The nurse DID get back at them the most evil way she could. She knew all their weak points. She used the threat of telling Billy's mom what he did to trigger his suicide. She did that to get back at McMurphy for his defiance of her, which included that party they had. I think that's an important point because the way I see it, she superficially seemed to 'win'. Her actions triggered McMurphy into doing something that led to him being rendered harmless. He's completely neutered. Yet, as you say, his spirit lives on. The chief escapes to the cheers of the other patients. So the nurse loses on a deeper level in the end.

Louise Fletcher earned the Oscar for her role as Nurse Ratched. She delivered part of her acceptance speech in ASL because her parents are deaf. It’s quite beautiful.
She was cast in a show called Star Trek: Deep Space Nine inn 1993 as Vedek Winn, an inflexible leader of the Bajoran religion. She was only in 14 episodes of the seven-season series. But she was beloved as a wicked villain in that show, because a lot of the story in later seasons was talking about her leadership role as Kai of the Bajoran people, when the Prophets had never even spoken to her. The worst hypocrite who might have redeemed herself in her final scene. Chef’s kiss of a featured role for Louise Fletcher.
She was loved on the ST convention circuit-such an unbelievably kind woman. She loved how hated her character was.

There's an incredibly profound moment in this movie, that only lasts a few seconds, but speaks volumes.
When they hijack the fishing boat, and MacMurphy introduces them all as doctors--- notice how they all stand straighter , composed & dignified---
The moment they were given an honorary title. Just a group of highly educated men going fishing together.
That moment underlines just how insidious labeling people can be.
When they were all labeled as "crazy", "nuts" , "deficient", etc. , they fell into the role that they were assigned by the label.

I see a lot of people have mentioned this, but I have to chime in as well. Nurse Ratched is one of the great villains of movies from that era. She wants complete control over these men, and that was threatened when McMurphy came along. When Billy finally gained a little self-esteem and confidence after sleeping with Candy (shown by his lack of a stutter), she knew exactly what to say to knock him right back--mentioning his mother (who was obviously the source of his deep problems). The threat of his mother finding out drove him to kill himself. The fact that Nurse Ratched is soft-spoken and seems professional and caring to the hospital staff only makes her more of a villain.
But aside from all that, I always enjoy your reactions and this was no exception. I hope you watch some more movies from the 70s and earlier. I'd recommend 12 Angry Men if you haven't seen it.

This is the rare case where I loved the film more than the book. The novel is narrated by the Chief, so there's not the element of surprise that you get from him in the film when he first speaks. The movie also has some original elements that I felt added a lot to the story. One of them is the World Series game. They also have the voting in the book where Nurse Ratchett asserts her authority. However, the scene in the film when McMurphy pushes back and pretends like he's watching the game on TV is original. I think it helps set the stage for his battle with Nurse Ratchett.

A top tier film, with a top tier cast. Louise Fletcher (Nurse Ratched) won the Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe for this role, among other awards. That character is often found on listings of top female villains. She did an incredible job. RIP. Yes, that was Scatman Crothers, who was also in The Shining. And what can you say about Jack Nicholson that hasn't already been said - a legend of an actor. He eats up the screen with just a look. In this film, though - he somehow lets everyone shine. All of the other "patients" at the hospital (did you catch Danny DeVito?) are memorable in their own way. This film does leave you with a whole bunch of emotions - you feel sad (for McMurphy) at the end and so exhilarated when "Chief" lifts the water fountain, breaks the window and runs out. It almost feels like he's doing it for all of them. In 1976, the film won 5 Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor (Nicholson), Best Actress (Fletcher), Best Director, Milos Forman, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It was nominated for a whole slew of other awards as well as winning a long list of additional awards. Glad you enjoyed this truly great movie.

The day we were to perform it in class, he took me aside and said that he was really going to give me a stick of gum, and that I should just go with it. Okay, sure. On stage he cupped the gum into my hand. When I opened my hand to unwrap it, I saw that he’d slipped me a rubber. I lost character and started laughing, and tossed it offstage. As it passed the teacher’s head he saw what it was and fell out of his chair laughing so hard.

Btw, good catch on realizing Nurse Ratched wasn't actually "evil"--- she was misguided & jaded about what methods would help the patients.
You can see the turnaround in her character at the very end, after surviving the attempt to strangle her--- you can see kindness in her eyes that wasnt present before.

i didn’t see her as evil either. strong word. she was highly manipulative but if we look at it through the 1960s lense, she probably genuinely thought she was helping.
i find the evil comments OTT. i also feel if it was a male doctor, nobody would call him evil. it’s literally that she’s a woman that she’s “an evil soulless b7tch” men never say that about other men.

I could be wrong, but it really seems like ya missed all the nuance between Nurse Ratched and Mack. She was an absolutely manipulative villain, who focused her job on authority, control, guilt, and shame. Mack just wanted these guys to feel some happiness. Nurse Ratched couldn't stand his methods, she felt these men had to be punished, that they had to suffer. Mack just wanted them to live.

    • @thegirlinquestion

i disagree that she believed these men should be punished. she probably thought her methods were helping.

I had a friend who hadn't seen the movie, but did read the book... After we saw it, she said that she liked the movie, but was disappointed that McMurphy and Ratchett were not quite as extreme in the movie. Well, Nicholson was close, but not quite the bearded wildman that he was in the book. Ratchett however, was more domineering, a beast of a woman. Large and overtly a bully, she gets in a real fight with him...like they are evenly matched... She was not impressed with Fletcher, even though she got an Oscar... Of course Fletcher played it differently, being more manipulative in her machinations... She clearly liked being in charge, and when dealt the opportunity to send McMurphy to prison, she declines only to keep him under her thumb, clandestinely to break him. She also did not misspeak when she brings up Billy's mother... Calling her a cunt....is an insult to cunts...

You think nurse Ratchet wasn't evil? She completely wanted to punish Mac and took a sadistic pleasure in her power over him and the rest of the patients. She threatened Billy that she would tell his mother about him losing his virginity leading to his suicide. By all accounts, Billy's mother sounds like a piece of work. She is probably why he is so meek and messed up, and nurse Ratchet uses that against him. Naw dude! She is a bad person in this movie.
