    Good tips. On the catamaran we also let out a lot more chain after the bridal/snubber has been put out. The weight of extra loose chain acts as primary snubber taking the sudden jolt off when gusts push back. On the snubber you can also use rubber shock absorber.
    For communication we use our cell phone to communicate between person up front and person on the helm, saves all the yelling :)

    It’s a good idea to rig double snubbers on port and starboard cleats ... The anchor bracket is one of the most fragile parts on your boat. If the boat sways, this bracket will be bent. Also when retracting the anchor you should pay close attention to the correct position, I miss that in your introduction. strong winds G

      @Expedition_Tranquilo  2 года назад

      You're right, it would be safer. We figure the snubber and windlass is enough, and most of us do it this way, but the double snubber would add that next level of redundancy.

    Also a good idea to remind people to shorten the dingy painter prior to reversing to set anchor.

    • @Expedition_Tranquilo
      @Expedition_Tranquilo  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, great point! We do that everytime now, ever since - pre-Tranquilo - we reversed and had the dingy painter catch between the rudder and the hull and couldn't steer until Fil jumped overboard and pulled the painter out!

    I like seeing that you're using an anchor ball. I rarely see it these days (in the Med, in Western Europe is a little more common). Good explanation on standard anchor practices. I'd like to add that certain bottoms, and certain weather conditions will require much more rode (scope 7 to 1 or even 10 to 1 is not uncommon with high swell, soft mud, windy conditions).

      You're spot on and yes at times we'd put out more scope if required and space allowed.

    Great tips, follow the same process religiously. Even then dragged a few times on my old anchor until I replaced it with a Manson... everyone says Rocnas are great too.

    Well done! We cruised for 5 years and we soon learned that most cruisers don't anchor properly. We did it exactly like you guys do it including using an ad hoc "range" to see if the anchor is holding and the snubbing line. We add a round of hand compass sights on prominant places (especially lighted places at night) and I made a quick drawing of these in the log. Makes for fascinating reading 40 years later.

      Put a foot on the chain. If it's vibrating, then the anchor is bouncing.

    Quick question why dont you let out more snubber line?
    You hardly have any out??

    Have you ever considered a bridle vs a single line snubber? Utilizing both bow cleats and no rope on the bow sprit, thus avoiding any chaffing.

    • @Expedition_Tranquilo
      @Expedition_Tranquilo  3 года назад +2

      Definitely! We haven't had chaffing as we use chafe protectors on the snubber but yes we certainly have considered a bridle.

  • @FX5067

    Very nice technique. The only thing I would do differently would be to ask your child to stand aft of the windlass while backing down setting the anchor. Smooth sailing.

  • @Captain-Paul
    @Captain-Paul 5 лет назад +3

    Really mixed between those who back down on the anchor whilst on the windless & those who attach the snubber before setting the anchor

    • @Expedition_Tranquilo
      @Expedition_Tranquilo  5 лет назад +2

      Yeah excellent point. We have at times put the snubber on before pulling back to take the pressure off the windlass - particularly where we know we have a good hold, but so many times in marginal or tight areas we have to re-set the anchor that we just pull back on the windlass.
      Mind you if it's forecast to be a big blow and we're going to pull hard to make sure we're really set - let's say 1,600 rpm +, we do put the snubber on before we pull back.

    The Anchor is terrible in weed and grass bottoms, both roll bar anchors Rocna and Manson supreme I would not have on my boat, get and good anchor a Spade or a Spade copy like the Rocna Vulcan or Ultra except the Ultra is stainless so not for me. Put your snubber on the other roller or better a fairlead never with the chain and like a commenter mentions never snig the anchor with the winch have a short anchor hook so you don't have to put on the snubber to snig. Also review how to tie off to a cleat. Cheers "Keep on Cruising" done well so far, always something to learn for all of us, even after 40 years of playing.

    • @Expedition_Tranquilo
      @Expedition_Tranquilo  5 лет назад

      Thanks Peter, great tips. We have tried the snubber on the other roller, but the second roller is too short which makes the snubber rubs against the bobstay at times, so we've compromised by putting the snubber on the same roller as the chain. In hindsight we should have had both rollers the same size.

      10 metres is recommended length for maximum benefit of a snubber in high wind I have a Ultra 21 on our 455 Hanse has never dragged when other’s have Ultra also state after 6 times scope there is no benefit having more

    • @Expedition_Tranquilo
      @Expedition_Tranquilo  5 лет назад

      @@malcolmredshaw990 Yes, we rarely go beyond 6x scope, except with the strongest winds forecast. And yes we have never dragged. Noted on the 10 metres, yes in hindsight fully agree!

    We switched to anchoring from the stern in non-tidal areas. No more sailing at anchor, no more massive snatch loads on anchor rode.

      Never heard of stern anchoring over bow??
      How will this be safe when the bow always wants to point to wind??

    • @raggedyedge
      @raggedyedge 3 года назад

      @@garyhawkesford2253 on a sailboat, the bow does not want to point into the wind. Watch any sloop anchored from the bow...with even the slightest breeze it will "sail at anchor"...in stormy conditions it will do this rather violently and generate severe snatch loads on the ground tackle.

  • @feastures
    @feastures 5 лет назад

    Nice video with good info. But please watch this: ruclips.net/video/FOKVO3JBgDY/видео.html 4x scope could be too short in shallow water. Also the bow roller height should be added to the 'depth'. Then a Rocna 33 doesn't seem to be a 2 steps up (discussed earlier in that link) from the recommended size for your large boat.

    • @Expedition_Tranquilo
      @Expedition_Tranquilo  5 лет назад

      Yes that is an excellent and very pertinant point, and yes bow roller height has a bigger impact in shallow water. Thanks for pointing it out and for the link.
