Great video, sir. Very informative. I just picked up my new 2021 blue Monkey yesterday. I am 63 and have owned many bikes throughout the years. This bike is special. Since picking it up I have felt like a kid again. The same feeling I had picking up my first bike, a Suzuki TS125, back in 1973. Thanks.

Thank you for this video. I'm going to do an oil change on my Monkey tonight. To anyone thinking of getting one - DO IT!!! You won't regret it. It makes me smile every time I go out on it. I also have a Honda CBF1000 for when a speed fix is needed, but the Monkey is my most favourite bike I've owned & I've been a biker for 20 years. Stay safe everyone x

Honda has used the same motors across platforms throughout their history. This little power plant is used in the Grom, the Monkey, the Super Cub and more! Smart move! The history of this engine design goes all the way back to the early days of Honda. It is a larger version of their venerable 50cc motor used in the original Z50s and other bikes from that era (1960s). Fun fun fun

Getting the filler cap back on more easily is fixed by putting the o-ring on the filler cap - leaving it sitting on top of the fill hole like that runs the risk of losing the o-ring or getting it dirty or whatever. If it is installed on the filler cap (above the threads) it will be out of the way and will allow for screwing the cap back on more easily. It really doesn't matter - but it is technically a part of the filler cap - and shouldn't be left just sitting on top of the fill hole. It's splitting hairs - but it is an easy solution to a minor problem.

Simple is the best way to go.
When I do my oil changes I use no torque wrench, no replacing of oil drain bolt washer (I mean the washer that's there can stay for however long), Just keep it simple. That all . Love it!

Also, should always check oil level per the instructions in the owners manual, especially after an oil change. Little sight glass on crank case, stand bike upright, oil level needs to be between the lines in the sight glass.

I saw another vid where they took off the flywheel cover inside the engine cover and discovered quite a bit of grey gunk that could be small filings as well as similar on the internal screen filter so I would think a a more complete disassembly would be warranted on the initial oil change.

  • @bigmick1062

    Just a suggestion...
If you place the oil fill cap O-ring on the cap (above threads) instead of on the fill hole it's so much easier to start threading the cap back on.
    Great video....thanks!

6:15 For the 1st. 600mi. service a good HONDA dealer is not going to just change the oil. They will also adjust and lube drive chain, check and adjust clutch and throttle cables, check all lights and switches, inspect and air tires, check all fluid levels, check for any recalls or updates for that unit, and do a general over all inspection.

Just did my 3rd service today @ 1700 miles and decided to take the clutch case off and check the strainer.... lot of metallic debris in there, I certainly wouldn't wait til 8000 miles to clean it! If you do decide to go and do the full 'clean", just be careful removing the case ( I scratched mine up on the the rearset - which should be loosened to allow removal of the case! )

A couple things. Another guy on RUclips did a 600 mile service and removed his cover to get to the oil slinger and the oil screen. His screen was almost completely blocked full of gunk after only 600 miles! His oil slinger was slap full of metallic debris and worn in clutch debris. It was alarming how much gunk was in these Honda engines after only 600 miles. I would ABSOLUTELY POSTIVELY not go 8000 miles without taking the cover off and cleaning the goo out of the engine as the manual suggests. In my professional opinion as a small engine mechanic, you should probably take the cover off after 600 miles, and clean the screen off and the oil slinger off. After the first cleaning, you can probably go every 5000-8000 miles before having to take the cover off again. Also, the crush washer on the drain plug is ONE TIME USE only. It should not be reused. ProTip- When you buy your new bike at the dealer, ask them to throw in 10 crush washers and a couple oil filters (if the bike has oil filters). They have ALWAYS done that for me. They would rather not lose a sale over $10-$15 worth of parts.

It's a neat little bike. Sadly Honda doesn't get these to South America. The only ones of this size you can get are Chinese knock-offs of the Honda Dax and maybe one of the old 50cc monkey. Other options are just 110cc or 125cc Cubs by Honda, Yamaha and other brands that assemble Chinese bikes, specially for these third-world-ish markets.

Just going to do my first oil change on my Monkey and the dealer suggested not to use synthetic on first change. They said wait till you get more miles as they say it is still at a break in stage. They recommended waiting at least till 2nd or 3rd oil change. From what I have seen in other videos there is a lot of metallic particles in the spinner on the first change so I will be as you say anal and do a complete oil and filter change. Also the dealer looked up and said the drain plug is 18 lb ft on the torque. By the way love the yellow color and wish they still made them in that color..
