I had the same issue on a 2015, thanks for the video. Here's what I went through maybe it will help some of your viewers. First I had bought a new inside brake control switch and it did not fix the issue. I then replaced the controller above the spare (like in your video) and the problem was resolved. ALSO - The red clip is only intended to pull up, not out. It is locked in from pulling up by the grey tab. So theres a couple sequences to go through. With a small screwdriver I gently lifted the grey tab, and at the bottom of the connector there's a little hole push a pin or small nail inside it while lifting the grey tab will help pop the red tab up. Once again just pull it up not out. Once the red pin is up you can now press the grey tab in, which unlocks the locking tab at the bottom of that connector inside that hole. I used a very small screwdriver in the bottom hole to help unlock the grey tab lock and then pulled the connector straight off. The connector tabs and all locks were reusable no zip ties needed. Good luck!

I have a 2018 Denali one ton with diesel. I carry a camper and tow a boat with surge brakes. I have two new issues…..the trailer brake service message with the annoying tone and now a low antifreeze warning. I have watched three hours of videos on the trailer brake warning and I must say that the input of all persons who comment on these videos collectively is much better info than what I have learned from my dealership. My problems are intermittent…..you know how that occurs, you get the warning and pull into the GMC service bay and when they come to look, everything is normal! Watching everyone’s videos, I have learned to suspect the controller, check battery cables and fuses, check the junction plugs above the spare tire, check the trailer cable plug (both male and female plugs) and check the red and white wire that runs under the cab to the rear junctions above the spare tire. That is a lot of very fragile parts on a heavy duty truck!
Thank you everyone who has made videos and researched these problems. With your approach to problem solving, you will come up with fixing GM’s problems a long time before they do!
For you with the low antifreeze warning, it appears to be in the “second” overflow tank which is located under the primary overflow tank. The bottom tank has a relay that fails and has to be replaced. Good luck everyone.

Jim, following your instructions here, was able to stop the warning indicator. Drive it around for 30 minutes and no warnings. I won’t call it done until I have a week or so without the warning. Thanks for sharing this information. It is appreciated.

(2014 Sierra) Thanks for the warning about the red clip but it broke anyway. I think it's almost designed to break when its removed. Just a heads-up. make sure you are wearing some kind of glasses when doing this because there is a ton of dust/dirt behind the module and it will fall into your eyes. I didn't notice that there was a lot if any dirt in the connector but when I pulled the entire module off there was a lot of dust on the back surface. It appears to be thin aluminum (perhaps for heat transfer) that is caked in what seems to be corroded aluminum dust and I'm just guessing the heat is unable to dissipate with all the crud causing the error.
Anyway, I didn't take of the other module above the trailer brake module I just removed the trailer brake module and cleaned the dust off. Zipped tied the connector :-) and just drove the truck 200 km and not a single error.
Thank you for your tutorial, it has no doubt saved me a ton of headaches and a lot of money.

i searched everywhere to find a video on how to remove the module plug without breaking locking tab. i noticed most don't show that part or they do show it and clearly break the tab and pretend it didn't happen.. mine broke. used zip ties like you. thanks for video

  • @forthegibsons
    @forthegibsons 3 года назад

I forgot to add, I didn’t break the red tab thingy. Just put a flat screwdriver against it and popped the heel of the screwdriver with the palm of my hand and it raised up. Went back into place once I had cleaned everything up. I realize I was probably just lucky but I’ll take it. Thanks for the video. It was very helpful.

It seems to work. One day without the warning. I did add some dielectric grease and replaced/re-taped the wires going to the connector. I also used some "Liquid" electrical tape where the wires go into the connector. Maybe this will help from "crap getting in there. Oh Yea, I left the connector lock in-tacked. THANKS

Have a 2014 Silverado. Last year I was receiving this error message when driving uphill/downhill. I topped off the brake fluid to resolve.
Started to receive the message again this year, but seemed to be more affected by warmer temperatures. I used the shop vac to clean the fine dust that was collected in the brake control module as shown in the video. It's been about a month and have not seen a re-occurrence of the error message.

Jackpo25 Definitely affected by temp. Mine never does it when above 60. Soon as it drops below that, it goes nuts. I tried cleaning it and it helped for a while, but the problem returned. I suspect a bad circuit board solder point, which probably contracts when cooled and causes an intermittent connection. Probably have to replace the module.

Yesterday plugged up an empty trailer for the first time and not all the lights on the trailer worked and am not sure if the brake worked. Being an empty trailer I wasn't too concerned with the brakes yet. Connected to a truck known to work properly and trailer is good. Have you connected to a trailer to check that this fix actually fixed the problem and not just clear the message?

Bad on GM/Chevy to design a system that is so vulnerable to a little dirt getting in the works. I will go out and give this solution a try on my truck. Has anyone taken the additional step of trying to protect the plug-unit connection from further grime intrusion? Would heat shrink tubing be a good idea? Does it come in a large enough diameter to fit over both the side of the module and the plug?

Ok, went ahead and did the fix. The modules snap together with the data cable, and the snaps are held together with this little infernal red toothpickish thing. It has to be lifted carefully with a little pin or something (other than one's fat fingers), before the snap connection will release. Push it too hard, and it snaps right in half. Ah well. Got the units back together, started up the truck, and continued to get the warning bells and the problem message. Don't be discouraged! After driving on for a bit, all the annoyance stopped. I hope it does not come back. Thank you to the OP.

Great video. It is the single most annoying sound in the world. Question if I tow .0001% of the time could I not just pull the fuse on the towing package and enjoy sweet silence for the 99.999% of the time I drive the truck?

Nice job with the video and protecting your privacy by covering your plate. Don’t know why more people aren’t concerned about posting their license plate number online.

See I feel the opposite, I find covering your license plate to be of absolute no use and everyone just does it because they see other people doing it , kind of like with the mask wearing now , your license plate is literally public info already, it’s literally on your vehicle as you drive around for everyone to see lol, give me one good reason that’s not completely retarded for doing this , and I’ll admit I am wrong …..

what's really sad is GM is aware of this safety-critical defect, and yet over the last 10 years it still hasn't been remedied. if you guys have spare time, please file a complaint www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem and maybe we can get a recall so they have to reimburse us for these repairs
