Who Were the Wise Men of the Christmas Nativity Story?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 20 дек 2023
- Almost every Nativity scene features three wise men, each wearing a golden crown, and arriving from the east riding heavy-laden camels. But what do we really know about the wise men? Were there really even three? What was the significance of their gifts and what does their story teach us about our own journey to seek the Savior?

The contrast between the humble wise men from the east, who had traveled far, and the unwillingness of King Herod and the chief priests in Jerusalem to go 5 miles is what stuck with me from this video. First, it speaks to their faith and devotion. Second, it made me think: how often do we think we have to do something great in a far off land, but we neglect to do the small and simple good thing that is in our own realm of influence?
Oikos - Greek word that means "Your sphere of influence"

And they do not even expect Messiah....
Very good insight. Made me think & examine myself. Thank you, brother.
Crazy because me and my brother in law were literally just talking about these 3 yesterday. We had a whole 50 minute-ish discussion and it was so captivating.
If there WERE just 3. As the video points out, it likely was a lot more than 3, for safety in traveling a long distance transporting expensive items. Robbers are less like to attack a caravan of 50 than of 3.
we all know the caravans robbers back then was mostly arabs😂@@DonnaBrooks
Thank you for watching!
@@DonnaBrooks they were like 12 and they all traveled from Ethiopia to Jerusalem for almost two years to go see baby Jesus. Soon afterwards Jesus went to hide in Africa for his own safety until he was about 4- 5 yrs.
I like to think that they were Zoroastrians, who followed a religion related to Judaism and would have also known the prophecies. The Jews always seemed to look beyond the mark. However, the idea that they were Jews from Babylon (at this time Persia) is certainly credible. In either event, this is a beautiful, well made video with great authenticity. Jesus was and is the Messiah. I was touched to see the emotion on the face of the Magi, as he saw the Messiah.
There were also the writings and teachings of Daniel.
You're actually right. It is not speculation: History has it that, indeed they were Zoroastrian priest kings who actually believed and hoped for the birth of a divine child. That's why they had been studying the stars for generations in hopeful expectation. So, while this info is extra-biblical, we actually know who they were and where they came from.
My father wrote an historical fiction novel about the wise men. He did incredible amounts of research and created a wonderful back story for each of them. It took my dad years to finish. He self-published, but I'm praying it gets main-stream published within his lifetime. He's about to turn 87.

Thank you! We appreciate your support!
Thanks for doing this video. I know a lot of people like to excuse themselves from repenting of their sins, because they like to think that God is sovereign over their choices. The fact of the matter is that he did give us our agency to choose him or not.
I would agree with that. That's one of the big reasons I chose to attend a Free Will Baptist church.
Calvinism rots every 75 years, grows a few moldy spores, resurfaces for 50 years and rots again. It is a blight on the character of a Holy God. If there are no choices we could make then there would be no word "choice" or "choose".
But don't get stuck on that this Christmas. Enjoy the gift. Argue later.

I remember a little book my Mother gave me when I was about 5 . It was called simply, The Christmas Story and i remember how it differentiated from the typical Nativity tale in that the Kings were called Wise Men and the beautiful illustrations showed them kneeling before Jesus as a toddler not a newborn in the stable.
Wow, what a coincidence! I ordered the same book for my almost 4 yr old GrandBlessing. It arrived today and I read thru it before wrapping it to put under the tree. I can't wait to read it to her. God bless.

Even saying they were from the East is in controversy. The line “We have seen a star in the East” can be interpreted as “we, from the East, have seen a star” or “we saw a star in the East”.

More info on the wise men, In Brother Yun's book "Living Waters", he described that during this time period that one of their astrologers saw the sign in the sky and departed west to find the new king. Yun is a Chinese Christian with a incredible testimony. Also don't remember the source but there might of been an Ethiopian wise man that also made the journey.

I have always been intrigued by the wisemen from a very young age which led me to researching as much as was available about their origins . Using historical and biblical facts with some imagination and intuition I have written a script about a possible story line and how they came to Bethlehem. I too believe that there were more than three and they were definitely of Jewish descent from very different parts of the world who came together by destiny and the incredible faith they had in the Lord God of Israel.
What is the name of the script please?

Wonderful. Wonderful. A few years ago I had read that there were most likely pockets of priesthood all over and that these men were most likely of Jewish descent. Your explanation goes right with that. And another thing… Abraham taught the Egyptians all about the stars, etc when he spent time on Egypt, so that knowledge was had amongst his descendants I am sure of it. Thank you. And thank you for yet another wonderful video. I love what you said about our gifts to him….We’re kicking off our holiday today by spending time in the temple.

No body knows. What we do know is, they (no number given) were Astronomers. The Bible says the brought three gifts, not that there were three Magi. When they arrived at Bethlehem, they went to the House, and met the Small Child. Jesus could have been close to 2, no one knows.
The word Magi explains everything that you had not been able to explain!
Magi are priests in Zoroastrianism and the earlier religions of the western Iranians.
I thought Jesus was about 2 years old when the Magi reached the house where he lived. That means that they wouldn't have just traveled for months, but for 2 years. That's quite a pilgrimage.
Those 3 gifts from the 3 Magis are symbols of what Jesus is even foretold His works on earth.
1. Gold = Jesus is King
2. Frankincense = Jesus is the highest priest
3. Myrrh = Jesus shall die
Those 3 were considered kingly gifts. How great is our God. Happy Christmas people.

After all the discussions and pretending and conjectures....no person will come to a pure knowledge of the origin of these " wise men " ..unless they come genuinely seeking truth, wisdom and light. Their origin has been revealed to those who have sought the Holy Spirit without any guile. This knowledge is held as a pearl and not to be cast before the feet of those who would trample it underfoot. The greatest benefit of knowing the origin of these special ambassadors is the effect it has on one's heart as this knowledge helps to draw one closer to God.

We know that Daniel rose to prominence in his captivity in Babylon, where he was placed as overseer of the Magi there - seems he would have taught them his faith, and the prophecies, and centuries later these had been passed down from generation to generation and the Magi knew the prophecies from these being passed down to them.
Whoa I didn’t know this! I need to look more into the book of Daniel, I guess.
The wise men were Zoroastrian Persian priests, who were known to be incredible, astronomers and mathematicians. The manner in which they were dressed, also points to this, as does the preponderance of historic and scriptural evidence.
What is that scriptural evidence?
Yep pretty close....contrary to popular Christmas tradition which came into being centuries after Jeus died, the Bible does not use the terms “three wise men” or “three kings” to describe the travelers who went to see Jesus after his birth. (Matthew 2:1) Instead, the Gospel writer Matthew used the Greek word ma’goi to describe those who visited Jesus. The word likely refers to experts in astrology and other occult practices. A number of Bible translations call them “astrologers” or “magi.” Interestingly Herodotus, a Greek historian of the fifth century B.C.E., said that the ma’goi of his day belonged to a Median (Persian) tribe that specialized in astrology and interpretation of dreams. So they definitely were not Jews as the Jews did not practice astrology or spiritism of any sort as this was forbidden and would carry the death penalty according to the Bible - Deuteronomy 18:9-13 - Levitucus 20:27 @@earlysda
@@kableguy5525kable, it is very likely that the magi were of Jewish descent, or were Persians who had gotten the truth from Daniel or other Jews who had been taken captive to Babylon.
Interesting! The Biblical facts show that 550 years or so after Daniel lived these astrologers (interpreters of the stars) from the east were servants of false gods and were, wittingly or unwittingly, were the ONLY ONES led by what appeared to them as a moving “star.” directly not to Jesus but to Herod first! They alerted Herod to the fact that the “king of the Jews” had been born, and Herod, in turn, sought to have Jesus killed - Mt 2:1-12 (notice they didn't say our King as they would have had they been Jews). This was all part of a plot to kill Jesus. The star that led them to Herod was of demonic origin. Would God have used Jews as part of this plot to have his own son killed? Of course not and so God intervened and warned these astrologers not to tell Herod and return home.
Rightly, then ancient writers - Justin Martyr, Origen, and Tertullian, when reading Matthew 2:1, thought of maʹgoi as astrologers and not Jews. Wrote Tertullian (“On Idolatry,” IX): “We know the mutual alliance of magic and astrology. The interpreters of the stars, then, were the first . . . to present Him [Jesus] ‘gifts.’” (The Ante-Nicene Fathers, 1957, Vol. III, p. 65) The name Magi became current “as a generic term for astrologers in the East.”-The New Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia, 1952, Vol. 22, p. 8076.
Of course the Astrologers as well as others in those days may have had access to the written Jewish prophecies from scrolls in Babylon, Persia and Assyria about the Jewish messiah (or heard about the 70 weeks of years Daniel prophecy) due to the fact the Jews had been scattered to other regions centuries previously at the Jewish exile as well as before this and so had Bible scrolls with them as they went.@@earlysda
Me Myself and I .
It’s been said they were those to put Kings into power. They were astronomers for sure which is how they knew to read the stars. Daniel certainly had an influence in that society which is how they came to know of the Jewish faith. Scholars also have said they weren’t there on the actual night of his birth.
After Jesus Christ returns for his 1000 year reign, I believe all these (important) details will be made known to us
Couldn't agree more. Thank you for your time and your comment!
The wise men never visited the stable. They visited Jesus at his home...possibly when he was two and it is said they were probably from the group that Daniel headed up years back in captivity.
Thank you abba father for giving us your son Jesus to save us
Amen❤️🙏🏾
Thank you for not supporting the idea that the wise men were star worshippers who knew about Salvation through astrological charts and other pagan enchantments, but found the knowledge of the Savior through the Holy Writings. Also, it may be possible that the gold was given as a gift so that Joseph and Mary could purchase a Torah scroll and other expensive scrolls of Scripture. They did go into exile in Egypt and when Jesus was only 13, He seemed to have a profound and superior knowledge of Scripture. Torah scrolls were very very expensive, hand-scribed, certified and only practical to keep at synagogues were many people lived as a city/group (not so much in Egypt) and personal ownership would be worthy of a rich person or royalty only. God bless.
Well I was always under the impression that the Three stars of Orion’s Belt (Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka ) were often referred to as the three kings in ancient times. Follow these 3 stars in a downward line and they ALWAYS point to the brightest star in the sky, Sirius also known as the Dog Star. (Perhaps the star of Bethlehem).
You assume there were three wise men, the number is not specified in the Bible where their only reference is Matthew 2 v1-12
The wise men came from Arabia, which is to the East.
Lehi traveled through Arabia and taught the gospel along the way. Hence, there was a righteous, informed, population of gospel followers (members of the Church) in Arabia who would know all the prophecies of the Savior and so be fully prepared for His coming (just like the Nephites).
Mormon heresy lol
"Open your mouths and they shall be filled, and you shall become even as Nephi of old, who journeyed from Jerusalem in the wilderness." D&C 33:8
According to the narration dialogue of the late actor Orson Welles, in the 1961 Biblical movie epic “KING OF KINGS”, the wisemen were Melchior, Balthazar, and Gaspah. Also, their nationalities were listed as being Persian, Ethiopian, and Mesopotamian.
The wise men were actually zoroastrian priests. Zoroastrianism was one of the first monotheistic religions and thought that Jesus was the savior of their religion as well. They were from Persia
Can you explain to me what zoroastrianism is all about? Is it another form of Abrahamic religion?
Zoroastrianism was one of the first monotheistic religions. It's only being revived again within the last 20 years, partly thanks to George R.R. Martin the fantasy writer.@@Steve-ry1cz

Thanks for the presentation. Interesting. Just like to add a couple of points....
The popular Christmas tradition came into being centuries after Jesus died and the Bible was finished. But the Bible does not use the terms “three wise men” or “three kings” to describe the travelers who went to see Jesus after his birth. (Matthew 2:1) Instead, the Gospel writer Matthew used the Greek word ma’goi ( μάγος ) to describe those who visited Jesus. Magus related to ma'goi or magi, was member of an ancient Persian clan specializing in cultic activities. The name is the Latinized form of magoi (e.g., in Herodotus 1:101), the ancient Greek transliteration of the Iranian original. From it the word magic is derived- Encyclopedia Brittanica
I wonder how many they were. Everyone always assumes it was three wise men but in the Bible it only says wise men. They were never actually numbered.
The Magoi as They are described in the original bible text were Magi Priests (zoroastrian priests) They were Astrologers. Read the stars in the east (Iran). They are even depicted in the renaissance as wearing phrychian caps. So that makes them iranian wise men and their God was Ahura Mazda
Daniel Ch 9 sets out the 'weeks'; 7 weeks, 69 weeks and a week in 2 halves. The first period was the 49 years from the start to completion of rebuilding of Jerusalem after the First Exile, the second was what the Maji worked out surprisingly accurately, not entirely correctly, because they had no clue of the actual age of the Messiah at the time of his triumphal entry into Jerusalem: only that it was ahead of Pesach exactly 69X7 years (360day Jewish calendar years) from the edict... It was why they, knowing the writings of Daniel, expected its fulfillment by the Messiah which is why they told Herod that within a window of 2 years that a King had been born. Simeon and Anna in the temple knew it was time too. Our Messiah came exactly on time, to the day, as prophesied so many centuries before. God knew what he was doing through Daniel, and through Jesus, and through every one of the prophets who He told about the Saviour. I don't believe the Maji arrived at the manger with the Shepherds, but I believe they arrived in Jerusalem looking for the Messiah and found Him.

From Babylon is interesting because book of Daniel and it’s is from the East.
Jethroe, the father-in-law of Moses, gave Moses the patriarchal priesthood, enabling Moses to achieve what he did! There had to be other authorized believers and followers of ancient righteousness besides Jethroe and his clan, who would have had the prophecies of Jesus' birth!! It seems certain that the "wise men" were not just dreamers, or soothsayers, but men of God who knew of and expected the birth of the King!!
The prophet Daniel was the progenitor of the Maggi, and yes, they traveled from Iraq (Babylon). Nebuchadnezzar had threatened to kill all the wise men of Babylon when no one could tell him his dream and what it meant, until Daniel was given the answers in a vision. Daniel requested that the king NOT kill the wise men and correctly interpreted the dream, after telling the king what that dream was. Daniel chapter 2 verse 48 reads: "Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon". The Maggi knew the Messiah was going to be born and were waiting for the sign in the heavens.
