffalo got more snow so I can watch it melt. LOL. Sorry about that, eh.
Thanks for the post. It's good to see you are doing well as can be!
Do you still use the same model cameras as your last videos?
I'm still looking to install one day, and as I remember, you had a decent setup.
You should move that window so that doesn't happen again. Obviously the window is in the wrong place. If you moved it at least 50 feet from that tree you should be okay. Be sure to hug the tree so it treats you better.
Like another viewer mentioned, it's really wild the way it fell. It had it out for my window. It could've fallen 1000 other ways and it hit it head on. I am thankful it did not damage the frame, or the entire window with all 3 sashes would need to come out. The broken sash is still available, but it is $1,100 😩. I will take your advice and give the tree a hug so it doesn't cost me even more. lol. Thanks for watching!
Have you covered your security cam system. I have a system but want to update it and was wondering what you are using.
Hello, great idea!
Do you think heating mats would work with a gravel driveway or there should be thermal mass as it is with concrete slab?
That’s not a bad price to pay, if I new about this I would of done this to my 3 car drive way, and my round about on the side when me and my sis build our home. We’re ssi/ disabled and I have to use a snow blower the best I can
The new cameras look fantastic! What system do you use?
Hey Chris just wondering how to find someone to price out a system like you have, my daughter has a very steep drive here in WI and it’s horrible in the slightest snow fall
I wonder what the heat does to the underside of the cars with road salt on them?
Is the tree a Red Maple? As its name suggests, red leaves in the fall. It appears to be slowly dying from the look of the top branches. An arborist could tell. I have one that needs to come down.
Hello Chris, curious, didn't see the gas meter clocking (probably because dark). What did your clocking come up to?.
Do the units go to high fire at start up or do you lock in it?
Also, what kind of incoming gas pressure do you have, coming to your home, before the gas meter regulator (example: 7 inches, 14 inches, 2 pounds)?
If it's 2 pounds, you have to convert your input calculations, on you after meter side pressure
Let us know how much trouble you have getting your window repaired
I was wondering when this would show up,.after spending $2500 to buy an old 4 wheeler and another $1200 on a plow. Was thinking, that would go a long way towards a few years of melting a driveway.
That’s not a bad solution! Unfortunately I don’t have the room to store fun toys like that, but I’m sure it would get the job done and be fun in the process! Let me know how it works out and be safe! Thanks for watching my videos and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it.
@@DeckerChristopherJ we are in Henrietta, just down the road basically but a different world snow-wise! But it works good. It can plow a foot of heavy wet snow easily. The fluffy stuff we had this week it throws it off to the side quite a bit. We have a 200 foot long and double wide driveway, our driveway is wider than the street we live on. But yeah, 30 minutes clears the drive just fine. I have to add a rubber scraper to the cutting surface of the blade though, as the blade doesn't do a great job on that last inch.
your neighbors must be uber jealous of you.
