  • This may be the Bye Week for my Ohio Bobcats, but college football news is still developing! This is Bobcat Corner Episode 25, and here I discuss the latest moves made by the Mountain West Conference and the PAC-12. By all intents and purposes, you can call this a "Conference Realignment Battlefield" and see that these two western conferences are scrambling to make moves! Let the games begin, I guess?
Also, I share my thoughts on reports that the MWC has expressed interest in Northern Illinois and Toledo, schools that currently reside in the conference I closely follow, the Mid-American Conference (MAC).

It was reported that Texas St informed the Sun Belt conference that is was NO longer considering joining the MWC, they did not say anything about the Pac 12 or AAC so I assume both are still talking to Texas State.

PAC12 is working on one or more AAC members and a TV deal. Gonzaga BB will be very attractive to those ends.

From what I read the TV deal is with the CW that carries Pac 12 and ACC games now, based on roughly who they have now its $8 million per team, a little less for Gonzaga since they have no football and depending upon who they add it could go up to $15 million per team, Gonzaga certainly raises their value and prestige. Having 6 teams that made the tournament last year, 4 of whom advanced and two teams that have made the national championship in the last four years makes them a top tier hoops conference. Reports are they are still talking to Texas State and Memphis certainly left the door open to further negotiations $, also rumor in the Bay Area media is they are going after UNCONN football with a side deal for a long term non conference scheduling agreement between UCONN basketball and the top hoops teams in the Pac 12. I also read they may just add one or two teams now to get to that minimum 8 in football for 2026 then add more in 2027, specifically add AAC teams later because that HUGE AAC exit fee drops a ton if they get 27 months or more notice and its too late for that now for 2026 and lack of aid from the Pac 12 to pay those AAC exit fees seems to be the major sticking point according to Memphis AD.

Gonzaga Basketball is valued at $10 mil. The Zags elevate the Pac from a nice basketball Conference to an eye popper. People are noticing. This works for the Zags as well. They are tripling their revenue.
Win - win for both sides

@@deanfirnatine7814no one from the AAC is joining the PAC because it is not better nor more powerful and valuable than the AAC. Plus G6 schools East of the Rockies and East of the Mississippi River will not and cannot afford 6-8 trips to Pacific Time Zone for football and in all other sports would be 3-4 times as many out West.

Texas State is no longer considering the MWC. Sam Houston State might be in play for the MWC. As well as Tarleton State.

Yeah. I basically said that in this video. Texas State is off the board for the MWC. Thanks for watching, Bill. 👍

MWC has 7 FBS schools. They need 8 and have a two year grace period to get to 8. A FCS school has a 2 year transition period until they are full FBS.
So the MWC can invite one or more FBS school for 26. So the 26 and 27 seasons would be their two year grace periods. That coincides with the FCS schools two year transition period. So in 2028, the MWC would be a full FBS conference.
So, they could add Sac St, Tarleton, the Montanas and Dakotas.

Walk off Home Run for the Pac and Gonzaga. The Pacs curb appeal improved greatly.
If they can land Memphis, ka-boom !

Gonzaga's issue with the WCC wasn't competition at all. They have the best out of conference schedule each year and in conference St. Mary's. Gonzaga wanted money which is great for them.
The addition of Gonzaga was hige for the PAC 12. Loom how many tournament teams from 2024 the PAC 12. Now just throw some money at Memphis and Witchita state and get some basketball going in a Western conference..
Memphis will help in football as well. Hell get Grand Canyon and St Mary's ober and have a basketball super conference.
They will have a great presence in other spirts like baseball was well.

3:45 Gonzaga bolsters the Pacs profile a little ?
    lol
This was a home run for the Pac.

No doubt, it absolutely helps the PAC-12 from a basketball standpoint. It's an okay addition for now, and I'll like it more if the PAC adds some full-time members to go with it.

It would not make sense for NIU or Toledo to move to the Mountain West. The only way in which the money might be worth it is if they were joining a Power 4 conference, but those offers aren't going to be coming. Therefore, it is best for those schools to stay in the MAC.

NMSU is so close to UTEP...they share the same tv mnarket and recruitment area.....the MW wants to expand to diff. areas of texas for a greater media viewership and recruitment. NMSU and UNLV used to be great rivals but it's about making the MW into a more wider viewership and timezones so it helps the MW in tv contracts so they are available in multiple time zones. I like the idea of TARLETON ST so the MW is in the dallas-fort worth area. I also am intriged by Sam Houston State too.

I am positive no AAC schools are going to join the PAC and definitely not the MWC. Also no MAC schools to PAC or MWC either. Now the MAC schools, some SBC schools, the Dakota schools and other FCS powerhouse schools in the central and eastern part of the country could or would show interest in the AAC. The Dakota schools and a few other FCS schools are definitely looking at the AAC. The MAC schools could be if networks allow and align with their value and quality.
