Why Lightning Storms Are Crucial For Your Fish, Shrimp & Aquariums Plants!

- Recently I was struck by lightning, it has changed my entire world. From my ability to walk, speak, sleep, and drive, to erasing some of my most cherished memories, cracking 21 teeth, 2 vertabrae and causing my right leg to be permanently numb and riddled with burns and tissue damage.
This life changing event has had me staring at my aquarium for hours. It brings me peace, yet somehow seemed to tie world events, exotic tropical fish, shrimp and plants to every other aspect of my life and the only known living ecosystem in the universe... Earth. Lakes, rivers, ponds and flood plains, all effected by the incredible and beautiful power of electricity - of lightning and thunder.
I moved the tank to my bedside for my recovery and have been thinking long ans hard about the positive things in life. Trying not to sulk around and say "Woe is me!", and just as i know this event will end up with possitive aspects, i tried to research and uncover the possitive attributes of lightning!
Does lightning kill fish? why doesnt lightning kill more fish in the sea? How does light work and what part does it play in the real life ecosystems that we source our pet fish and invertebrates from. Cherry shrimp, rainbow fish, panda garra, guppies, caridina shrimp, cichlids, discus, brine shrimp, trees, flowers and aquatic plants like cryptocornes, bucephalandra, java moss, java fern and thousands of other amazing organisms in our fishtank ecosystem.
It causes fish to breed, plants to grow with elements fused at temperatures hotter than the center of our sun!. It helps water to become oxygenated via the plants, via surface turbulance and via flash floods that signal it is time for fish to spawn, mate or lay eggs.
I hope you enjoy this episode. my heart is truly in it and I hope the energy that entered me, changed me, and may now enter you via knowledge or a sense of wonder, which shall serve to make the world an ever so slightly better place.

First, get well soon.. we need people like you in this world.
Second.. I was also hit by lightning.. while washing dishes! The lightning struck our local water tower and travelled through the water and threw me across the kitchen. I didnt get burns, but the thought issues went on for a few weeks... I suppose its like electric shock therapy.. it rearranges things for a while.
Third. I really hope you consider being in education. Your passion is contagious, and I think you could really inspire classes full of young people to the wonder of the natural world. I LOVED this video. The holistic view of our world, the chain of life, the mind boggling intricacies of evolution, not only of animals and fish, but symbiotic relationships throughout this tiny blue planet that we are currently ruining. You have a calling...to teach. Even if its only through this channel.. thank you for your research, and the passion with which you pass it on.
WOW. The passion, the intensity...it's truly a gift to us. Thank you so much for this video. I LOVE IT.
Of course I want in!!! Are you kidding me???? Some of my favorite things science, fish, and a true survivor... yours is one of my absolute favorite RUclips channels! Don’t ever stop giving us the real details!
Woot thanks . Entered
It was so cool to see your tanks in person! (This is Rose btw). And this video is fascinating. Love ya Alex!

A grateful perspective:
One of my friends (Billy) experienced a terrible stroke (cerebral embolism) causing horrible injuries and disfiguration. However, Billy found that the peculiar conditions affected through the stroke also brought a shift in his perception: Billy has developed kinesthia and has come to realize that he sees Auras and he "sees" through walls and percieves/communicates in ways that are quite recondite when compared to "ordinary" perception. Billy participated with researchers at the Department of Cognitive Science in our southern California medical university.
Although it has left him painfully disfigured and somewhat physically disabled, Billy's unusually expanded awareness and apparent hypersensitivity have allowed him to view his stroke as a "gift", and gratefully insists that he was "stroked" by good fortune in order to receive this "gift".
Seemingly tragic events can have unexpected outcomes;
"...they're not demons trying to take you away, they're really just angels trying to set you free".
I watched & want in. I found aquatic arts through your channel. I have been happy with every order... plants and fish! Thank you for all you do entertaining and always informative.
You are so very welcome. Thanks for tuning in and if you ever have a topic idea or question, I'd love to help get to the bottom of it, if I don't know the information off hand. Cheers, Carla, have a wonderful week!
A critical thinker lives a full life. Few and far in-between. Well done.
thanks for watching my friend!
The way everything is connected is such a deep and powerful aspect of life and the universe. To think enormous and devastating forces such as lightning and storms are intimate with life and the tiny fish swimming in the monsoon fed rice paddies and rivers. Wish you all the best with your recovery Alex. ps, love that aquarium!
totally. Thanks for watching and putting your holistic knowledge and views into the world.
Keep up the good work and keep thinking deep.
I would like to be entered in the sweepstakes. Great video. I learned so much about how lightning/storms impact the native habitat of some of the fish we keep as hobbyists
Entered!
I didn’t think I could learn that much in 26 minutes, great job.
Thanks buddy! Im really happy that it kept your interest....it took 3 hours to write the piece of paper i showed examples on (left handed too)
I want in. This is actually my third time watching this video. Its a subject that most people don't think about, and i think it took your unique perspective to bring the subject into the light
That tank is amazing. Haven’t even really started this video yet. +1 for the algorithm anyway.
🥰✌️
Awesome! Thank you!
Fantastic!! Truly a wonderful talk on the science and beauty of our natural world. I never thought about lightening and it's effects on fish. this was more thought provoking than most PBS nature films. You, Alexander are a real gem. thank you so much.
Cathy B Thank you kindly
Thanks for the chance. I want in. Good luck to all.
So in!
You’re amazing! Great Job!
THIS is why I subbed and Patreon. The History and Science given in an interactive narrative, coupled this time with your personal experience and journey. A true talent and artist in this arena, where no one else is doing the same. Keep true to your format and style. No on else comes close to your skill level. This might be your best content, definitely in the top three. A joy to hear and visualize as it's being told. Thanks Alex! Keep healing. .
Thank you so much Bob.... it took about a week of prep...but i hate editing...i think a straight forward lecture is more personal and challenging, and i spent 9 attempts and 3 hours on the paper (slowly writing with my left hand heh). So this video is how id like my videos to all be, but it was also extra important, extra special and i slept 10 hours prior, just to have the stamina (no script either)
But as always Bob, thank you so much for your support and advice or input. I value it immensely, and now that im on disability for a while, im hoping to make more videos in this realm.... perhaps a bit shorter
Thanks for everything. Hoping you are up to some live streams, on a regular basis, if that becomes doable. Take care of yourself. And...we want BEN. lol.
Wow, very educational and articulate. Good job. Get better soon man
Wow I’m glad you’re okay! What are the odds of getting struck by lightning?!?! ⚡️
Truly inspirational video you are extremely well educated! Can't wait to start playing with my new light in the morning see if can get my tank go into a feed frenzy. Keep up the amazing work! Positive healing vibes and wishes to you!
thank you, my friend...id love to hear if that works for you!
I discovered Aquatic Arts through your channel and wow they have some great variety! As pet adopters, we really appreciate their outlook on our furry little family members (3 cats all adopted together 2 years ago)! I just got into the fish keeping hobby around 18 months ago. What started as a “this will be a fun hobby”, quickly turned into MTS...4 tanks up and running ranging from 10 gallons to 75, and I just put together a rack to add 3 20 gallon longs! I’m hoping to turn these into Neo Shrimp tanks as I feel I’ve finally done enough research to try my hand at breeding them! Naturally I’d love a chance to enter your contest as I could experience Aquatic Arts and Shrimp at the same time! Thanks so much for the opportunity and all of your content! It is both informative and entertaining, a combination many content creators haven’t managed to mix together.
Thank you very much Sean! That sounds like an awesome set up, my friend! Definitely a great start. Remember, don't be affraid to search for or ask for- answers to questions. I started this channel to learn and share what knowledge I've already acquired also.
With shrimp, the best thing is patience. Don't fiddle with the water or any meds or chemicals, just get 10 to 20 (you really get better breeding results much faster, exponentially, as you get more shrimp to start a colony. They love old dingy tanks and often the hardest part is allowing them to have the dingy algae on stones, gravel or plants while having a tank look like a clear and clean pristine aquascape hehe.
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help advise you once you're setting up, and have fun! They're fascinating to watch
Your tank is stunning! I love it
Thanks for putting on the sweepstakes! I want in!

@@Fishtory thats super kind of you Alex, thank you so much.
I'm honestly here to support your channel not to take advantage of your generosity though.
Love your videos as you know. I'm fine with the others having a greater chance by not being included. I am already richly rewarded by enjoying your content and hope they continue for a long time to come.
Love to enter the giveaway. So nice of both of you to provide fish folks a chance to get wet pets for their aquariums.
Yay. Got you down. Were you the person during my last livestream who needed to discuss something about a gift from last time? In any case i promised you shipping, correct?
The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium Sorry it was not me. That aquarium though s so nice. What size was it?
First off, you have heart- a rare item in your age group. Don't let your passion die, especially do not let all the bumps in your road knock it out of you. Believe me many will try to do so. I'm talking from a much longer walk down a similar life path, I'm 64 this year, I've been dealing with Arthritis since age 4, Depression since age 12, Marital malfunctions since age 17, and spinal disc degeneration since 1993. It took me 18 months after my lower back surgery to be able to walk again without a cane, and to kick the Doctor ordered narcotics so that I could work again, until 2006 when my again needed lower back surgery and a cadaver bone implant put in to fuse my lower back into one bone. this also put me back onto the Doctor prescribed narcotic merry-go-round. The fusion failed totally, and my body attacked and dissolved completely the donor bone implant, not even leaving any scar tissue to show it had been there. I had the nerve stimulator implant placed to over-ride the pain impulses, it's battery life is supposed to be 12 years, the surgeon placed it to block pain coming from my hip area, but it should have been placed to block pain coming from my lower spinal vertibrae. As it was, it malfunctioned or died only 6 months after implanting. My pain Doctor wants me to talk to the Boston Scientific reps., but I've waited now over a month and the e-mail they were supposed to send me with appointment details has not come, neither have they contacted me by phone. All this crap has been worth the bumps, tho, i'm still getting off the narcotics, slowly, it gets easier every step down my Doctor and I take working together as a team. and I've lost 30+ pounds in that same time frame. I can see the end of the addiction happening in the next year. I have my first aquarium since I was 12 years old, and love my new pets in it. My 5 rescued cats think it's the greatest thing since canned tuna was invented, for them it is Kitty TV- Live Stream, they will take turns watching it by the hour. Yes, there is a cat proof lid fastened on top and double anchored down. My current spouse of 10+ years is my rock. We have weathered many gales together, wanted to kill each other many times, till we hammered all the rough parts smooth under our feet, knowing we will wake up tomorrow to hammer some more flat again. Communication is not as easy as murder, but it also leaves a lot less mess than trying to hide a bloody body in the suburbs !!! life's bumps don't get smaller or easier as one goes down this road called life, but as you fall over them, you get stronger, steadier, and more elastic getting over them, plus you gain more experience in seeing them ahead of you, so you can prepare for them. Lightning was a necessity to form the building blocks of life on this tiny blue-green ball floating in the immensity of the vast void of the universe. That which once created all the life we know to date, has gifted you with a whole new life to live, another millimeter of difference on where and how it hit and it would have been a darker story. Nuff said, the older we get the longer we ramble on ! BTW, I love your videos, especially the long ones !
thank you so much, and im so sorry about all your pain... i think a lot of us in the hobby know similar stories. hang in there yourself and as always, thanks for watching
This is an incredible video.
Thank you so kindly Marcie! I think it speaks to my very deepest feelings about life right now, as well as the mundane or everyday occurrences, which require huge systems and amazing odds. I hope you have an awesome week and feel free to share...this is my personal favorite post out of something like 150

I would like to be added for the give away. I’ve had my first experience with Aquatic Arts recently - it was great.
Right on! I hope the codes serve you well next time you need something (and remember every time you use SECRETHISTORY15 (first time only) or SECRETHISTORY10 youll get 10% off all your order...still get their sale or clearance items (as long as a code isnt required) and youll be entered for these give aways 100 entry points each order.... PLUS i randomly give away giftcards and free shipping all year to people like you...(because, 8% of profits are given back to customers, in store credit via the deal i made with their channel...and i get free shipping 4x a year plus a discount...but i made the deal so that hopefully it gives me enough new critters to show on the channel, but more importantly- it rewards viewers, whom watch the channel ...even if they can't afford to order something this financial quarterly period.
Enjoy! -Alex.

Been lovin your channel. Question about that tank. If you use that much rock and wood how much do you have to reduce stocking?
theres a video about that actually... and the main answer is Yes....i should reduce stocking.... the catch, is that i built the hill out of lava rock in media bags with cycled media and pvc tubes throughout, So the hill is lighter, annnd it actually has some water flow and gigantic surface area for beneficial bacteria
Clever. I'll have to remember that. Thanks. Used your code the other week and got some shrimp from flip aquatics so thanks for that as well.
liked, watched and shared, i like to be entered in your contest , great content thanxs Alex

Hey man I’ve been working on a project with ropefish for a while and I’ve narrowed it down to I think lightning is the spawning trigger because they live in the most active lightning area in the world. I would LOVE to discuss this at depth with you and get your thoughts. Shoot me a message or email if you wanna talk about it. Great video by the way.
sounds great. And I would guess anything out of the Venezuelan waterways, congo or cambodia would use it as a trigger. I'm not sure the best way to message you but theres a link the the fb group and thus my prefered private message method. I too would love to chat about this, and more. Thanks for watching!

Just a couple errors:
1. The air is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and the other 1% is just miscellaneous gases
2: Nitrite formula is NO2, Nitrate formula is NO3, NO is nitrous oxide
Great video other than the couple mistakes :)
thanks for pointing out the air composition fail. However your statements are not quite correct.(ill mention that secondly)
I too realized that as I said it, but said "over 60% nitrogen"...where as it also has just under 1% argon and 1% random gasses. So thats good info i should have had down specifically. (in Denver the air has a fair amount less oxygen than in L.A. as well, so rivers up in the Andes or Colombian mountains sometimes have less Oxygen also.
As for Nitrates and nitrogen, you are correct about NO3 NO2 however NO is nitric monoxide N2O is laughing gas/ nitrous oxide, add in potassium, hydrogen or sulfur and those are the nitric compounds I was spreaking of
other names and compounds i just found on Google's first few search pages
NF3nitrogen trifluoride NO nitrogen monoxide nitric oxide NO2 nitrogen dioxide N2O dinitrogen monoxide laughing gas N2O4 dinitrogen tetraoxide PCl5 phosphorous pentachloride SF6 sulfur hexafluoride S2F10 disulfur decafluoride H2O dihydrogen monoxidewater H2S dihydrogen monosulfide hydrogen sulfide NH3 nitrogen trihydride ammonia N2H4 dinitrogen tetrahydride hydrazine PH3 phosphorous trihydride phosphine
