Episode 29 of Bobcat Corner discusses the importance of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) needing to re-evaluate its position in college athletics. Some of your thoughts are spot on and some not. The PAC12 has absolutely no interest in New Mexico State. The Mtn. West would be a much better fit. I think you are right about Sacramento State. The Montana schools could be valuable to the Mtn. West as a pair, breaking them up would be a mistake. Not so sure about North Dakota State and South Dakota State. They both have good football programs but the travel may be too much. Now about the PAC12, they can have all sorts of teams that are ready to jump. Adding numbers for the sake of numbers reduces their value for football contracts. Their best direction is a school that does not diminish their present status. The school they want is UNLV. They will do what is necessary to get the "Runnin' Rebels."

    See nothing against tarelton State. I haven't heard anything about that program. But tarelton just recently joined the FCS and have not made the FCS playoffs yet. Because they just joined. Their playoffs eligible this year. But NDSU has made the FCS playoffs every year since eligibility. And NDSU has won 9 of the last 11 national FCS championships. They are 9-1 in the national championship game. SDSU has won the last 2. NDSU is also 9-5 against FBS programs. They beat Kansas jayhawks, Kansas state wildcats, Iowa state cyclones, #13 Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Golden gophers twice, Ball state, Central Michigan, Colorado State. They lost to Wyoming by a field goal. They lost to Colorado by 5 points this season. NDSU has alot of current active players in the NFL. NDSU is The face of MVFC along with SDSU. NDSU is the flagship of the FCS. Tarelton State may be good from what I heard But I say let tarelton state play against SDSU and NDSU and see how they really fair to 2 very good powerhouses or the Montana schools who are powerhouses as well. Let's see how they fair to those 4 programs because Tarelton State has not faced them yet. I only heard that they are good. But they never played these4 schools in the FCS. At least I know they haven't played NDSU and SDSU. Both NDSU and SDSU have won the last 11 FCS National Championships this decade. NDSU won it 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 and then again in 2017, 2018, and 2019 and 2021. SDSU won it 2022 and 2023. And this year NDSU beat SDSU 13 to 9. While tarelton state may be beating teams by over 14 points a game. They never played SDSU or NDSU and their defenses are elite. Both have very good defenses. If Tarelton State can beat SDSU and NDSU then I say maybe they good enough to play in the FBS. But right now NDSU and SDSU are more ready for the move to the FBS. If MWC get a package deal for both NDSU and SDSU those 2 programs can be the face of the MWC. They both could put MWC in the CFP. And probably make deep runs in the the Playoffs. They could probably bring MWC a national championship to that conference. That's how good those 2 programs are. NDSU is a 5 star program. SDSU 4 star program but very close to being a 5 star program. They are about 4 and a half stars. One more playoff appearance this year and they would be considered a 5 star program. Which they have already clinched a playoff spot this year in the FCS. NDSU or both NDSU and SDSU are big wins for the MWC to add. While Tarelton State may be a good program and school and have everything they need to make a jump to FBS because they have the money to make the jump. They Still have alot to prove in the FCS. They play in a conference that FCS doesn't have listed for official records. NDSU and SDSU both play the MVFC which is the SEC version of the FCS and the Montana schools are in the big sky conference which is the big 10 version of the FCS. Tarelton does not play programs like NDSU and SDSU and Montana and Montana State year in and year out every year. Tarelton faces at best 3 to 2 star programs within their conference. The Montana schools are both 5 star programs. NDSU a 5 star program and SDSU basically a 5 star program. UIW is a 4 star program. Guess what? Sam Houston State that just recently joined the FBS lost to both NDSU and SDSU. Now yes they beat NDSU in 2022 to lose to SDSU in the national championship game. But NDSU has beat them twice in 2011, and 2012 for the national championship. And they beat them 2 more times before 2022 in the playoffs. Then you look at the coastal Carolina. NDSU beat them twice. And they are now FBS. James Madison. NDSU beat them 3 times and they beat NDSU twice. They are now FBS. Georgia Southern lost to NDSU twice in the playoffs. And they are now in the FBS. MO State who is joining next year in the FBS plays right now in the MVFC against NDSU this upcoming Saturday and lost to NDSU and lost to SDSU alot of times. But this year MO State is 8-2 overall and are 6-0 in conference play and NDSU is 9-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play. NDSU just has this game and next game left before they are done with their season until playoffs start. They win out and NDSU is #1 seed in the FCS playoffs. SDSU is 8-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play and USD is 7-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play and Illionis State is 7-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play. NDSU beat Illionis State this season. NDSU beat SDSU this season. The only 2 games remaining for NDSU is MO State and USD. NDSU plays MO State nov.16th and the following week against USD. But anyways what I'm trying to say is let Tarelton State establish themselves first in the FCS for a bit. At least for a couple of years and play in tougher conferences within the FCS. Like the MVFC or Big Sky. See how well they fair in those conferences. How many playoff runs they get consistently and how many national championship appearances they get. Because NDSU has 10 FCS National championship appearances and have 15 straight FCS playoff appearances since 2010. This year will be NDSU's 15th straight playoff appearance since 2010. NDSU is 43-4 in the fcs playoffs overall. 9 national FCS championships. 9-1 in the FCS championship game. NDSU has 10 MVFC conference championships. NDSU is well deserving of a FBS invite

    Honestly North Dakota State would be a great add for MWC. They lost Boise State to pac12. NDSU could become the new face of the MWC and be the powerhouse for them. NDSU would definitely help draw interest for MWC to garner more prestige with CFB Playoffs.

    Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that NIU fans really want to go to the MWC. Why? OK, I suppose if all sports went it might be OK, but football only? If I'm NIU, a hard pass. I understand some clueless TV fool is behind this. OK, clueless TV fool, you want it, then find a way for ALL NIU sports to benefit. I get why the MAC should look east or perhaps south, if they lose NIU. Therefore, I might look at Eastern KY, Youngstown, or some of the Pennsylvania schools. Marshall of course, would be great!

    Media companies agree go give conferences a set amount of cash on what they think the value for the teams currently in that conference. Adding more teams will most likely lower the payout per school. Same amount of pie but more slices equals lees money per school. This is why the PAC12 is doing things the way they are. Oregon St, WSU, BSU, SDSU, Gonzaga, & Fresno add the most media value. CSU adds the local market plus the are spending $$$ on their athletic budget & facilities. Utah St has good basket ball & football time to time. There are only two other schools out there that could possible add value to a media deal close to Oregon St, WSU, BSU, SDSU, Gonzaga, & Fresno. Memphis & Tulane are those two teams; next in line would be S. Florida & UTSA. If Memphis leaves then a couple of others may follow. They are waiting to see what the PAC can come up with in the Media discussions. I got the schools media values from a website that covers media deals & values. If none of those four end up leaving for the PAC12, I am certain that Texas State would be next on their list. For the teams currently aligned to be in the PAC in 2026 I have heard estimates to be 10-15 million. For the new MWC, 2-4 million. The PAC12 only wishes to build to 9-10 schools, for scheduling purposes and to keep the media payouts (per school) as high as possible.

      Thanks for your comments, jeh58. I really appreciate it! I admit that I'm not the brightest bulb of the bunch when it comes to crunching numbers with TV media deals. I'd assume that estimated values for each conference will change ever so often.

    I think there still is a possibility that NIU could leave stop the MAC for the MWC. I just don't see any way that Toledo would join the MWC. That being said, I think all of these inquiries were to meet the demands of the other conferences in FBS. You can say that the mwc did not inquire it's almost every FBS opportunity they could possibly get. Which means adding FCS tools doesn't look so bad. I think Tarleton State and NDSU are the two top targets of the MWC. I think the main reason that the NIU talk has waned is having a difficult time finding a hole for the other sports. I could be wrong.

    • @STVCastle
      @STVCastle Месяц назад

      Yeah. Despite McMurphy's latest report, I still get this feeling that NIU to the MWC is a strong possibility. We'll just have to wait and see. And to your point, I agree. I think that was one big reason why MWC had these enquiries about NIU and Toledo. Threatened by Sankey and Petitti not to bring up anymore FCS schools until the time is better for them. Tarleton State to the MWC is destined to happen. NDSU with SDSU should be considered. And back to NIU, yeah, this is why it can be so difficult adding them as a Football-Only member. Their football team is taken care of, but what about every other sports team they have? I know about travel, but if the MWC wants to invest in NIU, they might as well go all the way.

  • @TheAveragejoe333
    @TheAveragejoe333 Месяц назад

    What are your thoughts on this now after what we heard today from Brett McMurphy and the likelihood of this still happening? Or do you think it’s more likely they reject and MWC moves on to NDSU or others?

    • @STVCastle
      @STVCastle Месяц назад

      I read that post by McMurphy just hours after I posted this video. Apparently NIU's interest in joining the MWC as a Football-Only member is starting to wane. If that's the case and NIU and Toledo actually stay in the MAC, then as MAC fans we can have a sigh of relief. North Dakota State is much more logical of a choice for MWC expansion compared to NIU in many ways. We'll just wait and see. I still believe the MAC has to start making moves even if we keep NIU and Toledo.

  • @mmmcounts
    @mmmcounts Месяц назад

    The MAC is uniquely good at having a sensible footprint involving member programs that have a lot in common. Mid week football games notwithstanding, a lot of what happens is within driving distance and travel costs are relatively manageable. However, something has occurred to me as we look at possibilities for expansion. Down at the FCS level, the MVFC along with the MVC seem to have worked out the perfect system. The MVFC is football only, and that conference adds worthy football programs solely on the basis of the football program. Meanwhile, the MVC will add the Olympic sports if that makes sense and if not, they don't. They will also add worthy members that don't have a football program. The footprint of the MVFC and MVC pretty well aligns with where the MAC is at, and I think it would be foolish if the MAC didn't take a similar approach and simply replicate what's been done at the lower level. I do believe the MAC should make several additions in football only- SDSU, NDSU, and Northern Iowa (the other NIU). I don't think the conference should add any of them in all sports at any point. Additionally, if you can get the interest if either school, either Illinois St or Southern Illinois would also be good additions and that should happen in all sports. Northern Illinois is over here in the western portion of the conference trying to have a real rivalry with one of these Ohio programs, and that's not a long term solution. One more program from the state if Illinois would be a fantastic rivalry for NIU (Illinois), and Illinois St would probably be preferable on the whole. In terms of basketball focus, I do believe the MVC has done a great thing by getting Loyola of Chicago together with UIC. The city of Chicago has some of the highest density of elite basketball talent in the world, and it makes all the sense in the world to have two programs in the city within the same conference. The MAC should grab both of those programs and try to build a wall around that basketball talent. I do believe it would also make sense to add Dayton, but you want to hold off on pursuing their football program unless and until they join the MVFC, have real success there, and build a larger stadium while upgrading other facilities. It would also help if one or more current Ohio members of the MAC leave the conference, and that is entirely realistic. I think that's a good first step. I do realize the conference has 13 full members once UMass is in, and if I got all of what I just asked for, the conference would have 17 in football and 17 in Olympic sports. Those numbers are not great, so let's say I get 3 or the 4 that I asked for in each category. This is the general idea, though- take the best of the MVFC and add those football programs and only those football programs, and then generally speaking add Olympic sports only if the school is within your region. It does make a certain amount of sense to try and find travel partners for UMass, but let's be honest guys- I don't know if UMass is cut out for the FBS level. I do not know if that school is going to last as a MAC member in the long term.

    It would not make sense for NIU or Toledo to move to the Mountain West. The only way in which the money might be worth it is if they were joining a Power 4 conference, but those offers aren't going to be coming. Therefore, it is best for those schools to stay in the MAC.

    • @ABQREDorGREEN

      I disagree completely. The invite is for Football only, according to Gloria the MWC is looking at a 6-8M payout, this is significantly higher then what the MAC pays. Additionally, for Travel you are only looking at 4-5 games a year, subtracting the cost to currently travel with those travel games will only be maybe 100 to 150K more .

    Get Out of here!!!! This Video is Ridiculous 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Gonzaga is a Huge Deal. UTEP is a Nothing Team that doesn't move the needle. They don't add Anything to the Prestige of the Mountain West. They are Not a Winning college Athletic Program. Adding UTEP just adds another Bottom Basement team to the Mountain West. This will Not help them in TV Negotiations. Gonzaga is Moving ALL of their Sports teams to the PAC they are Not a "Part time member" They are ALL in. They are Not a 1 Sport School!!!! So what that Gonzaga doesn't' have a Football program they are a Premier Basketball school. (UTEP doesn't compete at a High level in any Sport!!!) Gonzaga is a Top 10 National Basketball 🏀 program. Gonzaga will Help land the PAC 12 a National TV Contract. Gonzaga has been to the NCAA Basketball Tournament for 25 straight seasons. The ACC and the Big 12 have already said they are interested in playing the PAC 12 in Basketball 🏀 this is bringing in Big TV 💵 💰 money. This puts the PAC on ESPN, CBS, all of the Big TV Networks. Right now the CW is in Negotiations to get a National TV Contract in place with the PAC too. Your Analysis in this Video is Horrible!!!!

    I am positive no AAC schools are going to join the PAC and definitely not the MWC. Also no MAC schools to PAC or MWC either. Now the MAC schools, some SBC schools, the Dakota schools and other FCS powerhouse schools in the central and eastern part of the country could or would show interest in the AAC. The Dakota schools and a few other FCS schools are definitely looking at the AAC. The MAC schools could be if networks allow and align with their value and quality.

    The pac 12 / 6-7 has really shown how little a pac 12 education means. The mountain west threw you a life line, and a season agreement, you signed an agreement and promised not to poach then you poach and then you sue the mountain west. This is ego over common sense. The pac 2 should have just merged with the mountain west, not you going after lower schools to survive. God what a bunch of pin heads

    NMSU is so close to UTEP...they share the same tv mnarket and recruitment area.....the MW wants to expand to diff. areas of texas for a greater media viewership and recruitment. MWC has 7 FBS schools. They need 8 and have a two year grace period to get to 8. A FCS school has a 2 year transition period until they are full FBS. So the MWC can invite one or more FBS school for 26. So the 26 and 27 seasons would be their two year grace periods. That coincides with the FCS schools two year transition period. So in 2028, the MWC would be a full FBS conference. So, they could add Sac St, Tarleton, the Montanas and Dakotas.

The addition of Gonzaga was hige for the PAC 12. Loom how many tournament teams from 2024 the PAC 12. Now just throw some money at Memphis and Witchita state and get some basketball going in a Western conference.. Memphis will help in football as well. From what I read the TV deal is with the CW that carries Pac 12 and ACC games now, based on roughly who they have now its $8 million per team, a little less for Gonzaga since they have no football and depending upon who they add it could go up to $15 million per team, Gonzaga certainly raises their value and prestige. Having 6 teams that made the tournament last year, 4 of whom advanced and two teams that have made the national championship in the last four years makes them a top tier hoops conference. Reports are they are still talking to Texas State and Memphis certainly left the door open to further negotiations $, also rumor in the Bay Area media is they are going after UNCONN football with a side deal for a long term non conference scheduling agreement between UCONN basketball and the top hoops teams in the Pac 12. I also read they may just add one or two teams now to get to that minimum 8 in football for 2026 then add more in 2027, specifically add AAC teams later because that HUGE AAC exit fee drops a ton if they get 27 months or more notice and its too late for that now for 2026 and lack of aid from the Pac 12 to pay those AAC exit fees seems to be the major sticking point according to Memphis AD.

    Couple notes, the MAC no longer sponsors men's soccer, so presumably uconn's soccer programs would remain in the Big East. Also, the Big East doesn't sponsor hockey. UConn plays in the Hockey East conference. I don't see any reason to split the programs. None of them offer any value outside of football and basketball, so there's no reason for the MAC to want them and UConn enjoys having their olympic sports in the Big East where half the conference is still relatively close by. I suppose there's some value in moving your football to the MAC, but it's not like it would be a huge step up in terms of money, exposure or recruiting from what they're currently doing. I think the MAC schools are getting somewhere in the ballpark of 1 million per year. UConn has their own football rights deal with cbssn for a couple hundred thousand, on top of the 7 million a year from the Big East basketball deal. I don't think it significantly improves their standing or gets them any closer to a power conference bid in the future.

    • @STVCastle

      I didn't hear anything about the MAC no longer sponsoring men's soccer. You can always switch around sports programs in the graphic. I said this wasn't concrete anyway. Honestly, try to come up with a much better plan than what I proposed here. Sitting on their hands for 10+ years and hoping and waiting for the Big XII and ACC to call them isn't doing UConn any favors either. Take what you can get. If the MAC opens a door for them, even if temporarily, UConn should use common sense and enter through that door.

      @@STVCastleYou're correct that UConn doesn't have a lot of great options and I think football-only membership in the MAC is something they would consider for sure. I don't know if it offers substantial benefits to them or the MAC, though, which is probably why it hasn't already happened. (not 100% on this but I think it was something that was discussed after UConn moved back to the Big East and it didn't go anywhere) It's also possible that UConn thinks it's better off as an independent than being in the MAC and I'm not entirely sure they're wrong.

    • @STVCastle
      @STVCastle 2 месяца назад

      @@MDK384 Just my opinion, but for UConn to stay independent in football and hope that the Big XII and ACC takes them is a foolish strategy long-term. They need to have a resume/proven track record of what they can do in a conference. They can't show anything to the Big XII or ACC if they're not competing in any conference now. At least being in the MAC ensures that UConn can have a proven track record to show when they feel ready to join a Power Conference.

    A large number of UConn basketball fans would be exceptionally happy if UConn disbanded its football team or next best option moved to FCS. I know, I think that they're insane also, but I think that they truly believe it. With regard to your 9-9 plan, UConn should take that before the ink is dry on the offer. However, it makes no sense for the MAC. There is no benefit to the MAC from competing against UConn's track or cross country teams, among others. What would provide benefit to the MAC is UConn's basketball teams competing in MAC arenas.

    • @STVCastle
      @STVCastle 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for your comment, Terry. I appreciate it. I totally understand what you mean, but here's the thing. Most likely the Big East would fight like crazy to keep UConn Men's and Women's Basketball in their conference if they were to negotiate with the MAC in this What If scenario. The Big East would probably say "No deal" if the MAC wanted the basketball programs as part of their package. That's partly why I set it up the way I did in the visual. The MAC can take UConn Men's Baseball and Women's Softball, and Men's and Women's Soccer to buffer their package with the Football Huskies. And yeah, the small Olympic sports don't make a lot of money, but sometimes you gotta even it out so both parties can be happy in negotiations.

      @@STVCastle Are you aware of the value of each of these conferences' media rights deals?
