Welcome to our first channel's first video! We have a bunch of videos planned for the upcoming weeks designed to teach you more about brewing coffee with various methods like an Aeropress, French Press, and Chemex. We will also be exploring experimental and fun ways to brew coffee at home without all the fancy equipment.
For our first video, we thought we would explore one of our favourite pour over coffee drippers, the Origami Dripper. It is an colourful and fun coffee dripper that surprisingly outperforms the traditional Hario V60 that is used by many. In this video, Vince explains his pour over technique with the Origami Dripper and why it is currently used in his daily brews for customers.
Single Pour Brewing Instructions:
Grinds to water ratio: 1:15 (we used 16g to 240ml of water)
1. Fold and pre-heat filter with hot water (remember to pour out the water from your decanter)
2. Create a flat bed of coffee grinds
3. Start your timer and pour water EXTREMELY SLOWLY at the beginning (you should not see anything drip out within the first 10 seconds)
4. Slowly work your way clockwise outwards to the edge without pouring on the filter paper
5. As you push the darker grinds out towards the edge, do a "flush pour" by pouring down the sides of the filter to gently flush out all the residual grinds back into the middle
6. Pour down the middle at a slightly faster pace until you reach your desired water amount
7. Stir quickly from the outside in and let it drain

Love that theory on the blooming phase for the origami dripper. Very cool stuffs!
thanks! we are planning to do a more in depth video on why we don't bloom and our single pour technique.
can't wait to try this method out
Let us know what you think!
I’m a fan of simple methods like this, just a quick question. When you stir at the end are you stirring the coffee bed or just the water on top? If it’s just the water on top would a swirl also work? Thanks!
Sorry for the late reply!! It's been a busy holiday for us, completely forgot about the comments section here >.<
Firstly, Happy holidays Ghassan Fatoohi!
Secondly, GREAT QUESTION. THIS IS A QUESTION THAT ISN'T ASKED ENOUGH!!!! The stirring for us is to guide the water in a quick motion but at the same time I reach to the bottom to make sure it hasn't settled completely. If it has settled completely then your pouring wasn't stead and probably either slowed at the end or your grinds are way too fine.
The idea is to start at the top to create that whirlpool finish, but work your way down to loosen anything that wants to sink. This gives it the last "lift" so the water can be exposed to the grinds as much as possible on the way down! I hope this helps!
@@TALESCOFFEE does the whirlpool helps with a faster drawdown?
Can do ir a video with different tecniques and tell us the difference of flavor? And a question origami is verter than v60 or malita can tell us why or what difference ? Thnks for this videos
Great video, waiting to get my Origami dripper as well. You might want to invest in a clip on mic for future videos, that would remove some echoing and background noise.
Yeah, we are looking into the clip mic. We have tried a ton of different mics .. I don't think our audio got any better after this one though we've been through three other mics .. AHAHAH It's just for clip mics I have to match the audio and sometimes I forget to turn it on. I will definitely be getting on in a week or two. So my next video shoullldd (assuming shipping isn't delayed) have a clip mic audio!
Awesome video....Thanks very much Vince ....What’s your technique for metal drippers like Able kone ..In my experience all the stirring and other pour techniques applied to other brew methods tend to make a muddy brew . What’s your take ?
THANKS! Yea I have, but generally I don’t stir after a quick pour anymore, instead we focus on setting the grinds and pouring the water in a way that replicates a stirring effect.
TALES COFFEE Awesome....by the way what’s your tip for French press coffee and besides the origami what’s your current favorite dripper ?
First? First comment! I'll say more when I finish. 😘
nice, why did you guys choose to use the V60 filters instead of the kalita filters?
We actually used the Origami filters, but we do like the V60 filters better than the kalita filters. We personally think kalita filters are better for larger batch sizes.
How would you adjust for 20 or 21g of beans? Will the technique still work in that size dripper?
Also, are you using same grind size in chemex, or going coarser for the thicker filter?
Yups we definitely go with the same size dripper even for 20/21g of beans. The origami is amazing for that.
For chemex we definitely go thicker. Mostly because we’re pouring from higher and the dripper has less air passing through the walls so it has a naturally slower flow rate!
I really start loving this method, can I ask can you share maybe what is the grind size on an Comandante grinder. how would you compare the result against an regular V60 and an Origami with origami paper filters thank you.
Hmmm I’m not too familiar with the commandante. I heard it’s around 18 clicks? >.< hope someone else can correct me but that’s what I’ve seen in the comments!
。
As for the paper .. hmm the origami is a bit thinner actually! So it does have a better flow but it’s also more gritty so I feel like it causes more agitation and absorbs the micro fines better then the hario one!
@@TALESCOFFEE 18 clicks seems fine for the hario paper filter. I use 16. Of course it depends on the coffee. The comandante is the gold standard of hand grinders. You should get one.
Can this method be used as well for a v60 02? Also is this origami the 1-2 or 1-4 size?
Hey sorry for the delay, this most definitely can be used for the v60 | 02's I actually use that in my shop myself ^.^
Personally I only like to use the origami small size (1-2) I'm not a fan of big brewers myself. I find the 02 v60 a little large actually, but the 01 is a bit too small, so I rather brew with the 02 at the shop over the 01's
I want to see siphon in the future 😘
the siphon video is actually already in the works! watch out for soon.
love origami dripper
Definitely my favourite dripper! It looks the best IMO and it has the best cups!
Well, which is better? Origami of Hario V60?
IMO. Origami Small > v60 02, but equal to the 01
That one hair is shooting it's own video on the side
Ahahahahaha oops!
