Learning the Violin (COVID edition)

- I began when COVID hit the USA...I did a drive-through pick-up 🎻 to finally learn the instrument I’ve always loved! People said it was too hard to learn violin, and that I should just learn guitar instead...but...
It has now been over a year, and I’m still loving it! Here’s the first 6-months of progress 😄
#learninganinstrument #violin Развлечения
im glad someone's finally showing a realistic progress of learning an instrument. i would suggest that you try putting on tapes with your teacher as a guideline to work with intonation. your posture is good
True
Thanks!
But she doesn’t have a teacher-
@@Snowy-oq4ur Yep, I do!
@@Snowy-oq4ur what made you think that?
As a violinist of almost 6 years, I’ll just say that your progress really is quite good, it took me a lot longer to get better with the bow, so keep up the good work👍
Thank you! I hope you’re still enjoying playing!!! I can’t wait to say I’m “a violinist of 6 yrs” - sounds epic. 🤩
I've been playing for 7 years, completely agree!
Does it really have to be _that_ outdrawn? People always say that "to master an instrument, you have to read every book, play for 50 years, travel the whole world, etc" and while I'm fine with doing that when I can (I can't travel the world now, or even get a violin) it just sounds like people on RUclips overcomplicating it, like always. You didn't say that it took you that long, just that you've played it that long, but you brought up time for a reason, so the principle is the same. The piano might be simpler, but I still learned the basics in a day, sheet music the next, and I practiced on an A6 paper (10.5×14; black strings are 10 cms, white are 14: you can draw) when I wasn't in reach of one for the chords. I'm looking into whether there's any variation in older models. So, the difficulty was _extremely_ overhyped, and it didn't take me years, or decades. Years feel a lot shorter these days, but it's the same.
It was mostly mental for me. The violin might be more about muscle memory, the right amount of pressure, or whatever. But it can't just be _so outdrawn!_ And like any instrument, how it looks like doesn't match the difficulty. There are 88-keyed pianos, but they follow the same 7 natural notes. The beginning might start with A and B, but it's like one of those failed math patterns: it starts with A, and B, but it's the same afterwards.
I am still at the basics on the piano, and it might take me a while to get any further. I am fine with waiting. What I'm not fine with, is treating it like it's impossible, or as if I need 7 years to get anywhere. It's only that much harder!
@@Sh4dowbanned playing the violin is unusual in that it does take a long time to learn it. It takes even longer to master it. I have personally played it for seven years, and I would not say that I have mastered it. However, you are right in that you can make progress quickly, and it does not need to be highly drawn out.
I mean, it is a little sus. At the end her bow arm was pretty good and the position of the pinky was pretty much perfect, I know people that play for way more than 6 months and have a lot worse hand position.
@TwoSetViolin it’d be great if you could react! Give this person some good encouragement to keep going on her violin journey. You’re doing amazing!!
Yess, agreed! ^^ And they are doing great, 100%!
She trained by ling ling
Lmk when it's on ll40hrs, I'll upvote.
Oo I'd love it if they saw this!!! :) But thank YOU for your encouragement - I really appreciate it!!!
Thank you!!
I already started bowing since my first days without pizzicato or anything like that and now I feel like I’m going too fast lol
@Wallie lol me too I'm at fourth lesson and my teacher started giving me vibrato exercises XD
I started with the bowing in the first day too, but my teacher make me do the pizzicato then the bowing
Im going fast too. I started to learn the violin 3 and a half months ago and now I can play minuet in g from bach lol
@@jazminnagy1695 you can’t go to fast just make sure your playing correctly. The violin is a extremely demanding instrument so don’t rush it or you might develop really bad habits.
I’ve been a violinist for 8 years, and I used the bow first too. I liked it better 🤷♀️ nothing wrong with it
I hope Twoset sees this!! We finally have some GOOD REALISTIC PROGRESS from a musician that GENUINELY ENJOYS PLAYING👏
Thanks!! That’d be amazing!!
@bagel9621 No you didn't lel
Pretty interesting that you started by just doing pizz without the bow. This might be helpful for getting a first impression of how the fingers of the left hand have to be placed.
Yeah I think it helped! :)
In school my teacher taught me like that. They do that in concert Orchestras but I'm they advanced one so you start bowing there
My teacher only let me pizz for the first half year, didn’t even teach me how to hold the bow. 😅
@@yuluvii same!
actually this is how most people are taught in school
I've been playing the violin 8 years and I didn't improve as fast as you, you are doing great!!
Oh thank you!! I really appreciate the encouragement. It's such a difficult instrument!
@@CourtneyLucien It really is but with effort, patience and practice you will see the results (I don't know if I said it correctly)
Yes, I totally agree!! :) I'm excited to keep getting better!
Same, it took me a whole year to learn twinkle twinkle little star lol
I’m at 8 years as well! I’m still garbage at playing, but I want to make my old instructor proud, so I’ll keep it up!
As someone who’s been playing for a rough 11 years and is the daughter of a violin teacher, that’s actually really impressive progress, especially considering how bad violin always sounds when you first start out, it’s not an easy thing to start playing 😂 your bow hold is especially amazing to me I couldn’t hold the bow so well for a long, long, time after starting. You sound awesome keep practicing and have fun!
As a violinist, this makes me so happy! Make sure to practice bow holds, and (though it’s a bit controversial) I suggest getting some tapes for your 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers. Practice hitting pitches with those fingers and being on the tapes to train your ears and muscles!
But you gotta give her credit on the straight bow.
This is my 8th year playing violin and I’m in 3 orchestras.
@@benjaminlewis5057 Definitely! I was very impressed with that. I had trouble with a straight bow for years
Thanks!! I do have tapes on the fingers, but need to be more accurate. Re: bow holds- are you suggesting trying different ones?
@@CourtneyLucien Yep! There are many different ways to hold the bow; the way you’re doing it is one of the most widely used, but keep in mind that it’s okay to not be super ridged with it.
I noticed that you seem a little tense with the bow, so make sure to relax your fingers!
Your playing is beautiful for someone so early into their journey, I’m almost jealous! Keep it up
Thank you for this!!! Yes, tension is common for me -- always working to relax more. I'm excited to keep progressing now - it's pretty cool to have people cheering me on from afar!! :)
that's super cool! you improved so so fast and seemed really enthusiastic and that makes my heart happy because i am a violist. although not a violinist i understand how cool it is to learn an instrument💜 i wish you the best of luck with your musical endeavours!
Thank you!! I've always loved the violin, so it's exciting to finally start to learn it!! It's SO difficult, though...but your encouragement makes me feel motivated to keep going! :)
This brought so many memories of when I started playing 4 years ago.
You're posture is so good! Nice job.
Try experimenting with how fast you move your bow to see how that changes the sound. You could also try moving where you place the bow between the finger board and bridge
Thanks!! I appreciate the tip!!
I’m so glad someone’s actually showing a realistic process. You’re doing amazing!
-violinist of 4 years :)
I was expecting it to be like “one year of playing the violin”
Followed by the Mendelssohn concerto.
😂 not there yet!
I love watching the masters play, but there's something special about watching beginners learn, and the first sounds they create.
I started playing my viola during virtual school and it was hard for me to pick up on, I even thought about quitting after fifth grade but I’ve been playing it for the past four years, and I love it so much and now in an orchestra that’s for my entire state. I’m proud of how far I’ve come❤ to anyone who read this keep up what you love no matter how hard it gets
i’ve been playing the violin since i was 6 and this is really good i love how you just are so positive. violin can be really frustrating sometimes
Reminder that beginner progression depends on a lot of things, including time spent practicing, quality of practice, prior musical experience, age and hand-eye coordination. Take it slow :)
well said :) slow is the way to go!
I like how this is an accurate depiction of learning the violin :)
As a violinist this is actually great I have been playing for about 3 years and I love to see this! ;)
You're doing great! I hope you enjoy the violin for many more years to come!
Thank you! I have recently taken a few months off...which saddens me, because I do love it. Your comment is inspiring me to go back to it!! I'm a year into it now - I can't stop!!
No, don't stop!!!
My teacher taught me how to bow since my very first lesson. Now I’ve been playing for three months and I already played Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles
where's the sheet music???????
@@noneofyourbusiness420 you can find it online or RUclips tutorial
I’ve been playing since I was 5 as of since I posted this comment I’m 13 turning 14 on Feb 1.
I’m in three orchestras and I’m learning ruclips.net/video/NBvjFhwCZAE/видео.html as a private lesson piece.
@@benjaminlewis5057 Wow that’s pretty cool. I started when I was 15 and now I’m turning 16 this month
That's awesome!! :) I hope you're enjoying playing, too!
As a 14 year old who’s played the violin for 8 years, you’re doing a great job!!! Make sure to keep good habits and form, it’ll come to bite you later!!!
Essential Elements!!! You can recognize it anywhere!
nice work 😊 i want to learn playing the violin someday too~
Maybe research a local shop (to rent one), and find a teacher!! It's easy to get started...hard to keep going, but if you love it, you'll persevere!! :)
That’s so cool! I loved how apps you were when you got a clean sound from the violin in 1 Week :) so wholesome
lol I WAS very excited :D
@@CourtneyLucien Haha that was clear :) But good job!
Great to see the honesty in these progressions
Nice job paying attention to technique! As a violin teacher, this is really pleasing, so many adults ignore technique.
as a violinist who had played for 1 seconds. This is very good!
Why is she playing La Cygne at 1 month wot
Also, good job. For a beginner you have great bow control and form.
I would recommend trying to relax a little more and start trying vibrato. Look up some videos for help
And you should totally watch twoset violin for fun and for the occasional music theory you’ll learn.
Edited because I can’t stand not being able to tell music apart.
That’s not meditation. That’s saint saens the swan.
Thank you! I'd love to learn vibrato soon. I picked up both meditation and swan because I love the songs...but I knew they were above my skillset at first. Since this video I've played the swan hundreds of times! and it gets better every time :)
@@Sophie-gr1sd LMAO YOURE RIGHT
smh I can’t even tell music apart
I started playing violin last year (about 11 months ago) and I love it so much ❤
I do it every day at school, I have lessons Wednesdays, and I am also taking a youth orchestra at my school mondays.
Music was required year 6 and I chose orchestra and violin and I’m doing it next year (7th) too even though it’s not required. It’s my favorite class. When I grow up I want to do it professionally. I also play piano too and have been for 6 years
So awesome. Music is the universal constant.
Most accurate one I've seen till now...
Keep going.. 👏👏👏
Good for you on picking up a new skill in these trying times! If you keep working, I’m sure you’ll get far. I’ve been playing the violin for three years now, and I can say it has been worth some of the long hours of practice. Keep up the good work and go practice!
😆 🤣 😂
Girl I feel you!!! I went through all that in my years of playing.
Keep up the good work!!!
I did this with the piano during COVID quarantine! This is so cool! Love the evolution of the skill.
The swan is my favorite song!!! I love hearing it, and playing it on my cello.
Inspired!Amazing Determination,and progress!
You're doing amazing so far! Keep it up!
As someone who’s been playing the violin for around five years now you’re doing great keep it up I’d also recommend putting tapes where the fingerings are as that can help keep the notes in tune
i just peeled off my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd tapes😅
Excellent posture I must say, I regret not valuing it as much as I do now back in the day
As a violinist for 11 years (im 13) you are doing great lucky u have motivation
the transformation of your bow hold is amazing
Such a remarkable violin sound evolution! Congratulations 😊
Thank you for the encouragement 🥰🥰 oh myyy i want to learn again and do what i love 🥰🥰🥰
Nice job! I love seeing more people try to learn the violin :)
that perfect pitch!! im so glad of you ❤
I’ve played violin for over 7 years now and I say good job!! You’re doing great
As a cellist, your progress is great!
AWASOME!!
I wish I can learn instrument too, looks amazing 😍👏👏
Your technique and posture is absolutely wonderful! You look like you've been at it a lot longer!
I’m glad to see some realistic learning standards!! I’ve been playing violin for around 5-6 years and it still can take months for me to get a song down.
Good progress! Keep it up 👍🏻
I’m a violinist. I loved the work ethic. You made great progress all by yourself on the hardest instrument in the world to learn properly.
As someone who's been playing for 4-5 years, this is actually really good progress! And I also love how accurate this is-
I love this!!
As a cellist I'm in love with this short- please keep going you'll be a wonderful violinist!
Keep going!! I'm cheering you from afar 🥺💞
cool to see this trend done with actual real progress!! keep practicing you're sounding great :D
This is so amazing to see!! Ive been playing for 10 years now, and this brought back so much nostalgia. I started with pizz too! You're doing wonderful, keep up the hard work ^^
As someone who is a violinist of 3 years (I've been playing since 3rd Grade) she made a LOT of progress for a beginner. Can't wait to see you grow in it. The violin is one of the most beautiful instruments ever I hope you stick with it ❤
I really love this because you can see a huge improvement, but it's realistic. Set other ppl up for success with realistic expectations
Great job!! Your progress is outstanding and I saw the 4th finger and literally gasped...
you keep practicing and it goes so well
New world symphony is one of my first music !! I love it
this gave me inspiration to try my dream of playing violin still in my twenties. i've always felt like to be a major you should start from a very young age, you prove me i was wrong. Age is just a number. thank you, and keep the work!
Ohmygod this looks like fun😍😍I have a violin all these years brand new!!!!
I’ve been playing the viola for almost five years now, my viola is like my heart. It even feels strange and saddens me to be away from it for long periods on time. It’s hard to believe that I started playing by pure mistake. I’ll never wish to change tho I’m so happy that accident happened :D because now, I have something that I truly love and that I’ll never abandon. Even now, during my winter break, I wish i had my viola here by my side.
This is awesome!
You are a natural!!
Oh thank you!!!
I started playing the cello last summer with a private instructor and then in school once it started. So far I've had three concerts and it's been so fun yet so difficult to learn so fast but I love it.
As a violinist for about 8 years u doing great just remember to practice every day
Oh i love this! Finally someone showing reality. I feel less bad and totally normal sounding like a what I am, a beginner. 🙏
I have been playing the violin for about 4 years and it’s gotten tough at times, considering that everyone around me is pushing me to my limits, especially my parents. I feel like the beginning stages of starting to play the violin was the most memorable, and the final moment I play will also be the most memorable. I hope to keep playing and I promise to myself that I will try hard. You definitely have potential to be great. ❤
I have been playing for over 6 years and your progress is really good
I've been playing for 4 years and I'm so impressed by how straight your bow is!! it took me all 4 years to finally get a straight bow
That's so cool! Good job
love this!!❤
As a person 4 years playing the violin it’s fun to see someone else’s progress
I play the violin, you're super good! Amazing progress. Hope you continue to play.
This is actually alot faster than most progress. Good work lol
i've been playing since i was a little kid and im always so surprised how quick people learn! i spent my first several months playing a shoebox just to get my posture right lmao and to be starting from scratch and taking lessons online- that's really impressive. i found it so difficult to learn when i switched to online lessons and my progress literally plateaued. so good job, and good luck!!!
Glad to see another starting musician from the Covid times! I started learning the cello in the fall of 2021 and have been loving it since then. String instruments are so enchanting and I can definitely relate to the sheer joy of playing an open string with the bow for the first time
I have been playing violin for 15 years and I gotta say you have good progress well done
I starting learning violin in 2019, so I was very Familiar with it during lockdown. I still play violin today going into 9th grade. Violin quickly became a passion of mine within the first two months. I worked hard and it payed off. In 6th grade I got first violin section. 7th grade I got 4th chair. And in 8th I got second chair with my best friend in first. I’m glad you found it as a passion too!
That's great. Keep going!
The fact that you grown so much over the year you’ve played.
Your intonation and sound is really great for just 6 months!!! Keep on practicing consistently and thoughtfully and you could do so so much!!
I’ve been playing for 7 years now and he doing amazing!!!!
Well done! Keep it up! :)
we also put straws in the F hole to help keep our bow straight! helped so much! called them orchestraws!
"Orchestraws" - I love that!!! :D
You're impressive!
I've been playing the violin for 4 1/2 years and you are on the path to greatness you already sound so Good and you will get amazing.
Your bowing is so good for a beginner! I definitely took about a year to get comfortable with it so you should be so proud!! ❤❤❤
Wow that is impressive progress!
Good luck with learning the violin !!! I'm a violinist and I've been practicing for over a year
I’ve been play for almost 2 years!!! It is crazy how time flys by!!!!!!!😅
Now this, this is what I appreciate! And you have a really nice straight bow on the last one, really good job!!👏
I’m 13 (almost 14) and been playing since I was 5 and now Im in 3 orchestras.
Wow, you're out there doing it - I love that!! Thank you for your encouragement! :)
How is i this good. You made me realize were i used to be and i now am at my 4th year. Its a great instrument
I'm 14 and started playing the Viola in the 6th grade, currently in 8th going to 9th. Im also self taught in piano! From what I'm seeing, you're doing awesome!! Keep practicing, I can't wait to see your future videos
