Wow! I had no idea it could do this! After seeing a video on Morphagene, I decided I wanted to do this whole modular thing. A year ago, I started my rack, but on advice from others, built around function and utility first. Now, I'm now 3/4 into my 2nd case, with only an Erica Pico DSP for fx, so... It's time to upgrade. And wouldn't you know it, my vendor is due to receive a bunch of MN gear next week, including Morphagene and Mimeophon, so I'm just getting them both! There'll be just enough room to add the Erbe Verb a month after before the 2nd case is full. I am so excited to finally be getting the Morphagene, it looks like so much fun.
I love my morphagene, it is by far my favorite module. I like the smooth transposition option, but would like prominent intervals (fifths and octaves) to be ‘stickier’. It is sometimes hard to tune a morphagene precisely, especially if performing at louder volumes. I found this was the case yesterday - the subwoofer kept knocking the morphagene out of tune
was a little confused by the instructions but eventually I figured out that you need to tune the original lower pitch note solely with the Я | F knob. So like I hook up my piano and play the lowest C I want to be able to play this sample at, and then with nothing plugged into the varispeed CV, I use that knob to match the correct pitch. Only then do you plug in the CV->atten->varispeed knob and fine tune the atten knob. Hope this helps anyone who might have been confused in a similar manner.
I was what confused too, I found my own method, I don't have the other stuff so I was using Intellijell scales and disting4 (tuner). Don't forget. (uhum... like me) to edit the config file on the sd card(VSOP option!). Runs as a train (sr. Duch . loopt als een trein) ;-) Thanks.
Great! This came at the perfect time, I just got a Rene and have been trying to sequence 0-coast and Morphagene with X and Y channels; this tutorial helps! Looking forward to the resolution of the Qpas cliffhanger.
I notice on my morphagene, it is almost impossible to get the varispeed to stay green or at the actual pitch I sampled at. It’s very finicky about getting it there and staying put. Is this normal?

actually, you know, the more i watch this video, the thing i feel most curious about is how it's possible that sample playback sounds to be at normal speed (around the 1 min mark in the video) when the morphagene's vari-speed knob looks to be at "0" ... how is that achieved? is it in the adjustment of the vsop setting?
Mainly it's the former - to mix the two sound sources and hear them together. As for the playback speed, it looks like we were using vsop 2 (SD card option) which makes the playback forward only, stopping when the knob is counterclockwise.
I have a sample on the SD and when I play it through with the F on green, Morph on counter clockwise yellow, and all pots at noon, the sample plays at a different pitch than the original. How can I remedy this?
Solved this for now by edging back the F to purple/blue (just behind green), then fine tuning with Maths output 2 into varispeed. That said, if there’s a more straightforward way of doing it I’d love to hear!
your original pitch is at around 1 o'clock....imne is at about 3 o'clock....is this normal behavior, or is my Morph not calibrated correctly. or is your not set to bidirectional, VSOP , but VSOP 2. thanks
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC last thing....since ive been pulling the card to make changes, when I pop it back it it it doesn't start to autoload, I press the Shift button. but id say about 60% of the time it still won't load and I have to power cycle my rack. how else can I get it to load without power cycling, or could there be some kind of issue? thanks.
it all depends on the response curve of the expo FM, which on QPAS is not designed for v/oct tracking. it's possible that carefully set input attenuation would result in passable v/oct tracking in some part of the frequency range, but your better bet would be to use unquantized voltage and tune by ear.
Question! You have the vari-speed set in the middle, neither forward or backward. When I do that, I get no sound, or extremely low. so I had to move it slightly forward, and I ended up with a super deep sound. How do you keep your sound pitched right that low. I did get the patch working, generally, but I seem to be missing something. Any advice?
It depends a lot on the pitch of the original recording - if it's already on the lower side then it's going to be REALLY low when you drop it multiple octaves. you could start from original pitch if you're only pitching up within two octaves in your sequence (the farther from original pitch it goes the less "natural" it will sound)

Just whatever works in terms of vari-speed and then fiddling with Maths to get the tracking sounding reasonable? I'm playing with a sample of the Skiddaw Stones, and I seem to have worked, but when I tried the vari-speed at your setting, it was just growls (which had their own attractiveness).
Million dollar question is why doesn't Morphagene just track 1V/Octave keyboard when fully turned up, in the first place. Did not one think that might be a good factory default. I own a lot of MN stuff, but their disliking of fine tuning has always perplexed me. I had to sell the Teleharmonic because I lost patience tuning it endlessly. Morphagene is in my opinion the best sounding Granular device I have ever heard, so it pains me to know how difficult it is to do basic thing with it.
The Morphagene's design is oriented around extending the range of the lower speeds such as on a tape machine, not around multi-sampler type keyboard control. The exponential scale for v/oct tracking was more of a compromise than we were willing to make on that during development. Adding the option was a result of months of additional post-release development time. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Don't know your hardware design or firmware flexibility, but it almost seems like standard CV tracking on a fully dialed up varispeed setting could be an option for the default text file that gets loaded on boot up. I have always envisioned an expanded version of MG where one can splice more accurately, and jump between slices with some accurate rhythm, pitch and direction of playback control. One can always dream:).
What's the real difference between VSOP1 and VSOP2? The manual says VSOP2 is more accurate regarding pitch. What is the benefit of VSOP1 being bi-directional? It can play samples in reverse while tracking v/oct?
Thanks for the video, but why so much fuss to tune the Morphagene? I have one as well as an Arbhar and the Arbar tracks v/oct without any adjustments. Is there a reason the scaling is off, and the 1v/oct needs to be attenuated? Alternatively, one could use a Kenton Pro Solo, adjust the scaling, and use a midi keyboard to sequence the Morphagene.
v/oct tracking was not part of the original design of the Morphagene. As Tony said upon release of the module, "Having the increased and extended range at the lower speeds creates far more interesting sounds then would be possible using the exponential scale required of the 1V/ Octave standard." However about two years after the Morphagene's release we added user editable firmware options including the v/oct option. However because each Morphagene's input responds differently due to parts tolerance and their is no hardware calibration trimmer as you would find on a VCO, we had to ensure that every Morphagene unit would be able to do it, so there is a little bit of setup involved.

Sample is probably rendered at 44.1kHz instead of 48. This will result in slightly incorrect playback speed.

Most likely it's set to vsop 2. Must be 1 or 2 for this to work - it will not work with vsop 0.

Is it possible to tune QPAS and the Radiate independently? there should be a measurable correlation and thus programable. Right?

@@complicitytheory yes, the setting of the varispeed while "tuning" is not relevant unless you want to use the octave indicator lights as guidelines

Since vsop 2 is uni-directional you have more precision (smaller range mapped across the whole knob). vsop 2 cannot play in reverse, however.
