Oh Shenandoah It's far I wander Away you rolling river Oh Shenandoah It's far I wander Away, I'm bound to roam 'Cross the wide Missouri Shenandoah Though I love your daughters Away you rolling river Oh Shenandoah I love your daughter And I know I'm going away 'Cross the wide, wide Missouri Oh Shenandoah I long to see you Away you rolling river Oh Shenandoah I long to see you And I'm bound, oh, I'm bound to Cross the wide, wide Missouri Shenandoah Oh, I love you, darling Away you rolling river Oh Shenandoah I love your daughter But when I'm bound to go 'Cross the wide Missouri
My father and his friends used to sing in the back of the bus that would bring them from their school to the center of town for movie nights. The bus driver would literally stop the bus to listen to this group of young men sing Shenandoah a cappella. To the day he died my dad sang, he had the voice of an angel, but this was my favorite song to hear him sing, and when I hear Van Morrison sing it, it brings me to tears. Van Morrison is a treasure.
You Van....what a gift to all of us. You so bring back my Daddy to me.Oh many thanks for that😊 He said YOU just like you He came were you come from as well as my Mom. Such insight. I must tell you I saw you in Marin Co at the Lion's Share

A beautiful number by our Irish Rover. It brings tears to my eyes as most of the Rover has is to make it something of a balladeer. The old boy is getting up in years but his voice NEVER shows it.
FABULOUS videos---- MAGNIFICENT music from.the FOREVER GREAT MUSICIANS, The Chieftains and ANOTHER POWERFULLY ARTISTIC PERFORMANCE from the ALWAYS VERSATILE --- Van Morrison---- ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING --- the combination of videos, music and Van Morrison's RENDERING of a GREAT CLASSIC SONG--- LOVE ❤️ Evelyn O'Connor
This is a beautiful song, and is one of my all time favourites. It has a nice melody, with great lyrics and Van Morrison & The Chieftains perform a wonderful version. The Chieftains are a Grammy award winning Irish Traditional Music group from County Dublin, Ireland. The legendary Van Morrison comes from County Antrim, and is a world famous Irish singer/songwriter. His fabulous voice is just amazing on this recording. The song is a track from The Chieftains excellent album ''The Wide World Over: A 40 Year Celebration''. Many thanks to Phillip McConnochie for making and uploading this magnificent video. Enjoy ! Do you know why the song is linked with Ireland? [Thin Lizzy also have an excerpt from the lyrics in their song Roisin Dubh.] I guess because many Irish people migrated to the region of the river in America?
David Cassells: I'm an Irishman from Donegal and the first time I heard the song and without seeing the lyrics, and lacking awareness of the river in the Virginias, I made an emotional association with our river Shannon in Ireland (longest river in the British Isles) - a phonetic as well as emotional association to be more precise. The American civil war is one of my favourite areas of historical study and I associate this wonderful song with Ireland, the Civil War, the Irish in Appalachia and America in general. Who better to wring its inherent beauty than Irishman Van Morrison?
this song was nominated for the grammy award for best pop collaboration with vocals, but it lost to "I Still Have That Other Girl" by Elvis Costello with Burt Bacharach. The other songs nominated in that category are "How Come, How Long" by Babyface & Stevie Wonder, "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" by Jackson Browne & Bonnie Raitt, and "I'm Your Angel" by Celine Dion & R. Kelly. The album the song came from was from "The Long Journey Home: The Irish In America Soundtrack" which won the grammy for best traditional folk album.
Maybe they heard Johnny Mathis version. Not everyone likes this style. Personally l love Van Morrison and his music but Mathis is awesome on certain songs such as this.
Morrison does a great job with this song. I watched a version on TV of "Shenandoah" Van Morrison did with the Chieftains in Dublin in which it was just him and the Chieftains and it sounded great. Had more of the Chieftains in the background. Have never been able to find that version but wish I could.
I thought Sissel's was the most beautiful version of this song, but Morrison's version is hard to top. Simply gorgeous. They're both works of art in different styles.
I totally agree with you that Sissal's version is the best. Especially her performance with the D whistle cameo riff. Likewise, I disagree with Cool Coyote, this version would have never survived more than a brief performance in the limelight. The accolade of traditional equates to the history and staying power of the actual melody and lyrics, not a one off attempt at something slightly different.
Cool Coyote thank you for that. I know I had some time ago on a tape, however it alludes me now. I’ve searched and searched to no avail - but at least I have this to listen to - which I do several times a day
I pay a little more a month than the free access to be able to listen while I'm on other pages, and I am also able to download videos, which I just did.

More then a song, more like a prayer. Touches the very depths of my soul.
I run out of words to say for the beauty of it, I can only sing "I love your daughter", even if Cathal O'Hogan doesn't like it very much

Yes, where can it be found? Not on Spotify-only on You Tube, near as I can tell.
