- Written by Don Von Tress. The Marcy Brothers released "Don't Tell My Heart" on their second (self-titled) studio album, on July 9, 1991 on Atlantic Records. This song would later become a five-week Number One on the country charts in 1992 when Billy Ray Cyrus recorded it under the title "Achy Breaky Heart".
Special thanks to Luc Goossens for audio supply.
My entire life is a lie. I thought the Spanish cover was the original, and then was shocked when Cyrus was the “original” .Now I’m finding out Cyrus was covering it as well? Jesus
Music is an expression of "nothing new under the sun." Its beautiful! I wonder who the Marcy Brothers covered/were influenced by.
Is Payaso del rodeo an original?
Rn I'm in shock too ._.
Lol. Believe it or not, the Oak Ridge Boys were the first to get their hands on it and turned it down.
Same here!
I bet these are pissed that the same song was released one year later by billy ray Cyrus and received such huge success. Just think we wouldn’t have Miley Cyrus if it wasn’t for this song
Wait...what? Billy Ray's was a COVER? I swore that was an original. Mind...blown.
Man 92 had to have been a tough year for these guys. Imagine recording a song for your album and no one cares and then a year later some other guy makes a slightly poppier version of it and becomes a global phenomenon.
I came here to hear the difference and I can't quite place why Cyrus' version is so much better. Don Von Tress himself said because these guys say "Achy Breaking". I personally think Cyrus has a better, more country voice and his version has a much longer solo and post solo bit.
I know right!
this is a lot closer to southern rock than billy Ray's cover
Way Better than Cyrus.
Billy rays version is like someone taking a photo of a painting...
omg This is the best analogy!!!
100% true, but Billy Ray's version is much better.
Funk O'Matic this version is 10x’s better than billy ray cyrus’s cover... yep, smy pinion
Always thought their version was always better.
The guitar solos............. jeezus.
"Don't tell my heart, my egg and bacon heart."
VicGeorge2K6 it’s “my achy breakin’ heart” not “my egg and bacon heart”
Woosh!
@@royalzavala8545 that's the joke idiot
@@royalzavala8545 😂😂😂😂 easy baby,,,

the songwriter is the winner.
I was today years old...
I actually learned two things today.
First, I learned that my guy William Raymond Cyrus (never really thought about _that_ before, huh? There's also an actor named William Robert Thornton) wasn't the original singer.
Then, I came here, and I learned that when the song was written, the original lyric was
"But don't tell my heart,
My achy, _breaking_ heart..."
...apparently the change to "Achy _Breaky_ Heart" was the one genius change that skyrocketed this to number one on the country charts the very next year.
...and just spare a thought for the poor Marcy Brothers, who I had never heard of (I was 5 in 1991, and remember a _lot_ of the country music that was on the radio then), and will now always remember as "the guys who didn't make a hit out of Achy Breaky Heart." 😂
Achy Breakin 'Heart

Yes, that was the original title.
Thanks for adding that, I meant to include it; I honestly thought I had.

Obey Obey yeah well king of the hill send me here 0:11 and create remix duet(with billy ray cyrus )
@@zpozuniverse4562 king of the hill also brought me here
i grew up on Billy Ray's cover and liked it, but discovering this original made me love this ever more...think i'm a sucker for harmonies like these guys made to this song :)
I grew up on Billy Ray’s cover as well.
The guitar solos are definitely superior in this one,
They sing "Achy Breakin' Heart" in the chorus but Billy changed it to Achy Breaky, guess that's more catchy and rhyme-y
ChronoShenron well to be honsestly if you ask me you should create a (0:11-2:53)duet between the marcy brothers and Billy Ray cyrus (prodiced by his daughter Miley cyrus)
+Eric Lee Actually, the Billy Ray Cyrus version has the lyrics intact. It's originally offered to The Oak Ridge Boys, who it turned down after the lead singer didn't like the words "Achy Breaky." When offered to the Marcy Brothers, they changed the lyrics and song title.
+ZPOZ UNIVERSE Not happening.
Eric, the studebakers changed the title to Achey Breaky Heart

Achy Breaky Heart" is a song written in 1990 by Don Von Tress. Originally published in a recording by The Marcy Brothers under the title "Don't Tell My Heart" in 1991, it was later recorded by Billy Ray Cyrus and released on his debut album Some Gave All in 1992.

This song got my dad inspired for his parody song called ranky stanky fart
Beautiful 🙌
I dig it

You're not the only one who's dad was inspired
I think that the gents over at Parody Project parodied the Billy Ray Cyrus version
Why does this remind me of a sitcom from the 90s
Kiderino X From South Park
Because it's a 90s song that sounds almost similar to the full house theme song.
I found out these brothers have no hard feelings for Billy Ray Cyrus for covering their song and became an international hit.
It wasn't their song. It's Don Von Tress' song. The song always belongs to the songwriter. Anyone who covers it has to pay him.

Or, the songwriter. Don Von Tress liked Billy's version better.
At the end of 1987 we had Taylor Dane singing "Tell It To My Heart". And just a few years later we hear the exact opposite...
Atte, "Tell it to my heart" is a Completely different song than " Don't Tell My Heart "
Holy shit, I'm a big fan of Achy Breaky Heart, and I just discovered this after reading the wikipedia page of the song, all my life is a fucking lie
The Wikipedia page was named after Cyrus' version instead of this one too...

Yoy all do the best version. When Billy Ray released his version I had all the country fans in the office listen to your version. They agreed you all's was the best.
They have nothing on Billy Ray
If this had been a hit in 1991, there would have been no "country" star Billy Ray Cyrus...and therefore, no "pop star" Hannah Montana, or "twerk star" Miley Cyrus collaborating with Wayne Coyne. What path would popular music - and pop culture - have taken had this song NOT been covered by Billy Ray? Well worth contemplating.....
Riiight.......
+exexalien Goes right up there with: What if Kurt Cobain got therapy instead of a guitar? The '90s would've been allot happier time... At-least for me.
I would've been the "twerk star" considering I'm Kevins daughter. Lol
LA ORIGINAL! QUE BIEN!
What I have found amusing about the Billy Ray Cirus version is that he is singing it in a deep, manly voice. This original version the vocals and instruments are as camp as the lyrics and strange is not as interesting to me as the BRC deadpan version.
Who came from x-files?
+Isuru Madusanka me lol, the song was to good :D
Lyrics:
Yeah!
Let’s talk about love
Now you can tell the world you never was my girl
You can burn my clothes when I’m gone
Or you can tell your friends just what a fool I’ve been
And laugh and joke about me on the phone
You can tell the arm go back to the farm
You can tell my feet to hit the floor
Or you can tell my lips to tell my fingertips
They won’t be reaching out for you no more
But don’t tell my heart my achy breakin heart
I just don’t think he’d understand
Cause if you tell my heart my achy breakin heart
He might blow up and kill this man
Aw yeah!
Okay here we go
Now you can tell my ma I moved to Arkansas
Now you can tell your dog to bite my leg
Or tell you brother cliff, his fist can tell my lip
He never really liked me anyway
Or tell your aunt Louise tell anything you please
My self already knows I’m not okay
Or you can tell my eyes to watch out for my mind
I might be walking out on him today
But don’t tell my heart my achy breakin heart
I just don’t think he’d understand
And if you tell my heart my achy breaking heart
He might blow up and kill this man
Hey, don’t tell my heart my achy breaking heart
I just don’t think he’d understand
Cause if you tell my heart my achy breakin heart
He might blow up and kill this man
Oh!
OK?
The slight change in the lyric from "Achy', Breakin' heart" here to "Achy Breaky Heart" in the Billy Ray Cyrus version is possibly all it needed to become a smash -- it often takes just a little quirk like that to capture the listener's attention. Other than that, I can barely distinguish this version from the BRC hit except that this one is more interesting and raw musically. Still, if I was the songwriter Don Von Tress, I wouldn't be complaining either way. Like it or loathe it, he's written himself a classic!
+New Falconer Records Yes, it's amazing what a little polish or slight difference in method can do... Just look at Slade's "Come & Feel the Noise" versus the cover done by Quiet Riot under the protest of lead singer Kevin Dubrow. He HATED the song... Thought it was crap. So, he intentionally sang it in a "Scream-'til-your-voice-is-strained-out!" style... and that, along with the band's accompaniment, gave it enough of an edge--missing from the original cover--to make it a hit.
So true pancudowny, and that's a good example with the Slade/Quiet Riot thing. If you're interested, I've done a few little You Tube things on originals and covers. If you click onto my channel New Falconer Records you'll see a series called "10 Classic Recordings that are Actually Cover Versions: Uncovered". There's a country music one that includes 'Achy Breaky Heart'. Cheers.
New Falconer Records
I go further... Anyone ever heard of Jennifer Rush? She did the original cover of "The Power of Love" back in '85(?), and Laura Branigan covered it also. Ms. Rush's was more operatic & gentle... and Laura really put her heart-&-soul into it, making it her own! Yet the only version that most know of is Celine Dion's highly-polished cover, with it's reworked accompaniment.
Jennifer Rush's original version of 'The Power Of Love' was a #1 hit here in Australia (as was Celine Dion's too, unfortunately). I'm with you though pancudowny, I think both the earlier versions are superior to Celine's one.
New Falconer Records
Yeah I think the guitar solos are definitely better in this original version
I prefer the harmonies in this version, like there's one voice that goes really low during "you can tell your dog to bite my leg" and some other lines
Ahora van a decir que la de payaso de rodeo no es de caballo dorado.
Creo que esa sí es de ellos, pero la de “No Rompas Más” no es de ellos.
This is absolutely awful.

Ich liebe Southpark! Hallo aus Australien!
If they could have done as well with it as Billy Ray did, someone might know who they are today. Never heard of them til 5 minutes ago.
After they recorded their albums in Nashville, they went their separate ways. Kevin still sings, as does Kendal, who tours with Brad Paisley.
They were sooo much more talented than Billy Ray
That's what happens when you sell your soul to the music industry. They still your song and let a dude with a mullet get famous off of it!!!!!
It's the EXACT same song! I did not know that Billy Ray was a rip until 15 minutes ago!
They didn't write it, only recorded it, thus not "their" song.
I grew up on them, actually. They came from Oroville, which is about an hour and a half from here. I have an autographed photo with them hanging on my wall! haha I'm also friends on FB with the lead singer, Kevin. Kendal Marcy has been touring with Brad Paisley for well over 10 years, and Kris has been running his own artist management company. I still think of their songs. :) They had some great ones.
I remember meeting them through a promotor that booked concerts and fundraisers. I wonder what ever happened to him.

For me this original version is far more superior than Billy's, Elvis's, or than any 2nd versions this song has.
Feels more organic and addictive.
You do know Elvis died before the song was released? ⚰️ Rest in peace 😭 so he couldn't have recorded a cover. :)
What you heard was an Elvis impersonator, which is a person who pretends to be (but isn't actually) Elvis. As with everything, there are professionals (people who are paid for it) and amateurs. They have conventions in Las Vegas. :)

Personally I like both versions but if i have to pick one i would have go with billy ray cyrus because he made it into a cult following Marcy Brothers may have done it first but nearly everyone knows it for better or for worse because of Billy Ray Cyrus he made the song popular in my opinion this is one of those rare examples that the cover is better than the original.
@@MattHisagi Same with George Strait's version of Amarillo By Morning. The songwriter sang it; then Chris LeDoux did a cover; then George Strait did a cover & his took off.

Sorry but I see why Billy Ray’s version took off and this one didn’t... lol 😂
Would Don't Tell My Heart fit into Country Rock ?
I prefer this version lol. Sometimes a song isn't a hit first go round sadly. People just have to accept that.
Exactly, I agree !00%. "Killing me softly" is an other example. most people like the Fugee version better, or "Cum on feel the noise" Most people like the Quiet Riot version better than the orig. by Slade. And so on..........
***** Well Killing ME Softly wasn't originally by Roberta Flack if that is what you were thinking. Also the original version You're No Good kinda got lost in the shuffle because Linda Rondstadt's version was so huge same for Reba version of Fancy (Bibbie Gentry wrote and recorded it first).
I didn't know that. But the orig. version that surprised me the most and made me laugh my a** off, is "Whisky in the jar". The orig. is by an Irish folk band named Dubliners, I believe.
+jammyjammer2015 And then there are covers that each time they're done, the original song then transcends an era. Just look at "The Loco-Motion":
'60s: (Originally) Little Eva
'70s: Grand Funk Railroad
'80s: Kylie Monogue
'90s: ???
2000s: Atomic Kitten

Stolen by billy ray cyrus
Hardly. Billy Ray Cyrus produced a far more popular (and infamous) version of the song. He didn't "steal" anything. It happens that sometimes other versions are much more popular. For example, nobody remembers Mark Chesnutt's version of "Friends in Low Places".
It's not stolen, he did a cover.
