    Since people are asking about this in the comments:
    The Franklin got her registry number when she was re-commissioned as a UFP Vessel. The ship is older than the NX-01. It just got assigned the registry 'NX-326' years later when the Federation was formed. She would have got her dedication plaque at this time too, so the plaque is probably about half as old as the ship, hence it looking more modern.

      It's worth noting, that according to Memory Alpha, the dedication plaque on the bridge has a gap between the "k" and "l" as well. So it does actually say U.S.S. FRANK LIN.
      The ships registry number (NX-326) is in honor of Leonard Nimoy's birthday--March, 26th.
      If you were to buy Moebius Models U.S.S. Franklin 1/350 model kit, you can also buy aftermarket/hird-party parts to use the U.S.S. Frank Lin name/registry (as well as a few others) instead.

      Saucer is chonky while the pylons are overengineered. I like it too, and in comparison I think some of the designs from Enterprise got a little too sleek too fast.
      Like the warp 2 barrier ship from that flashback episode looks pretty Phoenix-y, but after that the other ships they showed (such as the Intrepid and stuff, with triangular and semicircular saucers) just looked more like regressed TOS designs to me than actually looking like a missing link type deal.
      The Franklin doesn’t look like the Phoenix either, but it definitely looks more like they wanted it to be able to handle various stresses, possibly even minor collisions with space dust at speed, and stuff like that.

      Of the three Kelvin Timeline movies, I like _Star Trek Beyond_ the most because it was written and directed by people who gave a damn and you can _feel_ the _Trek_ deeply embedded in the movie. Yes, _Beyond_ under-performed at the box office, and its pacing is off in a few spots, but it's charming enough that- IMO- it successfully overshadows the flaws and errors of its own two immediate predecessors.
      On personal rankings, I place _Star Trek Beyond_ above all of the bad movies they made- including _Generations, Nemesis_ and _The Final Frontier._

I'll admit, my only meaningful exposure to Star Trek has been through the JJ films, and I must say I was fascinated by this ship when I saw it, Old Sci-fi tech has always struck a chord with me, whether it's the Y-Wings in Star Wars or the Warthogs in Halo, vehicles still serving and doing heroic things well after they were meant to be retired does a lot more for me than contemporary vehicles filling their design briefs

    I really loved this little ship. There was something so charming about it, and I really loved the Enterprise NX-01 era callbacks like the uniforms of the Franklin's original crew and its "classical" music. lol
    Also just love the idea that this old ship, almost a beta test version of the NX series, gets stranded on this planet, loses its original crew, is used as a half buried house essentially by someone for decades, against all odds when reactivated still works and carries the crew of the Enterprise to the end of the day when their fancy new Enterprise is torn to shreds and still manages to more or less remain intact when finally back in Federation hands. That thing better be honored and put into a museum because that is quite the journey.

    Say what you want about the JJ films but I love the Franklin.
    It looks unique, has a nice story behind it and has that tough-little-ship charm to it. As an ENT fan I really liked it's addition and the feel of this ship, both as an partial instigator for the plot and the means to save the day. The shot of it coming out of the water and bearing the brunt of those swarm ships is one of my favourite scenes in Trek.
    I like to imagine they salvaged the Franklin after the attack and fixed her up to working status, becoming the mascot of Yorktown kind of like the real life USS Constitution.

  • @richardched6085
    @richardched6085 4 года назад +4

    I always thought that TOS used a revised Warp Scale in which Warp 4 is equal to Warp 7 in the ENT era. And that the Franklin was the first vessel to reach Warp 7 in 2158. It would be a smaller, cheaper alternative to the NX class Starship and would be deployed en masse during the Earth Romulan War. Pulsed Phase Cannons were a new invention as of 2154 and Photonic Torpedoes were based on Vissian Photonic Weapons (And undoubtedly very expensive) which is why the Franklin used the much older Spatial Torpedoes (Which are presumably Advanced Nukes). The registry number NX-326 is it's launch Registry as Starfleet had expanded considerably since 2155. The Franklin would be rebranded a Federation Starship in 2161 and would embark on a 4 year Mission of Exploration during which it was presumed lost in the Gagarin Radiation Belt in 2164.

    Some UFP admiral: "Let's recommission this old relic and give it to this guy we just made a captain because we didn't know what to do with him now the MACO's aren't a thing anymore. Let's not update the engines or the transporter, even though we are literally decommissioning ships with more advanced systems that these as being obsolete."
    Starfleet basically told Edison to go fuck himself when they presented him with the Franklin. Even the ships that had replaced it were themselves outdated by the time Edison got his hands on this ship - the NX-01, the next iteration design from the Freedom class was on its way to be retired from service just prior to the inauguration of the Federation, and the recommission of the Franklin as the USS Franklin occurred even later than that.

    • @Fimbulvinter19
      @Fimbulvinter19 4 года назад +3

      @@shaftoe195 I am not confused. I was pointing out the necessary plot issue with presenting Edison with the Franklin when more advanced models were awaiting decommissioning and scrapping. I'm well aware that the NX-02 Colombia was still in service beyond the formation of the Federation, but I fail to see how that was relevant to this discussion, especially since that actually only serves to further highlight my original point by making the Franklin even more out of date than it already was. It might have been better than nothing, sure, but, as a comparison, it would be like giving a person today a WWII propeller fighter plane when more advanced jets are idling in a hanger decommissioned as obsolete. Completely unsuitable to handle the needs of the time.
      It was a necessary plot point, showing how little the newly formed Federation cared for him now that he was considered an antiquated relic himself that they couldn't spare the effort to upgrade the ship's engines or internal tech to what was at the time considered the bare minimum. It was an insult to him, and I feel intended to just get him out of sight while the Federation restructures itself into a more pacifistic organisation than the MACO's would be suited for.
      The Miranda and Excelsior class ships would receive upgrades throughout their lifespan, incorporating improving tech in order to help keep them relevant against newer designs. They didn't do this for the Franklin, sending it out in its stock model form when more advanced technology was available.

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 3 года назад +1

      @@shaftoe195 I really liked how the point about the Columbia being so different was integrated into the story, since so many inaugural ships of a class do have tons of small and large changes vs later ones, and are indeed often decommissioned early if retrofitting is deemed to be about as expensive as building a whole new one.
      I just feel like Trek didn’t really go into that very much elsewise, when they absolutely could’ve to some large or small degree with the Defiant, the Excelsior, and possibly the Intrepid classes.
      Plus it served a narrative purpose too: Archer was all excited to get the first one his dad dreamed about, and I think he was later kind of jealous of Columbia being in many ways so much better. Even though of course it couldn’t have happened without the… 3? retrofits his team did on the Enterprise in those first couple years.

    Not sure it's more than 25% different than a _Loknar_ class. But putting it earlier in the timeline works. Also, interesting way to split the difference between Classic and JJ aesthetic, so to accommodate the eventual timeline split.

      I was wondering if anyone else saw the similarity. Granted, the Loknar class was only ever in the FASA Star Trek roleplaying game, but it actually had me geeking out hoping there would be more references to that background material, as non-canon as it was.

    Um... The Freedom Class Transporters WERE NOT cleared for BIO-USE and Canon also states this as Lcdr. Scott (Scotty) had to make alterations to the system on the Franklin to make it barely safe for bio-matter transport. Also, It was a continuity mistake that it had phase canons or spatial torpedoes as, those were newly developed weapons on the NX-01 Enterprise which came after the Franklin as the first warp 5 vessel. The biggest continuity issue is the Xindi war, which didnt occur until the time of the NX01, Enterprise long after the Franklin was in service/lost.

    While i am a bit meh on the Kelvin timeline generally I do like the look and feel of this ship, which feels very much like it fits in the 'Enterprise' era. It probably helps that it is the first craft you can use as a United Earth player in the 'Star Trek New Civilizations' mod for Stellaris so I have a lot of fondness for this humble but surprisingly capable little vessel.

    If my head cannon, ships of this class are still being used around the Sol system, and especially ESD. Acting as a tug/transport ship, it wouldn't need to be particularly fast, well armed or well armoured. In fact it is almost perfect for acting as a tug; it's a highly maneuverable ship with great sub light speeds and a spaceframe strong enough to withstand the strains of pulling something like a galaxy class. A lot of the internal space can be given over to better engines and a strong tractor beam. You can get rid of crew quarters and recreational rooms as they would be operating from a large star base.
    And let's be honest, with how long star fleet have kept the excelsior class in service, it isn't too much of a stretch to have these whizzing about ESD.

    This is what the NX-01 should've looked like, bridge, small size, and all (though newer). It seemed a better representation of what might come between older NASA/Earth-types and Starfleet. Instead, we got upside-down Akira with a more standard Star Trek interior (though at least a bit more utilitarian).

    NX was meant to denote a prototype ship (Defiant and Excelsior), which would then switch to an NCC registration once mass productin begins. Seems like the Enterprise writers did not realise this and decided NX should be a class. Stupid recons are not a new thing. I think NX is an offical US naval designation, and probably where they got the idea from.

Hell, make it an NX refit not unlike the 1701. That would have enriched the class without pissing people off so much.

I'm sure it was a little while before warp 5 came along after this ship was commissioned. Or was the transporter added after it's in service date?

      Yeah I could see it being a transporter from 2165 or 2170 or something. I imagine most people would still be skeevy about it then as they were in 2154, and from Scotty’s point of view they’re probably still just barely suitable for human transport compared to what he’s used to.
