- Why did Rhaenys return to face Aemond? We finally saw the long-awaited first battle with dragons, where Meleys, Sunfiye, and Vhagar faced each other along with their riders. The dance has already begun, and in this battle, we saw how Rhaenys lost her life along with her dragon, Egg-on is badly wounded as well as Sunfire, while Aemond comes out of this first confrontation unscathed. But why did Rhaenys come back to face Aemond? What would you think if I told you that Rhaenys came back to avoid losing the opportunity to avenge the death of her grandson Lucerys?

Vhagar and Meleys are more closely matched than people realized. Vhagar is bigger, but also older and slower. Rhaenys took a chance at ending the war, simple as that
wrong. not closely matched at all.....Meleys only had speed on her side and more battle experience than the other dragons on team black. Vhagar is only slower when getting started but once she gets in gear she is fast too and it shows by how quickly she caught Meleys by he neck.

I think she really just wanted to protect her 2 surviving granddaughters and did it for them. If the war went on, her granddaughters were at risk of dying in the war.

I don't think your analysis of why Rhaenys chose not to retreat is accurate.
Rhaenys volunteered to take on the mission of supporting her allies...Her allies are still fighting on land, and if she were to retreat first, it would be extremely shameful. Rhaenys is the last hope for the allies fighting on this battlefield. Rhaenys knows that only her strength can counter Vhagar. Her sense of honor prevents her from abandoning her allies, who are still fighting and be the one whom flee first.. Also She cannot fail the queen to whom she is loyal. Thus, Rhaenys chose to stay and continue fighting with her allies until the very last moment. Came to support her allies and then abandoning them to die would be dishonorable at this moment.
But very much understandable. One cannot fight two dragons at once

Although she lost her life, she still managed to wound the dragon. The dragon is now vulnerable during the next battle. That was her sacrifice for the Queen
Vhagar wasn't injured, meleys claws couldn't cut deep enough to do any real damage, it was just a superficial scratch.

She returned hoping to inflict enough damage to Vhagar to take them out of the war. She knew she would die but it didn't matter. Meleys fought like a beast and may have had a chance to at least wound Vhagar had Aemond not gotten the jump from behind the castle. I honestly think getting Vhagar off the field is the only thing that matters at this point.

Nope. She made a mistake.
Remember she skillfully maneuvered to get close to hurt Vhagar ..... when she could clearly see where the dragon is. Burt she had lost sight of the dragon after the first clash .... when she turned around .... to finish off the wounded old dragon assumed to be fleeing.
Pretty sure Melys is larger than or similar in size to Caraxes. Both a bit larger than Sunfire. Maybe most important, both The Queen and The Wyrm are bound tight to their riders and very much at home in battle (With men, arrows, scorpion bolts anyway).

I think she knew she would die but sunfyre was down and she probably figured if she did enough damage do vhagar the war was basically over and green would likely have to surrender if vhagar can’t fight. She made a hero’s sacrifice in an effort to shorten the conflict and prevent more bloodshed.

She might have had a better chance has there not been 2, which no one, not even Cole predicted or planned. They might have been able to kill Vhagar when Daemon suggested teaming up but when he suggested it, she actually did not want to fight a war, she wanted to find a way to peace which is what she was suggesting to Rhanera. She is not blood thirsty and nor does she want a war of the dragons. But after Rhanera returned and told her what happened Rhaenys realized there's no way to peace and she has to fight this war.

She was one of my favorite characters. It was a gamble the Greens would've been pretty much done for if she killed Aemond and his dragon. The Blacks really don't have an ary at that point, not like the Greens. Rhaenys went out like a true boss. I will be glad to see Aemond burn with his dragon
Rhaenys was a woman of her word, and wanted to end this war. She knew she could harm and possibly kill the King. She knew she could possibly die. But, she was williing to take that chance. As the Klingons say, "Today is a good day to die". Sorry- wrong show. RIP Rhaenys. You will be missed by all.

I found myself yelling at my tv telling her to go after she got away from vhagar. But she didn't listen to me and bravely turned back and now she is dead. I'm upset cuz she was literally my favorite character.

Queen Who Never Was
Rhaenys was a more experienced dragon rider. While Aemond and Aegon attacked with fire, she approached from below letting Meleys claw Sunfire and Vhagar. If she didn't lose sight of Vhagar, it may have ended differently.
Rhaenys knew she was going to die as soon as she saw Vhagar coming into the battle. You could see it in her face. She was never going to flee the field of battle. It was always going to be a fight to the death. She went to defend the castle and its people and so couldn’t leave them to the mercy of Vhagar. Shame though, probably the most likable character.
She went back knowing she could've ended the war right then and there.
Team Black of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen from House Targaryen.
Meley's and Rhaenys sacrifice their lives for Rhaenyra and her cause to get what is hers. We may see her hard on Rhaenyra during her younger days and also when her son wedded the Princess turn into Queen.
She was really indeed the queen who never was. The stares between her and Meleys indicates that they will ride and die together.
I'm hoping that the Seasnake would not blame Rhaenyra for this Tragedy..
I almost cried because I can't imagine without her in HOTD. Baella would surely avenged her.

quite stupid and illogical of the show runners. Rhaenyra would have been happy to hear they disabled Aegon and Sunfyre, that would have left the Greens with only Vhagar and if she had escaped, Meleys and Caraxes could have easily taken on Vhagar and won for sure.

One of the major reasons she didn't run was because criston and the green army were still alive. If she left before killing criston and Aemond, the greens wouldve taken rooks rest. Protecting Lord staunton was the entire reason she came rooks rest, so leaving and allowing the greens to capture it would have made her coming pointless.

Hell no, there’s no killing Vhagar in a 1v1 battle. It’s just impossible. You’ve to be a badass warrior like Daemon in order to handle that much weight. Rhaenys was tied for 2nd with Rhaenyra as my fav characters bcuz Daemon is my #1. Even if she were to do what u said, I’m sure Vhagar would’ve survived. You’ve to get the surprise attack on Vhagar to kill her bcuz she’s a huge beeotch lmfao.

My thoughts exactly. Daemon serrated her l and Rhaenrya struggled to keep the peace, a peace that would have never been interrupted if Rhaenys hadn't hesitated when she had the entire Green side dead to rights. I knew as soon as she tethered herself to Meleys, she was willing to die fighting. Rhaenys the Queen that never was, stood on business.
She just blundered a huge military advantage for no real reason. The Greens already have less dragons and now the Blacks not only traded equally but lost their biggest dragon so far. I know it was in the books and had to happen but i dont believe she would be so stupid. She just kinda "forgot" to fight another day 😂

Daemon wasn't wrong but neither was Rhaenys. Rhaenys doesn't want a war between dragons. When Viserys was chosen over here she didn't put up a fight, she just accepted it and held no bitterness towards Viserys, she might have had resentment towards the sexism of the system but not at Viserys personally. That's the kind of person she is. She chooses peace. She doesn't have the aggressiveness that Daemon has, but Daemon also has a personal hate towards the Hightowers. Had Rhaenys killed all of the hightowers at the coronation she woulda gone down in history as the most infamous villainous kinslayer.
Only she & Daemon ... were experienced enough to kill Vhagar. She simply made a mistake ... losing sight of the grounded & wounded old dragon ... and had assumed it was fleeing
look in real-life, people withdraw all the time, it made no sense for Rhaenys to have remained there. At that point, she had done well, she disabled Sunfyre and Aegon, that was a victory in and of itself and Rhaenyra would have been happy with the outcome. It was quite foolish, unneccesary and illogical for her to turn back and face Vhagar. She knew she would lose, Meleys knew she was no match for Vhagar yet somehow Rhaenys preferred to turn back, the show makes no sense in this regard.
Actually he did realized she had a chance. Aemond was not experienced. She just took down Vhagar while battling Sunfyre. Plus she was not afraid to die in the process . like a Kamikaze.

U gotta remember that it has already been written in the books that they all die. A lot of the characters & basically all of the dragons except for 2 all dies my friend. In the books Vhagar/Aemond swoops down & takes them both out while they was busy fighting with each other Meleys/Rhaenys vs Sunfyre/Aegon so at least on the show the queen that never was Rhaenys & the most beautiful dragon on the show Meleys went out honorably imo R.I.P.🙏🙏🙏💯💯💯
how do you come to the conclusion that she was no match for Vhagar? it 50-50 chance, biggest dragon of the black team that is younger and faster vs Vhagar. your analysis the soldier mentally maybe wrong.
She seized two unexpected opportunities to prevent a potential war and thereby persent herself as a true Queen.
I think it was a combination of things. She probably did feel a little bit of guilt from fleeing the coronation because of the way Daemon had to rub it in her face, but mainly she probably just wanted to try to end the war and knew she would die giving it her all.
I think it had to do also with Vaghar. She lost both her daughter and grandson to this dragon. She also was upset with her husband. That scene with her husband had significance that will probably play out later. Plus she knew and has stated she was expendable. She had the next biggest dragon. She held her ground but Aemond used the similar sneak attack. The Green’s army were cutting down trees and I believe it was to be helpful for their dragon who strategically wait in the woods. The Red Queen, The Queen Who Never Was dragon’s nickname is faster, more agile and has battle experience. This is known. The King putting himself in the line of fire was the only thing that was unexpected. Everything else was going as planned. Damon’s whereabouts were known so it was the perfect opportunity in terms of a war strategy.
Dragon combat is all about angles and blindside attacks. We see Meleys do the same thing twice on sunfyre.
I'm sorry that was dumb. Vhagar was injured. Sunfire and Aegon were more than likely dead if not, surely out of the fight. The attack was halted. Maeleys was injured but still faster then Vhagar. She should have regrouped back to Dragon Stone. Instead she turns into a kamikaze pilot? They could have atleast had some compelling reason for her to turn back around. To save a life or even exploiting a temporary advantage... like making sure Aegon was dead. Maybe i'm bitter she was one of my favorite characters but I think her death should have meant more.
It's the heart of a warrior to die in battle than retreat or shame. From the get go, the Blacks knew that there's a high chance many of them will die for staying true to their heart/allegiance

@@sudukohustler I get it but, I am thinking tactical use of dragons and strategies they could use. Especially with their numerical advantage. Like have a second high above monitoring as a look out or for rescue. What she did was akin to su1c1de. You play to your advantages in war. Speed not strength was her advantage. MMA fighters have a warriors spirit but they still move when someone tries to hit them. They still tap out when choked. She fought a good fight. She took out one of their 3.... Now RUN! You could be right But... I'm in my feelings.
Wrong. She a top dragonrider along with Daemon ... and expertly approached Vhagar, wound her and force her to the ground.
Here mistake ... was losing SIGHT .... of Vhagar and assumed the dragon was fleeing and as she flew over the Castle in pursuit of the "wounded" Dragon she was surprised by the counterattack.
If she can see where Vhagar is ... she can attack and hurt her. But if she does not know where Vhargar is, then she will be attacked (ambushed). She needed to have Vhagar in sight at all time .. to devised the best way to attack or to defend.

She had 2 chances to use her advantage of speed and flee. She wouldn't have needed to see where Vhagar was if she was far ahead. Did you see Aemon chasing her? NO! he was going to kill Aegon. You said it was a mistake I agree... a mistake on the part of the writers who didn't think it through. There are many compelling ways they could have used to make it make sense. But okay yeah... they wrote in a mistake that completely ignores the base human instinct of survival. GREAT THEORY!

The interaction between her & her Dragon (Meley’s) was well done, as if her Dragon knew it was a suicidal attack..especially being older and well seasoned in battle. Well done.

I think you're spot-on with your reasoning, although I think it'd have made a lot more sense for her to race back to either Dragonstone or Harrenhall for back-up. Her dragon would've left Grandma Vahgar behind.
Despite the hundreds or thousands she killed when Meleys burst through the dragon-pit, Rhaenys was probably my favourite character overall.
She would definitely leave Vhagar in the dust. Meleys is the fastest dragon. Also when she returned to (try and) finish it Aemond was actually on his way to kill Aegon so she could've fled to get back up.
Everyone suggests that Rhaenys had the opportunity to escape but chose not to. Since Damion and Cole’s plan was precisely to lure out the dragon(s) and have Vhagar ambush them, Damion would not have let Rhaenys fly off without a fight. I believe Rhaenys was well aware there would be no turning back and chose to make her brave life or death stand then and there.
She truly was the best choice for leadership. Now all hell will break lose. But that is what we are here for.
Aegon's dragon, Sunfyre kissed him goodbye before he saddled him at the dragon pit, but that likka still told him to mount and ride...
I know its not in the books but had she just left. She leaves the Greens with 2 dragons versus the Blacks 5. Also the "King" is either slain or severly injured. This would demoralize Hightower supporters over to Rhaenyras side.
Going back only opens up the chance to lose a dragon and give the Greens something to rally behind with their supporters. Which is exactly what happens.
I’m gonna miss her
It's crazy to think that If she ended up being queen after Jaherys non of these events would've unfolded. The dragons would've never died, the blackfyre rebellions (all two of them) would've never happened, Robert's rebellion most likely would've never happened, and the white walkers would've been obliterated.

She tried to get two for one. From her point of view, Sunfyre and Aegon are dead. If she took out Aemond and Vhaegar, the Greens wouldn’t have any chance at winning. All they would have left are Daeron and his dragon. Helena is to grieve stricken and inexperienced to even think about fighting with her dragon. The Dance would’ve ended as quickly as it began.

A thought I had... she also understood that whoever replaced Aegon would be a MASSIVE upgrade for the Greens. Cyclops & Dragon Hulk were the biggest (literally & figuratively) pieces in the Blacks way, at that moment.

I think taken in account for Vhagars size, they need to stop sending single dragons. Also it was obvious this was a trap. Cole had been hiding in the dark and attacking then suddenly he's out in the daytime in full view of the sky. Why did no one think this is suspicious
I feel like she knew she would die anyway, so she damaged Vhagar as best she could. She went out with a dragon rider's death. She should have been Queen. She dies honorably.

This is the first of many battles that will cripple the king irreversibly...also shows the people on the ground that just one decent dragon alone is enough to threaten their entire opposition (they watched the mighty vhagar fall as well). Wouldn't exactly say she didn't accomplish anything.

She should have been crowned. She would have been the wisest choice. I knew this was coming, I read the book. I think Meleys did have a chance against Vhagar (Vhagar is very slow, something his rider must be aware of in his strategy) but Rhenys knew she would die there when she turned around to face Vhagar.
Vhagar is huge but she didn’t see war in a very long time unlike Caraxes & Daemon I cannot wait to see how that battle will be cause im not gone lie rhaenys dragon did good she was beating vhagar ass for a lil minute lol but Caraxes is different he is one of those crazy killing dragons he earned that name the blood wyrm for a reason vhagar I love you & aemond but yall time is coming

Ah I am so so sad about Rheanys death! I agree she was motivated to not show fear and to avenge her nephews demise due to inaction when she had the chance. But she didn’t want to be the one who started this terrible war. She said nothing more devastating and bloody than a war with dragons! I wish she would have gone back for help! Why did they let her go Alone in the first place???? I still do not understand that! Had to process her sacrifice. Rheanyra has lost her best and closest family member and ally! I feel a deep hole now in the plot! Who can take her place in the family? And in our hearts and in the show!! She was the Strongest ally Rheanyera had! I think she thought she could possibly stop the war before anyone else had to die, and that is courageous, but also stupid . The war itself is a bigger picture, and she and her Dragon were important to Rheanrya . Deamon was possibly right again. When he mentioned her and Meleys and Caraxes have more of a chance taking Vhagar down together.
She had already deeply injured if not killled SunFyre leaving the greens with only Vhagar and DreamFyre but with the conditions Helena is in she is the only one that can ride DreamFyre . She truly should have used her head and. Or her emotions.
I haven't watched you're video yet but want to leave my theory before I press play. I figure she knows that if Vaghar lives, there is no chance of winning the war or she already sees the war as lost and wants to die as a dragon rider. edit - also, maybe she regretted not going with Daemon earlier to kill the old bitch. Say what you will about the guy but his dragon and the red queen could have handled her.

Helaena is like the dragons. They are innocent casualties in this war. Helaena lost a child and gets no support from her husband/brother.

Remember this is a TV dramatisation. In the book she was lured into the trap and ambushed by Vhagar and Aemond, she never had the chance to escape. With Aegon and Sunfyre down in the show she should have bolted for Dragonstone. She waits for Daemon to return and then they could double team Vhagar in future engagements.
Rhaenys also knew the Greens were winning even before the battle of Rooks Rest, if for no other reason than they were on the offensive, growing their strength, and had a plan. Rhaenys admired the attempt to stop the war, but she also saw how the Blacks were in disarray while the enemy grew stronger. The mistake was going alone and believing victory was simply a matter of force. She and everyone else on team Black failed to realize they were facing not just a strong enemy, but a cunning enemy. Their failure to see this allowed Rhaenys to fly right into a trap. The plot twist of Aegon's fate is irrelevant to the war, because the Greens were planning and waging the war without him anyway.
She should have known Vhagar could only use a sneak attack to catch her. She should’ve tired out Vhagar by out maneuvering her. Then she could have attacked from behind and torched Aemon or knocked him off his dragon.
I also think she was too smart to make it so easy. Rhaenera should have anticipated that this was a trap and used numbers to take out a Vhagar. The greens only have 2 Dragons to fight with and even a small dragon would make a big difference if they worked t
She simply made a mistake ...losing sight ... of Vhagar after expertly forcing the old girl to the ground. She assumed Vhagar was fleeing and had blindly turned to pursue her. Huge mistake.
When you send your biggest weapon you send it with backup and overwhelming force. Vhagar is the slowest dragon so all the dragons should be able to escape her attacks. And make hit and run attacks to her under belly and back.
It's not that hard people.
She knew she would very likely die, but she also knew If she was lucky enough and took down Aemond she had single-handedly ended the war then and there and spared the kingdom of all that was to come. She had already passed the opportunity to do so once.
She is an experienced dragon rider with the second strongest dragon in the world, even if she couldn't kill Vhagar herself, killing Aemond or managing to hurt Vhagar enough to put her out for a while would effectively leave the Greens defenseless.
She thought she had a chance (and she did) and took it.
Meleys showed a strong bond and loyalty, she is no stranger to war. She was fearless, took two dragons.
It was a matter of honor, both personal and to Rhaenyra. If Rhaenys had abandoned the battlefield while Vhagar was still able to fight, it would have made Rhaenyra look weak, cowardly, and untrustworthy as both a queen and an ally. The same applies for Rhaenys herself (especially as a female leader once denied the Iron Throne). Win or lose, she had to fight to the end. There was no other choice.
Probably in the heat of moment she lost the bigger picture in mind. Sunfyer was injured with Aegon that was a win with that she should have returned and reported the vulnerability of kings landing as well as the ambush attempt by vhagar and aemond which would have allowed a better strategy for the blacks.
Why didn’t they take two dragons to the fight? If the enemy brought no dragon it would be quick work. If they did, it would give them better chance of victory.
Cuz Daemon went missing in Harenhall on his own thing. If he was there was Caraxes, definitely woulda won. Jacerys dragon is not very strong and too young, Syrax has never been to battle and if Rhaenera dies, well their entire cause dies. Caraxes was the only option but Daemon is doing his own selfish thing.

Poor dragon kept tryin to dip out and she kept turning back. That look she gave to rhaenys as it died was like "u fucking old croan, i did not agree to this kamikaze bullshit". pointless death, and she didnt even get Aegon, turns out he's alive and his dragon too. No wonder they ran out of dragons, cos they were just willing to throw them away as if they were expendable. U would think, if there were less than 20 dragons left in existence, that both sides would agree to use them only as a last resort or better yet, not at all. They shoulda treated them like nuclear deterrents, instead of horses. Also i expected way more in terms of tactics. They just charged at each other like they were duelling on horseback. They shoulda been fighting at a much higher altitude and attacking from above and below, from blind spots and using cloud cover for hit n run attacks against a much bigger slower vhagar. Its like the writers have never seen a single dogfight between fighter jets. They had plenty of tactical fighting vs the night king in the long night season 8 ep 3. Where was all that? How did three noobies had didn't even have freakin saddles on their dragons manage to fight with infinitely better strategy than veteran dragon riders? one of them being an old war vet (rhaenys) with i would assume yrs of training. Yet they just charged head on at each other like 2 idiots in a duel and fell from the sky like 2 pigeons having sex. Fucking "Red Tails" had better battles than this

Rhaenys and Meleys' death was a blow to the Blacks, but in reality, it was a major blow to the Targaryens. As the oldest living Targaryen, she tried to stop the civil war and wanted to save both wings of her ancient Valyrian house. She knew that no one would win, but the Targaryens would lose everything in this battle.
Once she'd already felled King Aegon and Sunfire, the best move now was to flee with a huge victory for her side.
Better strategy, but less drama for the show.
No lie, I didn’t care for her in the beginning but she definitely grew on me. The way she went out….. man!!! She went out gangsta. She could have left but she turned back around and said “ let’s go to war”. She definitely did damage.
She is by far my most favourite character. Very dignified, wise, and long suffering woman.
It could've been that Rhaenys didn't want to risk being chased down by Aemon and Vhagar while Meleys was wounded. Might as well turn around, stand your grownd than fly off exhausted and guarantee a loss. Fight or flight. She chose to fight. She was ambushed, so if she was going to die, dhe might as well die fighting.
So if you think she was a fool, you're actually the fool who doesn't know how to "read the room."
Melys looked back at her when Vhagar was grounded . The look to me was like “ are we going to run or finish this “… she acknowledged the look and turned around .
For those wondering why she didn't run away...this is called courage. She didn't want to run away and put her tail between her legs.

The first time, she tried to test her dragon against Vhaegar, but she saw it was bigger and she can't beat Aemond. As a smart Princess like she used to be, I thought she would go and ask for help, I thought maybe Damon would join the fight...
She decided to comeback knowing she will die, and Rhaenyra's team loosing one of the biggest dragons (Maelys), such a waste and a suicidal end...Very frustrating.
I really don't understand why she didn't fled. This time it was something completely different from that than it broke out. In turn, she could have killed everyone because there was no other dragon nearby. But to record it with Vhagar, especially where he even left her alone. Better back and then try it again with one or more other dragons. That was simply senseless her death, in my eyes.
I very much appreciate you saying that she feels guilty for Lucerys' death and wants to avenge him. I watch several other recaps and analysis, and they all have various stupid reasons for why she returned to the fight. But if you pay attention to her reaction and body language every time his death is mentioned, you can clearly see her regret and guilty feelings. This is why I like your content better than the others
How do we know that King aegon is not dead
I know that if anyone or anything hurts any one of my grandchildren there will be nowhere on Earth to hide from me. Rhaenys did exactly what I would do.
