- Data from the University of Southern California showed that about a million LA County households don't have enough to eat. The closure of 99 Cent Store locations could make things tougher. Amber Frias reports for the NBC4 News on April 15, 2024.

I used to work at the 99c store while the owner was STILL ALIVE!!! The business was thriving as long as the owner was ALIVE!!! But you are right!!! Once the owner died, the business died as well sadly!!! I MISS the original owner!! He was a geniune man that really cared for his community!!!

It hasn't been much of a bargain in the last 4 years, I always compare prices and noticed that a lot of the stuff is just as expensive or more expensive than the grocery store. I did go there for the vegetables, in some cases it was cheaper but at other times they were old and wilted.
As I said. This store is essential.

BS, the 99c store carries a variety of fruits and vegetables along with legumes and beans...Whole wheat and white grain bread and pastas also available. Its up to the customer what they want to purchase/consume.

I've never found 99 Cent stores to be particularly cheap. It gives the appearance of cheap pricing but it really isn't.

I came from poor to middle class through hard work. If you’re poor, life will always be like this. Rather than making it ok to be poor you need to find a way to rise up. Education or building skills the old way, do something to not be poor. It’s painful and takes sacrifice. That’s why so many don’t make it.

yes, that's what I did. We had no indoor plumbing when I grew up, a well in the back yard and an outhouse down the hill. That motivated me to become more so I could earn more.
My Dad immigrated legally here. Worked a day job, evening job and weekend job. Then later started a business. He never did learn how to read or write very well. It's possible to start with very little. Thanks Dad

thing is, i notice that a lot of 99 cent items are just shrinkflation, which was ok because some people would pay that 99 cents, but when they started adding items and charging more than the 99, it wasn't "pop in, spend 99 cents per item" anymore....gone was the convenience and simplicity. It was actually more convenient to go to a conventional grocery store, even with the higher prices because most people would have to do their regular shopping there anyway.

Yes, Walmart is great, and I've noticed they've actually been lowering prices on some grocery items. However, 99 Cents Only has great deals on random items that are about to expire. Like a pound of bacon for $1. You'll never see that at Walmart

Learn the language. Go to night school. Work hard. Don't have kids until you can afford them. Go to uni. Get a degree in something practical. Work hard for the first five years, saving a minimum of $500 per month in a good interest, locked in, account. Then, once you're established, provided you're in a stable relationship with someone who also works in your profession, then and only then, think about having kids. It's what my ma and pa did.

All you have to do is talk to them. Fruits and vegetables. Farmers market. You better start making friends with farmers. Stop buying your meat from stores. Go to a local meat market shop. The government charges property taxes on the land where crops are grown. It cost money for the equipment and taking care of the crops. It cost labor to do all of it. There is no one place on this Earth where all the food you need for the nutrition you need, is available to pick on unowned land that you can pick yourself for free.
