I grew up in Baltimore, and know it starts on the local level. To really turn that city around, you need a drug treatment center in every neighborhood paid for by drug war dollars. You need trade job skills training in every neighborhood and show people there's more than one way to make a good living then selling drugs. If someone gets sentenced to prison for a drug use/possession charge, the first 30 days of their incarceration needs to be done in a treatment program. And last but certainly not least, we need to reinforce the notion of fatherhood in this city. If a young man gets a girl pregnant, there needs to be a place he can go for advice and mentorship. We need to show these young men how to be fathers, even if that means not being a husband. We need parents for these kids because kids raising kids leads to chaos and it's what they have now. I once heard 2 young girls about 15-16 on a city bus in Baltimore talking about their plans for the future. I was on my way home from work and these girls got on at a stop in front of a community center and sat in front of me. The one girl said to her friend that she just had a talk with her mother and HER MOTHER told her she should get pregnant soon so that she can get her "own check" and her "own place", The other girl said that she was going to start having her babies soon too but was going to live with her momma because she had a section 8 house and it would help her mom get more money so they could get a car. I thought I was in the twilight zone and wanted so bad to tap them on the shoulders and tell them there was a better way. But I know how well that would have gone over. It occurred to me then and there that this level of poverty is a family cycle and is passed down like some kind of bad genetic disorder. This mindset is what needs to be addressed in Baltimore.

Yes I had a similar experience not as bad though I asked a young lady that had just graduated high school what she wanted to do after and she wanted to be a nurse. Nursing is a good job but I don’t think she thought she had another choice

You hit the nail on the head. I also think there should be more programs and opportunities for people fresh out of jail. Having a felony paradoxically makes it harder for someone to turn their life around, and they go right back to what they were doing before.

I'm from Baltimore, I live on the westside.North avenue looks like a 3rd world country.Imagine growing up in this bleak environment. There was an 8yr old boy killed by an abandoned house that collapsed on him while he was walking home from school.Imagine waking up every morning to the drug dealers right at the end of your steps and the addicts in line waiting to get their fix.imagine the children who witness SEVERAL murders by the time they're 13.Looking at that type of violence and despair from the day your born every day, changes a person and rips any sense of hope of a future from you. There are soooo many aspects of what needs to be fixed its overwhelming.I think a lot of people have become so beaten down by it all that they've thrown their hands up and given up.its sad,so many didnt start out with this apathetic outlook on life, and want to do better but do not know where to start.

I grew up in the housing projects too. But you know what, I'm not now. My parents were drug addict "crackheads". I personally made a decision when I was a child not to let that be my life. I finished high school and got a trade in Manufacturing. We can't keep blaming the "white man" for mistakes that you do yourself. The real reason why people stay in the projects is because you have been mentally programmed to think that nothing can be better than this. The government started it, but we didn't have to continue it. I'm a married father of 2 kids and I always wanted better for myself. It's not how you was raised, but it's how you choose to live. Simply 👌

This. My best friend from middle school through high school moved to my town from Baltimore. His father worked hard and got a really good job at a huge company so they moved. Had a nice house in a middle class, mostly white, area. He would tell me (back in the 80s) that they had to stop talking to most of their old friends because they were called sellouts (followed quickly by...can you give me some money?) His father would say that he used to worry about bullets coming through the walls, after the move, his biggest worry was keeping weeds out of his garden. Point being, his father worked hard and decided he wanted better.
Its not the government getting these 14 year olds pregnant. Or fathering 6 kids by 21 years old and not knowing any of them. Its not the government forcing kids to drop out of school. Stop expecting some "entity" to take care of your problems. Government is just a collection of people, not gods. They dont know any more than anyone else and are more concerned with keeping themselves and their party in power.

There's a reason why Homicide, The Wire, etc. were filmed in Baltimore. The set/scene was already there. You didn't need a studio in Hollywood to create it. It already existed and was 100% real.

Grew up in East Baltimore. I hear the saying so many times that “I sell drugs to support my family” yet I rarely saw one drug dealer selling drugs to legitimately support their family. Sure, they might throw a couple dollars here and there to family members but it was mainly for clothes, cars, females, and overall clout. We’re dealing young people who don’t look up to doctors, lawyers, or people who went to school to earn a good living. They look up to the drug dealers who have a lot of money and get it quick rather then spending years in school.

Vivian Lee parts of Philadelphia are absolutely beautiful but that’s only one side of it; crime is rampant, people litter, the schools are often bad and for me personally the amount of homeless cats is staggering and very sad. You can get cats spayed and neutered for free but many people are too lazy to do it!
There are many blighted properties, homeless people, the roads are often barely drivable
Sure the architecture, parks, museums and restaurants are amazing but it takes more to make a city truly great.

I lived in Baltimore for a while in 1969. It was a great city. Most of the crime was confined to an area called "The Block". There has been a constant decline in Baltimore and many other cities in America. This is primarily a cultural problem with no easy solutions. All of our cities are filled with nonfunctioning people. Addicts, mentally ill etc. People are going to have to take responsibility.

I have been to Baltimore a lot. I like it, I feel like the city is very nice and welcoming and has heart. Yet it is hurting bad. I hope one day it can become the amazing city it once was. But when you have conspiracy theories spouted by a guy drinking on the corner about the government just wanting to imprison youth there in is where a lot of the issues lay.
And sorry but another documentary by the left blaming the right is now just cliche, and fails. Because is not the city Democratic?
Plain and simple: Stop selling and doing drugs, focus on working and education, build up credit, stop impregnating everything and then raising kids in single parent shitholes, and make the city safe and attractive to investors and make the main government's focus on rooting out corruption.

Amen, Darnell. And some people talk about identifying root causes but they rarely go back all the way to Children having Children. It's obvious when you think about it, and our government supports this practice by giving benefits and making it at least comfortable for kids to have kids. Everything the child gets in life will be paid for by taxpayers. The parents are biological parents and that's it...they have no resources to offer their children.

My beloved city😢 it hurts so bad because I remember the good ol days. Before the drugs and the abandonment. Before the murder and the families destroyed by the streets. So many people have lost their lives and their minds. They’ve lost their dignity and their self respect. Drugs destroyed generations. So much death and sadness. You can’t get used to the pain. Young people who were full of life, parents and loved ones who had forever all gone. There’s no winner. Today you’re a killer and tomorrow you’re killed. That mayor was the kid of the mayor my grandmother voted for. The sitting mayor was fired and she was the interim mayor. On her watch the streets literally ran red. The city rioted. People are angry and upset because there’s no justice with BCPD. My 75 year old aunt was missing 6 months and they just recovered her remains up the street from where she went missing. They didn’t even talk to the neighbors for two weeks. No cameras pulled nothing. Just a phone call that she’s gone and we’re lucky we got that. Change the legislation and we change the city. I know that our parents and grandparents voted Democrat and we’re just go along but this time we can’t. The presidential election is just the beginning, we have to change the legislation, the people that decide what our babies eat in school, what they learn. How we’re treated and most importantly how our tax dollars are spent. There’s no accountability to us. Homeowners who literally rent our homes because of the crime and the schools. I was educated in the Baltimore public school system and I received a great education, the senior class at Patterson high school read on a kindergarten level. They can’t read. BLM my foot. How? When kids are dying in the streets? How? When you can’t even go out certain places because you know what it is. The mayor is young and he doesn’t know what to do. The city has fallen apart and needs a new scapegoat. When will accountability come? When will we begin to see the changes promised at each election? I’m not voting for anything if they don’t do what’s right for the people of the city. Shoutout to Donnie ❤

This is by design Trump will allow his rich buddies to go in and buy those houses or lots for very little money. When the area becomes regentrified they will charge high prices for rent forcing all of the black people out. This is happening in Brooklyn and other cities that are being regentrified. Ben Carson said that he is welcoming investors to buy homes and bring businesses to Baltimore. If and when this happens black folks in Baltimore will be displaced.

Most cities the drugs and crime are in the one part of the city thats bad, like west philly for example...but Baltimore..doesnt matter if you're over east, west, northwest, southwest, southeast...etc...heroin and coke is being sold out in the open...Baltimore is nothing like any other city or place in America, its truly in a league of its own. Great video. There are some facts that need to be checked, though. The drug problem and murder rates doubled well before the war on drugs. Children born to unwed mothers and fatherless families began well before the war on drugs. The insinuation that the war on drugs was the problem is not correct (though it did exacerbated the problem).
I agree with solving the problem up front. But “helping mothers” isn’t the solution. Keeping fathers in the household is what needs to happen.

It's going to take MEN to change our inner cities. MEN who have the street creds and experience to teach kids a better way. So what if these MEN have served time and have violent pasts. At least younger generations can associate with these MEN and vice versa. These MEN understand the streets and the youth will understand them. In particular the black MALE has the power to turn these places around but they themselves must be impowered.
I emphasize MEN/MALE because obviously the mothers cannot do it alone. That's also a failed policy. A strong father figure is essential in the rearing of better youth.
Give these former young criminals and gang members that have proven themselves to be true MEN, more authority and resources to reach the youth. If a kid sees a few MEN stand up for good and fight for their community and future it creates a winning attitude. One child turned from the life of crime, can change the lives of ten, can change the lives of hundreds, can change the lives of.........
Employ these MEN. The streets are 24/7. They won't do it from an office. There need to be "gangs" for good where youth can be mentored by MEN.

Because the white people from suburbia are coming down with their money and is money and buying it..... And even when those kids make that money they don't have any idea what to do with it..... And of course competing drug cruise start and What you have in Baltimore is a 3rd world country..... It's not because of welfare or anything like that.... Is it strictly poverty misery is misery people lying in roaching rat infested houses.... Civic boosters, PR firms, promoters and spin doctors try mightly to brightside anyone that will listen, by repeating like a mantra, that Pittsburgh is a "success story", of an American city, that's "risen from the ashes", after the collapse of the steel industry in the mid 1980s. Well, I live in downtown Pittsburgh, and I can tell you beyond doubt, that Pittsburgh is certainly NOT a success story by ANY measure. No more than Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore or many other rustbelt ghost towns are. America has been in decline since the 1970s and now it mostly lies in ruins, gutted by the military industrial complex. It's NOT going to improve folks. Get ready for complete economic collapse and all of the horrific social upheaval that will follow as a consequence. Buy firearms. And, you'll notice, if you happen to have tried to purchase a firearm or ammunition lately, that supplies are low, and many retailers are sold out. Looks like a lot of Americans can see what's coming eh? Good luck!

@Mário Gama REALLY.... Then what do you call the "WAR ON DRUGS "? U must don't understand what is really going on! Police agencies nation wide get federal funding to keep the war on drugs going, like the money that you just spoke about! One of those being the burne grant foundation! To buy weapons state ,of the art technology and other equipment to go after mostly black dealers! The tip of the spear for the war on drugs is aimed at urban environments, not the overwhelming amount of meth labs In all the rural towns across America! Why not? Actually Meth is more dangerous and addictive than crack cocaine! It's not because Black's are and have always been the target!... Also they give local and state police agencies incentives along with the funding... All of the proceeds from the war on drugs those agencies get to seize and keep to line their own pockets... All of the money taken from dealers which amounts to billions nationwide, nice cars, homes ect.! So for that reason targeting blacks and continuing the war on drugs will always be and will never end!

@@dempsey2023 Welp, yes and no. A big yes for the education part. Which in turn should help the poverty/unemployment aswell. But even the concept of the "school to prison pipeline" is problematic imo. Because it almost always includes a purposeful dismissal of all personal responsibility and agency. Its quite literally telling children to "give up". That they have no choice but prison or death. Which obviously doesn't have to happen at all. What Baltimore and most places with this same problems needs is the education and a majority culture shift to go along with it to value the education. Contrary to what most would assume a lot of these areas already get more educational funding than less dangerous counterparts. The money is there. It could be done. Its just usually allocated to stop everyone from hurting eachother with metal detectors and security and all that. We need something major to happen to change a lot of people's whole mentality. To teach children to take advantage of the opportunities before them instead of retiring to the short life of drug dealing at 10 because the majority honestly believe the world will always be out to get them no matter what...
Sorry for the kind of long comment. But that idea is so harmful anymore.

Again everyone has a choice, you can't lay victim and complain. These people choose to stay where they are at and do the things they do. It's their fault no one else's.
