  • While performing for the troops at Camp Arifjan, kuwait every Soldier suddenly stopped laughing, stood up and turned away from Robin Williams. It's an experience, he'll never forget. This was a combined team effort by three public affairs units and civilian contractors. I was the one to get it to David Letterman. That video is posted here too.

This was a typical Robin moment: deep down inside of his hilarious exterior was a gentle compassionate man. Once he heard the alarms go off, he didn’t know what was going on. But once he saw how everyone turned around from his set, he immediately read the room and took his hat off in solidarity. He looked so earnest and grounded just standing there as the alarm went off. Then, once the alarm stopped and everyone turned back around, in typical Robin fashion, all the seriousness was gone and he turned the impromptu moment into a laughing moment. I miss the man so much 💔

If you are visiting an active military base overseas and, all of the sudden, you hear a unfamiliar sound followed by every single soldier turning around to face the direction of where the sound is coming from, the smart thing to do is to stay quiet and wait until everything goes back to normal. Robin removing his hat might have been either his subconscious telling him that it was the right thing to do or a defensive action by trying to make himself seem smaller and not important.

My favorite part about this video happens after all of the chaos from the retreat subsides, when Robin is later explaining what was going on in his head at the time the horns sounded, spiraling into one of his trademark tangents; yet then, quietly, he turns to one of the soldiers, places a hand on him gently, and asks, honestly concerned, if the soldier had gotten the photo he'd asked for. In that small, brief moment, we see the truly compassionate, kind-hearted human being he was. Anyone can tour military bases overseas for publicity and praise, and some celebrities have done just that, but in that moment he proves he did so because he truly cares about these people. It is a small, but telling detail that the camera often misses.
I am so saddened by his loss, and the tragedy of how this amazing man was fighting a demon even larger than his immense personality, even darker than the light his humor sparked in all of us. I only wish Robin Williams had someone like himself to bring him the joy he brought to all of us, rescuing some of us from our own demons. Maybe he would have been able to stick around for a while longer, keeping the shadows at bay for the rest of us.

The last time I heard it was in 2004 at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait while availing myself of the services of your fine hospitality on a spot of R n R from Iraq. As I was in uniform I felt a salute was in order and began to wonder why we Brits don’t salute our own flag.

Andy . As an air cadet (ATC) in the mid to late 70s we visited some RAF bases and they had the turn and face the flag pole when the flag was being taken down thing. I just sort of assumed (TBH, never really thought of it ) all services in all camps/barracks/bases would do it .
Come to think of it later on (I was TA [engineers]) there was no flag raising/lowering ceremonies that I was aware of.

Had nothing but great things to say about the man - genuinely kind and considerate, always willing to meet with his fans and spend some quality time with them. He didn't like most of the celebrities he worked with because of their crap attitudes but he adored Robin and one or two others, and that's it.

One thing I'd like to add though about celebrities: I feel like we give some of them too hard a time about their egos. Hear me out. They have spent untold amounts of time being told how amazing they are, and it being *proven to them* how popular and so on they are...you should expect their egos to grow in relation to that. I'm not saying we give every one of them a pass, some of them are entirely unreasonable, especially the truly f'ing awful ones, but at the same time, some allowance should be made, after all they're no less a product of their environment than the rest of us.

As good as his personal visit was to the morale of our troops, imagine what it did to the morale of the enemy if they knew this hilarious genius of a man in all his harmless and peaceable behavior stood upon the ground over there and helped people laugh. . . And at that moment he was 100% safe, he could say and do what he wanted and the combined military of our enemy could do nothing to him, they could not even look at him without having permission. Most Marines you see walking the sidewalks stair down at it so they don't have to salute any stickers on cars. This one night I saw Marines jogging and walking as I was headed out down Holcomb Blvd. All of a sudden, they all stopped faced the same direction and saluted. I was dumbfounded but aware enough to pull my car over and step out and face the same direction. I watched as they lowered the flag and played the Retreat Call. I will never forget that. For the non military persons. The guy who yelled "Retreat" was actually correct. Reveille is the bugle call first thing in the MORNING. "To the Colors" also known as "Retreat" is the bugle call when lowering the flag at the end of the day. So to call it "Retreat" is technically correct. It's incorrect to call it "Reveille". That only occurs when the flag is being raised or to awaken and summon people in a camp or garrison at the beginning of the day.

Yea I was pretty young for Steve Irwin and that one fucked me up because it was my dream job to work at the Australia Zoo 🇦🇺 and maybe even meet him, and my hero and chances of that happening were dashed away at one time. Bowie hit me hard too but he got to write his goodbye letter to everyone with his last album. Bourdain was rough because he was a person who always talked about his depression not letting him get out bed, and overcoming it, but it took him in the end and it felt kinda hopeless for a minute for people who struggle with that. Robin still is sore for me, my sisters and I were obsessed with him and even got into LOZ because of him (Which was just my baby sister and I watching my older sister play OOT and MM) it was another real let down of someone who openly struggled losing the battle, but then I watched Bobcat tearfully talking about why Robin did it and him wanting to leave this world as Robin Williams which was quickly fading from his Parkinsons variant, it matured my idea of why people do take their own lives. Although I will NEVER condone it, I can now come at it with a more understanding perspective.

Saw him live 2x during his Weapons of Mass Destraction tour, before then after his heart surgery. Was good, but Live on Broadway and Night at the Met was what had me howling and punching my couch, and needing to take a asthma inhaler 3 times in 5 minutes.

At 1:17 he puts his head down and you see his face is somber, and this is after the military has presented arms. Makes me wonder what was on his mind at that point. I figured that was the moment he understood what we do. Great guy! Saw him in Afghanistan.
