Thanks Dr Ken I'm just weaning myself of Omeprazole after being on them for 3 years dropping down each month was on 40mg now on 20mg every three days .Diet is key
I was diagnosed in April with Silent Reflux. Now on a low dose of Omeprazole since April. My chronic cough is gone. I have had a stomachache since starting and I have lost the same 6 pounds since April. I am worried about stopping (other than the cough I had no symptoms) and I am worried to take them.
My doctor had me on Nexium for almost two years. Every time I stopped them I would have the worse heartburn you can imagine. I’ve been on Keto for 14 months now and not only did the heartburn stop completely but I’ve lost 105 pounds. I follow Dr Berry’s RUclips videos and I have never felt better in my life and I’m 64 years old. Thank you Dr Berry. I feel like you and Keto have saved my life.
Short term, 2-6 weeks -maybe up to 12 WEEKS!!! I've been on Prilosec/Omeprazole for 20 YEARS!!! Thank God, I have discovered your channel for my multiple health issues!!!
The studies were done with 40 mg dosages, OTC they’re only 20 mg. The probability of having any long term issue from using them is almost non existent. The people who sued also used more than they’re supposed to take typically for any benefit. It was also only around 13,000 people out of 10s of millions of people who take it.
@@naytewilson i know. I do not know why people are scaring other individuals with real problem and they have to take ppis..must be something related to marketing to promote their own products!
My spouse had such severe hearburn he actually had 2nd degree burns on his esophagus. Since he has been on keto, zero heartburn. No more meds for him either. ❤ keto
I have hyper mobility, acid reflux and difficulty swallowing are part of the problems associated with it. For the last 10 years the doctor has insisted I have COPD because I have problems on and off with breathing, I have tried explaining that the problem is not with my chest, the problem is in my nose and throat. Finally in December 2022 I saw an ENT specialist who said that my nose and throat were full of acid and that was what was causing my breathing problems. Now I just have to get my doctor to listen to me and get me an appointment with a specialist
Everything you said is true. I am a 60 year old woman. Been on most of the proton pump's most of my life has digestive problems at the age of 19. Last year I changed my diet to all organic gress feed meats. Fruit and veggies. Now I'm off all medicines. And doing great. It's amazing how real food heals what doctor can't. (Love the information you give us.)
Oh no! I’ve been on protonix for 5 years! I mentioned increased forgetfulness to my physician and she did mention the protonix causing Alzheimer’s. I’ve been on keto for 5 weeks and I haven’t had issues with heartburn. Also if I avoid eating too late, too fast I don’t have issues. I will try your recommendation and slowly reduce the dosage and eventually stop taking it. Calling my Dr. right now! Thank you for this information.
Hey Dr Berry - notification squad here! Thanks so much for this video. I thought you'd want to know that *this* is the reason I started keto six months ago. I have had GERD for 20 years (37 now) and did the whole ppi and/or antacid thing. I finally found keto and gave it a shot. It has completely resolved my issues. No more pills! And this was after I talked to three different doctors (plus a couple of EGDs and a manometry) about possible dietary fixes and getting nothing helpful. For me, this isn't just a diet. I like your language. It's a way of eating, and one that I intend to do as long as I live. Keep up the great work, and I'll keep sharing your vids!
I am glad Keto has completely resolved it for you in six months. I still have some acid reflux after 8 months, but I am much better than I was before Keto.
Had heartburn for years and years. Took Nexium daily for years also. Finally quit sugar. Absolutely no more heartburn. Definitely a little slice of heaven. Great video for everyone.
On the standard American diet I had horrible heartburn. On keto I still had horrible heartburn. I have been living a carnivore lifestyle for over 9 months and have had ZERO heartburn! It has been just one of the Hallelujah changes that the carnivore diet has brought into my life.
Was on heartburn meds since I was 18, ironically about the same time High Fructose came out. It was to the point a few years ago they were ready to replace my stomach valves. I changed to Keto Jan 3, 2018 within 2-months I was off them and ALL meds I was taking within 4-months. I have not had an issue with heartburn, no more back pain and felling awesome. Keto is not a diet, it is a way of life that has increased my way of living enormously. I have also increased bone mass from 2.8% to my current 3.7%, was also at the dentist and my gums went from a 5 to a 2, just amazing!
I have been keto now for a year. I've been taking Tecta (pantoprazole magnesium) 40 mg. for close to 10 years. My doctor just keeps prescribing them and I had no idea they should only be taken for a few weeks. I didn't have heartburn but the top of my stomach was so inflamed that I vomited every time I ate. Not fun. I have reduced the dosage to every second day for the last month - so far so good. I will now start taking one every third day and see what happens. I'm hoping to get off of them entirely. I have had lots of eye issues (macular holes) and I had a minor fall and broke my hip a couple of years ago. Both things could certainly be a result of taking this med for so long. I am hoping there is not more damage done. Thank you so much for this information.
Thanks so much for your videos! This is one I wish I knew about years ago. I took Omeprazole for about 5 years, because of Eosinophilic esophagitis. After taking it in the morning many thought I had a sunburn. I also had a host of other issues, although most of those no doubt were tied to my poor health. Two two liters of Mountain Dew for many years did not help. I stopped cold turkey from the omeprazole and had a rotten six months which I managed with sauerkraut, pickles, apple cider vinegar and apples. I also use ground red pepper on any tomato sauces. Now with Keto & intermittent fasting I am down over 60lbs and don't have heart burn or choke anymore on food or water. Many health problems including a lot of arthritis has gotten a lot better. My blood work is better than it was 18 years ago! Now have pushed into the carnivore side trying to see if God will allow more of my body to heal. We truly are fearfully and wonderful made! I have learned a lot from you and Dr. Fung! Thanks again!
I was on Prilosec for several years. One day I read how this medicine caused hip fractures, so I quit immediately-fortunately, I did not suffer from any cold turkey effects. As for the foods that caused indigestion, I stopped eating them. I started changing my diet and I have been feeling better ever since.
This is awesome. My hubby got pneumonia last year for no reason. Never had a cough, not the typical pneumonia. He has changed his diet and he is now weaning off of nexium. Thank you very much for this info.
Wow ...I have live on over the counter for like 10 years daily and had my throat stretched 3 times...food hangs up at times and have to make myself throw up to get the food up plus it has effected my voice really bad..so thank you...
I took the PPIs for years, knowing how bad they were for me but also knowing how horrible the GERD was--I lived in fear of that pain! After a couple of months on keto, I was pain free and I haven't taken a pill in over a year. Amazing!
I get it only very rarely now and when I do, a few teaspoons of baking soda in a glass of water and it's gone in minutes. Store brand baking soda is about 80 cents a box-love it.
Further to my last comment, I have taken the time to reread the enclosed leaflet that comes in the package. Sure enough all your points are mentioned ( except keto, of course) it's been years since I read it and I can only say, I should have noticed sooner that it warns of the use for longer than 1 year, recommends 8 weeks preferably. I will be working on an alternate day dosage for a week and see how it goes, along with my keto diet and ACV drink. Thanks for the vid.
Dr Berry, I think you could make a really interesting video on the link between leaky gut (caused by things like lectins and gluten) and chronic inflammation and the development of autoimmune disease. It's something that I feel is a major contributor but doesn't get enough recognition!
I definitely respect your advice and your research. I found you on RUclips months ago when I was trying to educate myself about acid reflux. I just wanted to share my story, short version. I was diagnosed with Hiatal Hernia, EoE and acid reflux. GI prescribed a double dose of omeprazole. I took it even though I knew about all the side effects you listed. I reacted from it so I stopped cold turkey. I took Zantac for many years previously which seemed to have diminishing benefits. I found a naturopath that prescribed a anti-inflammatory diet. It is near a paleo diet but minus all nightshades. If I follow the diet I don’t have any heartburn. If I cheat with wheat or cow dairy, I suffer. After 6 months of this diet and reintroducing various foods I’ve determined that cow dairy and gluten are the biggest triggers. I’ve experimented with goat cheese and have had no issues. I also want to mention that GI doctors are armed with a standard treatment for reflux called an elimination diet. It consists of eliminating gluten, dairy, soy, eggs and shellfish. There may be other variations of this but the point is that this is always their last resort. What’s unbelievable is that research says that this is by far the most successful treatment but they avoid it supposedly because they think people find it too difficult. I guess good health is too difficult so we need a pill. At 6 months now I am feeling about 95% better but I am prepared to accept that this i am probably only about 25% of the way to curing this.
I took omeprazole daily for more than 10 years, always had heartburn. After just a short time on Keto, had no more heartburn. Haven’t had a pill now in nearly a year! Never thought it was possible.
Doc, this video has been huge for me. I have been on PPIs for 10+ years, and was just recently bumped from 20 to 40 mg by my old doctor to help with some allergy induced reflux symptoms. Started with a new doctor and decided that I should get off of the PPIs completely after bringing up my concerns about it from seeing your video. He tested me for deficiencies and sure enough D was very low and B12 was borderline low. The weaning off process has actually not been as bad as I anticipated it being either. Thanks for putting this good info out there for us!
Had heartburn and acid reflux from my twenties (I am now 48) up until I started keto little over a year ago. I even had heartburn while doing low carb. But! Went full strict Healthy Keto & about a week into it never had heartburn again! I've been keto for over a year.
I have had acid reflux since I was a teenager (I'm in my 50's now) and was diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus in 2010. I've been on a PPI daily since then (had to finally go to Dexilant because the others stopped working). I'm an RN and I know that daily use isn't good and I want so badly to get off of the PPI but the rebound reflux (for me it's mainly chest pain symptoms) of going off of them scares me to death. I will watch your other video and try this. I've done kept/low carb off and on but I need to stick with it. I'm due for my 3 yr upper end in January and I'd love to be off of the PPI's then just to see how it turns out! Thanks Dr. Berry!
Hi, I know your comment is 3 years old but I'm curious what your chest pain symptoms are like? My husband just started keto and tried going off of his omeprazole that he's been on for years and is having the same chest issues, he's never had these before but this is what the doctor thinks It is from him trying to get off his omeprazole. I don't know if he should try weaning off of them or just stay on them for life like the doctor wants him to do. It gets so frustrating after a while. How are you doing?
@@jessie9653 right now, I am off of my PPI and have been for almost 3 months. The "chest pain" was like a burning sensation behind my sternum when I weaned off the PPI. With my reflux which I had since my teen years, I would get nauseated, have sharp pains behind my sternum and eventually I really had no symptoms at all with it. I've fallen off the keto wagon quite a few times but I'm doing keto/carnivore now, losing weight and I only eat one or two times a day within a 6-8 hr window. I'm due for my 3 yr scope this yr so we will see how it goes. I'm actually seeing Dr. Rob Cywes (CarbAddictionDoc) and hoping to get a 2nd opinion from him on my GERD because I know he's more accepting of diet as treatment than my regular GI. I just want to be on as little medication as possible so right now I take allergy meds (Claritin/Singulair) and a couple of vitamins. Its hard to find a GI Doc that will support no meds for GERD, I hope you are able to find someone who will work with your husband on it 🙏
Day 12 on the lion diet. Looking forward to healing my acid reflux, LPR, and other ailments. I have been on Prevacid for a few years and have begun to taper. I am down 13 lbs already and have no inflammation. I’m not even into this 2 weeks yet! A few other small things I’ve noticed, my eye bags are literally disappearing before my own eyes. My skin is clearer and I’m only sleeping about 7 hours a night. Normally I’d need 8-10 to feel rested. Thank you Dr. Berry for what you do. You truly are leading the masses to better health physically and mentally. God Bless you. ❤
Was prescribed Nexium 10 years ago for reflux. Was diagnosed with gastritis and non cancerous polyps after having a gastroscope. After seeing this you tube video I have weaned myself off Nexium and only take one when required. I still have a way to go to be on the keto way of eating but for the sake of my health I really need to rid myself of the extra 20 kilos I carry around. I’ve also been on Lovan for depression for about 15 years since my mid forties.
Bad thing about this, is when your doctor prescribes these, they don't tell you to only take it for no longer than 12 weeks. My doctor kept refilling mine for over 15 years, until recently, that she told me that I need to just take the OTC one because the this anti acid med was bad for my bones. Of course though, she also began hounding me to be taking Calcium because of my age. But, after listening to Dr. Berry, I have stopped both, but have also been doing KETO for a few weeks now.
Thanks to pantoprazole, I ended up with low serum calcium levels which triggered ventricular ectopic (VE) beats. I've had the VE diagnosis since my late 20's whenever I got low on magnesium it would happen. Well the mag wasn't fixing it this time, I took so much magnesium I got diarrhoea. So I told my doc, he ran my bloods, and when he said my calcium was low, I said "that'll be from the PPI I've been taking for 20 years". He said "why?", I kindly suggested he look it up!!! I already knew PPI's blocked calcium absorption, but I am still confused as to why it became a problem all if a sudden after 20yrs. I was taking calcium supplements too. Now I have to wean off the PPI, enough is enough!
@@swedensufalI'm aware of this thanks, already tried different brands of magnesium at that time. However you need to re read my comment, I had blood taken and tested and I was found to have low blood *calcium* levels. I had to increase my calcium supplement to twice a day and that fixed the problem.
What a coincidence..a video to cure my reflux that I am suffering like a hell in these days. Can't even breath properly sometimes. Feel like wheezing. It's very uncomfortable to do the day to day life with this. gonna try to change my diet. Thanks Dr. Ken.
Can you do a video on Barrett’s Esophagus? Doctors are telling me that I have to be on PPIs for life because of that and I don’t find a lot of educated information on this condition so it would be nice to get a video all about that and what to do naturally because they scare you with the cancer risk. I have no dysplasia And it’s 1 cm the last time I checked which was like six months ago but I still have daily Gerd symptoms despite being on PPI’s for about six months now and when I try to stop medications like you say it gets really really bad
My doctor had me on Nexium and Ambien for over 3 years and me over 65 years old (70 now)! Every time I saw him he would just refill the script. Even when I told him I was having memory issues. Oh yes, and also Simvistatin! I just quit all of them and instead of going through withdrawals, I started feeling better almost immediately (had one headache, which I never get). Getting memory back has been a challenge, but continuous progress. I have a different Doctor now, who appreciates my involvement in my own health. None of the above are suitable for elderly in my opinion. I am eating PKD now (like Zsofia Clemens advocates) and feeling great. Confession: I do eat liver, but treat it as a med, not a treat! :)
Have you tried spaghetti squash? It grows above ground. (Keto) Split the squash open and lay opened side down in baking vessel. Its done when the stringy flesh comes out easily with a fork. About 45 min. This method keeps it from being soggy. The tomato might be the cause of that particular case of heartburn. It is in the nightshade family. Use enzymes with the meal.
I have suffered from acid reflux for nearly 30 years. 18-20 yrs ago I was put on acifex and then Prilosec. I have been on that for probably 15 yrs. I started Keto his past Jan and lost 62 lbs. I stopped the atorvastatin but was scared to stop the Prilosec. I finally did stop June 1 and haven’t had any problems. Finally!!!
Had my gallbladder out in 2006 and was told that because of that fact I would need Omeprazole for life. I believe that's also a PPI :( . I went to my GP recently and told him that since I've been Keto and lost 40+ pounds I'd like to try reducing ALL of my meds to see how it goes (I was on 7 different meds) He told me my BP was perfect, my hbalc was coming right down, and the PPI I'm on shouldn't be taken long term due to Osteoporosis risks, so he's happy for that to be reduced/stopped too :) . Looks like Keto might be responsible for not only cutting my risks of drug complications, but also for saving a ton of money for our NHS :) 7 meds every month for the last 13 years adds up to crazy money and that's just for one person, imagine the savings to be had if all doctors were up to date with appropriate diet/nutrition needs across millions of patients?
I learned a long time ago from the woman who ran up my local health food store at the time the people complaining about what appears to be heartburn and or indigestion is actually a symptom of not having enough stomach acid in their body. And instead of an antacid what they really need to do is include some Betadine pepian and other things to help the body digest
George's aloe vera juice will stop heartburn in its tracts (a little longer if gut burn is from gallbladder issues). My husband took this juice several times a day for almost a year in order to repair the damage from the burning gut. Know that this juice should not cause much, if any, gastric distress. However, fixing the burn damage is just one part of the issue, you'll need to correct the metabolic issues as well.
Wow. Taking both types. My acid is eroding my esophagus and I'm losing my voice. Not sure what else to do. I did start keto / low carb. Hopefully this will help.
I watch your videos for all health issues . I had bad toe nail fungus and your remedy helped . I followed it everyday for a year and it went away . Thank you so much . So now I’m on to acid reflux problem . Thanks for your videos
Because sugar causes gastroparesis, (paralysis)and the food lies there and putrifies. As we age we don't produce enough stomach acid either. GERD is caused by not having ENOUGH stomach acid.
I took Nexium daily for many years, and then later - Omeprazole. It was only when I watched an earlier video of yours that I found out that should never have happened. Been weaning myself off of it. That has taken a few months to do. Now I probably take one or two a week. I'm using diluted ACV to deal with the heartburn as much as possible. But I hadn't thought of going back to the doc to get a lower dose or something else instead. Thanks for continuing to produce such high quality videos. You've been my go-to, online Keto doctor, and I share your videos wherever I can. :-)
I have been on either protonix or prilosec for 23 years. This video is scaring the hell out of me. No medication existed until I was 28 years old. I have had stress related reflux since I was 11 years old. I have been diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus since 2003. Keto did not seem to help my reflux although I did lose 35 pounds. I have a very problematic hiatal hernia and the gastro doctor says the surgery to fix it is only for extreme cases and he does not deem me extreme enough. I feel like I am doomed
I didn't know this. Been on Nexium for over 7 years. I thought because the acid refulx came back I had to go back on. Seen many Drs and NOT ONE said this to me!! I don't have any serious side effects. Yet. Wish I'd known.
I used to have severe heartburn, acid reflux, and the shortness of breath that came with it. I was taking the maximum dose each of a combination of proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers for twenty years. Recently I figured out what was wrong and stopped them cold turkey. I found out that my reflux was from TOO LITTLE ACID, not too much. Your stomach has sensors and when your stomach acid gets low, your esophageal sphincter opens up and that's when you get the back splash of acid up into your esophagus and mouth. When you have enough acid, your esophageal sphincter closes tight and only opens to allow food in. To correct it, I have been taking acidifiers with every meal. I take Betaine HCL and apple cider vinegar to lower the pH in my stomach and increase the amount of acid. That eliminated most of the heartburn. Cutting vegetable cooking oils, and other inflammatory foods, eliminated the remaining heartburn. The great doctor's advice about going with an anti inflammatory carnivore diet is awesome.
I have been off the PPIs also for several years with little problem. I found I do get mild reflux even with the nut flour baked goods, even when I bake them at 330 degrees. My suspicion is that it is the glycotoxins from the temperature of the cooking, and that my detoxification capability has been overloaded. I consider this very serious, kind of like a A1C of 5.8, when the doctor brushes it off and says it is nothing. I dont eat nut flour baked goods anymore. Dr.Bredesen goes into detail on glycotoxins in his book on preventing and reversing Alzheimer's, and Dr. Seignalet spend a lot of time on toxins caused by high temperature cooking. ( Dr. Seignalet is a candidate for the most competent and talented physician in history, IMO. Sorry Dr. B, you have a ways to go even with 600k+ subscribers.)
oh good grief. i've been on these meds for about 12 years or so. and i have tons of health issues, including deficiencies in many of the nutrients you mention. but since i stopped eating late at night and over eating, i rarely have heart burn anymore. yep... stopping it tonight.
Keto definitely fixed my chronic heartburn... I took Pepcid AC almost every night for 2-3 years... I also take apple cider vinegar as well to get the acid in my stomach up as well.
So glad I found this video Doctor. I have esophageal scaring due to radiation I received for Hodgkins Disease. I have been on a PPI for 30 plus years. I have been trying to figure out along with my Doctor to get off the PPI (Dexilant).
I have had eight heart attacks, aorta valve replacement, and a pacemaker. To compound my challenge the scar tissue in my esophagus and trachea is very sensitive to any acid reflex. I am trying to find a good gastrointestinal doctor to guide me off the PPI. Thank you!
I was taking this pill for 32 years...i am 70 yrs old..was getting bone pain at night and terrible stiffness when getting up from sitting position i started to check side effects..OMG i was shocked and mad at my doctor i stopped taking it..i am vitamin d deficient, osteo ..spoke to my doctor who said i was wrong and prescribed me another PPI... i am now waiting to check if i have h pyololy..before i try and work out what i am to do without my doctors help
I've been on PPI's forever and I'm 57. I have had numerous EGD's and Colonoscopies, I've had irritations in the stomach and a duodenal ulcer, they just say keep taking the pills. As a result I found out this year I have delayed gastric emptying, after doing my own research I decided to ween off PPI's, I now take a Prevacid about once every 5 days when the stomach and esophageal burning can't be calmed with Tums or Maalox. I did try your suggestion of the apple cider vinegar and I've still not forgiven you for that!! My god it was tossing acid on an open wound, I was in pain and miserable the entire day, had to take the Prevacid and Phenergan, geesh! I am also trying to fix my diet and lose weight to help the symptoms of GERD and abd. pain and nausea. When I eat it's like there is a basketball in my stomach and I get stomach pain and nausea, all from the danged slowed gastric emptying caused by the PPIs. My gastroenterologist offered me antibiotics to help but I really do not want any more drugs from doctors, I'm done! :) BTW, love your videos!!
I have three of the heart burn medications sitting in front of me, that you mentioned in your video. Newest is Panteprazole. Other two are Ranitidine and lastly Omeprazole. I have horrific heartburn. My normal Doctor is setting me up to be scoped. I am at the point it hurts to drink water, because it burns all the way to my bariatric sleeved stomach. My bariatric Dr has had me on Ranitidine since the day of surgery 11/26/14. I seriously need to find healing doctors not draw a pill out of the big pharma bag of horrible tricks.
Heartburn for me came from too little acid. At times I had to sleep in a recliner instead of the bed. Apple cider vinegar helped a lot. I have used red wine vinegar as well. Not eating before bed is also a good thing. Reading other comments makes me realize since going Keto, I have not had heartburn, but then I try to do 2 tbs of apple cider vinegar a day.
I've been taking Omeprazole for 20 years now and am very aware of the 14 day warning, but I was diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus via gastroscopy early on. If left untreated, the lining of the esophagus can convert to cancer cells. Not good. So I think Dr. Berry needs to address this form of heartburn which can be different than "ordinary" heartburn. Dr Berry????? Posted this but buried in replies. Needs to be addressed, please.
Have either of you been or are on the Keto or Carnivore eating plan? That's your first step if you listened. This is not a temporary "diet"...it's a way of life. You feel SO much better. I had terrible gerd/acid reflux before Keto. 6 months later...haven't had either in months (unless I eat bad). It really works. He said to keep taking your meds and slowly wean yourself off. Listen again to this video. The answers are all there.
@@teresa3778 The answers might not be all there. The tough thing for an MD is the wide variance of each person's internal physiology. One size doesn't always fit "all". To answer your question, I read a Carnivore book and it's not for me - at least not all of it. I've been on a modified Keto if you can call it that - high protein, high fat, very low carbs. Been losing weight and gaining muscle. Re my Barrett's, my episodes of nighttime reflux are now rare. Glad you are doing much better and that it works for you.
@@rvnmedic1968 It really helps to incorporate the intermittent fasting and not eating at least 3 hours before going to bed. Just a suggestion...I do understand it's not always a "one size fits all", but if you do both, I think you will find it just might work for you. Best of luck.
@@teresa3778 I do intermittent fasting, first meal ~ noon, then dinner at 5:30. Also exercise every day. Good recommendation, but I've been doing it now for a couple of years. And I've got an Endoscopy scheduled for 5 Aug 2019. Take Care
Only one MD in my area, for a two hour drive around. She put me on max PPI's when I had a little heartburn during pregnancy (which, I found out later, may have gone away after pregnancy). After I started taking them, if they didn't absorb properly, I felt like my esophagus was melting in acid, felt like I was dying. My doctor, she had me on them for 27 years, wouldn't let me get off them even when my blood iron level had dropped to 2mcg, when you need 100 mcg to survive after a car crash long enough for an ambulance to get to you. My daughter got me on carnivore, I struggled to get off the PPI's for two months, then the reflux was pretty much gone, and I don't feel like my food is just sitting in my stomach rotting all day long, anymore.
I went to 3 doctors, they gave me antacids (didn't buy them at all), went to 5 pharmacies and asked them if they have anything to increase stomach acid and they said "you can't have too little acid" and then I just ordered betain hcl from the internet. In the beginning I used 3-4 capsules per meal, after one month, with clean eating, I can go without them. Best 30$ I've spent in my entire life.
My mother has been taking a PPI for over 3 years. She was recently taken off it to treat for possible ulcers. She had gotten to the point where she was nauseous most of the time. I'm trying to get her on a more Ketogenic lifestyle. She's Type 2 with A1Cs in the low 8s. I've made some headway with her however. Oh and she's 95.
My husband and I are new to the diet (only a few weeks) but we've noticed a significant reduction in heartburn. My husband has esophageal spasms as a result of his and he hasn't had to take his meds for a few days now. On our cheat day (birthday/last day of chemo for his dad) we paid for it, and it just confirmed to us that we're doing something right. Edit: My husband was on an Rx dose of Prilosec 4 times a day for his spasms. After we found out about the class action suit and all of the side effects his Dr. didn't tell us about, we pulled him off of it on our own. We have him on OTC generic Pepcid on an as needed basis.
I’ve been drinking homemade kefir every day for two years….the acid reflux was gone almost immediately. And I’ve not had so much as a sniffle the entire time, even though others around me have colds and respiratory infections. The immune system starts in the gut….getting rid of reflux tells me that my gut is happy now
I used to take Prilosec but heard about it's dangers a few years ago (thanks to the internet - not a doctor) so I quit. I drink a lot of ice tea - so I switched to only Rooibos herbal tea in the afternoon which helped a lot. I've started cutting back on my carbs & eating more healthy fat now, heading toward Keto and it's helped even more!
I was initially put on cimetidine at age 18, when it came on the market. I was on something similar (H2 receptor anragonist or PPI) continuously for the next FORTY YEARS. Keto fixed it
I’ve been on Somac for acid reflux since I had a gastric sleeve in 2008. I also have a hiatus hernia. I can only eat very tiny amount of food consisting of protein shakes with milk, eggs, puréed pumpkin, soup, yogurt, organic grass fed sausage, and cheese. I take 40mg morning and night and also 20mls of Gavascon each night and it’s now starting to not contain the reflux. I wake up during the night with it in my mouth and cough so much I have to sit up for around an hour until coughing subsides. I’m terrified of getting cancer but GP says I’m safe to take this medication and that he did is thesis (wrong word but can’t remember it) at medical school so knows what he’s taking about. I don’t have a peace. I’m 75 yrs old on a limited budget. Tried Keto but found it expensive. I’ve had endoscopies and all is clear. At my wits end now. 😞
I took Prilosec every day for almost 10 years. Before that I took massive doses of Zantac. While I was on the typical American junk food diet, it was the only thing that helped the heartburn. I started Keto 3 years ago, I still took the prilosec for about a year because I was too scared to stop. But about 2 years ago, I switched to apple cider vinegar and have not taken an antacid of any sort since. The beginning of this year, I stopped the ACV and have not had heartburn since. I'm still wondering what long term damage I did.
I have Barrett’s Esophagus because of My GERD....the pills kept backing up in my esophagus. I stopped taking them. My gastroenterologist warned me not to do that. I was under diagnosed for a year. 😡 He said I would have to take these for the rest of my life or get full blown esophageal cancer. I’m half way there now...
I am not sure if I can write here comment like this, but my severe heartburn was completely gone after Hulda Regher Clark’s liver flushes. I still do them a few times a year, and I didn’t have one single heartburn since 1998.
Dr.Berry I want to say thank you so much you are a true blessing to us all. My only regret is that I live in South Florida and not in your town. My question is about vitamin D and K2. My lovely wife of 38 years and I both had gastric bypass surgery 11 years ago. At the time I was 550lbs and she was 350lbs. I now weigh 345& she weighs 248lbs. I don't know exactly how much of our small intestine they removed but I do know that it wasn't just a little bit. I believe it was in the area of 25% plus shortly after they also removed our gallbladders. According to your video vitamin D and K2 are fat soluble vitamins and should be taken with some kind of GOOD fats ie grass fed butter or avocado oil. My problem is that we don't have gallbladders and from what I have been able to see if you don't have a gallbladder you may not be able to get all the benefits of the vitamins because your absorption of the vitamins is lacking. I was wondering if you would please let me know how we can help our absorption of the vitamins that you recommend. Better yet would you please make a video so that everyone that is in our predicament can be helped. Thank you so much. I pray that you truly understand how much of a blessing you really are. We are going to start helping you out as much as we can being on disability it won't be much but every little bit helps. Please let me know if you can help us and people like us. I not sure if you have already covered this and if you have let me know which video it is. Have a wonderful day and God bless you today and everyday. Mr.& Mrs. Fernandez.
I didn't know where to post a private message and then thought maybe would be better for other viewers to see my progress.5 years ago I had a complete shake up of my and my families life. I suffered a Carotid artery dissection that put me in the ICU for 5 days then another 3 days in a telemetry ward while trying to control my out of control high blood pressure caused by nerve damage and swelling along the carotid arteries pathway which also is the nerve pathway for nerves that are part of controlling blood pressure. after about 7 months of healing, oh yeah the inner lining of my carotid artery tore and blood got between the layers that makes up the artery walls and blocked the blood flow where the carotid goes through the skull so no blood to the right side of my brain. The doctors gave me the go ahead to go back to work, which was very heavy construction work. after 8 months and 3 different jobs because I could not do my work any more without intense pain and tiredness my doctors said not to work. it took almost 3 years of starving and my wife working 3 jobs while stressing about her husbands health I received disability. As you can imagine someone living a very sedentary life and following sort of what the doctors said I should eat I ended up at 262 pounds and at a regular followup visit after a blood test my doc said he didnt like my glucose level and ordered an a1c test which came back high at 7.2 and they started me on Metformin . 3 months later another a1c and it was down to 5.7. So, a year and 2 months later another blood test before a regular visit and when at the visit the doctor told me my a1c was at 12 which as we know is wicked dangerous so was started on Jardiance. I started on Jardiance almost 3 weeks ago and while looking up the medicine and how to change my eating habits to help my diabetes I ran across the Keto lifestyle and 1 week ago I and my wife started it I just received my glucose and ketone meter and 2 hours after eating a big fatty meal with basically no carbs my glucose level was 101 and my ketone level was 1.1. Thats 1 week after starting and from what I have read and watched I think 1.1 along with the Jardiance taking glucose out of my body I am well on my way to much better health and eventually reducing my medicines. I now take 14 meds of all kinds to keep my body from killing itself and eating itself and not in a good way. Just thought you and your followers might be interested in my progress. Thank you for all your videos and info so that I could heal myself.
Taking PPI for 3 months a day for my mild reflux was the biggest mistake I have ever made in my life. I drop the PPI and then had 30 days of worst reflux in my life which I believe it was a cold turkey. I started to take apple cider vinegar and I stop eating grains as much as I can and finally I can sleep at nights.
Angela Sue look into an operation called a nissen fundoplication and hiatal hernia repair. It’s a serious operation, but I had one and feel so much better!
I was on and off of Nexium for about 2 years before it was realized I had gallstones, thus having my gallbladder removed. I ended up developing a B12 deficiency (pins and needles feeling, cracks in the corners of my mouth, tired) and my doctor had me give myself monthly injections of B12 for over a year to get back to normal levels. All of this happened 10 years ago when I was 21.
This next video will tell you how to improve your heartburn/GERD pain without that pill

Thanks Dr Ken I'm just weaning myself of Omeprazole after being on them for 3 years dropping down each month was on 40mg now on 20mg every three days .Diet is key
Hey doc off topic but have you considered doing a video on reversing arteriosclerosis?
I was diagnosed in April with Silent Reflux. Now on a low dose of Omeprazole since April. My chronic cough is gone. I have had a stomachache since starting and I have lost the same 6 pounds since April. I am worried about stopping (other than the cough I had no symptoms) and I am worried to take them.
Does this include the generic over the counter Nexium?
Are H2 blockers safe long term? Or any other type?
My doctor had me on Nexium for almost two years. Every time I stopped them I would have the worse heartburn you can imagine. I’ve been on Keto for 14 months now and not only did the heartburn stop completely but I’ve lost 105 pounds. I follow Dr Berry’s RUclips videos and I have never felt better in my life and I’m 64 years old. Thank you Dr Berry. I feel like you and Keto have saved my life.
Wow - congrats on your health success!!
Did you just stop the nexium completely or did you wean yourself off?
some people who feel better with keto end up having had gluten intolerance which was responsible for the heart burn.

Please listen to the doc here. I was on the brink of disaster with daily PPIs. Finally did my own research and was able to reverse it.
Thanks doc. I've been doing strict keto for about 3 months and my heart burn has improved about 50% .
Eating Keto has stopped my nightly heartburn. It's a miracle. :)
Amazing!
I had it too, now it's gone because of keto diet even though I started it for another reason. It's great though! ❤️ I feel so much better now.
I get it only very rarely now and when I do, a few teaspoons of baking soda in a glass of water and it's gone in minutes. Store brand baking soda is about 80 cents a box-love it.
A Rib eye a day keeps the heart burn away
Thank you for making this vid! My dad takes these every day. I'm hoping if I show this to my dad he will stop taking them and know the risk :)
PPI KILLED my father...kidneys!!
Well done 👏
Doc, this video has been huge for me. I have been on PPIs for 10+ years, and was just recently bumped from 20 to 40 mg by my old doctor to help with some allergy induced reflux symptoms. Started with a new doctor and decided that I should get off of the PPIs completely after bringing up my concerns about it from seeing your video. He tested me for deficiencies and sure enough D was very low and B12 was borderline low. The weaning off process has actually not been as bad as I anticipated it being either. Thanks for putting this good info out there for us!
Do you remember how they had you wean off of it?
Its hard to find a GI Doc that will support no meds for GERD, I hope you are able to find someone who will work with your husband on it 🙏
I use digestive enzymes... As needed and they work so well. (Essential enzymes) is best for me.
Can you please, please make a video on chronic gastritis. 🙏🏼
Some form of Mg supplements are bad. You should choose different forms of Mg Supplement.
@@swedensufalI'm aware of this thanks, already tried different brands of magnesium at that time. However you need to re read my comment, I had blood taken and tested and I was found to have low blood *calcium* levels. I had to increase my calcium supplement to twice a day and that fixed the problem.
Try Magnesium Glycinate or magnesium taurate. Magnesium citrate acts as a laxative.
What a coincidence..a video to cure my reflux that I am suffering like a hell in these days. Can't even breath properly sometimes. Feel like wheezing. It's very uncomfortable to do the day to day life with this. gonna try to change my diet. Thanks Dr. Ken.
The wheezing is caused by aspirating what comes up in your throat while you sleep. Need enzymes, magnesium. Eat last meal earlier helps too.
Thanks!
Thank you very much Larry!!

I'm so happy being off another pill. One of many but a step closer. Missing out on pasta is so worth not suffering reflux 24/7.

I've been taking nexium several years. This is scary. Definitely need to change!
I hear you,but not stopping my prilosec.been taking it for years!When i stop,heartburn,arggh!
Yup...exactly the reason they do NOT want us to eat the right way! $$$!
OMG. Been on PPI for 5 years +. Screaming as I write this because I am in so much pain, acid reflux. Got osteoporosis as well.
I learned a long time ago from the woman who ran up my local health food store at the time the people complaining about what appears to be heartburn and or indigestion is actually a symptom of not having enough stomach acid in their body. And instead of an antacid what they really need to do is include some Betadine pepian and other things to help the body digest
What is betadine papain and what does is do ?
@@Makers12Video It's actually called betaine hydrochloride with pepsin, also listed as betaine HCL.
I was on Nexium for several years for acid reflux. He put me on Pepcid. My heartburn and GERD has been crazy. I'll have to check in on the Keto Diet.
This was so informative! Since going on Keto the past 3 months I have not had heartburn. Thank you
Sugar feeds the the symptoms and it makes it worse playoffs sugar that's a problem to.

Me and my brother both got rid of fairly regular acid reflux with intermittent fasting. It wasn't our goal, it just sort of happened.
Was on losec/ 20mg ompezmarole for nearly 20 years. Doc just said if it helps keep using it. Since lowcarb haven't needed them at all
I've been on PPI's forever and I'm 57.
This is so true! Since I changed my way of eating I rarely have heartburn.. when I used to have it practically everyday
Hi, Dr Berry
I am so glad you made another health video. Thanks! ☺️
even as a nursing student I felt proton pump inhibitors could NOT be good for too long... we need our bodies to do it's job
@Anna I don't understand how a hiatal hernia (unless it's huge and causing intestinal difficulties/blockage) would complicate your eating plan.
Congratulations!
Going Keto got rid off my heartburn for good!
Yes!!!
Me, too!
@@KenDBerryMD Hi Dr. Berry. If I stop taking PPIs, will my dementia risk go back down to normal or will it always be higher due to long term PPI use?
My reflux disappeared within two weeks of starting keto. It comes back only when try a pasta again. I never thought I’d experience this
Cutting out the carbs does wonders...as we all find out.
Cutting out one of the healthy forms of foods out of your diet? Yeah, no. That’s a load of bullshit. Healthy carbs are vital for the body to function.
Thank you Dr. B you’re a HUGE gift to humanity!!! I share your videos all the time :))))
Cutting out carbs by 90% and taking Dr Berg’s Digestive Enzyme complex has made a huge difference for me!
Keto fixed it
Excellent information Dr Berry! Thank you sir.
It is scary to think of stopping Omeprazole because I have Barrett's Esophagus. I am hoping keto will help.
Great info!! Any thoughts on people who have hiatal hernia? Would love some advice!
