Triple Headed HST at Reading

Поделиться
HTML-код
  • Опубликовано: 9 апр 2012
  • Both power cars 1A83 1000 Penzance - Paddington failed somewhere in Somerset, so another pair of power cars were summoned from Laira TMD to tow the train to Reading. It was cancelled at Reading and formed 5A83 Reading - Old Oak Common empty stock. 10/4/12.
    Sorry for the all caps title. It's just too important.
    This is a re-upload due to the visual glitch around 1:10 when the HST is leaving.

    Most steam and single diesel engine hauled trains had to be piloted over Dainton Bank. IIRC only Kings and Westerns were allowed unassisted. A single HST power car is somewhat lacking BHP wise compared to a Western, plus it has to try and provide power sapping ETH too.

  • @TheMicksterdee

    THere are two possible reasons for this combination. Firstly, the train power cars may have had a traction problem and as no locomotive may have been present a pair of HST power cars were used or, (more likely) it was a positioning move to get a pair of power cars to Old Oak Common TMD without requiring an additional train path. Additional train paths cost money!

With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more..

    So in normal operation it has distributed power (power car at each end of the train), but since the locomotives failed and it had to be rescued, it had power only at the front of the train. Does that reduce efficiency?

    • @morph-
      @morph- 7 месяцев назад

      It had 2 PCs at one end, then one idling for aux power at the other, so i doubt it would reduce efficiency that much, however it would probably decrease acceleration.

    Great capture, that's certainly something you don't see everyday!! Good video footage but did you ever find why they were set up like this? Surely must have been a reason for this set up. Nearest to this I've seen is 2 HST power cars coming into Plymouth with just 1 coach in between them. Found out it was due to a 'Naming Ceremony' that was taking place the leading power car (43149) was to be named 'University Of Plymouth' so they carried out the naming ceremony at Plymouth Station
