  • NVIDIA Omniverse is one of those things that's tricky to understand, but it might quietly change the way we work. Built on top of Pixar's USD format, the Omniverse Ecosystem enables multiple artists to seamlessly work on 3D projects across applications and game engines. More importantly... it works.

    I have to admit that I'm not totally convinced that this is something I need to use. Most of the problems it would solve can be resolved with proper systems engineering and project management-you never, **ever** want two people working on the same geometry at the same time. Ever. If that happens, you're doing something terribly wrong. Beyond that, all I can really see is a file sharing system, which I already have. To be completely honest with you this sounds like overhyped middleware.

    • @hyperteleXii
      @hyperteleXii 3 года назад +6

      So what you're saying is, this product is an antidote to poor systems engineering and project management. Now if you consider the salaries of great engineers and managers, this product might provide insane value to a media company. It's basically a robot manager. Allowing multiple people working on the same geometry sounds like a killer feature, increasing efficiency and parallelism in production process.

Honestly don't see the point when we already have everything we need to stay organized, this will just make your work worse if you use it as intended, and it serves nothing else.

      pretty much what I thought as well. Even with isolated scenes it happens that two artists work on the same thing thanks to missed communication.
      Also Im not sure how version history would work in this. What if an artist isnt sure its a good time to commit changes because it breaks alot of stuff until he/she is done? Is the artist supposed to 100% his work every time with no saves or version to fall back to? Sounds like a nightmare. Something like Perforce allows us to save several versions of the same file which helps in not only trouble shooting but also keep things clean.

    It should be mentioned that there's nothing in Omniverse that is NVIDIA specific - perhapse except the marbles thing and the RTX renderer.
    Nucleus and the whole server framework and the apps, is all just a UDS sync framework - nothing to do with rendering at all. And the Create app has a USD Hydra viewport, they just implemented a delegate for it that is raytraced. But you can hook any other Hydra delegate for any renderer out there (of which there are now plenty).
    Even the RTX stuff is probably just implemented with DXR on windows, so should work with any hardware that supports it.

  • @willnationsdev
    @willnationsdev 3 года назад +15

    Can you confirm my understanding/answer some questions? I'm a programmer, but not very familiar with modeling/animation file formats yet.
    USD is an open file format with a high level of detail that allows for perfectly recreating all aspects of the file data across a wide range of asset creation applications. Omniverse is a hosting-and-sharing system for USD assets as well as a kind of lightweight "app store" for apps that interact with USD data (even if they are free/embedded, e.g. "Create"). And the thing that makes Omniverse "Omniverse" is the fact that each connected client to the system can sync their data with other devices in the network in real-time, provided a "connector" integration is written for Omniverse. Is this correct?
    1. Is there any sort of "authoritative" server? Seems like no.
    2. I assume it isn't possible to "lock" files to prevent simultaneous editing in cases where it isn't desired. Do you know if this is a planned feature?
    3. If two people make edits to the same file and *then* turn on live syncing, how are merge conflicts resolved? Is it just "you must discard your changes"? Or does the last person to sync automatically overwrite everyone else's version? Is there any kind of "diffing" detection? How does it work?
    4. Is there version tracking / history preservation / reversion support? I'm guessing no.
    5. What defines a "connector"? Is it just import/export support for the USD file format and the ability to live-sync with the Omniverse network? Anything else?
    6. If "connectors" aren't more complicated than 5, what makes Omniverse any different from me hosting an OwnCloud, putting a USD file in it, and then working with the USD file in any given app that implements import/export support for USD? There's still "live-syncing" involved. Is there any unique proprietary technology at play with Omniverse, or is it just a proprietary merging and branding of open technologies?
    7. If there isn't any proprietary tech involved here, what potential do you see in a FOSS alternative existing for Omniverse in the future?
    Also, +1 for Godot integration. More Godot integrations with proprietary tech means better chance of adoption in higher-profile studios and stronger overall support in the industry.

    One of the features I found REALLY awesome was when working with Omniverse and an imported scene that is being Live Updated all your transforms are "recorded" in the hierarchy. So you basically move an object say "50 units" in the Y direction and Omniverse adds a (node?) to the hierarchy with that change and then you can delete specific transforms within or all of them and start over. There's an endless amount of possibility within the program. I haven't tested over Network with another person but I DID hook up 2 of my PCs and then messed about with it on my home network with 1 of the machines connected over WiFi and my main machine hooked directly into the Router / Modem. So now getting people to collaberate seems too easy and the barriers are almost non-existent (minus any hardware for performance reasons). The Ray-Traced versus Path-Traced is also just a Real Time versus non-Real Time Renderer which makes it easier on machines that don't necessarily need the beauty shot but need to make changes. The amount of AWESOME this delivers blew me away and I feel, for me personaly, I've barely scratched the surface as to what it can do. The real question I suppose is what do I need it for and can it meet those requirements? The answer right now is yes. Cheers for covering this! Oh, 1 last thing; my understanding is ( Blender for example ) that if a program has a USD Importer / Exporter there will be a link developed for it at some point. Can't wait to force my buddy who hates having multiple different links to work together use this as this solves a LOT of issues. Cheers! Stay Healthy and Stay Sane!

      Im calling it- this is gonna fail hard.
      Theres no way this bloated proprietary format/interface will keep up with the coming features and requirements of the people who actually develop content.
      It may be used in niche cases within AAA studios but even then a replacement is gonna be necessary. Closed ecosystems breed a flimsy representation in actual function and userbase, which could really swiftly be taken upon specific solutions for specific workflows, excluding the ridiculous hardware locking.

    • @jazzlehazzle
      @jazzlehazzle Год назад

      @@tobymdev Well the entire point is that it uses USD which is about as non-proprietary as you can get; so the thing that becomes proprietary is CUDA taking over the world's pipelines... which it somewhat already has, and I admit I converted to it from my beloved Radeon, just for the sake of being able to aggregate live-linked models from countless apps and have them all update in real-time when changed. That's especially huge for ArchViz & Sims, and even to some extent for game dev., bc via the Omni pipe to UE, it no longer matters what modeling apps a teammate is fluent in or not. All connected apps "just work." I really wish someone would come up with a plain USD aggregator pipe, that doesn't even need to render, so that every app could be live-linked to UE or Unity but remain hardware agnostic. Then Omni would definitely fail. But for now... it's dope.

      Unity are... well they went public and their valuation might be a tad on the high side compared to their product portfolio. So they are trying to get into as many revenue streams as possible. Plus Unreal are firing on all cylinders.
      Facebook is... well, I think the biggest fear there is the government getting involved, which I think increasingly will happen. Despite unity support Nvidia material language, if unity support microgeomtery mapping it would be superior to ue5 , they have their own path tracer & scriptable rendering pipelines, but that's only for baked GI. maybe some savvy developer will be able to show how much of quality unity have ( I still prefer Adam demo over Nanite) due to the texture quality but I hope they remaster it and continue developing their technology

      @@CaScho1975 tbh , it doesn't matter much but the future support point is the thing I'm concerned about, unity already have Octane renderer for free ,as long as you don't use server farms Which probably won't use if you're independent virtual cinematographer . the future support of third party apps and online services & tutorials probably willuse unreal anyway,
      I think some compositing shots by great movie like the oasis ready player one was done by unity and exported to other DCC tools like blender,
      Octane is developing other renderer for anime as well and real time path tracer. that being said it doesn't matter that much unity have AI powered textures and material authoring tool and support material authoring language I except it's going to be added to bridge the gap but it doesn't matter if not.

    I don't see it handling unreal engine 5 meshes very well in the Omniverse editor as it would need to use Nanite. Also if you export Nanite assets into Maya it would just crash as Maya is bad at handling as many triangles. You can already use Unreal Engine collaboration with someone with the help of a VPN and work on the same scene (even if its a little buggy). It will be interesting to see what it has to offer.

    However, this isn't software for a professional Musician who needs a good DAW.
    The naming system with add-ons is kinda a huge mess to tell what DLC works with what else.

    Nvidia acquire a path tracing renderer ( idk the name) but the next powerful yet faster GPU accelerated renderer would be Octane. octane actually is already out as middleware renderer for both unity and unreal the potential and application of theses type of renderers are real time path tracing ( in game screenshot) or as demo of future games ( use path tracing with up sampling techniques) but that's would be very expensive even for rtx 3090 . Thus probably something like cloud computing ( 5G,edge computing) would open many new application for gaming and entertainment ( require fast internet connection) and that's a business model for Nvidia and cloud computing providers . and yes think of virtual cinematography modern game engines sponsor
    something like mp5 vr videos format for RUclips or whatever new platform . simulation and many other applications even for cloud gaming ( get ultra realistic graphic option only in the cloud)
    I hate this but I hope it goes well for consumer.
    additionally the competition of Octane/Nvidia farming servers I think they pretty much similar but Nvidia has its own material authoring language they could interduce new AI future that is only available using their renderer ? or maybe not.. I hope it doesn't go wrong by greedy cloud companies outta there.. in realm of get better service with subscription tiers.

      But this would not be a revolution in animation too? I've heard animations take too long to render with ray traced. And that a frame can take hours to render, so a short 2-minute movie would take weeks to complete. If they animators use Omniverse with Real Time Ray Tracing, they could complete animations and upload in internet in seconds with a home computer, and they wouldn't use render farms.
      The cinematic animations would render slowly, at 5FPS or 40FPS like Marbles Demo as we can see in 11:47, but when finished rendering, they would be offline animations like any video or movie and will be played at 60FPS. So Ray Tracing would have a potential use in animations better than in games.

  • @NuronAtren
    @NuronAtren 3 года назад

    I do think Lumen will be better than Ray Traced. Running the marbles demo at 40+ FPS doesn't seem viable with many lighting artifacts. RTX is now depreciated in UE5. For PhysX application and AI I could see Omniverse being useful as well as for developers using Unity/Non-UE Game engines.

    What is the point? Like maybe I could understand if you were actively collaborating freely with a few artists, but in a professional environment this is absolutely stupid, nobody can nor will work collaboratively at the same time on the same thing, especially when they always need to discuss things before they do something that requires multiple people's inputs. And with level design or other game design subjects, that's even worse because there is way more risk of anyone failing to get what they want across if they use this as its intended. It really seems like a solution to a problem nobody had which it fixes by making the problem it made up worse. Who needs to collaborate on a specific file in parallel outside of maybe a learning environment? (which is still useless without directly addressing the individual verbally)
