A stable pitcher that can throw a high 80s to low 90s fastball up and in and low and away consistently is more effective than a 100 mph flame-thrower with inconsistent control.
I can name you so many horrible pitchers in the MLB, this guy is one incredible talent. even great pitchers have gas can moments and I should know because of daily fantasy and how much baseball just screws you.
When i went to a game he threw six 100+ mph fast balls, resulting in a full count, then threw a 89 mph curveball, everyone was laughing at the dudes timing while hitting
@@tolen1689 arm blowout. Never heard that one before 😂 He will likely tear his rotator cuff or have tommy John in the next 2-3 years at this rate. You can only throw that hard for so long.
It's simply the hardest thing in any sport. There is no doubt. You could give 500 non-pro players an AB against this guy, I doubt any of them make contact, let alone a hit.
Still waiting for MLB to start measuring pitches 10 feet from home plate instead of right out of the hand. Then we’ll see how fast these guys are actually throwing lol.
@@launchbase4944 He has this pitch that Twins broadcast calls a Splinker. A splitter/sinker combo. I think its the 90s pitch the creator here was calling a curveball but im not 100% sure.
Not really. Nowadays pitchers come back perfectly fine after TJ surgery. Many up and coming top recruits literally get the surgery before even getting to the pros. With today's medical advancements TJ is a non issue for pitchers. Hell a lot of pitchers actually throw even faster after because that ligament isn't gonna tear again. And fyi it's basically guaranteed he's gonna need TJ at some point in his career. I'd be willing to bet it'll be within 2 years
love the content, really nice video. question: you noted that when a batter fouls a ball straight back, it means they barely missed strong contact (not your exact quote, but that’s the idea) i played baseball through my childhood, til i was 20 years old i watched many hundreds of games, if not a couple thousand full games i heard announcers say that datum over and over and over again it seems completely false to me it seems more like that the batter *FELT* they just missed it, probably because no reverberation through the bat, a nice fluid swing, etc but…it seems like, in terms of physics, *that’s* the foul ball indicating they almost completely *missed* the ball after all, foul straight back seems to mean the batter made the *least* amount of available contact and on the other hand, the foul ball that made a lot of barrel, just barely made it behind the netting of home plate, and may have actually stung the batters hands…*that’s* the one they actually just missed, even though the contact didn’t *feel* great thoughts?
It can mean they just swung under it, but looking back, I may not be entirely correct about that in the video. Most likely, he was a bit late to the pitch, so didn’t barely miss it, but honestly, even making contact against a pitch like that is pretty impressive.
Pretty sure he's referring to the timing. He had really great timing on the ball just the location of the bat was low. When you're late it'd foul off way right as a righty hitter. If you look at the side view of the pitch he met the ball at a pretty good time. He was ever so slightly late but had he actually locate the bat a little higher the most it'd go to the right would be the gap between CF and RF. That hit squared would have been a gap shot
It definitely moves like a hybrid pitch. Some of them have more run, others have more sink. I went with splitter because that’s what baseballsavant said.
It’s still a splitter, it can’t be both. They wouldn’t make a completely new pitch type for only 1 guy that throws it. Splinker is purely a nickname, similar to “The Airbender” for Devin Williams, it’s still a changeup
@@asimm03790 it’s heavily pronated change up which is basically a screw ball that’s literally how they used to teach people to throw them at first , pitches have pitch names for a reason like pitch grip & pronation people called devins pitch a change up because of the ways its gripped Duran doesn’t grip he’s like a splitter
@@Christopher-tayso you realize you still probate a changeup right? And screwballs have different grips than changeups, that what makes his a changeup and not a screwball. Duran most definitely grips it like a splitter as well, it’s not as wide as most in the league, but a splitter nonetheless
@@asimm03790 I never said they weren’t pronated why do you think I said “heavily “ also I said that’s how they would teach people to throw them at first like when they’re learning how to throw it , I’m confused if you have trouble reading or your just being intellectually dishonest . Lastly you don’t know that he “definitely “ grips it like a splitter because he’s never publicly shown his grip all we have is what it looks like coming out the hand or in the glove and it’s obvious that his grip is no where near as deeps as splitter. I appreciate your input tho
He will last, but to say he's unhittable, as a lifelong Twins fan is very incorrect. He's blown a fair number of saves, hitters can connect with 105 mph fastball. His curve and junk breaks so hard that it's usually not a strike and often the catcher needs to put his body in front of it. He's amazing and one of the best saves guys, but not the best yet.
He'd be dominant for 2 years get TJ. Be great for 1 more year and then will have other injuries all around his arm. See Degrom for example. Duran would have a shorter shelf life though
@@StupendousSport the reason why they are under the ball is very oftenly because they are late on the pitch. Since all batters have an upward swing path, being late means the bat did not have time to reach the right height, cause you to nick the bottom of the ball.
crazy to say this, but twins pitching is nice. Sonny, Lopez, Ryan, duran, and lets not even mention the nastiest pitcher, brock stewert. Thats another guy whos maybe the most unhittable picher,
Duran calls the pitch a splinker. It’s a modified splitter grip which is closer to a sinker grip than a splitter, but thrown with pressure applied like a splitter. I know it may not say whether or not TJ in his future, but figured it may be worth mentioning if you didn’t know.
People saying he won’t last apparently don’t realize he’s a closer, not a starter. He might get 40-50 pitches a week.
He's also huge! I don't think he'll last as long as Chapman has, though. But he'll throw really hard for a long time!
Not only 104…but 104 tailing away. It’s amazing to me that any player in the big leagues hits 300 anymore. Pitching is simply ridiculous
Not everybody throws like that there are plenty of hittable pitchers for MajorLeague hitters!!!
Didn't take much to amaze you
A stable pitcher that can throw a high 80s to low 90s fastball up and in and low and away consistently is more effective than a 100 mph flame-thrower with inconsistent control.
Mostly only closers throw velocities that high the starting pitchers throw 70-90 pitches in a game usually most of them being in the low to mid 90s
I can name you so many horrible pitchers in the MLB, this guy is one incredible talent. even great pitchers have gas can moments and I should know because of daily fantasy and how much baseball just screws you.
His pitch speeds are broken.
4 Seam: 102-104 T105
Splinker: 97-99 T101
12-6 Curve: 87-90
Unbelievable.
Splinker? Is that the hybrid slider/splitter?
The comment section answered my question. It’s a splitter sinker hybrid
The 12-6 Curve topped at 92 MPH
😂
How do people hit this stuff bro
Even nastier for his arm
Splinker sounds like a pitch that would force me to quit baseball
im glad my twins finally have another johan that can unleash demons
His curve is faster than some pitchers' fastball. Stud.
