Such a clean rink ...no BS commercial signs everywhere.
I know its a pipedream, but I wish NHL teams would play one game without a single ad anywhere. It would be so cool! too much money on the line though
our society is totally commercialized today. what a difference. The internet is all about ads. Selling us things we don't need just to keep us on the threadmill.
but how did people watching hockey back then know about all the great products they could buy to keep the american economy moving?
After the game I probably watched
Sanford & son, Benny Hill, then
the 3 Stooges at midnight.
Channel 50 in the 80's in good old
Clinton Twp, those were the days!
Good ol' channel 50. Then became Fox 50 if I remember right.
Grew up in Rkfd with a rotor antenna. Could get Chicago and Madison. Friday and Saturday late night tape delayed Badger hockey.
And Sunday nights all the British comedy shows.
Is that what ended up being UPN50? Maybe that was farther north where I’m at
@@playdiscgolf1546 yep
After Benny Hill was Cell Block H I think, then Night Gallery with Rod Serling of Twighlight Zone fame.
My favorite Hawk era: no ads on the boards, the smaller hawk logos in the center ice area, NO foghorn, just that lovely screeching siren, no shadows on the ice, Tommy Lysiak with no helmet, Big Al and little Denny, etc etc : TY again skiffer for putting this up, i was at this game as well :)
Yes, indeed. The Chicago Stadium was an incredible place to go. The lighting, the smell, the acoustics, the sketchy AF 'hood for parking.
Fond memories. I've been to 2, maybe 3 games at the United Center, and I won't be going back. It's like a Nuremberg rally for the National Anthem and then a loud and crappy Disney event in a cave with some ice hockey mixed in. For anyone who lives west of Chicago, it's easy to get to the Rockford Metro Center to see the Ice Hogs for a great price.
I love the video of these two commentators. They look like guys from the Chicago Outfit of that era.
them and the islanders were the last to not have ads on the boards
Don't forget the 2 line pass!
When a less talented team could play solid D and still have a chance to win.
@@ronadams681 and the rocket snapshot from the blue line.
And Tony O in net 😊
How awesome to hear the great Bruce Martyn. Miss that voice. Thanks for the upload.
Sounds exactly like Mickey Redmond for the wings.
I see why you like it, to me, it's very much the style of the great Danny Gallivan. No one has ever been quite like him.
I like it better when women call the games😂
@@sportsfix6975 lol
@@brokenelectronics3665 Bob Cole was great in his prime "Ohhhhh Baby!"
These complete game videos are such a treat...thanks for sharing them!
These guys couldn't compete with modern NHL players/teams, yet somehow, I enjoy watching this era more than today's professional hockey. I am not entirely sure why, but I know the white boards, free of advertisements, makes a big difference to me. I know that sounds like a trivial reason, but it means a lot to me.
Thanks for the upload!
Most of these players used to drink booze and smoke after those games at the local watering hole. You're right they'd get blown off the ice by today's players. But these guys were probably tougher. lol😊
@@dmzabo3914 even if it weren't the size and strength of today's players the strategy and commitment to it is so very different.
they're playing dump and chase hockey versus todays russian keep away style of playing. here they are firing the shot at the goalie and looking for the rebound for the goal versus todays pass the puck 800 times until you find the most high percentage moneyball shot
@@timoneil1193 Well spoken, dude
Zero video advertisement on the boards.
Pure Bliss!
Hands down, the best atmosphere in sports. You can't imagine how loud the old Stadium was if you weren't there. Blackhawk regular season games were louder than the (Jordan) Bulls playoff games..
Joe Louis thats the place.
@@zackjay71Great building, great fans. Hawks/Wings was my favorite rivalry. Only got to see one game there, in '89. We drove down & got standing room tix outside (standing room at JLA was great, closest to ice of anywhere I've been) Kocur & McGill fought early, the Hawks scored three times late & won 5-3 - Adam Creighton scored the game winner.
Lol, best atmosphere in Sports? 🤣 Only if you limit "in sports" to Burgerland.
But compare it to the loudness of a european football match. Especially one between two teams with a 100+ year rivalry (something virtually unknown in Burgerland, were "rivalries" start and stop due to players and only last a few years). Something like The Eternal Derby in Serbia, Inter vs. Milan, Real vs. Barcelona or anything in southern europe like Greece. THEN you will understand what a great atmosphere in sports truly is - and we don't need a PA or a LED Screen for pathetic "Make some Noise" and "Clap your Hands" calls either.
@@ShadowAngel606 European football cured my insomnia...thanks mate
@@imandan1966 Yeah because muricans got no clue about it.
But don't worry, i think the same about American Handegg or as how i like to call it: Rugby for weak Pussies.
Home team wire white sweaters. Thank you for posting. Hawks, best uniforms in hockey.
Should also mention the old Chicago Stadium, a most intimidating rink for visiting teams to play in, particularly when the crowd gets into it.
@@alwillk😂😂😂
Tied with the Winged wheel
I have to say my choice would be the Blue jerseys of Toronto Maple Leafs. An I'm not even a Toronto fan. Let's go Pens.
Like the sweaters the Leafs wore in the 70's.
Deny was always worth the price of admission.
Which at this time was $4 for 2nd balcony.
Beer was 90 cents.
I was 19 and went to every game.
My Mom would give me $10 bucks when I'd go to watch the Pittsburgh Penguins in those days. $5 got me in the civic arena and the other $5 I could get a nacho & pop plus a sm. souvenir. Baby stick or a team pennant. Man the cool NHL stuff I had hanging in my room. My buddy and I would play floor hockey in the kitchen on our knees . And we would spray pledge furniture polish on the floor so we could slide all over the kitchen floor. The doorways were our goals. With a homemade tin foil hockey puck. We played for hours man. Thanks for the trip down memory lane .
Its pretty great how either team's uniforms haven't changed.
Except the ad patches.
@@bartsanders1553 Blackhawks don't have an ad patch. They have pride and honor tradition unlike the Dead Wings.
@@HeadlessZombie1991 Hey, that's dead THINGS, to you, buddy😂

Original six battle , the two best jerseys in sports and Bruce Martyn on the mic……..life is good.
Eric Vale, the last Red Wing to wear #19 before Stevie Y came to town and saved the franchise.
I love this Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings rivalry
Thanks for your post. It is great to hear Bruce and Sid once again. I didn’t see this when it aired because I was overseas serving in the Air Force. Always enjoyed hearing games on Armed Forces Radio but don’t recall ever hearing a game with the Wings.

Wayne Messmer singing the Star Spangled Banner is timeless
Harvey Wittenberg with the goal announcements. This was a great era in Blackhawk hockey.
Grew up in NJ in the 60’s and 79’s and was a Boston Bruins fan because of Bobby Orr. Every Sunday night the Bruins seemed to be playing and it was so comforting to listen on my little transistor radio under my pillow to the games.
It was the same radio that fit into the palm of my hand that I’d listen to the World Series in grade school when all the games were played during the day.
To re-live those days would be my idea of heaven.
Your channel is great! Thank you for posting these!
Skif is the best.
Thank you for posting these !!!
Classic memories. Bruce, Sid and Stefan let’s the first shot in five hole. Thx for sharing.
I never see this era of hockey online. It's never in compilations, which all seem to give the impression the NHL began in 2002. Maybe I just never looked hard enough but it feels rare to have a whole game like this.
This is a real gem. Awesome post!!!
This is amazing! I'm 45 and a Wings Fan since days of Yzerman, Oates, Probert, and Klima. The Jacques Demers days. This team is completely unrecognizable. The only player that I really knew was Greg Stefan. The station ID shows WKBD TV50 Detroit. But the announcers are not Dave Strader and Mickey Redmond who I remember fondly.
Things that jump put to me immediately. No ads on the boards. The goalie crease is a straight box. I don't think I see a net covering the spectators. Lots of guys playing without helmets! Yikes! The game moves a lot slower mostly because of the old 2-line pass rule and also because hockey players today are a lot faster skaters. Notice how skinny the goalies were? Tony Esposito is wearing a very old style goalie mask. Funny that nowadays we don't even think of it as a goalie mask, but as the Jason Voorhies mask.
Nice video. It's a gem!
You might not remember the days of "Darkness With Harkness" or when the Red Wings were commonly referred to as the "Dead Wings" or the "Dead Things".
I do remember that moniker, however it was more a reference to the past because back when I was old enough to watch the Red Wings were a playoff team (usually) and after they won the cup in '96/'97 we never looked back.
Adam Oates for me is Boston Bruins, detroit is yzerman federov ciccarelli etc
@@KarlPedal-qu7hu right! I was actually very bummed that they traded Oates. I thought he was awesome! Fedorov and Cicarelli came in the 90s.
Loved this replay from long ago. What a treasure to rewatch and hear the old time game.
Watching old games makes me miss the two line pass. The game was played more east-west which I like. Also helps control the speed of the players.
That '82 playoff run remains a great memory. I just wish it could have included beating a less talented VAN team.
Richard Brodeur was the difference in the 82 series.
Absolutely true.@@romanm9718
The Canucks with horrible uniforms!
@@arcray12 Ahh yes, the Halloween Costume uniforms!!
Just awesome! Thank you so much for this - really appreciate it!
I would have been listening to this game on the radio. Home games weren’t broadcasted on TV.
Back in the Good 'Ole days before all the commercialized crap and no helmets! Real hockey players that would drop the gloves at any moment!
There are quite a few helmets being worn in this video.
W9nderfull to see this after more than 40 years, respekt to NHL And ice hockey As a game for ever 😎👍💯
Something that used to drive me nuts and I now kind of miss: when the text was displayed on the screen in those day it would sometimes put a little static in the sound. If you had perfect reception it wans't a problem, but nobody had perfect reception no matter how creative you got with foil.😂
Have a look at those non advertised hockey boards. Oh those good ole days right there. 😢
What a goal Uncle Tim at the 44 min mark, that’s for the upload now his grand kids can see him snipe! 🔥
Another winner!!!!! These gems never get old.
5 days before this..the great Randy Rhoads was killed in a plane crash....
FLYING INTO A BARN!
actually..it was into the garage of a mansion...@@arcray12
It was a damn shame regardless.
@@arcray12 got that right...i saw him twice, he was just outstanding,...his LIVE playing was just unreal.
Had no idea Tony Esposito played right handed glove left hand waffle (blocker)
Now THIS is a hockey game. The organ in the background the kind of dark lighting this is such a vibe. I miss it.
Thanks for posting!! Another great game, I'm not a hawks fan, but how could you not love the incredible atmosphere in chicago stadium, i always loved watching the hawks in the stadium. Just wondering do you ever do any video/dvd trading?? I have some games myself and would love to get some old hawks games. I have a list if you would like to take a look. Thanks
The sound of the puck hitting real wooden sticks
It would be so nice to go back to no advertising anywhere on the boards in this day and age.
Hockey Town. Redwing for life.
42 Years ago today .
WKBD Channel 50 was one of the first TV Stations to show Star Trek Reruns every nite at 6pm, when 'Kaiser' bought the rights and aired the canceled show on all their stations as an amazingly bold move to combat the boring 'News Hour' on the Big 3..!! Kaiser is responsible for 'Creating Trekkies' and the re-birth of the Star Trek Legacy. And watching 'The Ghoul' & Froggy on Sat nite was a childhood mainstay, (until Sat Nite Live) and I would stay-up and deliver the Freep at 2 am so I could sleep-in on Sundays...!! Bill Kennedy was also a gem...
It’d be so cool to see some of these old games remastered for HD.
I was just born. Crazy how much the world has changed.
In Erie PA you could pick up WGR clear, the closer Buffalo and Pittsburgh not so much.. Anyway Great to hear Bruce's voice again
Chicago Stadium was so good. You could feel that organ resonate through the steel frame. Held around 18k but you were all squeezed in there. No goal horn, when did they start with that?
So weird to see someone other than Stevie Y wearing #19 for the Wings. So long ago...
For the Red Wings this was the end of an Era of ownership by the Norris family. Pizza magnate MikIlitch bought them and within a couple years transformed them from the "Dead Wings" into contenders.
I remember from back in the day when a Norris family spokesman (may have been Bruce Norris) blamed the then horrible state of the Red Wings franchise on the players.
Bruce Martyn w/ Sid Abel during the "Dead Things" era (pre-Yzerman) on TV50. Fond memories from high school.
I miss the Chicago Stadium...old brick smell and cold no matter what time of the year. Watched several Bulls games (before and after MJ), Blackhawks and even the circus.
Bruce Martyn, one of the main voices of my childhood, booming from the speakers on 760 WJR.
Two line pass😅
I didn't even remember that one!
Classic
True hero is the replay team working away in the background to process the video footage to show the replay live.
I love it right through the goalmouth you don’t hear that anymore from an announcer calling a hockey game Bruce Martyn reminds me of my childhood
TONY O was my favorite goalie as a kid 15 shut outs one year in the 70s
Remember that Bruce's call was also simulcast to 2/3 of the country on WJR
Ted Nolan #12 Detroit Red Wings!
Tony Esposito = NHL Legend! ESPO, ESPO, ESPO
I had a ton of O Pee Chee hockey cards from this season. My mom threw them out. I was 6.
Seen Greg Stefan ay for the Oshawa Generals at Maple Leafs Gardens and he skated the length of the ice and jumped on the marlies goalie (marlies were a Jr A team then) crazy game with fights in the stands
That special era when helmets were mandatory for new-rule players but optional for old-rule players..!!
Wow this is before Yzermans time. Only names I recognize are ted Nolan and Phil Esposito 😊
That's his younger brother, Tony Esposito (a Hall of Famer in his own right).
@@HHSGDFootballJPD alright well damn I'm down to knowing 1 player lol.
Game played 2 days before my birth.. so 42 years and 3 days ago today
The year the Hawks broke my heart in the playoffs by beating my North Stars. That summer we get Willi Plett and in the home opener he chops Greg Stephan down with a two-hander. Good times.
This was the pre-anthem explosion era
I have a hard time understanding how some players dared to play without a helmet. Today they are not allowed to play without a helmet and in a few years most players will probably have face protection.
People are just weaker today. Scared. Afraid of what might happen. Luke warm.
@@jondeer5239 What a low IQ thing to say. Safety is smart, numb nuts.
Sid Abel is only 64 years old in this? Bruce Martyn is still alive?
Ahh the 2 line pass .... memories now
9:37 sounds like the guy who taped this Blackhawks game needed to adjust his rabbit tv antennas! Or put sone new tin foil on them. People over 45 will know what im talking about. lol. Those were the days right?
I was a Pittsburgh kid then (still am at heart) my favorite Blackhawks players were #24 Doug Wilson & #35 Tony Esposito. Speaking of which, look at the tinfoil tape holding that left lower
goalie pad together. Whats up with all that? Tony wasn't broke
That shootout challenge would have been fun to watch ;)
It's odd seeing a game in Chicago without the fans cheering during the Star Spangled Banner
Lol they're sharing one microphone
The Wings' logo appears off-center, due to the patch on the right shoulder. What's the story with that?
I believe the patch was to commemorate 50 years of Norris family ownership.
Lol at how small the goalies look 1:00
⭐️ 💫 ✨ stars and hawks had the fiercest rivalry in sports history glen sonmor interview had to be edited after ciccarellis arm was deliberately broken
does anyone have games 1 & 2 of north stars series 1982?
Would love to see those games!!
The dino cicerelli era
Oh, i also loved when the crowd just wore street clothes; i'm not a fan pf every fan wearing a jersey (or sweater)! I know, im old LOL
Wow !!! pretty much stop watcing hockey in those yrs, Doug Wilson an Ottawa boy,
Tony O with his ancient cobbled up fiberglass mask!
Old time hockey, eddie shore, toe blake.
Players don’t check each other because an injury could cause them to lose money college hockey had fierce checking in this era was more entertaining than NHL
i see their playing dump and chase hockey, its more entertaining than modern day trying to set up the most high percentage shot. they fire the slapper at the goalie from before the blue line and look for the rebound
Good old times..
Portland was 50-22 this year and WHL champions.
Wore it better.
I'm watching a Wings Blackhawks game and I hear the names of many Sabres.
Jody Gage😂
@@chrishanes4150 so good but so slow. In the NHL he couldn't do much. In the AHL he was fabulous.

Sid Abel would be 106 years old today.
1:48 starting of the national anthem.
This looks like an old timer senior citizen beer league Sunday skate, not an NHL matchup 🤣🤣
That’s because whenever you hit someone the way they routinely hit today, the other team’s enforcer(s) would quickly find you and mess you up. Also the regular season had less intensity than the playoffs.
