- Shoppers are scrambling to take advantage of deals after learning all 99 Cents Only stores are closing.
The discount store made the announcement Thursday saying they plan to close all of their store locations in California, Arizona, Nevada and Texas.
Customers in Arden-Arcade say they're saddened and heartbroken to learn the news because they use it for staple items like milk, eggs and fresh produce.

Also many many employees are quitting to go to fast food restaurants for the higher pay ($20hr). I was just at the local 99 Cents store a couple of days ago for my cleaning solutions and I asked the cashier, "where is everyone at?" and she said," most employees quit for fast food jobs, now we are short-handed!" I said, "dang that sucks" and then the manager was standing there and she said, "well I have been an assistant manager here for almost 4 years and I only get $18.50 an hour". Our local hotdog shop announced he was closing last month after 12 years in business, as two of his 4 employees went across the street to the chicken place that's closed on Sundays, and one more was planning on leaving. The chicken place starting pay is now $22hr and they still have lines out of the parking lot, though he did not need to raise his wages because of only having the one location, it still got him. I am sorry this is just so sad for everyone all the way round...
Even though he doesn't need to pay the $20 an hour, he still needs to compete in the local labor market for employees so it definitely affects him. Our politicians are total retards that never took an Econ class in their life or else they would know you CANNOT just arbitrarily raise the minimum wage like this because eventually everything just catches up. Everything these new $20 employees will spend their money on will increase in price and their buying power has not increased. Only one that benefits is the same government who initiated this for increased sales tax and income tax now.

Dollar tree doesn't compare grocery wise.
Walmart is better, you can get beans and soups for 88 cents.
@kylep3759 I agree. I actually had not been in a 99 cent store in a few years until about 2 weeks ago. I was super disappointed to see how much things had changed.
@kylep3759 I was just saying to the people saying they will shop at dollar tree now instead, there's really no comparison between the two. Dollar tree doesn't sell produce or anything
Yes and dollar tree is no longer a dollar. In fact a lot of their items are now higher than Walmart.
Dollar Tree is also closing....Another 370 Family Dollar stores and about 30 Dollar Tree stores will close over the next several years as their leases expire, the press release said

I had a great childhood because this store existed! I got my school supplies, my snacks, my first lip smackers, toys etc from this store. Sad to see it go!
Agreed... back in my day, late '60s , early '70s we loved going to the variety store to get toys and candies, 99 was great because they had great staples (for a struggling single person) as well as surprise items that were new, weird or unique.

I used to work security at these stores and YES theft is the major reason. We are powerless against them so all we can do is get descriptions and call police. Observe and Report they say...
I worked at the 99 and I definitely agree there's a shoplifting problem, I'm glad I got a new job now lol xD
I went into one last week. The prices were not good. The selection was not good. The service was not good. I walked out without buying a single thing. Can't really say I'm surprised.
Turns out you can't run a high volume low margin business when your customers are also stealing 20 times a day. Was wondering when this unsustainable business model was going to end.
My local store always has a line, and is always busy. The often have organic produce, great assortment of culinary mushrooms, cactus for my tortoise, and unsalted peanuts in the shell for my crow friends in the neighborhood. I also buy flowers from them to treat myself. I don't understand...they are doing well in my rich town.
It's Recession . No income it's starvation.
We made rugs for DDS, and in the last 3 months they completely stopped making orders. And now i know why!
corner grocery stores at these locations, “El Camino at Howe” changed always, “Farmers Market” the 70s “Alpha Beta” the 80s etc. move on to backyard gardens or “Market Basket” somewhere

Do not go to dollar tree. Go to dollar general which has more quality and quantity. For food go to Aldi's. I say again. Go to Aldi's.

that place was packed during the two years of the pandemic.
Probably all the stores will become Safeway in the end.
They have been going downhill for a long time it started out as a 99 Cent Only then went to a $1.99 and then next thing you know things are almost the same price as what you get in the regular store except for these are lesson standard products I give you for instance I was living homeless in LA county and I will go into 99 Cent Only store and they would have these really cool products that were really useful for like $4.99 and 599 and they were breaking a day or two
