This movie looks awful, but I'll give it a bit of praise and say the monster suit for Cykor looked pretty good. Not that good monster suits could have glossed over all the other problems the movie had.
Naw man, because hear me out…a better cgi monster could potentially make bad acting less noticeable (still no excuse for bad acting, but my point stands); THAT computer generated monstrosity could not be saved by even an Oscar worthy performance from the actors.
Reptilian is actually the upgraded version of the 1999 film. The original version also used cgi, called the monsters 'dragons', and had some different scenes. They were so sure that Reptilian would succeed they went out of their way to destroy every copy of the original cut. The original Korean language version of the first Yongary movie is also lost.
The CGI was bad but the name Yonggari has a nice ring to it and the design and backstory of this Kaiju is above average. I say Yonggari deserves a proper remake or even a shot at a fight with an A-lister Kaiju like Godzilla.
Okay, not to be _that-guy_ but I hate it when reviewers _intentionally_ get things wrong just for the sake of making a joke. Yonggary doesn't just arbitrarily be a "good-guy" for _no reason;_ if he did, he'd be Gamera. No, the Aliens are controlling him with a Diamond-Shaped implant on his forehead, and are forcing him to attack the city. When the Diamond is destroyed, and Yonggary is freed from their control, he doesn't really become _good;_ he just shows that being violent wasn't part of his true-nature. It shows that he's not some vicious, mindless monster; it's how the movie characterizes him.
Because you mentioned the Cinematic wizard known as Tommy Wiseau not even three minutes into the video makes me have a mental image of him as a titan from attack on Titan now. (And how they pretty much made it an effort to bury the existence of the monster suits that were originally made for this movie makes me want to see a version of Birdemic: Shock and Terror but the cost hangers scene has only the audio of the birds and the birds completely removed from the picture.)
I watched this movie back in 2005 when I was still a kid. I watch it because the trailer is on my Godzilla vs Mothra CD. Back then, I used to believe that the CGI is pretty well done and I don't even recall they're talking shit about Godzilla! My friend's Dad and Uncle would sit and watch Sci-Fi channel and I remember seeing this movie not fully understanding what was going on. I was raised kinda sheltered so the giant monsters kinda traumatized me for a few nights. The alien suits were kinda cool though.
My headcanon for Yonggary suddenly becoming a hero for humanity is because the soldier who sacrificed himself ended up merging with Yonggary. His bravado personality took over and since he wanted to be a hero, that's what Yonggary decided to be instead of being a weapon for the aliens.
The first theatre in only Korean version released had more practical effects and for the rerelease, with better cgi when opened, at least that is what I’m told by some of my Korean friends. I really hope that first version.

What's ironic is that Korean films trying to be Western often fail, as seen with this piece of shit and D-War. We also have A*P*E. Snowpiercer bombed at the box office despite heavy critical acclaim and Okja is a pretty obscure film in Bong Joon-Ho's filmography. Ironically, it's when Korean films are not pandering to the West that they become successes overseas, as seen with films like My Sassy Girl, 200 Pounds Beauty, A Moment to Remember, Train to Busan and Parasite (from the same director as Snowpiercer and Okja). In fact, one of the themes in Parasite is of how Korea is becoming more and more Westernised and capitalist. And Peninsula, Train to Busan's sequel decided to be more Hollywood-centric and is seen as inferior to the first and second movies. Space Sweepers is becoming a huge success for Netflix when it's Korea making their own space opera film, even though it's still decidedly Korean and doesn't try to be too Western like Reptilian or Peninsula.
