She probably traveled with some experienced travelers, maybe on horses or camels. And why do you think she was afraid to tell her parents, who were most likely the most righteous people and knew the prophecy about a virgin conceiving the Messiah?And Mary gives an expression of a very mature and spiritual yong woman.
