  • I last saw The Stranglers in 1979. I had given serious thought to seeing them in 2018 and 2020 but worried that they had changed too much from the band I remembered. Sadly, after each tour it seemed more and more likely I wouldn’t get another chance to see them. So this year, it was time to dismiss my uncertainty. After all, when all’s said and done nothing is the same as it was 44 years ago.
Not surprisingly, my choice of songs all, with the exception of one, come from their earliest days.
    Sometimes (00:07)
    This Song (05:03)
    Golden Brown (08:36)
    Walk On By (13:23)
    Something Better Change (19:08)
    Hanging Around (22:35)
    No More Heroes (27:07)
I had hoped to record some recent material but the two I wanted, ‘The Lines’ and ‘And If You Should See Dave …’, didn’t make the Sydney gig. They would have been lovely contrasts to those early numbers.
It was a terrific performance to a packed audience who ranged in age from their 20s to their 70s. Some things have changed but really great songs never get old.

Seeing The Stranglers recently in Melbourne was a first. I was apprehensive, with the recent passing of pivotal band members. But I was not disappointed! I know what you're saying. I face these feelings every time I'm trying to decide whether or not to see a band I loved back in the 70s and 80s. All bands evolve, sometimes almost out of recognition. What I really enjoyed about this performance was the new songs. "White Stallion" was the best song of the night (and the person I was with thought so too). So I'm not now prepared to write them off as just a 'tribute band'. They're still recording great songs. Sadly, there are other bands who don't record new material and who exist only to play their old stuff. It's these bands I see as a tribute of themselves. Doesn't mean I wouldn't go to see them though.

I've been a fan since 1980, but amazingly have never seen them live. I think I was put off seeing them after Hugh Cornwell left in 1990, but now I wish I'd gone before Dave Greenfield passed away in 2020. I've always loved the combination of Dave's amazing keyboards and JJ's bass. I see they are playing at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 26 March, but according to Ticketmaster they have SOLD OUT. What an achievement to sell out a venue like that after all these years.

Regretfully, I didn't see them on the tour before this one when Dave was still with them. I hadn't seen them since their very first tour of Australia. This video gets lots of comments about them being little more than a tribute band these days. That is far from the truth. They are still recording new music which at this performance stood up very well against their earliest material. If you get a chance, you should see them. Better late than never, as they say.

@@Peter_LiveMusic Well I saw Peter Hook & The Light in both 2022 and 2023 playing Joy Division songs (and some New Order), with Hooky singing as well as playing some bass and his son Jack also playing bass. They don't write any new stuff, but I was there to listen to Joy Division's music, and they are like The Stranglers now in that only the bass player remains from the original band. I've loved Joy Division since 1980 too, but as the band obviously ceased to exist in May of that year with the loss of Ian Curtis, I never got to see them live, and New Order almost never played a Joy Division song.
Edit: Thanks for the video BTW. Well filmed and about the only post-Dave live performance I could find.

I've been thinking a bit lately about the thin line between a band and a tribute band. There are of course some very obvious differences, but in the middle there is a blur. I'm seeing From the Jam very soon (another bass player keeping songs alive). I'm looking forward to it, not least because I never got to see the original band alive, but mostly because they do sound like the 'real' thing. I do get tired of all the condescending comments saying such and such a band aren't the 'real' band since so and so left. These people seem stuck in the past. I wonder what new music they ever listen to. Time stands still for no one.

I love The Stranglers and am, luckily, old enough to have lived through the 70's as a teen thus witnessing the release of so much stunning music. Today unfortunately, all but one of the players that generated this band's fantastic music that defined them (the 'classic' albums) have since passed. Their legacy will live on permanently, of course. However (and personally), I feel they are now essentially a covers band. Fantastic that JJB is still delivering the goods, but still. Nevertheless, keep on rockin' guys !!

I know what you are say, and basically I agree with you, but I don't think this line up of The Stranglers can be so easily dismissed. The fact that they are still producing new music and playing it live says a lot. I do wish I had recorded some more of their most recent material (not just "This Song"). "White Stallion" (IMO) was the best song of the night and that is from their most recent album.
As to being a cover band, there are many, many bands now continuing to trade under their original name but with only one or two of the original members. While they most definitely aren't the same band, I'm not sure they can be dismissed as cover bands. Everything changes. It's up to individual fans to decide whether or not they move with the band or simply stop listening. There's no wrong or right. Yes, keep rockin'.

These "Tribute Band" comments are out of line, i saw the last tour with Hugh, brass band and all and it was poor, as was the 10 album. This last tour and latest album blow it out the water

I'd say what do you except when the original was well over 40 years ago. Be thankful they are still performing in any form.

Everyone entitled to their opinions but there are thousands who'd disagree with you, including all those who attended this gig. No is making you listen to them.

Savvy marketing. It brought you here. As well as all those in the crowd.
