- Dungeons and Dragons? DnD? D&D? D or D? Have you played it? (I haven't) But I've played similar Pencil and Paper Role-Playing games (RPGs). This is Goblin Slayer Explained as a Role-Playing game! In the manga at least. The cleric girl turns in her guild application and the paper she turns in is a D&D character Sheet. I thought it was cool.
That is really cool. Those little details are a nice touch.
@@KBWanime you see it a little in the anime but the manga also touched on the gods “rolling for fate” and it’s very clearly a DnD setup. The big destined heroes of the world that have their direct attention: Goblin Slayer is an NPC and not one of them. He is “refusing to let the dice be rolled”. We actually Biggs the thoughts of the greater gods in the original novel: Priestess was supposed to have the same end as the rest of her first party and then along came this guy changing the outcome.
That is pretty cool. Maybe we'll get more in the anime in season 2. It's such a cool concept

Watching this made me think that someone literally pitched their D&D campaign as a show and it turned into a fire show that everyone loved
It really seems that way! The author was definitely inspired by it if nothing else.
If you've ever seen Overlord, that's what happened with that story. His friends didn't have time to play his game so he turned it into a book.

It's actually a very common thing in Japan, in fact one of the precursors of heroic fantasy over there; The Records of Lodoss, is one such things. This concept is known as "replays" there and is essentially the people involved in the campaign rewriting what went down in a novel format. Eventually adapted into manga, anime, games and so on depending on how popular they get.
I do believe the original intention was that the “main” characters we see in the show aren’t the main characters of the D&D Campaign hosted by the GM(Green Moon). The party of heroes on their quest to slay the demon king (or whatever) is only introduced as an off-screen mention.
Therefor, everyone we meet in the show and manga are literally the NPCs living in the consequence of a world created not for them but for someone else’s story.
That does make sense and that's definitely part of the inspiration, like what if we focused on the random side characters in the epic high fantasy. Although I wouldn't say they are NPCs because I don't think goblin slayers world is literally a game. It's more like those Isekai worlds that just happen to have RPG elements.

I love the idea that GS was come up with on the fly and was such a hit with the rest of the group that he changed the whole story to be a goblin focus party

My GM LOVES overly large and complicated dungeons so I've had my fair share of them XD
This was a lot of fun, but I wish you would have made a second part. There's so many good instances in this anime, especially for the season finale, where it genuinely sounds like DM and player logic clashing as the dice get rolled.

I think the funny part is in the Light Novels the Four-Cornered World is actually a game to the gods. They literally sit around with maps and roll dice for what happens to the adventurers they're watching. The God Truth loves setting up TPK situations, especially for Heroines chosen by the Goddess Illusion, who has fumbled many rolls and ended up with many dead heroines.
They've alluded to it in the anime, but not that much detail. That's great! XD
Also since GS is so cautious he is somewhat immune to the god's rolls. (He has some backstoey with that)

Well of course it was a DnD game. Priestess talks about says she has a limited number of spells per day and gives an actual number. Only games do that.

Thanks! Anime in general takes a lot from DnD and just any kind of roleplaying game.
I mean actually Goblin Slayer started as a 2chan greentext story by a guy who really likes playing tabletop RPGs, vaguely based on his experiences in tabletop rpgs as a whole, and while dnd was no doubt one of them, it was but *one* of them. The main inspiration was a game he played where players where obsessed with one NPC, who obviously later became "the goblin slayer" we all know. The official Goblin Slayer TRPG is a very heavily modified version of Sword World but y'know.
I was convinced this anime is D&D after watching an abridged series and hearing all the D&D jokes

Actually, Goblin Slayer is based off of a game called Sword World. It's actually a novelization based on the author's Sword World Campaign where Goblin Slayer was an NPC everyone really liked.
I think this made me want to try this D&D thing!!

I played like 3 months ago and wow this is a amazing game and depending on the dm the game can be super unforgiving or turn into a power house
Great video! My memory of this anime's not so clear but I remember there were scenes of gods and the rolling of dice a lot as well. There was a post I read online too that whenever Goblin Slayer's eye glows, that's him rolling a Nat 1, which means he's supposed to fail at a check, attack roll, and/or save, but he still manages to push through it and succeed - which angered the gods (or the DM hahahah). I'm curious to know what you think about those instances!
That's really cool! I never picked up on that but I see it thinking back those scenes. I like that idea thematically. It's like Goblin Slayer didn't like what the gods rolled for him so he rolled it himself just from a strong will.
I thought that was his rage mode, my barbarians usually bulk up and eyes turn red lol. He is completely covered in armor so glowing red eyes for rage.
He seems more like a Ranger. The class grants him proficiency in simple and martial weapons. As well as shields, and up to medium armor. In the anime, we see him with great survival skills as well as tracking abilities. Most important of all, he's got the Favored Enemy class feature that Rangers get at level 1. Goblin Slayer is a Ranger.
@@talesoftarin yeah if i was creating a character base on D&D i would consider him a ranger type class as his primary class as well cause of the reason you stated. he also have some thief skills. In the light novel he shown to have some ability to do unlock traps as well he can create traps. Elves girl is also a ranger class but she more of the standard variety..

Funny thing is in the manga it was kinda mentioned that Goblin Slayer and anyone around him can not be influenced by the dice roll.
I think it's Goblin Slayer's pure will to be able to fight against what is fated for him. Similar to Guts in Berserk.

I love this, amazing video. This is perfect D&D entertainment for me who just got into it a few months ago, rewatched Goblin Slayer (and can now appreciate it even more for how close it sticks to D&D), and am now anxiously waiting for my next session, and in dire need for more content to fill the D&D shaped void in my heart.

When I first watched the first season in one sitting I noticed the similarity too and I started finding stuff that would definietly have happened on a crit fail or nat20. It's just fun. Like the part where the ogre tries hitting elf lady could have been one roll away from the AC and a knockback effect. which she got a good acrobatics save for to stick the landing, probbaly a crit because backflips are fun
Exactly. Although the overall story is like a ttrpg, it's really the small details that made me think of this. The combat feels like it's happening in turns, the ways they check for traps, and when they count their remaining spells, there is a ton of little details and it makes the show a lot more enjoyable for me.
@@KBWanime spell count is an interesting world building detail. you start out with only able to cast one or two spell a day. which means for caster of all type they are pretty much useless for most of the adventure. Which is why cleric girl learn to sling stone as she level up she able to cast more spell and more variety of spells but early on she just dead weight. Same for wizard girl.
Pretty much how these games work. Spell casters are much weaker than everyone at level 1 and the most powerful at higher levels.

Goblin slayer is based off a legit campaign but Goblin slayer was just a side character, the actual players are the heros who face the demon lord

Also there is a goblin slayer trpg that just came out. I've been told that it's like a simplified version of sword world. And since we don't have an official version of sword world in the US that is a pretty cool thing for a weeaboo like me
I'm not sure if there is any information about what the campaign the author based the story off of or if it was just inspired in general by DnD. Nothing I could find at least. Being Japanese, it makes it more difficult to research, though.

Yes there will be. I am currently working on covering the movie and then I'll do season 2 once it's finished if that video does well.

It's honestly refreshing to see a trpg setting where the bad guys are something other than undead or demons.
It really plays on that trope as well, because no one really takes Goblin Slayer seriously, despite goblins being massive threats.

No. It's FIRST EDITION D&D where the DM plays the monsters are legit trying to win and playing any dirty trick they have to, and "reality ensues" isn't an exception, it's the RULE for this world of magic and monsters... If you bring along a sword Cloud Strife would be proud of into a confined space, you will die.
well yes goblin slayer is literally a d&d game played by the gods of that world using people and monsters as pawns cause theyre bored.
but unlike a d&d game irl theres no defined end goal so the game goes on forever.
goblin slayer himself tho is somewhat out of the loop of the game and disrupts its flow multiple times with his actions.

The Author spoken of how he loved to sit with friends and play D&D.
The whole set up is meant to be "Gods" (players) rolling dice with their characters (the ones in the anime) which are no different to NPCs. Except with Goblin Slayer, who supposedly is a NPC that refuses to be played with dice and acts autonomously, messing up the "Gods" play.
If you ask me, Goblin Slayer is controlled by the DM as a plot tool.
Also: Overlord. Literally about a salaryman in a dystopian future Japan whose friends quit the game and he stays stuck in the fantasy world that has become reality, authored by a guy who missed playing D&D with his friends as they moved on with life.
That's definitely the idea of it. I don't think of Goblin Slayer as literally a DnD game though. I think it's more like a fantasy world with DnD elements. Similarly to how many iseaki have game elements, but they aren't actually games
And Overlord is definitely the same idea just with mmo.
@@KBWanime I heard the manga literally goes into details like how the saintess go fked up over by goblins because her "Goddess" player messed up a roll and got a critical failure (roll of 1 of a 20-sided die).
And so forth.

One point of contention: Goblin Slayer is explicitly the one person in that world not controlled by players or the dm
My idea behind this was that John was the experienced player so unlike the others who had their stats and rolls figured out by the dm, he "rolled his own die"
1:00 [snort] more like average difficulty. The goblins in Goblin Slayer are played more like how lore accurate goblins in DnD should be played. They're only trash mobs because they're treated as such. The CR ratings are well known to be lies. Kobolds basically are level scaling goblins, even get a dragon boss at higher levels given how kobolds get stronger when serving a dragon.
I've never actually played DnD so I really don't know the specifics of the rules XD

@@KBWanime It's a Japanese RPG based on the D&D basic/expert set, but changed to use 2d6 instead of d20. I believe it got popular over there because other types of dice were hard to get.

Its D&D but not 5E, much less Crítical Role. Here there are no infinite damaging cantrips, goblins are Evil, not misunderstood Monsters, death and danger is real and there is no SJW,s and non binary Uber characters all around.
Go to OSR games or AD&D if hoy want to play this flavour of D&D instead of playing 5E, more suitable for Teen Titans Go or Young Mutants and Dragones LOL.
In my idea of the game, it's using mechanics, but it's the GM's world. One of the best things about RPGs is the GM decides what he does and doesn't want in the game and can tailor it to the players. Ironically enough, I've never actually played D&D. XD
