      Great review. Thanks for the advice. I noticed you didn't show the blank character sheet provided in the starter set. Perhaps your copy didn't include it, or you missed it, when you jumped over the ad sheet for D&D Encounters. The starter set that I just purchased has a blank character sheet on the back of the ad for D&D Encounters. Just curious.

      Hey great video. I think you may have forgotten to mention that the add in the starter set has a blank character sheet on the back of it though! Its a big plus for new players like me, as all the free character sheets I've found online haven't been as nice.

      Hello, I'm trying to get into D&D with a new group. I was wondering is it worth it to go ahead and purchase all the 5 th edition things or should I wait for 6th edition since 5th has been out for a few years?

    • @thekaratekid02
      @thekaratekid02 6 лет назад

      Hey there, 5th edition is still very much alive, with an average lifespan of about 8 years per edition. New books are still being released. Tomb of annihilation came out last September and xanathars guide to everything comes out in a few days. Plus, 5th edition and its material will still remain totally valid despite new editions coming out. There are people who still play 1st edition.

    Kind of hard to find players where I'm at. It's quite a small town and the next towns over are both an hour away. Everyone at work has looked at me strange and said "No thanks." I played this in the military during downtime, and I really miss it.

    Agree, if you just starting, playing with an established group, just show up, they'll get you started borrowing their materials. If you find that you enjoy it, buy a players handbook and a set of dice of your own.
    If you are a whole group of rookies, I really like the starter set. Everything a group needs to play.
    It's okay for a rookie to not have the books. But you really don't want to be the guy who has played for 6 months and still has to bum books and dice all the time. No one likes that guy.
    You'll likely want to look things up at home and you need the PHB for that.
    Oh and either bring your own snacks, or help out with money for group snacks. EVERYONE likes the guy who helps buy the pizza!!!
    One of the traditions in my groups is if you are a new player I as your first DM will gift you your first set of dice.
    Oh and if you want to DM, then you'll need the other books, DMG and monster manual. But by then you should know that.
    As far as premade adventures go, I suppose I'm strange, but I always had a much easier time creating my own adventures. I never liked, and am not good at running premade adventures. The rules for doing home brews are pretty simple really. If you passed pre-algebra you can figure it out.
    Experienced players will help you in all facets, being a DM for experienced players makes it a lot easier, as they will help you. I think a lot of folks think it's harder to run for veterans and I've found the exact opposite is true.
    Another really REALLY good resource is the plethora of forums and blogs about the game. There are a ton of great character and campaign ideas out there, and it's perfectly fine to steal them.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  9 лет назад +6

      The Lowmein I don't think you're strange at all in preferring your own adventures. Most DM's I know are that way too, including myself. Pre-written adventures were a good way for me to get my feet wet and figure out how good encounters were built and stories could be told, but I think you are right that's it's pretty easy to figure out how to make your own. Anyway, thanks for the comment. Solid advice!

      Hi!
      I'm asking for advice here because I'm stuck on what to do...
      I feel like I'm personally in an awkward situation...because I really want to play d&d, and I have 3 friends that want to play with me, one has even volunteered to be the dungeon master!
      But I've never played d&d before, none of us has ever played it, and I want to start a campaign but I don't want to spend too much money on all the materials, I just want to see if we like it...
      What do you recommend?

    • @Dirtfire
      @Dirtfire 5 лет назад +1

      @@victorianpoison199 I haven't played D&D yet either, but I think the general opinion is to go with the Starter Set, which has everything you need. First adventure and such. I personally would need to find people to play it with.

    Sorry bout that, I played tonight and it was great! We spent four hours making our characters and it seemed like it would be tedious at first but it was so much fun!! I went to play having nothing and I was fine, we're planning on buying a grid and such in the near future. We also had the players handbook that we shared.

    ***** I think you have replies disabled on your account. Hopefully you see this. :) The DM screen was not out yet when I released this video. The DM screen did make my 'related products' section of my written version here - www.wasd20.net/dd-buyers-guide/
    But no, you certainly don't need it to DM. It has some tools to help you improv and some rules summaries and such that give good reminders so you don't need to refer to the book as often, but it's not something you need at all. See my review over here - ruclips.net/video/rRC_BFWgP00/видео.html

    +Joel Richardson -- I think you have replies disabled man, so I hope you see this. You absolutely don't need a Player's Handbook or Starter Set to play if you are just showing up as a player. They will likely have everything you need if they have played before. It might be worth asking if they have dice you can borrow. Most experienced players have extra :) Enjoy!

    Mines of Phandelver is a damn good adventure, even for veteran players. I actually bought that after getting the main 3 books and my players loved it.

  • @troyspencer712
    @troyspencer712 9 лет назад +5

    Buying order for me would be Players Handbook > Monster manual > DM guide >Tyranny of Dragons, and lastly Starter set. I have all of the above and only thing I regret buying of the lot is the Starter set, but with that said I am about to finish the Mines of Phandelver with my group. This is more about me not really liking Modules than the product itself. I Think all players should pick up a copy of the Players Handbook and potential Dm's should at least grab the Monster Manual with the DM guide being optional.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  9 лет назад +6

      Cool, Troy. Yep, the DMG before the MM is certainly debatable. But I'm just going off the fact that the free PDF has about 100 monsters. Also it's pretty easy to snag monsters from previous editions or make your own monsters (guide on this in the DMG). Still, I wouldn't give up my monster manual :) And the DMG is certainly optional too. The Starter Set is not something most people are going to need if they've played RPGs before, but for a group of complete newcomers I think it would be very hard to get into D&D without something like the starter set. It's a good first step.

    Can I just thank you. I'm a newbie played last week and very much enjoyed it. Wanted to buy something, therefore bought the starter set. I didn't open it for 4 days as I knew I could change it for the players book. Watching this video your sample sessions etc has greatly help. I will try and hold off buying the players book, it looks a great book. When I played last week I was understanding procedures etc and then looked in the players book and got confused quickly.
    I wish to try and play stuff solo as well, which I'm told is possible, but no one seems to know how.

    Excellent video. I am just starting up DMing myself but I did the same sort of stuff you suggested. When you play the first time don't buy anything, or read anything, just have your DM help you out. I picked up the Player's Handbook and plan on picking up the other 2 since I am interested in them. I did read the free online PDF which was very good and once again is a good suggestion. For a new player the video makes very good recommendations.

    Our group is currently running the mines of Phandelver. We are an experienced group not rookies( about twenty years combined among us starting with the tsr original starter set), but it's my first time DMing so for me it has been a big help because of the quick reference material. Our Usual dm is a player for a change and he loves the adventure and loves the quick reference rule book. This module I would recommend for any vetran group to get back to basics It helped up get a renewed familiarity with the rules especially since up till recently the adventure we were playing was a 3.5 adventure and there are some tweaks to the rules for 5e.

    I found this really helpful. I am currently trying to get into the game, but I have a habit of over-preparing and this gave sound reasoning and insight into what I might one day purchase. I intend to play a tiefling so I'll probably still get the Player's Handbook, but I'll probably hold off on the other two core books for now since I don't know if I'll be DMing or not. For Players: Free pdf's > Player's Handbook
    For DM's: Monster Manual > Lost Mine of Phandelver
    I really don't find the Dungeon Master's Guide to be very useful and it's up to you if you want to run any other premade adventure or if you want to run your own. But you should probably start with LMoP to understand the basics and whatnot.

    Great video...glad to see someone mention the free PDFs. I'm an old school gamer who had been away from RPG's for about 20 years. Work and family kept me away from the hobby. About a year ago I started with 5th edition and all I have purchased so far is the starter set and copied the PDF's. Your gaming world and player options may be a bit more limited than using the core rule books, but like you said, enough info in them to last a gamer a lifetime.

    Nate, where were you when I was jumping in a couple of years ago? Excellent beginner videos! For me, I just bought random 4e stuff and learned as I went - my wallet paid the price. Thankfully I came across great smaller, cheaper RPGs (Castles & Crusades, Hero Kids, and especially Harvesters) which I play tested with my middle school students to see how it all worked. After "getting" the feel of the DM, I finally weeded out all the chaff and was able to start purchasing wisely. I'm just now starting to pick up 5e and your videos have certainly helped.

    I'm not sure why videos seem to take forever. Here's the basics:
    If you're not sure about playing 5th edition - buy the Starter Set.
    If you know you're going to play it, then:
    ONE person should own the DM's guide (preferably your DM ; ) and they should also own the Monster Manual.
    Everyone, including the DM, should buy the Players' Handbook.
    You can share the PH, but only likely between 2 of you. Otherwise, everyone is scrambling for a book.
    TA DA!

    Don't know if you really want to play:
    1. download the pdfs and join a game trough discord with a group
    Want to play, found the awesome:
    1. Buy the player's handbook
    2. Buy 2 sets of dices
    ____
    Want to DM:
    1. Start by playing and getting experience
    2. Buy the monster manual and dungeon master guide to learn more about stuff
    3. (If you play in person, if only online skip)Print some free paper miniatures, get a good colection of cardboard ones to give your game more depth.
    4. Buy an adventure, I'd recommend starting with the lost mines of phandelver or you can choose anyone of your like.
    5. Buy the other important books (volo and mordekainen for monsters, xanathar and sword coast for more player stuff.
    Want even more?
    Buy more adventure books, there are a bunch of them, most of them are awesome.
    Only for the MVP:
    You're great at playing and dming? Want more? Want things that the game don't have a way to provide for you yet?
    So create your own content! Your world! Monsters! Npcs! Adventures!
    Homebrew all the stuff you'd like in your game :D

    • @crisrody852
      @crisrody852 5 лет назад

      Oh, and the most important thing for a player to do:
      Try to spend like 2 hours every week by improving your character, you don't need to min-max or combo anything, just think about roleplay and the world he is in, be ready for the next games. Your DM is spending a ton of time preparing the world for you, so at least try to spend a couple hours preparing to make a better game, try at least to read the PHB and know your skills and spells for the session :D

  • @VampguyN85
    @VampguyN85 5 лет назад

    With enough effort you can google search all the sub classes and spells ect. I go to dnd beyond first and i bring my latop for gaming sessions as my character sheet is there. Whatever is locked on beyond I just google. There's a few good wiki databases for dnd.

    Your video inspired me to go ahead and print off the Basic PDF's. I had sold all my 2e, 3e and 4e books to got all in on Basic and 1e, but I figured "why the heck not?!" So ≈100 pages, one black ink catridge, a binder covered with hearts I stole from my daughter, and one paper jam later - I'm fully loaded. I also googled some Table of Contents for both documents (c'mon WoTC! No art? Fine. But not even a table of contents??).
    Again, thanks for the vid Nate! I'm going to a con in March, and now I can be set to go for

    also there are a lot of basic game boxed sets that include all of the starter set items as well as usually 4 of the 2 sided map pieces and a variety of miniatures. several of these would be enough to get more than enough items to run a variety of adventures as well as starting ideas to get yourself and your friends into the game.

    • @immortalwolf3055
      @immortalwolf3055 7 лет назад

      one that i got even had the character sheet template in its basic rules abridged leaflet

      they are for 3.5 but you can use the adventures as a guideline and you still get a full set of die and miniatures as well as the 4 10 inch by 10 inch two sided map pieces. and they can usually be gotten fairly cheap.

    Great guide! Sadly my roommates think I'm a nerd and won't play with me so I had to skip the starter set. :(
    It's funny though how things work out... meeting every Wednesday night at my game store I set around this huge table with about 6 other people. I know none of their "real" names, only the names of their characters. I guess you can say the people I play D&D with are strangers to me but we share a type of bond that my roommates could never understand. Hahah
    But yeah if you are new to D&D and have no one to play with I highly recommend doing what WASD20 said and checkout the free pdf's then move on to the Players Handbook. Go to your game store and see who plays, ask them if you can watch their game then see if they have a spot open.
    Seriously- meet people, and make friends!! I know it can be scary but trust me it's well worth it, more-so than the actual game and products!:))

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  9 лет назад +1

      Good words, man. Sorry your roommates are like that, but I'm glad you've found some people to play with. I'm slowly trying to convert my own friends and family as well, but like you I got my start by just showing up to some game shops and jumping in. Take care, brother.

    If you don't even want to put down money, try learning how the website, roll20 works. It helps a lot and has virtual dice. You could use that and the free pdfs to get into it and, after that, decide if you want to play more later. If it's something you like the game and want to play more, get the player's handbook. If you are obsessed get the DMG and monster manual. It's all really fun, but you decide how invested in it you want to be.

    5th edition to me seems like a modern re-skin of 2nd edition. I actually like the art work, modules and aesthetics of that old edition better than anything 5e has to offer, although I did buy the starter's set and it's cool. But that's just me I am older.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  7 лет назад

      Yeah, a lot of people are disappointed by this, which is fair. However, 5th edition is designed to be played well without maps or miniatures, which I think is cool. You can always add those later. However, if you're a maps and minis type I understand your disappointment. This box is also quite a bit cheaper than the 4th ed set.

    I actually do not recommend new DMs to start with pre-written adventures. It's great as a reference, but it's MUCH better to write your own adventures, set in your own fictional worlds - because doing improv in a set- in stone already existing universe without investing hefty amounts of time reading up on it, is hard. Like really really hard.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  8 лет назад +2

      +Quikie93 -- I definitely see where you are coming from, but for me as a new DM it was worth the work to learn what an adventure consisted of. I would have totally floundered and probably never DMed in the first place if I didn't have the pr-written adventure. Still, I think if someone feels at all able to come up with their own, it is a good idea. You are right about that. And pre-written adventures ARE a lot of work.

    • @Quikie93
      @Quikie93 8 лет назад +1

      +WASD20 I definitly think it's a great help to read them through - if nothing else to learn how dungeons are and or can be made, how things work and if nothing else for inspiration :) Me and my family tried pre made - although I wasn't DM back then (but i'd imagine i wouldnt have done any better) and it was a pain - because any form of improvisation was almost impossible.
      Now we're trying again, with me as a DM - and I've made my own world and story and going from there, and it's going a lot better.
