- Does more expensive mean better? And should you use a motorbike helmet for a car track day?
Wonder no more because in this bonus episode of 'Cash vs Trash' we get an expert to explain.
Thanks to Josh from VSport for helping us out for this episode

In all seriousness, good stuff gents. Details on these builds are getting chewy and have more body then the usual dishes. Having the experts follow up after each episode to give insight on important bits is tip top.
Most important safety feature with any helmet, no matter how much it cost, is to do the chin strap up.
I have seen accidents where folk hadn't and the helmet doesn't do you much good when it comes off mid-accident.
it's worth noting that there are SNELL certified helmets sub $300 which is a higher certification standard than AS/NZ XXXX and is designed for use inside a car for limited track use.
yeah I would like the expert to always say the cheapest thing he would recommend for Marty
FIA Certification is best. Some motorcycle helmets are available with FIA rating which better protect for rotation forces.
Always protect your helmet
And your head
Polish it once a day
Zee German Helmut.
I like how the guy said he doesn't get in anything without a hans device, kinda wish they would have got the clip of him suiting up for the drive home in his Corolla.
As a general rule, my understanding is that if two helmets meet the same safety standard the price difference will be fit and finish, weight and appearance. Paying more doesn't necessarily mean a safer helmet, but it'll mean one which is nicer to wear and holds up better over time. That said, as a motorcycle rider I'm not inclined to cheap out on the only thing keeping my face separated from the tarmac.
Weight is a big deal too when it's going to be multiplied a few times over in a crash.
a better fitting helmet and light weight is a safer helmet.
In a car, certainly lighter weight will help - but we're talking a relatively small difference compared to the overall weight of your head and the bucket. And a cheap helmet can definitely fit as well as or better than an expensive one - getting a proper fit is arguably the most important thing, and why I try not to buy helmets off the internet unless I've already tried one on
" I wont get into any car without this gear"... cut to him getting in the taxi to go home... ( Full gear on. )
*Leaves his gear on when he visits my mum....
That $100 helmet is PERFECT for autocross. Once you start getting into higher speed stuff HPDE/HSAX then upgrade.
"If you have a ten-dollar head, wear a ten-dollar helmet." Bell Helmet's motorcycle advertising campaign from the 1970s. A Bell helmet saved my life in 1973. True story. Spend every dollar you can on a helmet, from skateboarding to motorsports.
i love bell, i have a full carbon fibre one. Had about 5 different ones over the years, most comfy too.
My bike instructor told me that when I asked him about buying gear, thought he was super wise but now I find out he stole it haha
'' Spend every dollar you can on a helmet'' is a very wrong thinking, you should get the safest helmet in your budget, there is so many very safe helmets that are under 200usd/euro
This is the stupidest argument for motor racing.
A $400 SNELL helmet and $4000 SNELL helmet still meet the same safety standard.
The $4000 will offer very little extra strength and the extra money is in fit, customisation, and weight.
@@1one3_Racing cheap ones meet the requirements for the certification. Better helmets exceede those requirements.
He said the cheap helmet is better suited for motorcycles than car track days... Inside a metal box.... Where your head won't smash into the ground..... Motorbike riders need better helmets than inside a car. 💯💯💯
Generally speaking, a motorbike rider will fall from a height of around 1.6 metres on to the ground.
In a race car during a roll-over your head can hit the solid roll bar at around 3g.
I'm using a $2500 helmet in karting, it's way beyond what's required, but better to be safe then sorry, plus it's actually more comfortable then any motorbike helmet i've owned. Please never put camera mounts on your lid either, they are not designed to be there, makes them illegal in any form of motorsport (except some track days). Look at what happened to Michael Schumacher, yes not a motorsport crash, but it was the camera that did the damage through his lid.
My noggin is worth about $300. SNELL rated car helmets and MTB helmets with all the downhill certs are all around that price. This particular expert felt more like he was here to sell something.
SNELL and motorcycle helmets are designed for a hard impact. FIA helmets designed for car racing (at least good ones) are designed for multiple impacts, have fire retardant paint and fire retrdant nomex liners. Buy the best helmet you can afford. You buy a $10 helmet for a $10 dollar head.
When i didn't have my own gear, i'd rent it. Always an option. Find an outfit/business that's well recommended in the groups and use them and you'd have full race spec protection for your races.
I’ve learned the hard way. Definitely spend a little extra in your helmet and get one thats as light as you can afford. Mine feels heavy as a cinder block.
For me, full face is essential, even at the track day and sprint level.
Hi guys, motorcycle equipment salesperson here. That motorcycle helmet is very old, please replace it if you can.
That locking mechanism has been banned in Europe for about 10 years and life expectancy of a helmet is 5 years (specified by manufacturer).
Really enjoying this content. It is a great format, the main video then the 'geek speak' as it were, as the 2nd video. Fantastic concept, I reckon!
I'm a believer in a good helmet. Expensive head, expensive helmet.
A bit of price gouging for car helmets when you can get a fully FIM compliant, MotoGP level helmet for around the 2 grand mark.
Hell, the Arai GP-7 (ABP compliant) carbon helmet (better than that Stilo) is $6k.
That's the point of standards though, as long as it complies to AS/NZS 1698:2006, FIA 8859-2015, ECE 22.05 or whatever a $100 standards approved helmet is just as safe as a $7000 approved helmet (unless they're different standards). Now you could argue your helmet goes beyond whatever the minimum standard is but then without some new standard it's just marketing and unverified claims.
Everything else you pay for is weight and comfort nothing to do with safety
except weight directly correlates to an aspect of safety. Less weight on the neck during a crash is a good thing
@@TalkieT correct, it's a shame this video was so light on actual details around the advantages of less weight in a crash.
That’s not entirely correct. As long as it meets the standard, it means the helmet exceeds the minimum benchmark as defined by the standard. However 2 helmets that meet the same standard may exceed it by a different amount. Standards are minimum requirements, not build specifications.
You've got a fundamental misunderstanding of how the standards work. If complies to the standards, that means it meets the MINIMUM requirements. The 900 may meet the same minimum standards as the 9000 one, but it doesn't tell you what it can actually withstand.
A large thing is lightness, and that's a big deal on your neck in a bad crash.
The Hans device became required in Nascar in the US after the death of Dale Earnhardt. He hit the wall head on and his head kept moving forward causing him to have an internal decapitation. This device will stop that from happening!
Arai helmets are also top quality. I prefer the Simpson hybrid over the hans as i dont have much meat on my collar bones and the hans leaves them sore. Also a few have ended up with broken collar bones from them in a crash
I see quite a few of the rally boys (and girls) wearing the Simpson hybrids. Everyone says they are more comfortable than the standard HANS devices.
I would be curious to know what, if any difference there is between professional racing car helmets vs professional racing motorbike helmets
Internet research here but motorbike helmets are designed for as they said more skid orientated protection. Car helmets are more crush (ie roll overs) and fire prone.
@@JLneonhug Technically they're both designed to meet their relevant standards, usually ECE for motorbike and FIA for car.
Both those standards specify different criteria, such as lateral G forces sustained, top down impact etc. and hence the helmets are designed different, and motorbike helmets standards don't include skid oriented protection, only impact tests (at least for ECE22-06)
There's then things like wind resistance and cooling to consider that standards dont really cover.
@@GoonSmith007 lets not forget that ece22-06 is still not fully in affect. Old testing was more or less the same (impacts and strength). So if your helmet is older that 3 years, it's more or less the same.
In the UK youre not allowed to wear open face helmets on almost all track days, nevermind competitive events
civic drivers need those F1 helmets when that vtec kicks in.
🎤 NOM -3 , AGC off .
Another great vid guys.
The difference is how much money they make off you
The best safety equipment phrase I’ve heard is,
“a $2 helmet for a $2 head.”
Marty & Moogs heads are worth AT LEAST a $10,000 helmet... Us nobodies are worth rental helmets lol
Arai's carbon GP-7 (ABP) helmet is $6k.
@@ChristopherHallett That joke went right over your head didn't it.
And he does mention $10-11k helmets at the end of the video, if you even watched it...
these videos feel like i'm at a Go Kart safety pre race info session where they explain how turning the wheel to the left means the kart will turn to the left, and turning the wheel to the right means the kart will turn to the right...
Its 06h30 on a Tuesday. Goddammit
What is the purpose of that solid black visor thing on the expensive full face? Can the wearer see through it or is it some extreme sun block? (Or blast shield maybe? Lol)
It's also intended to block the sun, but the main purpose is that it's polarized to prevent glare from reflections. Have you ever seen how bright reflections from the sun on a body of water can be? A polarized visor almost completely eliminates that, but if you were to buy a helmet with tinted and polarized visor, make sure to also buy a clear visor to swap it if needed. Most tracks will ban you from driving at dawn or night time with a tinted visor, and if you want to also use the helmet for street use (on a motorcycle for example), too dark of a tint might actually be illegal to run since it's the same effect as tinting the windshield of your car.
It's no different to a dark tinted sunglasses, you can see out of them perfectly fine.
The only time they might pose an issue is during low lighting conditions.
@@wowdogeful so you are able to look through it then? It almost looks like it’s just solid black in the video
Thanks for the info great video.
pretty sure you can have hans posts installed on most good circuit helmets if they dont already have.
Depends on where you are.
In the UK for rallying we aren't allowed to retro fit HANS posts to helmets which didn't come with them, so my nice Peltor lid with built in intercom can't be used for stage rallies any more.
So if I’ve got a track focused $1000 motorcycle helmet designed for racing motorcycles, it’s the same as the first helmet in turns use for the track cars?
i don't think so. If im not mistaken, most motorcycle helmets (snell, DOT approved) are designed more or less in accordance to car helmet testing (impacts). That is, both helmets use the same testing procedure. Only new helmets designed to ECE 22.05 uses tests which simulate more of a motorcycle crash impacts on the head, rather then standard car impacts. So, imho, the salesman is selling a 1000$ helmet when you can buy half that price.
can you use a motorcycle helmet at a track day? Is there any large difference between Motorcycle and Motorsport (car) helmets other than amenities for coms/hans etc?
Yes for the trackday part.
Motorbike helmets are generally pretty good, something like a shoei, hjc or ajv far exceed the tests required for a trackday or road riding.
marty and moogs with muggo
My miata looking at that 7k Helmet like "that thing is worth more than me!?"
$100 *
@@JLneonhug 😭
The real question is... how important is your head?
Track day in car “risk goes up” - more than riding a motorcycle on the road? I don’t think so mate
buy the best helmet you can afford. you only get one head!
i've been expecting you trying to smash em with a hammer or something like that
Just out of interest are Sikhs exempt from this or are they essentially banned from motorsports? Here in the UK they are exempt from helmets on motorbikes due to religious reasons. I think they do have a special helmet option that accommodates them. Not sure if they would meet the standards of motorsport though. Never thought about it till now.
I'd imagine they they wouldn't be allowed to carry a kirpan either, for safety reasons in the event of a crash.
If you do racing without helmet for religious reasons, then it all depends if your religion allows suicide and your country euthanasia.
🤮🤮 I'm glad I walk walk everywhere, saved 5g
Just like your driving attire, Your helmet is worth as much as your head.
7k for a helmet!! Come on boys that carbon stilo is 3500 Max
“Tell him he’s dreaming son”.
That helmet is $5800 USD, it's the ST5 GT ZERO.
$100 helmet for a $100 head...
🚀🚀🚀
Most likely, you dont need a helmet in your car. Unless there is a rollcage or the side pillar is near your head, a helmet is just more weight/momentum on your head for your neck to support during a crash.
That's just fundamentally incorrect. See how much damage you can do to your melon if you hit the door window with no helmet.
@@MrManBuzz I dont believe thats a possibility while my head is attached to the rest of my body, but I see your point and for the most part, it would depend on the car I guess.
@@konholio2 Watch crashes in slow motion, it'll surprise you how much you can still move while wearing a seatbelt.
Brain buckets
Great advice and info ! ( Insert Helmet Joke here )

not going to lie this is getting kinda boring its pretty obvious the expensive stuff is better
There types of videos that you are making now... Not so good.
Freddie Flintoff from Top Gear is regretting he was wearing a Open Face Helmet when he had his accident on Top Gear. His Face completely smashed..
Only idiot's wear a open face Helmet.. just so they can talk to the GoPro.. Full Face 24/7..
