I use both the V60 and Wave papers. The Origami with V60 tfilter is slightly brighter than brewing with a V60 cone. With Wave filters I think it's a lot similar to Kalita Wave brewer with complex cup as it cools down but the Origami brings out more body and more balance vs. Kalita has more tea like body. Kenyan coffees can be exceptionally good with Kalita Wave and something like Costa Rica honey, natural and anaerobic processed comes out beautifully with Wave filter in the Origami.
I love Origami but for me I don't find big differences between Origami filter and V60. But one thing i found it interesting is when I change the paper filter hario and kalita wave, the taste is different in term of body and sweetness of the coffee. Now I change my coffee paper filter to ABACA TH-2 for medium roast bean and I found that my coffee is flavorful compare to Hario. So I'm wondering whether the design of the filter or the paper. But of course the design effect the flow rate. To me personally I just change the grind size according to which filter I wanna use. :)
I have Hario V60-1 and V60-2. There is difference between these two - same coffee, same grinding size but different brewing time and different taste - interesting and fun. So I was thinking about month or so that I will buy origami and kalita drippers but only for slighty different preperation between these drippers (V60, Kalita, Origami) - more options is more fun for me and Im also thinking to get Fellow Stagg XF Pour-Over Set its not a cheap but why not, I will have a nice collection.
@@martinkostelansky5321 both tasted very good but dont know the difference I tasted it month ago so I dont know if it was more/less acidm better body or so... :)
Loved the helpful and objective review! I wholeheartedly agree with your points. The Origami dripper is pretty & comes in lots of fun colors, but it’s fragile & not ergonomic. There’s no handle, the base is sold separately & since the bottom is so narrow, it can easily tip over when placed standing up.
TLDR Aesthetics: 9/10 Usability: 6/10 Pros: It can use several types of paper filters, both, Kalita and V60 Cons: It is difficult to say whether the change in flavour profile is absolutely down to design. Extra cost for holder $$
Yes it is fragile. I already broke one lol, I am on my second now. Interesting that Kalita Wave filters are slower, I thought that because of the flat bottom, the distance that the water travels from the top of the grounds to the bottom is shorter, so I thought it would be faster. I have not done a side by side comparison, but I feel like I got more flavorful brews using the cone shaped Origami filters. This is a great video and answered many of my questions, however I wish you included some recipes or brewing tips
I have Kalita Wave (small) and Origami (small). I do prefer the coffee from Origami with Kalita Wave 155 filters, it is brighter and cleaner. The Kalita Wave serves now as a travel brewer thanks to practicality of steel construction. I have tried Cafec T90 and V60 filters. Kalita and V60 work the best in terms of balance.
@@SureFeelsGood You mean between the drippers or between the filter papers? Nowadays I prefer the Origami papers with Origami dripper (the papers are manufactured by Cafec). With Kalita dripper you can only use Kalita Wave papers.
Guys!!! Greetings from Costa Rica!!! Love your videos , more than welcome to come here and make all the reviews you want. I assure there is plenty of coffee and regions for u to enjoy jaja!!
thanks when I first saw the brewer I also thought it was not that practical because of the lack of handle and removeable base. Now before getting any new dripper a 1 piece construction (with handle) is a must because personally it just makes handling and cleaning a lot smoother. I dont think im missing out from skipping out on this dripper.
Already try to use origami dripper hario v60 01 paper filter , i do agree with you using v cone shape paper filter bring more acidty, bright and clean, i do prefer to use v cone paper filter than kalita wave paper filter because when using kalita wave paper filter give a dry aftertaste. Btw thankyou for sharing with this video 😁
got my Origami yesterday. Loving it so far. I've been using V60 and for larger batch, Chemex. I'm using Hario papers although my package came with the Origami's company paper. I'll try it down the line. Origami dripper is beautiful and I find it much easier to brew on due to slightly larger opening. Plus it looks gorgeous! dig it!
I did the most careful a/b i could with a plastic V60. I feel like the origami definitely produced a slightly different flavor. I preferred it; seemed to have a slightly rounder sweetness and brighter acidity. My V60 brew felt just a little "flatter" in comparison. I'll of course have to do more tests though ;) Anyone else feel the same?
I’m also use origami same color with both types of filter, and it’s was cracked by a dog. My opinion origami dripper is in the middle between V60 and Kalita and you got an option to play with both types of filter so the most important thing is what coffee do you have or you like then make a difference good cup of coffee by playing around your dripper. ✌️
I have a Kalita Wave 155 Ceramic Dripper not that worthless metal one that does not have the same drip rate as any of their others and use Kalita filters. There's a hack where you can drill the holes larger. Otherwise my dialed in Moccamaster KBGV Select is my go-to. All these oddball ways of making coffee are for when I'm in the mood to do it. ☕😎👍
The best are V60 Japanese brown filters. Tried everything, even the sibarist filters. Have been testing it for 1 year now and it has much cleaner and sweeter than the regular filters and regular v60 dripper.
when visual looking is more important than practicality. So as the vid summarized; it's a V60 with a little bit bigger hole. with no holder. and testing by no mean of scientific results. still wonder why its brew had more body than the Kalita as Kalita has more immersive brewing character. anyway, great sharing. Thx :)
Nice video thanks, at some camera angles I thought this looks like the matt blue colour and I was going to ask, but when I watched it back I realised he said it was turquoise
Nice video guys. It's design really took my attention, but I would like to know how are the paper filters for the Origami itself. I would love to see a cone shape with the waves made for the Origami. Would that be possible? I hope so, otherwise I wouldn't buy the Origami
Better body comes from better extraction. A fast dripper can only extract the acidity, which dissolves easily when adding water. Sweetness comes out the next! My favorite drippers are Kalita Hasami & V-60.
Sorry for the late add. Got my Origami Air a week ago. I'll add this: Faster flow rate (in the Origami) means you can grind finer, which opens up more possibilities.
I don’t think there’s any noticeable difference in taste for a normal guy like me. It’s a choice between a good looking but expensive dripper or a very cheap $7 Plastic V60. Whatever works for you.
Did you use the same grind size for all of the brews ? Does it affect the flow rate to use Kalita 185 filter in the smaller Origami rather than in the larger one like here ?
It's the one from our partners at Loveramics. It's Caramel Egg cup: www.loveramics.com/collections/egg/products/egg-150ml-flat-white-cup-saucer-granite-carmel-gunpowder
How did you break it? Perhaps the third one will last ages 😅 We mostly use our plastic V60 in the office - it doesn’t look as good but is unbreakable 💪
I can’t believe you make a comparison without talking abot grind adjustment. Is it the same grind size for all four brews? Would it make a positive difference if you change it? If there’s more acidity in one case, will it help to adjust the water’s mineral composition? This is a strange and not so useful review.
With a Kalita and V60 at home, im afraid I dont find may reasons to spend 30€ in further drippers, and believe me, I’ve tried to find them everywhere since the origami looks fantastic (love the orange, the yellow and the turquoise).
Gesha beans tend to be of higher quality, which means less bitterness and more pleasant acidity. Origami dripper creates bigger air gap by barely touching the paper filter. This way, the water temperature dissipates faster which emphasizes the acidity of the beans.
@@romantrilo Thanks. Your answer is sweet and helpful. The question was asked when I had just begun to drink and brew coffee for half a month. Although I don't believe I would ask something like that, (because geisha is just good in every way), I'm learning from you.
