I'd check the end play prior to putting on the seal unless you've already done that. Oops, guess not. I'd really like to see 3 shims instead of just 2. It looks as though your missing the cylinder head internal deflectors. The RH one has a slot for the thermostat rod and the LH one is un-slotted. Very important for long valve life. Go to "Awesome Powder Coating" and look under the heading "VW Parts" and scroll down to cylinder head internal deflectors for a picture. They sell them, they're not too expensive. One of those odd little parts everyone just leaves off, like the "Hoover Bit", although this engine doesn't use it.
You’re right about the oil seal. No matter how much you read that book, you always learn something new.
As far as the piece of tin missing, I didn’t have any spares, so I cut him a new one from some sheet metal.
I also, didn’t like his cylinder head, with the plug hole repair, so I swapped him out a head that won’t give him trouble in the future.
And…I don’t have any of the dual port engines with dog house oil coolers.
If that case has a captive nut in the LH side to mount it to the transaxle than you can convert it to a dog house oil cooler.@@OkFixer
Surprised Leon, didn't paint the push rods tubes.
He did, but just with matte clear enamel. He wanted the metal look

Okay. Good.
Great deal! Tell Leon to swap that .009 distributor for a SVDA distributor. .009s are terrible for street driven cars, which is why they were never part of the factory equipment.
The 009 is just to hold the drive gear in place. Leon has a svda distributor. Watch the older videos.
He has an original distributor, however the Chinese carb he bought has zero vacuum at the fittings. So there is no advance with the original dizzy.
You can bring a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.
I had an old .009 I gave him for his engine, because….right now, he has no advance whatsoever.
I figured crappy performance WITH an advance, is better than crappy performance with no advance.
I’m trying to fix his leaks, and make it run cooler. It’s highly probable he will get fed up with having to have his foot on the gas all the time, and will spring for the correct parts. And these can be added latter.
But….yeah… I know. Whatchagonnado?

Didn't know about the vacuum fittings issue.
@@vintage76vipergreenBeetle The Chinese carb he bought…has…vacuum fittings, but no vacuum comes out of them. Probably because the passages haven’t been drilled in the carb. Just a guess.
He needs the correct carb, but….yeah.

Sorry, I miss read the first comment. Hopefully Leon will end up buying a good carburetor and distributor, for the engine down the road.
You never mentioned the dimension to stretch push rod tubes to before innstalling
7.75 inch as i recall flat to flat under taper o rings
Yeah, I didn’t mention a lot of things. But…yes, we did give them a little tweak before we installed them.
