@@dodgevipergtssnake5309 Great question! 👍 It depends what you are looking for in an area. Scottsdale housing is more expensive than Phoenix, but has a lot of high end shopping, dining, walkable areas, and lots to see and do and is a hotspot for visitors and tourists. Phoenix housing is more affordable than Scottsdale and has lots of great dining, activities, downtown area and lots to offer too. It will depend on what you are looking for and what lifestyle suites you best. I have lived in Phoenix and Scottsdale both for years and my personal preference is Scottsdale. 😊

@Brian Wood There are many pockets where you can still find elements of older "Phoenix". It is in pockets of communities created by the people of Phoenix, not the developers. The traffic is much worse, but there are freeways EVERYWHERE, which helps get evertone around. I would say the biggest thing I miss is how the monsoon storms can't sweep across the Valley like they used to, just watch the radar this summer! Watch the storms build up along the Mogollon Rim and drop down and often times you see the storms almost hit a hidden wall and divert around the metro area. It is so sad. :(

Great question! It really depends on your lifestyle and what you mean by "live comfortably" since people have different priorities and definitions for that. But in order to rent a nice place, pay utilities, and be able to shop and go out a couple times a week you'd probably want to be making 75k or more in Scottsdale. But I know many people who live well there on less and those who need more. 😁
It's such a great place and has lots of offer, but it is one of the most expensive cities to live in here in AZ so take that into account. Here is a cool tool that might be helpful as well 😊 www.payscale.com/cost-of-living-calculator/Arizona-Scottsdale

In summer if you want to do hiking or do things outside you just do them earlier in the day before the worst of the heat or after the sun goes down. @@LIVING_IN_ARIZONA ITA. My husband and I moved to Scottsdale from the NE about two years ago, and in our experience, it is just much more laidback vibe here. You don't need to dress up as much to go out to dinner. Because of the weather (most of the year), it's a much more outdoors scene, so people will go for a short hike or a quick round of golf and then meet up for brunch or coffee (outdoor seating). In the summer, when it does get very hot, people do hang out by the pool or they go to the mall (the huge indoor mall is still a thriving thing here, as is the gorgeous outdoor/indoor mall type, which is not quite as nice in the heat of summer). There is also the option of spending time at the boardwalk, which houses the aquarium (one of our favorite places to spend a summer's day) and the butterfly experience, along with several shops.

We live in CT and are interested in moving over there. With the Fed still very early in its unprecedented hike cycle and a recession looming as a result, we are waiting for a meaningful correction in Scottsdale home prices. I suspect Scottsdale is a “high beta” market, so when a down cycle happens in the U.S., it will be down much more than the national average.
Having said that, Scottsdale should do quite well longer term, as the economy of Phoenix and AZ continues to out-grow by attracting companies and jobs, and people as a result.

If you're a person of color with a strong cultural identity, Scottsdale might not be as attractive. I've been in Phoenix since 97. Both my wife and I earn a very respectable income and could certainly afford to buy a home and live in Scottsdale but never would even consider it. The cultural isolation would be too much to bear.

Moving here from LA, I'm disappointed in the restaurant scene. In LA, there is literally every kind of world cuisine and chefs. Is there a sichuan restaurant in Scottsdale? Not that I've found. An Evan Funke and decent cacio e pepe? Please. A good Jewish deli? Oi vay! Lots of bad sushi bars that cater to people who have never eaten at a great one. Even the Mexican restaurants in LA are better than the ones here. This place is all about overpriced steakhouses, gastropubs, chain restaurants, fast food, and Chicago junk food. You will love living here if (1) you are not a foodie, (2) you love golf and sports cars, (3) you're over 70 and retired, (4) you're from Minnesota, Chicago, Canada, and Michigan (you will fit right in with all the transplants from up north), (5) you don't have a dog (the few dog parks suck and half the year you can't walk them outside during the day because of the heat), (6) you hate grass, and (7) you don't care about residential architecture and don't mind living in a tile roofed stucco home with a zero lot line that looks like every other home in every neighborhood (unless you can buy a $1.7m home). But on the plus side, there are no homeless people except for one guy at the corner of Scottsdale Rd and Mayo Dr. And there's AJ's.

I don't live in the USA but I'm very interested in the differences in city lay-outs, zoning, and modes of transport.
Just happened to watch this video: *Suburbs That DO Suck: Scottsdale, Arizona*
If you like car centric cities that don't tax suburban neighborhoods for the actual cost of constructing all that infrastructure (roads, water, sewage, power) then this sounds like the city for you.
Mind: once the city stops growing, it won't be able to afford to maintain all those suburban neighborhoods but that probably will only happen in a few decades so no worries.
I live in a small Dutch town, close to a bigger city. I can walk every day to my local supermarket, just a 13 minute walk to the store and back again.
Saves me to pay for fuel for a car and also gives me a bit of exercise every day. Because I don't like to store up on goods for the entire week.
And whenever I feel like visiting Utrecht, I walk to the bus stop, which is 8 minutes away and wait for the next bus, which leaves every 15 or 20 minutes.
Or I can walk a bit further, 13 minutes, to the train station and get the train which leaves every 30 minutes.
Both bus and train will deliver me to Utrecht city center in around 15 minutes (bus) or 8 minutes (train).

    • @LIVING_IN_ARIZONA
      @LIVING_IN_ARIZONA  Год назад +3

Yeah love cities that are walkable and allow you to be able to get out and enjoy the city without needing a car to get around. One reason I love Old Town Scottsdale is because it has that walkable aspect to it! 😍 Unfortunately most of the other parts of Phoenix and the cities around it are very spread out and having a car to get around is best since the public transportation isn’t the most efficient here.
Definitely a lot of pros and cons when it comes to Scottsdale and all it has to offer. Would love to live in a city someday that is similar to the Dutch town you live in since it sounds wonderful and I would love to be able to walk whenever I need to go without needing a car. If you ever get a chance to visit Phoenix or Scottsdale or any other city in Arizona in person let me know what you think! 😄

@@LIVING_IN_ARIZONA Thank you for replying. I visited Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 2005. Almost twenty years ago but I can still remember most of it.
Things in The Netherlands weren't always as I described them. Only in the 1990s did everything started to change in favor of bike-ability and walk ability.
In the 1980s everyone thougth that those small shopping centers that each neighborhood still has, were going to die out because everyone would take their car to go shop in the city.
Fortunately that didn't happen. And if we wish to purchase big things we can still go to the city by car, bus or train.
I hope that things will also change in the USA because in the end, everyone will benefit from having more alternative options to travel than just the car. Those that have no other option than to drive, will find the streets and roads will be much less congested for one thing.

Haha thanks for not thinking I talk too fast lol! I'll try to slow down in the new videos. 😂

There are some more remote and rural areas in the state that are experiencing difficulties with water levels. Thankfully the state is working on several water conservation and recycling solutions to be able to provide plenty of water in the main cities and metros. What part of Arizona do you live in? 🙂

Haha sorry, I do talk a little fast when I'm excited about sharing info on cities around the area. 😂 Feel free to slow down the video if that helps.
