UPDATE: Someone on my Discord shared a speedrunning video "Donkey Kong 64 Any% Speedrun in 24:39" by signakong. The answer is pretty simple! The game is only looking for boss key #3 and #8, so just glitch through walls to the boss fight as mentioned in this video. As for what happens in the K Rool fight, the game still has you playing through all 5 Kong rounds, with full abilities, as if the player already unlocked everything! [Previous comment: I did my best to research this topic! It's a big theory, so feel free to share your theories! ✌️]
Hehe well, you mentioned you weren't sure what happens if you switch to a Kong in the Kardboard Kuttout fight, but it's pretty well known that speedrunners use that to unlock certain Kongs "early" as if you merely play as the kong then exit the fight, then jump in the tag barrel as that Kong, they count as unlocked. This boss and the final one force you to play as the kongs whether you unlocked them or not, however it does not give you the respective moves for them (unless you do a menu glitch with banana fairies and the Rambi rumble minigame to pre-unlock most moves regardless of if you have the kong or not). So technically the answer is "no". Also you don't need all 8 keys to unlock Klumsy's door as the game assumes you got previous keys if you turn in later ones, so the game only checks if you need Key 3 and 8 as 3 is the only key that does not unlock another stage since you unlock Frantic Factory and Gloomy Galleon at the same time and thus FF's key does nothing. That's kind of fortunate because Dragodon 2 is technically impossible with DK without the Angry Aztec Glitch, but realistically you just need to beat FF and Hideout Helm and get all the moves using the Rambi arena menu glitch and you can do it....with the respective kongs during the K Rool Fight. Personally I'm more interested in seeing how much you can achieve with DK alone. How high of a percentage. Max% DK only would make for a really interesting follow up video. Especially factoring in the glitches to get to areas designed for other Kongs to get generic items like Battle Crowns and Banana fairies.
@@MarioMastar I didn't know that about unlocking Kongs with Kut Out, that's pretty awesome! Someone in my Discord just shared a speedrunner doing exactly what you've typed here. Now I have my answer! I'm in the same boat, I would love to know how much DK can achieve going solo.
There's also another thing that you have to do before entering krool is getting the moves necessary to beat the game, Main Menu Moves MMM for short let's you have the moves without buying them and free the kongs to buy the moves.
I heard in another video recently that the Kong faces in K.Rool's throne room are tied to the final boss battle phases, and if you modify the game (e.g. via a randomizer) to remove any of them, then that corresponding Kong's boss phase is skipped. I don't know if there's a way to achieve that in game, but it could be possible!!
I know I saw a Randomizer where someone was able to skip 3 of the kongs in the final but wasn't sure the details, only that it correlated with the barrels in the K. Rool hideout, perhaps there is hope to manage it all the way through but just Donkey Kong
King Kut-Out is actually an interesting factor in this challenge depending on rulings. All Kongs will be in the barrel for this fight whether they were unlocked or not. If you switch to playing as a Kong and 'exit to level' through the menu, it actually unlocks the Kong outside the fight, as well. You can unlock all Kongs this way without rescuing them from their cages.
@superjoebros64 since you loved my comment you should try that. See how far you can get without Tiny since she doesn't unlock a kong nor is her boss key required to continue past world 4.
Thank you for Spamming Videos lately, im watching every single one of them because i love DK64 and it makes me smile seeing other people care for this game too. Keep it up i really appreciate your work. Greeting from germany.
As someone who attempted a 0% run, and an any% dk run years ago it was a really fun challenge. The 0% was more of learning how to get into each world, or accessing levels way earlier with moon kicks, i ended up getting lanky to really help access worlds portals. for DK that was an experience. madjack is actually very easy if you pan the camera out and make the game lag giving him double the jump coverage. My hardest thing i did with DK was moon kicking up dk isle to reach fungi forest early, that one took days of failures to get lol. for the tag barrel in cutout if you lose donkey whatever kong you win (or leave with) youll just unlock them immediately if i recall. I super appreciate your dk December, and hope my comments can boost algorithms for it.
for k.rools fight it'll have all the Kongs available regardless, however they will have none of their upgrades they'd need to face him. the 8th key can be abit harder for dk to get than diddy since his backflip isnt that high on the ledge diddy can easily fall through to get. you can still just use a different wall though. if you had to start off with any of the other kongs instead of dk this challenge would be nearly impossible (except maybe diddy) since they mostly all lack the movement abilities dk has not even including the moonkick.
I just saw a speedrun where they entered the KRool fight with just DK, and all of the Kong abilities were unlocked. But maybe it comes down to what glitches were used? Not sure! Very interesting! Glad you're enjoying DK Dec! I'm enjoying your thoughtful comments!
@@superjoebros64 ooh possibly, the thing i can think of is the intro story glitch paired with the multiplayer glitch. the multiplayer auto unlocks everything for you and if you perform the glitch right itll transfer over everything to your playthrough. I could be missing some info though.
I love glitching into boss fights with the wrong Kongs. Chunky was the only other character I could beat Mad Jack with. It was also funny to use Chunky in Pufftoss. Because he uses his mine-cart animation in the boat and it looks hilarious because he’s too big for it and he’s holding onto nothing. 😂 I remember hoping the barrel in the 2nd Dogadon fight would change to whatever kong you were playing as. Being able to fly around the arena with Diddy would have been fun.
I believe only key 3 and 8 are needed to complete the game. The specific trigger for opening K. Lumsys cage only tests for those two keys as in normal progression, every other key is needed to even reach Hideout Helm. Other boss fights can be skipped unless you need to open a specific lobby to progress. Other than that - What is the plan for completing Hideout Helm with only Donkey Kong? Is there a glitch to skip disabling the Blast-o-Matic? Or is there a way to enter the various Kong rooms and play the minigames with DK?
@@RaffoPhantom Yes - but my question was more if you still need to shut off the Blast-O-Matic in some way. If you do, then that is another obstacle for a DK only run.
@@simonnielsen5565 I don't think so because Any% speedruns don't bother to shut it down, I think they just get the key and then restart the game. The time limit causes an insta game over if the time runs out while in the level, but once you get the key, you don't need to do the level anymore as the flag is checked. Upon restart, the Krool boss fight will be in the proper location.
You are totally correct! The game is just looking for key 3 and 8. As for Hideout Helm, I don't remember entirely, there might be a glitch to bypass the countdown clock. I could be wrong. But as RaffoPhantom mentioned, speedrunners tend to just glitch through walls and snag that last key pretty quickly haha
The current speed run route basically already does this, though it is impossible to finish the final boss without switching; not only because of mechanics, but because the kongs are automatically swapped when the phases change.
Not so much a glitch but a trick was found a few years ago that lowers how many GBs you need for each world. By pressing Up, Down, Left, Right on the D-Pad in front of B. Locker with certain Kongs for specific levels. Angry Aztec - Diddy Frantic Factory - Tiny Gloomy Galleon - Lanky Fungi Forest - Chunky Crystal Caves - Donkey Creepy Castle - Lanky Hideout Helm - Chunky

If it's the video I'm thinking of, that would be the collab video that Jiggylookback and I recently did! I talked about that exact moment in K.Rool's throne. A very interesting find.
How funny. I’ve been trying this on emulator with just DK…. I got to Tiny’s boss, & got killed….. so I tried Chunky’s boss…. Got creamed, but I did beat DK’s Diddy’s & Lanky’s bosses no issues
Finally, I’m off work the next few nights so I can catch up on your videos sooner rather than waiting until the middle of the night. So this is an interesting topic that I’ve actually attempted a couple years ago. Obviously, the final boss fight is super tricky as you already mentioned. I don’t know personally if the other Kongs would just be magically brought in or whatever. That’s the only part of the game I haven’t tested. Everything else as far as getting the eight boss keys. I’ve actually done that myself. Thanks to the clipping through walls and stuff like that. Also, I’ve actually done mad Jack with DK. The lag of the original game helps him get over the platforms with his B attack when he kicks into the air. It’s really hard to do but I’ve definitely done it. Even though this is more of a theory video it’s so much fun to talk about. Seeing as how broken this game is.
They don't "Unlock" the Kongs but you can play as them temporarily. If you jump into a tag barrel as the kong though, they will be unlocked permanently, as if you rescued them. This is done in various speed runs, but you are forced to play as the kong regardless of if you unlocked them, because the game sets your Kong to the appropriate one for these fights due to the tag barrel being inactive. Unlike the other boss fights where it simply keeps using the Kong you were already playing as.
@ thanks for clearing up that. I didn’t know what happened since I’ve never experienced it before. I thought I made that clear in my comment that I didn’t do it, maybe I didn’t say it. Anyway thanks for clearing that up. I appreciate it.
That's really cool that you've attempted this yourself! I kind of want to try it some day. There's so many layers to this busted game haha. It sounds like the K Rool fight will provide the player all Kongs and abilities, as if you play through the game normally. Not too bad overall.
Great video. Dont know what to say about it lol but i met ivan moody tonight. He lives in my home town. Im not a huge fan of ffdp but he was really nice! Also its my birthday!
Is it possible? No. I've actually seen a few glitch videos that prove everything up to the K. Rool fight is possible. As stated, its pretty easy to get past B. Locker even with DK, and you can glitch into and beat every boss except King Kut-Out and K. Rool. But you really don't need to. The keys from Frantic Factory and Hideout Helm are the only ones you actually need with glitches. Glitch into Frantic Factory and beat Mad Jack, then glitch into Hideout Helm and get the coins to get the key (from what I can find, Diddy can glitch past the door to get the key without the coins, but for DK only, you seem to need both coins). Once you do that and bring thoee keys to K. Lumsy, the King Kruiser II will have crashed and you can glitch inside to the final boss fight. So you don't even need to face King Kut-Out. But I believe that's it. You can't fight K. Rool with just DK. In fact, I believe the game crashes even entering the final boss fight without unlocking the other Kongs. I believe I saw a minimal barrel swap, 101% run that showed that the game crashes there, but fighting King Kut-Out will automatically unlock any missing Kongs. I would have to find the video again to double check, I might be misremembering both instances. But the fact remains that you can't do all of the K. Rool sections with just DK. You're automatically swapped to the next Kong for the next round. I don't think there's even a (known) glitch to skip the fight. So you'll start the fight as DK, best round one, then the run ends. You can fight every boss as DK, getting every key, or even use glitches to skip everything but Mad Jack and the 8th key. Its not necessarily easy, but its certainly possible. But that's it. No matter how you get there, you cannot beat K. Rool with just DK.
you nailed it! Check my pinned comment. Someone did a speedrun doing just about all this, and started the K Rool fight with only DK. The game just continues as if the player unlocked every Kong and ability. So, this video wasn't too far off!
I am very interested to see if Donkey Kong can actually solo K. Rool in this game. I just find it funny that Donkey Kong could just lets the other Kongs sit trapped in their cells so he can get all the glory! 😅
