I really want to play D&D and I'm planning to ask starter set for christmas! I got really hooked when I listened others playing. I first heard of it when I was watching art side of youtube. And somebody drew beautifully their characters, so I looked up what D&D was and I really liked the idea of the game!
Same! I've been seeing it a lot lately and have been really interested. I'm just now starting to try to learn to play but I'm very excited. How has it been going for you? I realize this comment was posted 3 yrs. ago Lol
The person who introduced me to D&D was my younger cousin. He'd been playing it at school. One day, he broke his arm and thereafter spent considerable time at his grandmother's. I was on shift work at the time and called in. So we started playing. He was the DM for a while; we each had two characters and we just played through the modules. I was hooked in about 10 seconds. It wasn't long before I was running the game. We made loads of mistakes but we had fun. When was this? It was 1984 and, of course, it was 1st-edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. I've been running campaigns ever since with a few breaks here and there. Unfortunately I rarely get to be the player. On the plus side, I'm running for two groups - fortnightly Thursday nights and almost weekly Saturday nights.
Hi, as a girl trying to get help to start DnD it's genuinely proving difficult - alas your channel has helped so much and i'm finally going to get buying the books and finding some people to play with! Can't wait to start digging into it , thanks so much for making everything so much more easier!
Actually in my experience it does, many of the advertisement put up for games my friends and I have applied to have shut us down on terms of 'it'll be awkward with girls' and many other excuses along the lines of that- my comment was based on my experience alone so I can't speak for other girls who play Dnd. Maybe for you it doesn't matter but for other people it does, so maybe being a 'fucking shit' only applies to girls around my home area :)
Well as a girl I've been told I'll just make it awkward and 'this is a pretty advanced arc are you sure you can keep up ?' Yes I am an amateur but that's because all the groups in my area are elitist and I have no willing friends
This was a great video thanks! I found when I searched “how to start playing D&D” a lot of people just had videos of them starting a new game and explaining it along the way. What I really needed was exactly what you made. What to buy, how to start, what will guide me. Exactly in that situation, I’ve wanted to try it for a while but I don’t know anyone who plays. Very excited to start!!! Yay!!
How to start playing dnd: 1:print out a charater sheet 2:get some dice Optional: buy the players handbook. ( you can find monsters and stuf on the Internet)
But what if you don't have friends who are interested in this type of thing? How would you propose to begin if none of your friends are the type for D&D?
Sorry for necroing, but you can usually find people in your area online. Especially for dnd which has almost all around the world a pretty solid playerbase. Maybe Europe is more dark eye than dnd, but still: look into tablefinders online
Search for a small tabletop game shop, theres plant of them and they *almost* always have tables and room where you can play with other people that knows (or not) the game
A couple of my friends and i were having a conversation that led to D&D. We thought it would be cool to try so now were frantically gathering info on how to play.
Been DMing on and off for the last ten years, and I still find myself learning new things off High Rollers! Your enthusiasm and zest for it reawakened my love of D&D after a burnout and rather long break from it. I'd also like to thank you for illustrating just how fun 5th Edition can be, as I'd become rather stuck in my ways of solely running AD&D until about a month back. Looking forwards to more great content.
To a large extent, this is just a huge promotion for the D&D Starter Set, but simply by looking through it, one understands why. It's a great place to start for those who only has friends to play with but otherwise nothing else to help them all get started. I remember getting intrigued by tabletop RPGs a few years ago and the first thing I did was RUclips something like "how to play Pathfinder" so this will definitely reach new players with the best advice available. I also found it vital that you mentioned the free basic rules and Roll20. I didn't have anyone to play with and I wanted an experience you typically wouldn't be able to get from game shop tables. I thus found a group of strangers on Roll20 to really get me started playing D&D (yes, I've yet to play a single game of Pathfinder). That's basically what I want to add to this. This video is great for those who think they can make their friends interested in playing. For the rest of us, there is the Looking For Group section on Roll20. If you consider DM'ing, there's even a digital version on the Starter Set that fully exploits the advantages Roll20 gives you such as simply clicking. Roll20 even has their own free starter set called The Master's Vault. I've yet to play or run it but looking through it that too sounds like a solution for those who want to try D&D, need inspiration but don't feel like spending any money on it just yet.
My group just finished the Lost Mines of Phandelver adventure! Took nearly a year, but my goodness it's just about the most fun I've ever had. As Matt Colville puts it: "It's the most fun you can have with your mind". Thanks for a great video. I hope it'll get many more people into playing this amazing game!
Keep up the good work, Mark, we need informative videos like these to encourage people to pick up D&D. Ps. Glad I'm not the only one who sleeps with a starter kit under my pillow.
The end card, I'm dying XD When I saw that you had made a tabletop channel I became so excited! Before the D&D live-stream I loved board games and D&D but had lost my spark in playing them. Watching High rollers brought it back and now play regularly in my favourite board game cafe! Thank you for bringing it back into my life and thanks to the D&D group that never fails to improve my mood each week :)
This makes me so happy! I'm so glad HR and the streams helped people get that spark back. It's certainly helped me as well! THe world needs more tabletop gaming in it!
I really enjoyed Marks Guide to Lounging. Can tell you are really passionate about the subject. But seriously, can really feel the passion you have for D&D. It's probably the biggest reason I took an interest in D&D a few months ago, and why I recently got my in-laws to participate in a game (they loved it btw). Really glad you have a medium to express this.
Came here after a tweet from Stephan Frost - LOVED this video - it was exactly what I was looking for! A few friends and myself have been wanting to try out D&D and we never knew where to start and living across the country from each other has been a challenge in trying to organize and get going. This is a great starting point for us and I'd love to see more D&D materials going forward!
I already feel so much more comfortable with going and playing for the first time soon, I'm glad there's so many kind people out there who are willing to help the noobs
I've been playing d&d for around 6 months now thanks to high rollers, you inspired me and thank you for opening me up to this amazing world, thank you mark 😊
Can I say Mark you are what got me and my friends into D&D. I now play D&D with 3 groups of people and enjoying every bit of it! Cheers for everything you do man, Keep up the great work!

Thanks! My brother and I at b&n sitting in the parking lot after just buying the starter pack and we’re having a double take on what to get. This was awesome thanks!
Thank you for this video. I have been watching D&D videos for a couple of days after a conversation with friends about RPGs. I just ordered the Starter Kit. This has been the most helpful video yet. I played once before, with a group that played a lot, and I was lost the entire time... Starting at level one and learning together with a group of friends will hopefully be a bridge, but also be fun.
HAHA the end of the video was awesome. great information and I just picked up the starter set. Will see if we are advanced enough to make our own characters and take on that dungeon!
loving the look of the new channel! got introduced to DND by a family friend and have played a couple of games with him and his bro but can't wait to play so much more in the future!!
Pretty new to D&D myself but been playing a WoW tabletop RPG for the last few months with my housemates which is similar but less refined and clunkier mechanics wise than 5e. I have the monster manual, DM Guide and screen so far plus some dice, hopefully players handbook for Xmas. I really need to get out there and find more players though and get some games in as a player. Thanks to this vid, now I'll ask for the starter set for Xmas as that might be very useful for me as an aspiring DM. Hopefully it'll help me convert my friends at home when I finish uni as well! Thanks for the video, subbed to the channel good sir!
Awesome to hear! Starter set is great if you want to start DMing and ease some friends into it, going in hard can be a bit intimidating for some but playing a starter set with a pre-made character can open it up for them. :) Good luck!
Thanks for this video. I'v been watching a lot of D&D and wanted to play it but never knew where to start so this should get the ball rolling. Now all I have to do is get some friends...
I know this video is older but anyone watching the free download of the rules of how I got into d&d and it was the best thing ever. Me and 4 friends never played and we played for like 8 hours and stumbled our way from a meh campaign I made. But it was amazing for us cause I know my friends. Making your own campaign to begin with is a good way to get friends to jump into a role playing cause you know their personality better than the starter kit.
this has been incredibly helpful, i've always been really interested in D&D and catching up on high rollers has been a great way to scratch that itch. but, of course, nothing beats the real thing, and this really helped break the ice on starting. thanks mark!
Hey Mark! DM'ing my first proper D&D 5E game now and am in my second session. Seems to be going really well so far! Using Roll20 and Mythweavers for sheets :D
I had my first D&D session last Saturday, and my second one will be tomorrow :) I'm super hyped for it, and having this has just added to the hype and confidence for it, thanks Mark!
Hello Mark, I'm about to start my first ever D&D 5e with friends. And to make it even more difficult for myself I will be the DM for this session. I've watched all of you basic D&D videos and they have given me a great deal of usufull information and clarity. That's about all I have to say for now. I've got many more of your videos to watch so I'll be prepared for my own D&D session.
Just want to say, I’m enjoying your videos. I find them helpful as I’m pretty new to dnd. I played it thirty odd years ago at middle school but I’ve fallen into it properly a month ago and have already run a game three times. Keep the content coming.
So happy to see this was really upset when I stopped getting videos on your other channel. So looking forward to what you have coming out. Subbed as soon as I heard this was a thing need.
I've DM'd twice so far, however both times we never got to finish the story ark, mainly because of summer vacation, (everyone was busy and it was more difficult to get together as none of us have cars yet). We used to meet in the school cafeteria after classes, and then we met under some stairs for a while, but this year we haven't done anything. I've recently gotten back into High Rollers and D&D in general, and I've started making a third storyline that hopefully we'll finish this time! *Knocks on wood* I just need to find one or two more people and maybe a better place to do it in. There's something un-recreatable about doing things in person, and I've given Roll 20 a try but didn't quite like it. Seriously though Mark, you're amazing and keep on doing the awesome work on both High Rollers and your new channel!
Having somewhere stable to play, a bedroom, a classroom after school, somewhere dedicated will help. If you have limited time, let your players free-roam a bit more and develop stories based on their actions and interests. Roll20 isn't for everyone, I certainly prefer playing IRL, but it's a useful tool. Glad you enjoy it and thanks for checking it all out!
I’ve always wanted to play D&D, I have a character made (half-elf Druid) and I’m ready to read a bunch of books and learn as much as I can. I just only have two friends who want to play with me, and one of which I have never met in person, so thanks for making this video so I can be as ready as I can for when I finally do get to play.
I'm at uni and me and my friends use Roll 20 to try and play every week, we actually have several campaigns going simultaneously so we can be flexible if a DM can't make it
After watching Highrollers I got extremely inspired and started playing DND with my friends. Now thanks to some support from friends I am hosting my own one-off campaign and loving every minute my friends quaking in their boots at the coming madness
great video! also great tips :) me and some new friends are going through this campaign now for our first adventure all thanks to you and the highrollers :D
Thank you sooo much for this video. It really helped out and now I'm really looking forward to getting D&D to play with fam and friends! Thank you good sir. You have helped me out a great deal.
me and some buddies are going to start playing on saturday nights, My first time playing, and I'll be the DM. I'm excited and nervous. Looking at as many resources and videos that I can so we can have fun. thanks for the tips mate.
No problem! Relax, have fun, remember to try and say "yes and, yes but, or no but" to whatever crazy nonsense your players come up with! Don't stress if they are murder hobos or go off the rails, just make sure they have fun!
I’m jumping into a group that’s already playing so this wasn’t suuuper helpful for me but thank you for the tip about the website that gives you the rules. :)
With the amount of high rollers and critical role ive seen, along with matts GM tips im practically a DM master! However this is a very useful video to show people a good starting point. May i suggest the next video explain what modern dndis for those who dont know. It might introduce even more people. Also linking the High rollers story cant hurt for new people to see what its all about. Over all I loved it. Well done.
Im playing through "The Lost Mine of Phandelver" now as DM, It is amazing, and I would recommend it so much! Excited for it finishing and me making my own adventure!
awesome channel! In so happy i can see more of your snagging DND explanations! High rollers is awesome! I think it's due to the amazing Dm story telling... who knows? keep up the great content!
Just wanted to say thanks as although this advice came too late and I am now in the middle DM-ing of my first campaign. The PCs are also new and so getting them to roleplay has been hard but they are getting to understand it! I have been thinking about writing a thank you for a while but the latest thing that drove me to do it was a friend of the players who'd never played it before walking up to me and saying "I think I've heard you play D&D and it sounds pretty cool would you mind if I joined for a session". The PCs are learning slowly but their current characters are: human fighter who lost his parents though vicious slavery and now is on a quest to free all slaves(I did ask him whether he watched High Roller's and he just said he was inspired by Moses); A gnome monk who is the only person who knew anything prior about D&D for which I am grateful; An elf wizard who couldn't think of anything interesting so I gave him some Lightborn traits and now he thinks he's Jesus; finally a rainbow Dragonborn wild magic sorcerer with violent tendencies and "occasional" blackouts that at level 2 tried to start a 1v1 with a gargoyle so now the PCs are on the resurrect him. Although I know very little about and your characters seem to have more life I am learning and from every high roller stream and laughing with it so thank you mark for all you down to earth nice-ness which helped make a thriving community I'm proud to be a part of. A DM who's trying to sound profound Trawkker.
It will all come in time, friend. Nobody starts playing D&D as an amazing roleplayer or DM, it takes practice like anything. Also remember that not all players want or enjoy lots of RP, some just want to hang with friends and "play a game". That's okay, give them little tidbits of story to keep them engaged but don't feel you have to push them to get involved. :) Glad you're enjoying D&D and wish you many great adventures to come!
Thank you good sir, I am finding these videos very helpful. I've recently got that itch after not playing for about 15yrs. I have no friends that are interested in DnD but there are resources out there to find like minded people. I just did a google search and found that there is a reasonably active area on Reddit. Within 2-3 days I've found 4 other people in my localish area and will be meeting this weekend to roll characters.
Tabletop Weekly Thank you very much and I hope you keep these types of videos coming. A character creation walk through with a few explanations about key stats would be great to see btw. And for anyone else reading this it isn't like I'm in a major city either, I'm up in the wilds of West Yorkshire.
Tabletop Weekly Nice one mate! I've passed a few videos on to some of the first timers and they also found them helpful. Keep it up, you are providing a great service to the D&D community.
While all this is great advice I still have one question... How do you get these friends you talk abou? do you buy them or what?
I think friends are DLC? right?
OvrGwn But where do you buy this DLC? I can't find it anywhere
I dont know, i think it must be a hidden DLC maybe you have to do a secret achievement or do something at the right time
Oh that is easy just go up to someone and use the *interact* option multiple times (It may take awhile) this will ether make them your friends or creep them out depending on your *interaction history*. Oh and it helps if you have the *outside* option on good luck.

Thank you, Thank You, and Thank you Again.
i love it when the first thing i see when clicking on your video is a aj and rarity figures
I seee those One Piece volumes in the back, my favorite anime! Glad to know I can trust your advice now XD
I've never played but I'm so interested. Great content, thanks a lot👌
Me and my friends are doing dnd in table top sim and it works great
Another great option if folks want to purchase it! I mainly focused on Roll20 as it's free and you don't need steam.
i love these camera angles and poses
Thanks for this video. I'v been watching a lot of D&D and wanted to play it but never knew where to start so this should get the ball rolling. Now all I have to do is get some friends...
I know this video is older but anyone watching the free download of the rules of how I got into d&d and it was the best thing ever. Me and 4 friends never played and we played for like 8 hours and stumbled our way from a meh campaign I made. But it was amazing for us cause I know my friends. Making your own campaign to begin with is a good way to get friends to jump into a role playing cause you know their personality better than the starter kit.
This video has helped me. I have my first D&D game tonight
Thank you for this video, I really wanted to get into this game, and couldn't figure it how to do it, thank you!
this was actually really informative :) DAM IT MARK YOU TALENTED GIT
Hahaha thank you? XD
A guy I’ve been liking he plays it and I’ve been wanting to learn more about dnd
this has been incredibly helpful, i've always been really interested in D&D and catching up on high rollers has been a great way to scratch that itch. but, of course, nothing beats the real thing, and this really helped break the ice on starting. thanks mark!
Best comment I could hope to receive! :D Glad it helped!
I just got in to D&D and this helped out a lot!
Hey Mark! DM'ing my first proper D&D 5E game now and am in my second session. Seems to be going really well so far! Using Roll20 and Mythweavers for sheets :D
Thanks for the info! Great starting point for me and my friends!
Great video. I want to start a group and DM for a first time! Nice OP shelf. I also got that Doffy figure
I had my first D&D session last Saturday, and my second one will be tomorrow :) I'm super hyped for it, and having this has just added to the hype and confidence for it, thanks Mark!
Have a blast Jess! :D
Hello Mark,
I'm about to start my first ever D&D 5e with friends.
Very nice and concise explanation. All we need to know! Keep it up Mark, looking forward to more!
Well done, Mark! Nice to see this coming together, and long may it continue!
Thanks pal! And thank you for the lanyard! :D
You're welcome!
That freaking ending...
Awesome work, Mark!
Hahaha glad people like it! ;)
I'm at uni and me and my friends use Roll 20 to try and play every week, we actually have several campaigns going simultaneously so we can be flexible if a DM can't make it
thank you I found this very helpful because I was trying to find the rules to play after school so could keep them in a binder
After watching Highrollers I got extremely inspired and started playing DND with my friends. Now thanks to some support from friends I am hosting my own one-off campaign and loving every minute my friends quaking in their boots at the coming madness
Awesome to hear Jacob! :D
great video! also great tips :) me and some new friends are going through this campaign now for our first adventure all thanks to you and the highrollers :D
4:30 i nearly shit myself it was so loud!! ahahaha
This is so awesome and helpful! I can't wait to actually put this information to use :D
Glad it was helpful! Thanks!
Mark, I command thee to do all parts of all videos in that pose.
Sorry man, got to save it to bust out for special occassions! ;P
You taunt me, sir. Taunt me with your body!
I'm thinking and saved enough money to buy it for Christmas. Love 80s games and I'm almost finished watching the cartoon
I've never played this game before but this game seems really fun so thank you for teaching me a bit about it. :)
Heyo Sherlock! Huge fan of High Rollers, just picked it up rather recently. Saw Mr. Mercer tweet about this channel. Good stuff!
I literally got an ad for Roll 20 right after he was done talking about it lol.
Thank you sooo much for this video. It really helped out and now I'm really looking forward to getting D&D to play with fam and friends! Thank you good sir. You have helped me out a great deal.
My pleasure friend!
I love this, great work Mark!
me and some buddies are going to start playing on saturday nights, My first time playing, and I'll be the DM.
That was hysterical shit at the end! But I appreciate the simplicity and clarity on the subject. 10/10 Thanks!
I have just ordered the starter set to play with my mates from uni! That's for the reccomendation
I’m jumping into a group that’s already playing so this wasn’t suuuper helpful for me but thank you for the tip about the website that gives you the rules. :)
i just got this set, thanks for the help to understand
With the amount of high rollers and critical role ive seen, along with matts GM tips im practically a DM master! However this is a very useful video to show people a good starting point. May i suggest the next video explain what modern dndis for those who dont know. It might introduce even more people. Also linking the High rollers story cant hurt for new people to see what its all about. Over all I loved it. Well done.
Im playing through "The Lost Mine of Phandelver" now as DM, It is amazing, and I would recommend it so much! Excited for it finishing and me making my own adventure!
Best of luck! Phandelver is fantastic, so glad you're using it and enjoying it! :D
awesome channel! In so happy i can see more of your snagging DND explanations! High rollers is awesome! I think it's due to the amazing Dm story telling... who knows? keep up the great content!
Never played a game of D&D yet, but this helped a TON! thx! also, i subscribed!!!
Glad you're enjoying D&D and wish you many great adventures to come!
Amazing! Have fun, friend! :D
Tabletop Weekly Thank you very much and I hope you keep these types of videos coming. A character creation walk through with a few explanations about key stats would be great to see btw.
And for anyone else reading this it isn't like I'm in a major city either, I'm up in the wilds of West Yorkshire.
I recorded a "How to make a character" TODAY and am going to start editing it ASAP. :)
Tabletop Weekly Nice one mate! I've passed a few videos on to some of the first timers and they also found them helpful. Keep it up, you are providing a great service to the D&D community.
