THR was designed to be perfect for home use, and we figured a footswitch and outs weren't necessary for that. But thanks for the feedback - and if you want to gig it stick an SM57 close to the grille in the corner of one of the drivers. Sounds amazing...! Enjoy!
What Phil X said is so true. I grew up a metalhead but I realized the more gain I used, the sloppier my playing had become. I backed off the gain to an almost OD808-like drive and listened to what I'm playing, then I was able to pinpoint and identify the technical mistakes I make. The more gain you pump in, you lose that guitar's tonal characteristics.
I thought this was one of the better Phil X demo's... His assessment of the amp is spot on. He may be a bit hyper, but he is doing what he loves and he is good at it. He also knows his gear, quite well.
I own the THR10.. No speaker outs on the amp. There is a headphone out. These amps are made for travel, or practicing at a bedroom level, and even recording. They come equipped with a USB jack, and I believe they give you Cubase 5AI to go with it. I love these amps. The THRc is more of blues, country, classic rock. I have the THR10 and it has a little more gain. Then theres the THR10X, which is for Metal players. All are good, Hope this helps ya
Phil X...! A Beast of a guitar player..! but more importantly a very cool dude...and listen kids out there...his experience affords him the knowledge to offer concise tips and information on guitar technique and tone...great job Yamaha nice practice amp....
+Mitja Hpčevar yes and so what? That scale is more pleasing to the ear than the ridiculous different modes that some guys play real fast and no melody.
Phil is a beast of a player. His tones are created by his hands. For the most part tone starts in the hands and is enhanced by the rig you run through.
my son bought one and its a fantastic bit of kit. spent most of yesterday playing slide, rock and metal through it. i would have bought the x but this is so good.
Hard to get a good perspective of the amp with this video, no mic on the amp but it's cranked to high heaven. I just bought the amp cause I couldn't afford the THR II 30 watt version. I still need an amp for late night practice. I have been thinking about my guitar with two P90's and Gibson style controls that I don't like. I see the mods here, and it's what I've been thinking about doing myself, it just works better for me. Thanks for helping me make the decision to do away with the complex controls, and go simple. That's why I love my tele. I seem to always make it work without noticing it's shortcomings(so much).
Great amp but all it really needs is is some sort of pedal you could plug in, maybe via the usb port where you could switch between your user memory presets. That would be the icing on the cake
Oh cool, I've never seen this. I just picked up one of these amps & love it. I was actually surprised as to how well it really stands up to the "big boys" when I record. It's cool to see Phil doing a demo of this.
Thanks to your demo Phil I went and bought this amp and It,s the best sounding little amp Ive ever heard , if I could see myself playing this amp from when I first started playing in 1980 Id think wow this is so cool I cant believe it.(yes I would be somewhat emotional, were,s the hanky.LOL.)
I will say that I am with you guys on the concept of this amp. It is about time someone designed an amp specifically for off stage low volume use. I am very happy with the THR10.
Without a foot switch you you just can't go from a clean sounds with effects to a dry overdriven sound in the middle of a song. So, a footswitch is highly desirable at home. The other thing that I miss is having an OD/boost in front of the amp models. It really helps in shaping the sound, especially higher gain amps.
I bought the classic one and i´ve played with this in the streets so now i can answer my own question. Yes, its nice to play with this in the streets! =)
I own 2 THR amps. The thr10c and the reg thr10. I use an a/b switch to change between amps, to act as a foot switch. It's a speedy way of doing things because you need 2 amps... But who doesn't want at least to of these models anyway? ;)
Im still meaning to get around to fitting stereo jacks to mine to plug in a pair of larger speakers. 5 watts per stereo channel would be pretty load through bigger speakers.
Ireally don't need another amp but Damnit Phil made we want this thing! for the price I have to get one I realize it's really just a practice tool but that is what I want it for. I especially like that it can run on batteries, it will be a replacement for my pignose wich at the presant time my camping ampliphier, I take it and my Squir afinity when I hit the woods to party! I had seen this amp a few months back and checked out the reviews, but now hearing Phil play through it, I want one again!
Dammit Yamaha, I want a THR10, but you just HAD to go and make 3 different versions. Stick together the three without the bass/flat/acoustic settings and send it to my house please.
I love the SBG (I think) with the computer fan grill over the neck pickup hole (and toy figure inside waiting to attack?). I'm also a fan of the SC's and SD's. Not a Bon Jovi listiner but he seems like a cool guy and great guitar player.
THR10 or THR10C ... amp colour & price aside, I can't decide. The THR10X isn't for me ... I'm not a high gain metal fan, so it's a toss up between the THR10 or THR10C. I do like what I hear in this demo though :)
so true my big 3 are my silvertone 1481: 12ax7,6v6gt,6x4. my silvertone 1483: 2 12ax7s 2 glg6c a couple odd tubes and my little baby kay 703 which has 12au6 and 50l6 with 35z5 rectifier. by no means a high gain or power amp but beutiful
I think other modelling amps might be in for a fight if yamaha desides to design a new modelling/stage amp. This modelling amp sounds so much better then other 8 inch small combo modelling amps for home use.. Even yamahas older DG amps were not half bad..
Indeed... thats what the TH10RC is good for :) Great review

well.. That sounds awesome ;] But I'm a little worried. As far as small tube amps are concerned - wouldn't they response be better anyway? I was biased towards Vox lil' nighttrain, but after hearing this video I'm seriously confused. For this price tag it's just stunning, and it's like all-in-one rig for practicing in a flat without annoying Your neighbors. The one thing I'm worried about is that THR10C is not as responsive as a true tube. Or the difference is smaller than I think?
Bought my THR10 yesterday. Hands down the best $300.00 I have ever spent. Louder than I expected, nastier than I expected and the reverb resolution is astounding. The only thing I don't understand is, why not outs to the board and foot switch? Cause dang, this could be totally gigable. If you're on the fence, get off and buy it.
Awesome little amp! When will the THR10B "B like in Boutique" with amplifiers as Dumble ODS and SSS, Trainwreck, Friedman, and cabs like old Marshalls with Greebacks 12 etc?, you know what mean! This must be done, and i know Yamaha can do it if they want to!
Not a P-90 pickup fan . But being more into Heavy Metal , Thrash and Shred . They do have a nice 70's April Wine , Journey kinda sound but not for the music I prefer ..
i have one.. get it!!..it's a fantastic product.. and i am picky as hell.. i have a thd amp, 4 x 12 with v30's, fulltone and boss and mxr pedals.. this think does it all .. and you can use batteries . easy to carry around too
do you use a valve poweramp with your THR? Just got mine and it totally rocks, but will need more power soon, so thinking of using it through my 20/20 - should work great
I think a footswitch would have been better as well. yes its for home use but I want to be able to switch channels without using my hands I don't want to run my pedalboard through the thr but I want to be able to boost my sound when needed. especially if it was able to switch preset channels. I think it was a big mistake leaving it out other than that though great amp I love the tones on mine (THR 10C)
If you're truly listening, then I suspect I will be making another purchase in the near future? I will, along with many others, happily do so, if you are listening. ;)
ordered a LP Junior and that amp...good idea? I can still change my mind and as I'm beginner I don't really know yet how to change it ;) (I wanted to spend some more money because I play accoustic guitar and learned by playing that I know that I wanna learn more and won't be bored of it after a year or so...). the sound I want should be a bit of a mix like the sound in the beginning of the vid and the typical les paul sound (I know that this equipment is a too cheap to get such an awesome sound, but is it the right direction or should I send the amp back and get another one?
No,that's a really nice amp for a beginner, specially for practise, it runs with batteries, you can carry it in a small bag & it's decently loud. The best thing is,you can connect it via USB to your computer, download the software with all the tones/effects and start experimenting until you find the tone you like best.

hey man, check out musicstore, they are european but I think they ship to US.
Take a look at the power switch. It is off - 2:12, 3:22, ... Promotional fake video. ;-) But beside this issue all THR amps sound great and dynamic. I have the 10 and the 10X. But I can't imagine how crazy Phil X sounds when the THR is turned to "on".
There are many videos out there on yt. Check them out, although I don't think you'll get a good representation on the sound as there are so many variables in recording. I recommend you go down to your local music shop and try one out. I suspect you'll be very impressed. Just like the add, I do find myself playing much more as it fits in my computer nook with my strat very nicely. :)
Ok Yamaha....since you say you’ve been listening (6 or more years ago!), where’s the footswitch EVERBODY’S been asking for?! And.....why haven’t you put line outs on the things? For gods sake, people have told you REPEATEDLY, that they are gigging these amps. Put out a USB foot switch and/or a dongle to provide line outs and a footswitch jack. We would buy em....period...end of paragraph...full stop!!!!! Seriously....I really have to tell you this?
Would be great to see how it sounds in a home environment. Can give me some light on this. Can you upload a short video? Not that I doubt the promotional videos that make great companies like Yamaha. But this does not seem what is said.
I can understand that. THR10, 10C and 10X are all totally different and cross a lot of lines. They're certainly not pigeon-holed into the 'rock THR' and 'blues THR' boxes that look obvious.
I am very curious if putting my fuzzes/overdrives into this amp would damage it or sound bad? Anyone have experience with this or does YamahaTHR have any input? Thanks!
Pretty sure they edited in footage of the amp with the video if him playing. If the amp closeups were taken while he was playing in real time, you'd see the camera man when they go back to him playing.

Watching all the demos of this amp is totally mind blowing!! And believe me, I own many a classic amps and this lil pup speaks "TONE"!!
Phil X...!
A Beast of a guitar player..! but more importantly a very cool dude...and listen kids out there...his experience affords him the knowledge to offer concise tips and information on guitar technique and tone...great job Yamaha nice practice amp....
He's just playing old licks on old pentatonic.
+Mitja Hpčevar yes and so what? That scale is more pleasing to the ear than the ridiculous different modes that some guys play real fast and no melody.
+Mitja Hpčevar fake acct.
This the first time I see Phil X shows a musical instrument in a mature and not in a histerical matter. I likes it a lot. The demo sold me the amp.
Phil is a beast of a player. His tones are created by his hands. For the most part tone starts in the hands and is enhanced by the rig you run through.

Here you go: thank me later. patchbox68.com/store/en/customers-revue-c84/
Love Phil X... great source of inspiration and entertainment to me... one of a kind
Oh cool, I've never seen this. I just picked up one of these amps & love it. I was actually surprised as to how well it really stands up to the "big boys" when I record. It's cool to see Phil doing a demo of this.
He nailed the THR the most
3:50 in he really nailed that Skid Row 18 & life tone with that THR. That's pretty sweet.
This amp sounds like Jimmy Page on LZI and II, and then a mix of Don Henley's solo career.
I have two of these THR10C for stereo amp setup its super cool.20watts of raw "tube" power,if I need more juice I mic them and straight into PA.
I have a solo 6 classic...only produced one year...best of the best in this axe
God, Phil is incredible in this video, super cool bluesy stuff...

so use a pedal
Phil is is terrific.
No Worries.
Thanks for all the help anyway.
I want At Least Three of the THRs.
Stay Cool !!
I bought the classic one and i´ve played with this in the streets so now i can answer my own question. Yes, its nice to play with this in the streets! =)

i appreciate PhilX doing all this...and also thanks to Yamaha instruments
It seems to me that everything sounds better with p-90 pickups in the guitar.
Those p90s sound more like humbuckers to me... either way, great toanz
We're listening. Honestly...
whatever he plays at 3:48 is amazing.
Im still meaning to get around to fitting stereo jacks to mine to plug in a pair of larger speakers. 5 watts per stereo channel would be pretty load through bigger speakers.
THANK YOU FOR THE CLARITY!!!

Kirby Weldon Well your wish has come true. The new versions can switch between the 3.

Smooth sweet chewy taffy tones.

do the THR amps have a speaker out jack..or can they be plugged into say a hot rod deluxe to increase the volume? nice playing as usual Phil
It's good. Just got the thr 10 x.
it’d be really cool to see what settings are making all these sounds, oh well
Not a P-90 pickup fan . But being more into Heavy Metal , Thrash and Shred . They do have a nice 70's April Wine , Journey kinda sound but not for the music I prefer ..
Phil X brings out best in P90s.
likes low gain, has van halen poster on the background.

i´ve got a thr10 and love it, a foot swicht would be perfect, plz mahe one for the thr
i have a THD univalve amp..but the thr has its own speakers.. i guess plugging it in my amp would work ..
Wy haven´t you done an app for iPhone and iPad for the THR 10

Phil X should surely be using the THR10 X!
Where’s the mic? Is this all over USB audio?? or is there a room mic? I’m kinda skeptical the audio over USB could sound this dynamic

Not that I doubt the promotional videos that make great companies like Yamaha. But this does not seem what is said.
quick question, can you add pedals to it and record using your own effects?, using it as an interface?
When I see this i can not imagine Phil X playing into a Diezel VH-4 or Mesa/Boogie Rectifier....
Sounds really good!
Why does the camera keep having a hard time staying still and in focus... then black and white for no reason.
does this amp respond well with pedals infront of it? ie can i run my pedal board through it for recording?
What settings does he have on mini channels
Yep. It's where that "under the bed" bed is.
One quick question, does it work well with a OD pedal?
Wth what settings r u using
Anyone know how they recorded the amp on this video? Don't see any mics. Maybe DI'ed?
If you search for "Wind Cries Mary - Jimi Hendrix (guitar cover) " you'll see this thing in action on a beach in Hawaii. :)
Is that the mysterious secret PhilX Cave?.???
I can understand that. THR10, 10C and 10X are all totally different and cross a lot of lines. They're certainly not pigeon-holed into the 'rock THR' and 'blues THR' boxes that look obvious.
What's that box thing Phil's got on the red amp?
What's the cameraman\woman doing @6:54? I guess they got bored of guitars and amps.
How do you know which preset he is playing from the THr10C
Got one coming
I am very curious if putting my fuzzes/overdrives into this amp would damage it or sound bad? Anyone have experience with this or does YamahaTHR have any input? Thanks!
Can I use this amp like independent audio interface to play through my Positive Grid BIAS?
+Дмитрий Горбань Yes, you can.
Try the x. It's great.
Pretty sure they edited in footage of the amp with the video if him playing. If the amp closeups were taken while he was playing in real time, you'd see the camera man when they go back to him playing.
what is that spacey/filter effect around 3:00? univibe?
its called flanger
Ummm.... careful with editing, the amp's power switch is in the OFF position @3:19 :)))
Used to have this amp. The inside glows orange too when it's on. Lol
Two pickups Phil???????
This is hardly a review! Phil X could make anything sound incredible!! (No disrespect to Yamaha;-) haha)
