I started this maybe a month and a half ago and I’ve been pushing myself to finish it- Its a little messy and in some places inconsistent, but I hope you enjoy! If you’d prefer to avoid the bulk of the song content warnings, skip to 3:35. The song will still mention mild cursing, violence, murder, and drowning, but the active depiction of the abuse will be condensed.

Hello! A lot of people have been loving the dog, and I appreciate it! However I’ll answer the question on what happened to the dog after being released.
Despite how it probably seems, the husband didn’t kill the dog, but more so he didn’t make an effort to look for them. I didn’t think too beyond how the dog passed away, but I’d say the closest answer is that Mother Nature took its course. It could have been starvation, a failure to cross the river, or something.
Although he was angered by them both escaping, he wasn’t willing to attack his dog. Luanne on the other hand was different, which would also explain why he stopped hitting her when the dog intervened.
But that’s just my own take on it, anyone can interpret it however the please! But this is mainly for those wondering about it!

I always felt there was an innate human fear that was associated with a dog growling at a person, so that's why I thought he stopped when the lab defended Luanne. In addition, it's said that some pets are so loyal to their owners that if their owner dies, then in this case the dog, heartbroken, also "dies" of a broken heart. Luanne was obviously loyal to Labby because she stayed behind with him, like Labby was the one thing tying her there. In addition, lab retrievers are bred to BE loyal, which is why there is no fear in them if they are protecting their owners.
It could just simply be that Labby was so loyal to Luanne that he followed her into death.

This animatic is just plot twist after plot twist
She had a brief moment of hope- and the symbolism of it being in color is so clever and heartbreaking.
The music too is very uplifting at this part.
I like to believe that Luanne didn't drown, but her husband beat her so much when he found her after escaping that he killed her. He didn't want to tell people that he killed her so he threw her back into the water and told everyone who asked what happened to her that she drowned herself.
Yeah, that's what I think too. He killed her, threw her in the water, and waited like a day or two before declaring her "missing". Then idk, the body washed up or they dragged the bog or whatever, but yeah.
Personally I feel like there would have been more implications for that to have been what happened, also it would make sense that she would rather drown herself since based on how the Bastard acts he would have probably beat and abused her terribly to the point of near death or death so she took her own life instead.

A little detail in this song I love -
The implication is that her own bastard isn't the only man Luanne takes down. The final verse references multiple people - "So the bastards will never sleep again" and "She drags their souls down to hell" - with that leading to the idea of Luanne avenging not only herself, but other abuse victims. She's chained to the plane of life itself, and God (loving her) is letting her be the vessel of freedom for others. Hence, a lasting Caution to men to not act like that, lest Luanne appear at their side next.

Im throwing my DnD party into a mission where they investigate the disappearance of multiple people, 3 men and 1 woman. Obviously based on this story, the final "boss" is Luanne and they can choose to not kill her because her "victims" are all men who abuse their wives.

In the other animatics I've seen Luanne is a lot more emotional and sadistic at times. In this version the dog plays a role and a great role at that. Luanne is seen to be a little more headstrong and stronger willed than in other versions. She screams at her husband while she enacts her revenge and is not happy in the end but she doesn't feel guilty either. It's hard to feel empathy for those who have harmed you and she demonstrates her hatred for him pretty well. Amazing all around and love the idea of using the dog
Thank you! Thats the general idea. I myself am a very empathetic person, but even I know that in some cases you can’t just accept the things that happened. At least not completely. There is always needs to be a point where you need to do something about it, or nothing else will change. I’m glad that point got across to you!

I adore the fact that the dog continuously helped Luanne, be it protecting her, serving as a decoy or helping her get revenge afterwards, I love that you included the dog more than in just one frame
okay, so I realized it's kind of weird to only write about the dog like it's the only good thing about this animatic. I love the drowning frames, there's honestly something so horrifying about her hair flowing back to the surface. I love the style of the animation, I love the design of Luanne. I love the frame 'the shine around her eyes', how her face is cracked in the middle, it shows us just how much the bastard broke her. I love her dreaming sequence. Words cannot express the many thing that I find amazing about this animatic, you did such a great job.
I like to think she didn't kill him but made his life a living hell (drag their souls down to hell) to the point of wanting to die. She got reprieve but he doesn't deserve that kind of peace. Some ppl think dying is the ultimate punishment but I think there's a lot in life that could make someone wish they were dead. (fate worse than death)

I think that’s the symbolism of the chains that bind her spirit. He kept her bound to him in life, and she returns the favor by never giving him a moments reprieve as a spirit.

I really appreciate that even though this is stylized she actually looks like an adult. I feel like so many of these animatics infantilize Luanne even though she's clearly a grown ass woman.
I feel a lot of the people who make these animatics are younger (teenagers-college age), and have more experience drawing younger faces/bodies. That being said, the depiction here is definitely a welcome change.
I don't think that's what they're trying to do? people have different art styles and for some it's hard to draw older looking people, and since they made the animatic for fun to begin with why should they care?
Theres something so powerful about the man saying how no one ever loved her, and as a spirit her actions make it seem like shes going to hell with him, but with that final line "God loves Luanne, praise be Amen" its just...wow. This song is great and the animatic makes it even better
Yes, it was hard for me to hear in the culmination but that line is a crucial rebuke of her husband’s bravado. Glad you caught it too, it’s a real interesting note to strike in the middle of that probably-revenge (?) section. Adds a bit of sympathy and warmth to the usual vengeful spirit thing.
When she was running in the forest and the singer was mentioning about how she dreamed of living on the coast, the thought immediately hit me and I was like "What if she's dead?" and then when it got to the part where she drowned I just sat there for a moment. I felt like crying, but I didn't.

I showed this song to my mom just because I thought she'd like the musical. She started crying and I wondered why. She was Luanne. I never knew my biological dad just my adoptive father. Well my bio dad was the bastard. This was my mom's life and it freaks me out hearing this song. I can't decide if I hate or love the fact the girl in this particular animatic looks just like a younger version of my mom. She's one of the strongest people I know and I feel horrible that I was product of their relationship

Your mom is awesome, it's not easy to leave such relationships and it's hard to go past the thoughts of "was it my fault? was it me?", it can easily spiral into some deep self-hatred, but she went past that, and that's something worthy of praise. Now, Jacky, I understand the guilt one can feel for something that was not done by oneself, but please remember you're not responsible for the relationship they had, it was not your fault, it was not because of you, please, don't feel guilty for it, you're not the product of a horrible relationship, you're the proof, the proof of your mother's bravery.

A Few Things
1. That is a good boy
2. Like a lot of other people I like the dream sequence she has and the reveal of the eyes
3. The way you draw the dress is really good, especially with the complicated shape. Same with fingers and hands.

I like the emphasis on her screaming, a lot of Leave Luanne animatics put a lot of emphasis on her dragging her husband down to hell but none I've seen so far mention this as part of the ghost story Luanne is. Luanne reminds me of La Llorona as the fact of dragging to hell or killing you isn't what distinguishes La Llorona from any spooky folktale, her being a weeping woman is. For La Llorona the importance of her cries is in her name, for Luanne it's the crescendo that plays each time her breath and screaming is mentioned.

My town actually has a legend REALLY Similar to ‘leave Luanne”, except the legend is called “Sarah Warren” (Warren is a common name, so it’s hard to pin which Warren clan Sarah was from)
Sarah married a Warren man, the story says either Josiah or Abe (different people use different names, I personally believe it was the third option of Daniel), but regardless of version the story makes sure you know that the Warren man was a BAD GUY. Gambled, drank, beat Sarah, raped her, and beat their children as well. Basically the worst dude u could ever be married to.
Well… Sarah snapped. She poisoned the man, killed the children and then ran into the corn fields around their house once she regained her mind and realized she had killed her children (not too hung up about her husband, but she loved the kids so she was a bit sad about that). The man’s brother or cousin (story differs, name is never said) then curses Sarah’s grave and doesn’t give her a Christian burial for her actions.
Then Sarah’s ghost haunts her old home and drags any abusive husband to Hell to suffer alongside her husband.
The story never really says how she died, but it implies pretty heavily that the brother or cousin killed her
Luanne had a heart bigger than this world deserved. She could have ran with the dog without letting him know, or she could have taken the knife and ended the bastard. But she didn’t want to kill him and she didn’t want to separate him from his dog. In the end she dies by caring to much

I took it as both his actual dog escaped and that she was the dog (referring to the cuss word) and she was finally free from his abuse, weather that be from escaping and starting a new life or drowning.😢😭

I love how early on you introduced the dog and how you kept him around the whole time. I’ve never seen that done before.
My middle school had a substitute teacher, mrs tweedy who, if we were well behaved and did our work, would tell us a scary story. They were almost all traditional folktales that I’d read before but they way she’d tell them was so creepy and immersive, it felt like I was always hearing them door the first time.
My point is that this feels just like one of her stories.

My old dog was one time scolded by my mother, I took her defence because she is an old dog so shouting doesn't mean anything it only makes her more sad.

I love how throughout the animatic when hair starts to slowly fall down and personally I think that represents how she is finally like I need to leave and how the abuse finally just cracks her and how she has to leave. I also thinks it represents kind of a freedom, like when her hair was in the bun it was when his controlling was at its best but in the low pony she was starting to think about leaving more, then when her hair was down she finally left. I just love that representation❤️
Anyone else notice the the double entendre of the line "who beat you there"? Also I find it interesting the husband thinks she was sent from hell to be tortured by him in death and then just gets completely wrecked because it's very clear that Luanne was a devout Christian and innocent. "Like seriously man? You think that's where she went? Oh no you have a front row seat to torture town, idiot! Karma!" Was along my train thought.

CAN WE APPRECIATE THIS MASTERPICE??? I'm excited because i can't find a lot edits for leave Luanne. I usually find more for tbosb (the ballad of Sara Berry) which also is a spectacular song but i really wanted to see Luanne's story from other prespective and this is spectacular. I never imagined that the dog can play a so important role ( the dog is arleady important bc he is the reason Luanne escaped.) But the part where Luanne saw how her life will be if the bastard wouldn't catch her make me really emotional because she deserved better! Honestly while making this I was lip-syncing so I’m glad to know I’m not the only one! 35MM does some amazing stuff, and though not as common as Sara Berry, this song has a powerful message or at least a powerful story. Happy you enjoyed it, and I hope you have a lovely day as well !

i have a small head cannon about this animatic. its that the man she dances with when shes free(the only person we see besides the husband and her and the dog) is her husband before he showed his true colors, which would explain why he didnt have eyes. because his true colors werent shown yet and we only see his eyes after she escapes and he catches her.

Does anybody else think it's bullshit that Luanne "drowned herself"?
I've heard that it's pretty hard to drown yourself, so what I think happened was her husband was so pissed with Luanne that he was like "If you love that bog so much, why don't you stay there?!" as he drowns her himself.
As much as the other animations are amazing, this one really takes top place. I love how you really brought the dog along, and how you portrayed her emotions so well! Oh my goodness this made me cry but it’s so lovely. Amazing job!

Watching this...it got me thinking and feeling that the "bastard husband" killed her and used her suicide to cover up his crimes...and Luanne "settled her score" and was spared as "God loves Luanne." Either way, this hits me as what my life could've been if I didn't leave my ex fiancé
I think it was her final act of defiance. If I’m gonna die it won’t be because you got the satisfaction of killing me. A final FUCK YOU. But also, she truly felt she had no way to escape. How it says in verse 2 that even if she ran, he’d be in his truck hunting her back down. And then in 3 it seems like she saw herself swimming away just to reach the other side of the bank and he’s there waiting for her. Like she feels no escape would’ve worked. Idk, just a different perspective. I see yours too though.

I must admit, this has to be one of the best Animatics I've seen done on this song yet! The facial expressions are incredibly well done! not to mention the fact that I had a much easier time understanding the story-telling aspect of the song though the choice of action and the better incision of the dog, lovely work!

I really love some of the shots you pulled off here, particularly in that perspective flip when Luanne's spirit reappears! I'd also assumed that the dog coming back symbolized the passage of time, as in she kept him chained there "a dog's age", just as she had been trapped in that house with her abuser for far too long.

I love how when she finally leaves the strand that's always in her face no longer is. It's even in color as apposed to the black and white she ajusted to when living with her husband. It's nice way to show that she becomes happier and even more confident in herself.

I saw this months ago, and it stuck in my head. I think about a month ago I tried to find it again. I searched everything I could think of relating to the video. I'm so thankful I found it again. It's beautiful and left a huge impact.

Oh the irony that in the end the abuser became the abused realizing how he made Luanne feel after all those years but, realizing too late and forced to repent unable to leave and stuck with Luanne forced to see the woman he treated so poorly staring at him him with menacing white eyes. Good job by the way love the animation ^^ and how it flickers over his face to show him now being in Luanne position.

I must say I never given much thought to the dog, and kinda assumed it was always on the husband's side. So the addition of him as an ally to Luanne in life and death really struck a cord with me. I figured the husband didn't kill him (probably cared for him more than he did for Luanne), but thank you for clarifying. When I envisioned the song, I always pictured the swimming part in the moment (just saw her swimming, maybe taking in the nature around her), but I like your take of her daydreaming of dancing and meeting a new (better) man and just being happy and joyful.
