I remember JM said he talks to addicts like this when they are not holding themselves accountable for their behavior. He said he gives them tough love and make them so uncomfortable so they’ll take responsibility for what they’ve done. Once they start making excuses they get the tongue lashing. He definitely talked to this lady crazy. I think she’s high in court but nobody is higher than his ego gets sometimes.

@@hunnybeee6702 If she didn't go to rehab, it wasn't because of anything that JM said. She might have used it as another excuse. That's typical thinking of an addict. I believe that the people commenting on the thread are kind and empathetic; so, you take offense at how JM is speaking to the defendant. He, IMO, is using a form of confrontational or attack therapy. But he's not a therapist, he is a judge. I think he's going overboard; however, I think some of the commenters are going overboard in the opposite direction. Both extremes can be damaging to a person in active addiction. Right, all heroin addicts don't steal (but MANY do), all heroin addicts don't lie (but MANY do). It is difficult to maintain an addiction without being manipulative or breaking the law in some manner. Being naive about addiction does not help.

@@sdot.1701 That's true and you are correct. This entire thread is based in large part on personal perspectives. Mine is one also, but it's rooted in my experience of working with addicts. I talk nicer to people, but in reality, I'm saying the same thing that JM is saying. It is more than a notion (as the old folks say) to try to reason with a person whose entire life is based on compulsive and manipulative behaviors.
A quick example of someone I worked with. From the day I met them, I "knew" (or greatly surmised) that they were "lying" (not being open or honest) about almost everything they were saying. Two years down the line, "You know, Ms. Serene, that I wasn't really telling you the truth about things I was doing". In my mind I was saying "no duh".
Now because I'm a therapist and not a judge or parole officer, I refrain from calling people names such as "crackhead" and telling them they are liars. (that's just not me). I try to use strength-based techniques and treat them with "unconditional positive regard" (that's a concept of person-centered theory). JM is a judge and a whole different person in a whole different profession, PLUS he's a television personality.

Know them better than many out in them, because if they really knew the streets, many wouldn't be doing life on the installment plan in prisons and jails or abusing drugs just to live from day to day. Calling names and calling people out on their behavior are not the same.
Now Wendy Williams made a whole living out of defaming and belittling people and didn't try to differentiate lies from the truth. "JM got mad at Wendy and said mean things about her." Some people get seriously hurt saying the kind of things that Wendy has said about people. IMO, Wendy Williams wasn't the right example to use to prove your point.
